OK, this is ripped right out of The Last avatar...BUT, its a cool costume
1) not a bit of spandex and it still looks heroic
2) High collar
3) half plate armor with a baggy sleeves and pants
4) great colors

This is the kind of costume pretty much any hero would be proud to wear. Devs please consider this.

I love the old retro golden age costumes. and I love the nazi UFO technology that was so prevalent in comics.
mad Nazi science. Verboten schtuff.

We could use some time traveling Golden Age missions too!

It might be cool as part of a time travel mission to somehow have characters be "required" to wear "retro" versions of their usual costumes. There have been a number of modern comic book characters who've been given the "retro" treatment such as Wonder Woman:

I know some people might not want to be forced to come up with a retro costume for any number of legitimate reasons but I think there might be a way to "encourage" people to play along. If I'm not mistaken all of the costume items in CoT are going to be categorized by general types (i.e. historical, sci-fi, causal, etc.). Based on that it should be easy enough for the game to be able to check a character's costume to make sure a majority of the items they're wearing are labelled "retro". Then all the mission needs to do is reward a bonus at the end of the mission for "staying in character" with an appropriate retro-based outfit. This would positively reinforce a player's participation in something like this. As implied the mission could be completed without a retro costume - the player simply wouldn't get the bonus related to it.

Of course the idea of "rewarding" players for wearing certain types of costumes at certain times could then become a game mechanic in all kinds of other situations.

That's a pretty neat concept.

That's a pretty neat concept.

But I would suggest that rather than forcing someone into a selection of costumes, the mission just offers a free costume slot for the duration of the mission, and leave it up to the player to use their own judgement.

This would be especially appropriate for character designs for witch there are no retro options.

Another plus side for MWM is if people want to keep that costume, they have an option to purchase another slot for it. Either that or make missions like this a means of opening up additional costume slots
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

Sure relating this type of mission to either getting a "temporary" costume slot or as a means to unlock a new permanent costume slot makes sense.

Dishwasher1910 strikes again. His designs are really top notch. Not sure what's going on with the heels in this one but that top is hot. or Cool...I think you understand. The hair is nice too. Kinda wish I had a reverse perspective cause the sword and hilt look like they could be pretty slick.

This is very nice! Love the hair! It would be awesome if they could manage these sort of “flowing with the breeze” hair animations for the game.

Yeah the pants are probably the weakest part of this pic. Not that I actually hate them (because the "bell-bottom" look can be good in the right situations) but I'm just not sure they go with the rest of this outfit as is.

I like the boots too. Not quite sure if they're meant to be rocket/armored boots for her "real" feet of if she's got completely artificial feet/legs. Either way they are interesting.

Yes I hope they can manage some variation of the "one long ponytail" type hair like in the pics Redlynne provided. The personal version of this that I want is the long braided top-knotted ponytail:

Hopefully this would be doable since it's basically (animation-wise) just a "traditional tail" attached at a different point.

I believe the devs have

I believe the devs have stated they want to add a "wind" effect to outdoor maps so that any flowy bits of your character design (such as capes, hair, and so on) can move heroically in the wind.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

Didn't someone recently suggest (either on this thread or somewhere else) that we should have toggle-able command that would produce a "wind for dramatic effect" sort of like an "environmental emote"? Basically your post here seems familiar somehow.

But yeah if the Devs want to make that "a thing" that's naturally happening in any outdoor area that'd be fine. If they managed that then it would likely be something they could control on an per area basis. For example it might make sense for it to be a bit more windy than average near the shore line or maybe they could have zone events like hurricanes that would be super-windy.

Thanks for reminding everyone about the Lost in Space reboot on Netflix. I saw a trailer for it about a month ago and decided it looked good enough to give it a try then I basically forgot about it. I guess it kicked off 10 episodes like a week ago so I don't want any spoilers other than if anyone thinks its was worthwhile or not. ;)

Anyway the 1998 movie was one of those love-hate things. Overall it was basically groan-tastic but there were a few bits and pieces that were kind of cool. Gary Oldman did pretty well as Dr. Smith but most of the rest of the cast/plot were semi-lame. Lacey Chambert did manage to pull off a likeable version of a re-imagined Penny Robinson but she didn't really have enough screentime to even have a chance to save the movie by herself. As far as CoT costuming goes I'd pretty much agree any of her hair styles/clothes from the movie would be good for CoT.

Yeah we've kind of covered the "Tron" idea for at least skin-tight spandexy kinds of bodysuits but I'm not sure if we really covered it for any other kinds of clothing. So yeah applying it to jackets, gloves, pants, etc. should obviously be considered as well.

