I think ninja traditionally would wear darker colors; blues, reds, greens, or greys. But they definitely did not look like the black pyjama style ninja we think of today. Which I believe comes from Japanese plays the stage hands would dress as such because they weren't characters and were meant to be ignored.
Also fun factoid! Ninja were far more honorable and loyal than Samurai.

Despite "bad stereotypes" I basically refuse to believe the Ninja would -never- wear black when necessary. And sure there's been a long standing "theatric tradition" of people wearing black outfits so that they won't be "noticed" on a stage but the Japanese didn't "invent" that and that wasn't anything specifically "linked" to the Ninja.
Well I'm sure -some- of them were honorable and loyal. But the truth was that the Samurai (typically higher classed nobles) and the Ninja (who were a mix of peasants and/or lower nobles) were simply locked in constant clashes involving land and other civil disputes. Basically Ninja tended to be an "insurgency" against whatever ruling nobles they happened to stand against at any given moment. So they weren't collectively "better" or "worse" than Samurai - they just tended to fight all the time.

There's a lot of misinformation and Romanticism added into what we think we know about Samurai and Ninja (also Knights). Without a historian it's difficult for us common folk to seperate what's myth, what's romanticized, and what was real. But at any rate they mythological, romanticized versions make for more entertaining characters.

A ninja that looks like a ninja is a failure of a ninja. Sometimes they wear intergalactic orange so we can find the corpse.
But anyway, new comments go in the new thread.

Assuming cloaks/capes can have a different color inside and out, that black might look cool as an inside lining. I'll be willing to give it a chance.
