Discuss: Sneak Peek: Auras

This is a little something to whet your whistles while we work on some bigger and more comprehensive updates. Well, that is a bit of a misstatement. The development team is working on making the game. We're just trying to capture what they've done without distracting them too badly. You may have seen JWBullfrog posting in the forums lately. He and I are relatively new to the MWM team, but our job is to take some of the burden off Shadow Elusive and the other developers and add a bit more active public reach to the effort in the run up to delivering the game we've all been pining for.

But back to auras. Please comment below about this little tease. Trust me when I say that this team really wants to make the best game they can. So clever and imaginitive ideas as well as constructive criticism are both welcome.

Whoa, cool! Once again, it

Whoa, cool! Once again, it has that familiar feeling of the old game while being brought forward into modern times.

I especially like that fire aura! Though the rotating spheres ain't bad either. Actually they're all pretty sweet.

Question: Are these titles ('villain, vigilante, scoundrel or mercenary') just fun with the thesaurus or are they official game terms? The last one, mercenary, is new to me.

P.S. Oooh, combat auras!

A lot of new people will be seeing these things and we want to drive home that you can play whomever you like, however you like. I imagine there will be plenty of players with mercenary characters, and why not?

Ok, cool. And thanks for the reply. I asked because while the tri-axis alignment concept is pretty clear, the whole Hero-Villain spectrum still seems to be wreathed in shadow, despite some folks on the forum making claims here and there about this even though MWM has never actually said for sure.

So I like all your aura examples, especially the last one with the spheres because it also shows off hovering in place as well. ;)

The only "constructive criticism" I'd offer about the spheres is that instead of having them "orbit" in a flat circle like you've got them I think it would be more "realistic" if they orbited in a slightly erratic manner perhaps more like electrons spinning around in an atom.

The following classic X-Men vid shows what I'm talking about. I'd like to see "orbiting spheres/orbs" in CoT move like these (starting at about the 0:38 mark):

P.S. Obviously I'd love to have a combat power that worked like Magneto's spheres (and the hover disk thingy) as well but I'll take what I can get. ;)

Thinking back about the Tsoo

Thinking back about the Tsoo or just martial art characters in general, maybe swirling energy dragons. I know the Tsoo didn't have that aura but they just made me think it would be a nice addition.
Crawling spiders
Dripping aura(I'm thinking color it so if you have a zombie skin, it looks like pus)
Burn/energy marks (I'm thinking a character that is barely containing their energy/fire so it 'pokes' through their skin but maybe that is just a type of costume)
Swirling trash
Many types of targeting drones(think from old Devices powerset)
Bubbles (I would like to use flight but in a giant bubble)
Ghost or force field fists or full body. (I recently saw an aura where an archer fired an arrow but it was a larger samurai like ghost that was superimposed over the character)
Animal auras (probably a combat aura so when you start fighting, an energy or ghost like image of a wolf, falcon, bear, etc appear just above and around your head and shoulders)
Halos
Swirling ribbons (the Mu made me think of that)
Distortion field where your character kind of looks like an old untuned TV or just blurred. Oooh, a blurred face would be cool.
A cloud that is constantly raining for your depressed characters
Rays of sunshine following your overly happy character.
Kirby crackle like aura but smiley faces
Tendrils
Magic words/symbols

Reward tactics as well as damage dealing.

I'd also love a ghost aura for my character. Can we mix and combine aura's? Or use a full body like I'm guessing the aura's in the example are, and also use body part specific auras?

Will-o-the-wisps, gem stones, an atomic symbol would also be pretty nice.

For being a mini update this

For being a mini update this was a juicy one!

So first off, I love the aura on the far left - the kind of bubbly one with mixture of black and white/pink. Is that what folks here have called “Kirby Krackle”? It is almost exactly what I’m looking for for my character.

My question is: is the movement of the aura the only option? Like if I select this, am I kind of stuck with it floating up? Or will there be options including things like having the cloud of “bubbly energy” float around you more? Like, rather than pouring out of you in an upwards drip, it fills the air around you, floats, even kind of orbits?

Regardless of the answers to the above, I also gotta ask: will it trail behind me when I run?

Just a thought! Because I love that aura to death. I’m 99% sure that that is going to be my combat aura of choice.