This is a DA piece called Ride The Lightning. That's a great super group name! Every member has electric special effects and at least a tertiary ranged lightning attack.
Anyhow - back to costumes.
No two pieces here are the same...all the costumes are kinda sorta anime-like, none involve spandex.
in a world of spandex the non spandex costumes really stand out...and this is where the MWM artists really stand out. above I have a piece from the last airbender...
this just sorta fits right in

Yeah it's amazing how long it can take to do hair that looks like you didn't "do" anything to it:

Not that I actually expect anyone to watch this vid end to end; just linking it here to point out you don't usually "just wake up" with hair like this.

There are no super long hair options in any super hero mmo I know of. Not sure how long or wild hair can get in CoT.

Just as a pure semi-educated/semi-arbitrary guess I doubt you'd ever see hair longer than a character is tall in CoT. It just seems like the overall animation challenges of anything longer would be, to use a technical phrase, a "complete-pain-in-the-ass" to implement:

I think it could still be done as part of some travel movement effect.

Going back to the Starfire example:

So when not flying, the hair is it normal length. But when exercising a travel power, it will stream behind in a hair textured wake; like a contrail, perhaps. And when you stop traveling, it "catches up to" the character and returns to its normal length.

Good point Huck, but in regards to lothic's comments, Starfire's hair is not bigger or longer than she is in DCUO.

I'm sure something like this has been suggested before. and maybe we've seen something like it in one of the videos. Still I find it to be a notable example of a retro cyberpunk look. But as a further "inspiration" I post it here.

We need mecha style pieces.

We need mecha style pieces. Gundam. Robotech/Macross. All good examples of styles of armor needed at the start! O.O

Sure I'm on board with all sorts of wearable Mecha bits and pieces for costume items.

But this post reminded me of something that I think would be super cool: Being able to have a "big robot suit" that would directly act as another costume that a smaller character could get into. Just to be clear I'm not technically talking about having a "vehicle" our characters could drive. I'm just talking about a huge robot suit that would have special Costume Change Emotes that would show our characters "getting into" the robot and then ending up being just the robot by itself just like Iron Man.

For example here's a pic of young girl who's the obvious pilot of a big mecha-type robot suit.

Instead of the girl "driving" the suit you'd simply have one costume slot (#1) with just the girl wearing that red/orange/pink suit thing she's wearing and another slot (#2) with just the big huge mecha-type robot. Then you'd have a special Costume Change Emote that'd show the girl getting into the robot-suit. At the end of the Costume Change the net effect basically just has you switching from Costume #1 to Costume #2.

I had a character in CoH that tried to accomplish this idea after the Science Booster allowed a single character to use any of the body models (Male, Female or Huge). I had one petite-sized female character change one of her available costume slots to be a Huge sized robot. The theory was that she was small enough that she could fit inside the robot. The thing that killed the illusion was that any time you were wearing a Huge sized body model in CoH the game automatically assumed you were a "male" character so all the NPCs referred to my female character as a "he". It was humorously annoying to say the least. ;)

I have a concept that would use something like Lothic said. Though in my concept the girl pilot would be masquerading as a male robot. So the CoX limitations wouldn't bother me.

That said a costume change emote where you climb inside another costume of yours would likely be difficult to pull off. Possibly better to have a crate (like robot mastermind robot summoning) that drops down, you step in, then step out as new costume. Possibly with mechanical sound effects. This could also work for any iron man style heroes.

To be fair I never claimed such a Costume Change Emote would be easy to implement. It'd likely have to be fairly abstract (like your crate idea) to account for all the differences there could be between Costume #1 and Costume #2. Still anything that would even vaguely support this idea would be cool. :)

Well to be fair, after the island was invaded, they may have come to realize, they have no armor that can actually protect against modern firearms (modern firearms able to penetrate breast plate easily). So more movement may have been their answer to firearms.
Not to mention, in Diana's training they weren't really wearing metal armor. Even on the beach scene versus the Germans, there were many who just wore leather armor. Which includes Diana's aunt (forgot her name).

That's... actually a good point.... guess I'm back to waiting for reviews rather than just ignoring the movie completely... also I really do want that chainmail thong.... and I ain't talking about normal sized undies that have a chainmail texture on them, I am talking full on "Oh god Uncle Steve went crazy at the medieval fair and why doesn't he have pants?" levels of thongage, I want my mostly naked barbarian man to run at a group of thugs in this and have them go "Nope!! You guys don't really have to convince any of us... you'd have to convince the Devs. ;)

P.S. While there are plenty of examples of people who've created chainmail bikinis (in art or even IRL) there's an obvious reason why most people would likely opt for chainmail loincloths instead:

If you think about it pretty much no one (man or woman) would actually want chainmail rubbing around "down there" unless they were a very special kind of masochist.

