It would be more relevant to the genre to allow someone to play as a talking car before a spider.

I think we've exhausted that

I think we've exhausted that particular line of conversation, guys. This isn't the place for it anyways. Are you sure you wouldn't rather comment about space suits or demons and the sort of costume pieces they could include for the final game?

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

Well considering those

Well considering those against it, I'm pretty sure have been totally pro "Allow people to play a D&D style character in the modern day setting" I'd say giant spider wouldn't be far behind. :p

I'd just like to chime in

I'd just like to chime in after seeing it mentioned and say giant ants are a great idea for an npc faction. Tons of variety available from real world examples, clear motivations (protect the hive, find food, etc).

I would love to see them used as more than a faceless threat to the city as well. Perhaps make the queen (or even the ants themselves) sentient, and have morality choices giving more options than just "murder all the ants". There are a bunch of real world places inspiration could be drawn from, like the mind control cordyceps parasitic fungus making ants do things that would bring them into conflict with players (so the real villain is the parasite). There are also varieties of ants that focus on agriculture, growing plant crops or maintaining other insects as cattle to milk. If those are threatened they may start foraging for food but players could help resolve that issue for a peaceful good guy resolution.

Back to the main topic of the thread. Non human body parts (especially from the waist down) sound awesome. They probably won't be available at launch due to the extra work as mentioned, but there are tons of interesting options there.

I'm not sure how likely it is we'll see player models deviate from being bipedal though, that seems like a lot of work that only a few people would use and if it wasn't put in few people would notice.

There are certainly some great possibilities there though, and not just centaur/animal options. What about wheels, tank treads, rockets? You could do all sorts of things there.

I guess you could shortcut the animation requirements by having the lower body with relatively little animation if it was a mechanical option. Tank treads or a wheelchair are mostly solid with only some moving parts that move in constant predictable ways. Animal bodies would be cool but probably more difficult.

Still, there are games that have them. SMITE's version of arachne is essentially a drider.

Also add in lamia as an option (snake tail from the waist down - the Greeks called them gorgons). After all, since so many mythological figures were actually Titans, it stands to reason that Medusa (and the other gorgons) were Titans too :D

Which also justifies centaurs, if not other ‘taur types.

I mentioned being a car a little earlier in the thread.

On a similar note Vehicle parts as costume pieces. Car doors, tires, helicopter blades, etc. That way you can complete the look of being a transformable vehicle robot.

Dinotaur

Upper half of a T-Rex stuck into the most of a Stegosaurus or Ankylosaurus.

Edit: I fully allow MWM to use this idea for an enemy/giant monster.

Edit 2: Maybe a Brontosaurus body, I'm unsure of how big stegosaurus and Ankylosaurus are in comparison to a T-rex it might end up super top heavy

we need to be able to mix and match a number of collars/capes. that means collars come separately. I can dig it.

Look at the hem of the dress. I don't know what to call it but it looks great and makes the character stand out. I love it!
The stiff collar is concealing like a mask. I'm not into that but it is a comic trope and its used a lot for OC's at Deviant Art. People like this too!

There could be the star-filter we see in your example and here:

All the different kinds of Lens flare à la JJ Abrams:

*shrug* Outside of the texture of the costumes themselves, they're rather plain outfits. It's the boots design that I liked. The outfits are likely in the game, as they're basic outfits. As for the artist choice in making them seem pretty cold, eh, artist will do what an artist will do, I just saw the batgirl in someone's fave and loved the boots and knew I had to post them here :)

As for the boob window, it wasn't about the basic tight aspect (though I knew someone would point out the boob window), I was thinking more along the actual armor aspects and the design of it.

Though, after watching Hero Academia and seeing as how there are plenty of odd concepts out there, a boob window just might be needed for a characters powers to work! :o

Unrealistic armor is an old comic trope. With comics, it is more what looks cool than what is realistic. When people sling lightning bolts, why worry about realism?

I can believe that a person can shoot lightning bolts. I can't believe anyone would look at armor with a giant hole in the place where they need protection most and go "Yeah, this will protect me!"