Obviously a bit early in

Obviously a bit early in development to ask but:

If you unlock/puchase a full body aura, that includes body, hands, and eyes, do you then have the full body aura, the eye aura, the hand aura, and the torso aura, that you can use individually, or would each of those be a separate purchase/unlock?

Can you select more than one aura that doesnt overlap, say energy around your hands and energy around your eyes?

If you CAN select more than one, is AURA COLOR just a single uniform option, or can each of those have a different color (ie Purple eye aura, Blue hand aura) ?

Suggestion - can we have half auras, that allow color and texture mix/match?

A few notes:
1. Can we add auras to weapon nodes? I want a flaming sword
2. I think if you just do all/most of the auras COH had by i24, that should satisfy most people
3. People are being silly (I think) about the toasters, but maybe a "debris field" type of aura? Like your character is magnetic.

IS THAT AN IDLE FLYING POSE???? CAN WE GET SELECTABLE FLYING IDLE POSES????

Toasters?! Too much After Dark screensaver nightmare memory! (What’s next? Flying Pigs?)

I agree with cybermitheral, a ghost of ones movement would look verynice indeed!

In that vein-IF it’s possible to Ghost Ones Self, or as i saw in another suggestion, a Ghost Samurai Archer, would it then be too much to customize a “ghost aura” costume that would be used (ie an aura costume slot) to depict the “spirit” that haunts/guides you?

Necromancy themed auras like

Necromancy themed auras like ghostly faces, skulls, and general inky darkness would be great.

One kind of aura/effect not shown in this sneak peek is a sort of "trail" effect. This might simply be because the tease doesn't show the characters moving around, for all we know it might already be part of the effects. Trails would work great for something like icy mist, darkness, flowers and leaves, smoke, swarms of bugs, just about any aura you can think of. It slides off the character and lingers behind them briefly before fading away. This style of effect could be used for a great many styles and even work in conjunction with more standard auras. For instance, that flaming aura looks great, but also having the ability to leave a brief trail of fire behind you as you moved would be cool as well. Keeping these two effects (the aura and the trail) distinctly separate options would allow a lot of variety in costume and character design.

Very cool, and this is the sort of "crunchy" update that I prefer to see over Lore, but as the update itself admits its a small update. Don't get me wrong, I'm not demanding every update be massive, just acknowledging the limits in this case for what they are.

Tidbits we confirmed from this update:

* some auras will be available right out of the gate
* some will be unlocked ingame
* some will be through the store

As I mentioned in the cash shop thread, I'm perfectly fine with the game needing to make money to continue. If some things need to be gated to make that happen, so be it. I would strongly encourage that all costume options be visible within the Avatar Creator with a toggle for available/purchasable for us costume addicts to be able to play with designs in order to know what we want to purchase. And I think this was at least semi-confirmed as being the case (all costume piece toggle) in the creator?

Additional info:

* auras can be isolated to "[eyes]... and each hand, each foot, and the torso. or maybe a full body aura is more your style"

I'm not sure of the wording here, does "each" hand/foot mean auras could be set such that I have, say, a flaming left hand and an electrified right hand?

Visually we're show what I'd guess are full-body auras for Kirby Krackle, flames, storm/lightning, and "orbitals".

Are the auras color-customizable? Could the Krackle be red and green instead of purple/black, for example?

The compression makes the storm aura a little difficult to see, it is supposed to be something like a mini storm cloud with crackling lightning, correct?

I'm guessing the orbital objects can be chosen from a fairly wide number of in-game objects? How many objects are allowed, can they be scaled up/down in size? Color-changed?

Is that a new hover animation or something specific to the orbital aura?

1. What a great idea! I am very much looking forward to seeing how the emission nodes are going to be handled.
2. I would agree that I would love to see all the “original” auras return.
3. WHAT!? You would deny TSP Woman her aura???? Okay, yeah that was a bit of a joke, but if the toasters were available, I would have to make a TSP Woman to capitalize on it. Which would of course mean a power effect that looks like volcanic hot raspberry filling projected from her hands... or maybe mouth... would be needed,

On a serious note, the fourth aura would be nice if it were selectable: say maybe 5-6 options for what is orbiting, a 3-4 options for how they orbit (single, electron, chaotic, etc) and options for where (head, hand, body). Ambitious, but would make one aura into 50+ auras.