In CO, I had a a character who was a mutant, who's mutant ability was turning into a mecha with the ability to also grow in height. Rage with growth advantage and the grow temp power made her huge! Multiple costumes of course, one with her in what would look like a mech pilot suit and another as the mech itself.

Could also have done just her getting into the suit, as I believe there was enough of a height difference one could do.

Sure I've seen a bunch of examples of this kind of thing ranging from "spinal armor" to built-up cyber-powered parts. It could even be a part of a powered exoskeleton rig that would presumably be giving its wearer superpowered-like abilities:

Yeah ironically I almost posted that pic myself - that's why I threw in the phrase "spinal armor" just to expand the original idea. ;)

But I think the specific idea being suggested by Cyclops was more for like a cybernetic/bionic attachment along the lines of what Matt Damon wore in Elysium or showcased in like probably dozens of other sci-fi/anime shows.

I posted this on the hair

I posted this on the hair thread, and something struck me. The eyelash...it's like one solid piece.
It actually looks good. Especially since we won't really get real close-up shots of our faces, lashes like this will look great from afar.
If anyone does comment on your toon's eyes, you can claim to be a mutant.

I would like the Mono-Lash to be a costume feature. Thank you

That looks like a "cut crease" and there's about a bazillion ways to work those between various eye shadows and eyelashes.

As I just implied the Devs could easily create a whole bunch of styles but even I wouldn't want them to worry about having too many for launch. They could easily add many variants after launch to sell their in-game store.

Yeah I used examples from Sorayama not too long ago during a related discussion on this forum about whether the Devs are going to force our characters to wear "modesty underwear" in ALL cases where a hint of nudity might be possible (or at least debatable).

I think what the Devs involved (Tannim in particular) settled on was the idea was that as long as you tried to be "completely nude" with a standard human skin texture then sure, forcing our characters to wear "digital fig leaves" (i.e. default tops and bottoms) would be appropriate such as the following:

But we all know comic books for decades have been able to get away with "nude-adjacent" artwork if it was plausible enough that the character in question wasn't simply a normal human "nude" but was actually covered in fur, made of metal, wearing skin-tight spandex or so on.

For example according to Tannim something like this should be acceptable in CoT:

because it's clear this is a Barbie doll-esque robot, not a "nude" human.

Presumably something like this would also be acceptable:

because apparently it's clear enough this is "skin tight fur", again not a "nude" human.

So the key seems to be whether you're talking about a "nude with normal human textured skin" versus a "nude with non-human textured skin". Hopefully getting stuck with "default fig leaf underwear" will be limited to just a few obvious human skin texture types.

As I said in another thread (think it was the same one you refer to Lothic) it's not about nudity itself but rather about visible naughty bits, that is exposed nipples (only female ones?) and genitalia. As long as they are hidden by something (or technically non-existent) even when that something still makes you technically nude it seem to be perfectly fine.

Yeah I purposefully didn't mention the question of anatomically correct "naughty bits" today because it's been made painfully clear several times that CoT has collectively chosen not to address those things under any circumstances. Let's not give a certain body model Dev another heart attack by even mentioning that shortcoming of his body models yet again.

Honestly, I don't expect the body models to be that anatomically correct. :P

Actually we already KNOW the player character body models of CoT are going to be Barbie and Ken Dolls (with the assumed hypocritical exception that the male model will probably be allowed to have visible nips when bare chested because he'd look "funny" without them).

That's why I didn't even mention the issue today because I knew it actually had no bearing on what I talked about a few posts ago. It's a moot point and for the record I'm simply responding to you about it now. Ironically I have no desire to rehash this topic again lest I be accused of demonstrating my "chronic terrible behavior" once again.

Just rewatched the trailers

Just re-watched the trailers for the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars movie and realized we need this cape/cloak worn by Qi'ra for CoT:

Actually all of her outfits/hairstyles/jewelry from these trailers look interesting.

Here are a few more random pics to consider. I'd pretty much want everything seen in these pics for CoT:

So they just released another

So they just released another Deadpool 2 vid on YouTube today. So why would I be mentioning that here on the costume thread? Well it's been mentioned a number of times how the Devs of CoT have told us they're going to be allowing as many costume items as possible to be shared between the male and female body models. This vid highlights an example of that (at about the 1:50 mark) in a very funny way... Enjoy:

So we were catching up with

So we were catching up with watching season 2 of Westworld last night (had them TiVo'd) and we saw that Armistice made an appearance again. In case you didn't know Armistice (that's her name) is one of the robot "hosts" on the show whose role is that of a fairly brutal bandit-type character. Anyway the reason I'm bringing her up here is that she has a fairly impressive full-body snake tattoo that wraps all around her and even goes up to her face:

I think the Devs have already told us they are going to try to have a "decal" system in CoT that'll let us place things like tattoos or scars on our character's bodies. My question at this point is how extensive that system is going to be and whether it would allow for something as elaborate as what Armistice has going on.