And as for the suggestion that they need the hole in the armor, Brand, that's just a lame excuse. Like how Quiet in MGS: The phantom pain "needed" to be scantily clad because she breathed through her skin even though there was a fully clothed person with the same trait in a previous game, and you could get a costume of hers that's fully clothed. You don't need a lame justification for it, just say "I wanted to have x"

I don't need an excuse. :p I've made one character with a boob window alternate outfit (may have been a civvie outfit though...think it was...but her hero outfit showed the belly so mute point there) on the "Just because she would" *shrug* I wasn't giving an excuse but rather, a concept that may make a reason for it.

I could do that easily.

"I fire the blast from my chest, and anything I'm personally wearing will stop me from being able to fire it, but if it's exposed, I can fire all i want!" So, the bad guys of course want to put a shirt on it! :p

In your example that is an excuse. You want to have someone with a boob window so you make a concept that attempts to justify the outfit choice. It's no different than the character Quiet from MGS 5. They wanted a scantily clad female character so they made up a reason why they "need" to be that way.

If you want characters to have a boob window, fine. Keep doing as you apparently did and have them have it because you/they want to have it.

Like, just own it, you know?

Brand X isn't wrong here; I've got several concepts that, by that logic are just "excuses" to play a character, and basically any origin story that results in a character you like can be treated as an excuse. Batman and Superman, both beloved characters of our genre, are incredibly excuse plot; Clark Kent is an alien from another world that just happened to end up with the perfect family and just happens to look completely human and has godlike powers from making his home on Earth. Batman's excuse for being a crime fighter is that his parents are dead, leaving him to conveniently inherit a multi-billion dollar corporation which allows him to fund his crime-fighting escapades in the first place.

No narrative can exist without contrivance and excuses, and that's represented much more strongly in superhero fiction than in any other genre. Execution is what matters.

Anyways, on the topic that this thread is actually about, I've been ruminating on the demon stuff I mentioned a little bit ago and found more examples of workable face and body features. Featuring Dante (and Vergil), from the Devil May Cry series!

The big thing here, to me, is that the facial features of all of these are clearly some level of inhuman, particularly with those metallic head crests. Vergil isn't even particularly evil looking, just inhuman. Though, i will say, I adore the dusters made out of scales, and hope deeply that that's an option to be had in the final game.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

Except that you can change all those things you mentioned and still get the same character.

You could have at least tried something comparable. Like "Batman dresses like a bat to scare criminals" or "Superman wears tights because they did on krypton" both of those things, Batman's bat motif, and Superman's tights have been given weak justifications in the past. But the real reasons for them are simple; Batman looks cool like that, and Superman is reminiscent of old circus strongmen.

You can change any aspect of any concept. This doesn’t make her wrong and it isn’t a defense to say it is part of her concept. Just say you don’t like her concept and be done. Just because you don’t like or approve of someone else’s ideas doesn’t really give you license to rip them apart over it. I am quite certain you can be just as offending in your opinion/concepts. Let it go.

Who says I neither like or approve of the concept? I never stated any form of opinion on the concept itself just that it was a weak justification for "I want a character with a boob window." Which it is. It was specifically constructed to give "purpose" to the boob window. Just like, don't bother. Own that stuff.

The point is people don't need to make up justifications for things like that. Just be honest and say "I just wanted it to be like that."

I guess you’re statements: I

I guess you’re statements: I can believe that a person can shoot lightning bolts. I can't believe anyone would look at armor with a giant hole in the place where they need protection most and go "Yeah, this will protect me!"
And subsequent refuting of anyone else’s defense of the “boob window” suggested to me you didn’t like or approve of it.

It doesn’t matter if it is weak justification. The fact that it is being defended suggests in a broader sense that they did exactly what you are asking for, “owning it”. I guess the rub for me is if they want to “justify” having a feature then fine, to me this is “owning it”. Not only are they incorporating it aesthetically but even suggesting they have a reason beyond the obvious. People are allowed to make up whatever they like conceptually. Whether anyone else sees it the same is a moot point. The reason for including any feature/aesthetic is entirely in the players purview. It doesn’t matter if they don’t call how you see it, let it go.

So you are saying that anything that results in a boob window is because they first thought "I want a boob window" and then set out to find a justification for it?

This is what irks me, backgrounds and concepts that are perfectly fine for men and wouldn't be questioned will be relegated and possibly "dismissed" to that they only chose it because "they wanted a boob window" if they use it for a woman.