I would also like to know.

I would also like to know.

I'm a fan of tattoos, have several myself, and like to give my characters tattoos whenever possible (which is actually fairly uncommon/difficult in a surprisingly large number of games to this day).

Most games only ever have a handful of small, typically not very good, face tattoos for you to chose a small number of (often that number is ONE). And games that allow body tattoos often have only a small collection to chose from (and again those are often terrible). DCUO has, as far as I can recall, exactly ONE body tattoo option (that looks like crap). CoH only really had 2 or 3 to chose from (iirc Yakuza style and the snake/skull arm sleeves), and that locked you into a specific skin instead of being a layer applied to the skin you wanted to use. GW2 only has tattoo options for Norn, and so on.

I'd really like a system that had a lot more flexibility than that.

I would think that wraparound

I would think that wraparound tattoos like this might be a problem, especially if they wrap around more than one body part. Having said that, however, I'm sure there are ways around this problem if we think on it. For example, break a tattoo into more than one piece. This way, you leave it up to the player to arrange it and scale it so that the pieces fit together and can still wrap around body parts.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

I really like the complexity of this uniform.
I post for one main reason. the hood with a crown over it. The hood is tucked in at the collar, and the crown is just magnificent.
1) the crown should have a number of ornaments/designs to choose from. The basic band is a good base that the player can customize from there.
---In other words, no two crowns will look alike.

the outfit is just too awesome,,,that this is a cosplay simply blows me away.

This is a great costume but also pretty basic...spandex and a cape. we'll have this type at launch.
Why I post is the mask blends right in with the cape...its all one piece. I like that! and the simple design on the side of the head makes it stand out from the rest.

nice and simple. yet still spectacular.

OK, this is another aura

OK, this is another aura combo that I really like. Look beyond the lightning to see a subtle intricate aura that makes this character stand out. There is also a glow about the gauntlets that really work. this is a combo of auras...I like it.

the hairpins in the hair...don't like that, but all things considered this is pretty cool.
Personally i would play with the techno theme here and add cables from the shoulder pieces to the gauntlets. cables from the shoulders to a techno girdle and to the boots...but then i like cables

I had to comment on this one simply because I had a Electric Blaster in CoH that was relatively similar to this. She had no "built-in" superpowers so relied on rocket boots to fly and power gauntlets to "explain" her other powers.

I do like the aura/power combos here. As far as your idea about "adding cables" goes I'm sure that would be fine for some characters. I know with my character she actually wanted her tech to be as clean and unnoticeable as possible because she was almost sort of self-conscious that she had no "actual" powers and felt people might not take her seriously if her tech look "kludgey" or too much like a high school science project.

I apologize for lack of images, but given my main character tends to be a samurai, something I'd really really really love is if we could get Japanese robes, hakama, and variants of the tops with haori coats worn over theme ala the bleach gotei 13 captains or the historical Shinsengumi.

For true icing on the cake: samurai armor that you can have a haori over the top as well.

There is a song I hear, a melody from the past.
When I woke for the first time, when I slept for the last.
You are the one, the hero who will stand.
Do not blame father, he is only a man.

No worries about pics. I just googled the following based on your keywords:

I'm secretly hoping for a keytar. It strikes me as a perfect instrument that is inherently over the top and associated with musical styles that are also over the top. I missed the first kickstarter all those years ago, but if a second round of funding comes up closer to release with an option to fund prop creation, that is definitely where my nickels and dimes are going.

There's long been talk of a "Second Chance" fundraising event that's supposed to happen before anything gets released for beta testing. The Devs have essentially hinted/implied that such a thing is pretty much going to have to happen sometime this summer/fall assuming everything else is more or less on schedule.

Could you buy the fact that I was joking for that dollar or two? ;)

Yes, I was joking about this - obviously the thing simply looks like bicycle wheel. You'll notice it's just a flat strip of metal (not an actual rim) with no place for the rubber of a tire to "attach" to.

But TV shows made in the 1960s did in fact get produced with extremely cheap sets/props that were often re-purposed junk just like bicycle rims and/or chicken wire. Often multiple sci-fi shows of the time shared all sorts of junk between them. Lost in Space was practically famous for reusing spaceships, "foam rocks", various robots and all sorts of other things with other shows and movies.