It doesn’t matter if it is weak justification. The fact that it is being defended suggests in a broader sense that they did exactly what you are asking for, “owning it”. I guess the rub for me is if they want to “justify” having a feature then fine, to me this is “owning it”. No, they're not owning it. By making up excuses for using it they're specifically -not- owning it. They like it. That is the underlying reason. They want a character that shows their tits.

AND THAT IS FINE.

They don't need to dress it up with any kind of BS. They don't need to justify it. They don't need to make excuses.

And it's perfectly fine to admit something like "Oh, yeah, armor with a giant hole in it where they need protection the most is hella useless but I like how it looks."

What's not fine is to try and make an excuse for it to be that way. Just own it. Just own that you like how it looks. It's ok to like something that is impractical/bad/whatever. Just don't bring in a load of BS.

I'm more concerned with taking it out of this thread. I don't care if people argue in PMs, but public venues while also being off topic are possibly the worst place to handle a disagreement on the internet.

Not picking a fight. Haven't

Not picking a fight. Haven't been, either.

My statements are either not being read by people or misunderstood. Which would take a lot of effort when I take the time to practically spell out my point.

I have a limited supply of patience and when people continually make assumptions about me, my argument, or anything else that tends to wear me a little thin. Mix in the seemingly purposeful misunderstanding of the point I try and make and I can get a little sarcastic.

Now that being said the best way to stop an argument is to not continue it. You want the thread back on topic, put the thread on topic. Post something related to the topic. Popping in to give your two cents just makes the argument continue further.

Ok, i know this is kinda off topic. I would like to know (IF) COT is released before Halloween, will you have a Trick or Treat like we did in COX? Door to door and such. Actually it would be a perfect release date considering we will all be wearing costumes lol. Just a question i know there is still a lot to do before then including Beta but wanted to throw it out there.

Straw 'Coolie' hats
Jingasas (basically a metal coolie hat, as opposed to a kabuto which is the 'classic' samurai armour helmet, often with a crest on top)

In a perfect world, the straw hats from 'Shogun Assasin'. Nothing says ninja badass more than a straw hat that comes down to your shoulders with a wicker viewing panel in the front.

For anyone who went to see

For anyone who went to see Incredibles 2 this weekend (spoiler alert!) ... there's a costume piece that I very much want to see included in City of Titans. I'm amazed that apparently no images of them have leaked onto the internet yet, but it's Pixar and Incredibles 2 is definitely a movie that every Titan should be seeing in the theater!

So I can't (yet) post a reference pic of what was used in Incredibles 2, but the costume piece is basically rubber shrouded round lens safety glasses that block all light except what's coming through the lenses to enter the eyes and which have a rather strong "domino mask" kind of appearance to them when worn. But then the lenses of the glasses are "lit" in a way that completely obscures the eyes of the wearer and which gives the lenses a distinct "glow" to them.

With the color and texture options available in the Chargen, it ought to be possible to give such an item a huge variety of appearances, complete with different color tints for the lenses, different lens shapes, glow lighting levels, star filter lens flare FX, and so on. Basically, start with something like this ...

... and just add different lens shapes, colors and lighting/glow/lens flare options, object textures, etc.

Boob window armor is worse than boob plate. Like having a giant target saying shoot/stab here.

As much as it pains me to have to say this, there are some circumstances for which bared skin is a necessity for supers to use their powers, rather than just yet another excuse for additional sex appeal. One example of this phenomenon is Ms. Venus who later became Super MILF.

Of course, there are counter examples where the chest window is a ridiculous idea as you can see explained here (1, 2).

But beyond that, we can take the word of "actual heroes" on this subject ...

And then there's Yaoyorozo's Creation Quirk, which manifests objects from her bare skin ... so she needs to have a costume with bare skin showing just in order to be able to use her power conveniently (without needing to disrobe entirely first).

So there are potential reasons for having things like a chest window, which CAN make sense. Unfortunately, they're usually just used for cheesecake appeal, because ... audience.

But that character was

But that character was -created- so that they had to show bare skin.

That's kind of the thing with fictional characters they're not like an actual person who has to do that to overcome some obstacle. Like with Quiet from MGS 5 they just want a sexy female character who wears very little then they invent a reason why this needs to be so.

There's a reason why you don't see nearly as many male characters that "need" to be nude/nearly nude for reasons.

Yes, there are ways you can implement nudity (partial or full) into a concept but the basis of the concept usually is "I want to create a character that's scantily clad, how can I get away with it or make it so people don't think I'm just being pervy?"

Secondly yeah, no one needs reasons beyond "I wanted it that way" which is my exact point. They don't need to invent reasons why their character is scantily clad, it's fine to just say "I wanted it that way" instead of being like, "Well you see she actually -needs- to dress like that because of these reasons I made up to justify this characters existance."

You may see any such concepts as "bullshit reasons" for a player to make a sexy/scantily clad heroin but then that begs the question "why write a bio at all" as in coming up with a background for ones powers in such cases if the only thing acceptable is "because I wanted to". You have to separate the rationalization for it in this world (by the player) and the rationalization from inside the game world (by the toon them self).

Mostly because is a poor excuse people hide behind to try and deflect criticism.

It's kind of like if someone made a character that was possessed by a rage demon that sometimes took over and that made the character be really vulgar at times. That's just a poor excuse for the player to be a dick.

Lie there's this phrase in D&D that's become rather hated; "It's what my character would do." And it's usually used to justify their own crappy behavior after they killed/betrayed/stole from the party or did something else detrimental to other players.

I guess it's all a matter of intent and the why the person is doing what they are doing. Usually people will make a scantily clad, over sexualized character then if they recieve criticism about said character will use the "reason" as a way to attempt to deflect said criticism.

Where as just coming up with a backstory for any other kind of characters doesn't usually have people do that, other than like God moding "Well, my character -is- a god"

Where as just coming up with a backstory for any other kind of characters doesn't usually have people do that, other than like God moding "Well, my character -is- a god"

The simple fact is that EVERYTHING we put into the backstory/costume/whatever is because we want to do it, so why the fuck should we have to explicitly say just that when it comes to stuff that some people find a bit offensive or doesn't agree with? Why do I have to justify my character outside of the game when the only thing that should matter is the in-game justifications?

However by claiming that some backgrounds and/or concepts are "bullshit reasons" used only to justify "offensive costumes" implies that those backgrounds and concepts are somehow wrong or invalid, and thus should never be used when looked at from an in-game perspective. Which brings back a question I asked before, why are some backgrounds/concepts perfectly fine for men while not for women?

Just because someone doesn't agree with another person's choices in how they make and play their character does not mean they can impose their will on that other character. We can't expect that everyone will make and play a character that the majority consider "free" from criticism but I fully admit that a few take that way too far, so that is why we get other tools to deal with like an ignore list and ability to report to mods. You aren't forced to continue to play with such characters or even players.

Actual behaviour things are kinda context driven (for vulgar language it's primarily which chat channel they use) so it's not so clear on if they are actually an asshole or just playing one on that specific character.

Or use it as an excuse to self-righteously inflict criticism.

Just cut to the chase already and insist that you're right and everyone else is wrong and that everyone else needs to just suck it up and admit the truth that you're demanding they admit to. It'll save us all a lot more wasted keystrokes.

Nailed it!

its just a fact of comic life.

I don't care if people make sexy characters what I care about is them coming up with bullshit reasons as to why their characters "need" to be that way instead of just being honest about it.

You don't have to justify your character outside the game. Saying "I wanted it that way" is explicitly -not- attempting to justify it. By all means weave what ever reasons you want into your backstory but don't try to use them as a shield from criticism.

With the men/women thing (though I'm not sure when you asked that) it's more or less the same reason as to why some jokes are ok for black people and not for white people. One has a history of oppression and the other doesn't.

No one's attempting to "impose their will" on another player. Infact I don't know how someone even could do that. Like you said they could just be ignored or at worse reported.

Yeah, interactions can be hard to judge a lot of the time. Sometimes you can tell vial IC/OOC interactions. Usually if a player is not a jerk when asked to tone down their character's jerkiness they will, but sometimes they make justifications for why their character needs to be a jerk and that the other person is just stomping all over their character. It's the same as any interaction IRL if someone's saying something that you find offensive and you ask them to stop and they try to hide behind like, free speech or like they have a friend who doesn't find it offensive or whatever, then you can tell that they just don't really care how they make you feel.

I dunno. I'm probably not explaining myself right. I'm not meaning to come off as self righteous or whatever. I tend not to think before I type, but think as I'm typing if that makes sense? So usually my posts meander around and get a bit muddled.

I like that very last bit you said. Almost sounds like you're doing the same thing you're so averse to ;P Not that you are it just struck me as funny