Also, although no one has mentioned it yet (I think because the visuals are more subtle and lost a bit in the wash from the fire aura), Tempest DEFINITELY approves of the cloud aura with lightning flashes!! Can’t wait to see that in higher definition. Now who do I start paying off to make that selectable at charge???

Love seeing the aura's and available right outta the gate is great!

One question: How much control will we have to vary an aura? For example, can we select the flaming aura but then adjust the color to anything we want or does it only come in the fiery red and are there any controls for range out from the body/body part the aura emanates from? It's okay if we don't get those kinds of control but man if we do then these aura's just got X10 better!

Suggestion, a technomantic aura something like seeing the electromagnetic spectrum as communications are zipping by and around a character would be cool. (Something similar to what we saw in Alphas 2011-2012 Gary Bell character.)

I really like the idea of a

I really like the idea of a ghost aura that leaves an afterimage of your character behind.

I am also hoping for some sort of customization factory for auras. Color selection seems like it should be an absolute must. I would also like to see amplitude so you can get just a small faint aura, or an massive occluding blaze or anywhere in between. And finally, someone suggested a directional control and that would also be pretty sweet, so it looks like the aura rises up, falls, or seems to be pushed by some wind.

Without such a factory, I hope we get enough auras to cover most of the bases. I am sure that they will add more and more throughout the life of the game.


I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

Will we be able to combine different auras? For instance, having one effect on the eyes, a different one on the hands, have some levitating objects floating around, and have a body aura and a trail behind as I move?

e: I know someone already asked about half auras and auras that don't combine, but having the ability to overlap some auras is interesting too. I'm sure there would need to be some kind of limitation on that, especially when combined with the possible aesthetics of various powers. Perhaps some auras could be deemed "non combat" or "combat" as well, which would allow more options without turning characters into eyeball and framerate destroyers. Even so, the ability to mix some effects can be potentially interesting.

e2: While all the auras teased look great, the floating objects aura has huge potential for variety above and beyond the others. Swap those little globes out for swords, skulls, shields, any other prop you can think of.

I love what ya'll have done. And the suggestions here are all definitely worthy of repeating. Because I have a dark magic based character, the haunted spirit as aura would be a heck of a neat idea. If we get the ability to make a four legged character, you just sacrifice one costume slot to the aura's appearance and it would suddenly take on all kinds of roles: ghostly presence, spirit animal, cursed artifact, etc, it would fit all those needs within the limits of an aura.

Later, if you want to add sidekicks/animal friends/what-have-you, you'll have built a way to reference those same points and worked out the kinks, hopefully. Or you can use it as a second-pass bug squash while implementing the sidekick style ability. Definitely an idea to build a bridge for later development and multiple uses.

I would like to add, while the lack of actual ocular bits is an added creepiness (would look great for demonic or angelic based characters!) can we also get the ability to retain an eyeball along with the aura? And while we're discussing eyes, would it be a combat aura for the all-black eyes? I was thinking how neat it would be if you have combat aura that started on your first attack and resembled about 80% of what we've seen on TV since Willow went dark on Buffy. Black eyes, tendrils of color/words/power working its way up and into them, power coruscating around their body, and finally the big bada-boom. So, power, combat aura, or just aura?

Now, about those toasters. How else can you build an effective Powder Milkbread Man without it? Ever notice how during a hurricane or disaster, the things gone first are milk and bread? Like they're going home to soak their bread in milk and slurp it up before the power goes out? No! They're putting out a summons! Seriously, you may as well make a library of a variety of items to have circling. Someone will NEED a snowglobe to make their concept complete...

I would love to see the levitating items aura reference a great deal of the prop assets in the game. Some unique props are great but I'm sure there are a ton that are already finished that could be plugged in.

It would also be cool so see a variety of item auras. Spin clockwise, counterclockwise, halo around the head, two sets spinning in an X that cross over chest and shoulders. Even more impressive if each is a distinct aura that could be stacked or set as combat/noncombat/social.

By social I mean something similar to SMITE's use of out of combat emotes. Combat and non combat auras are obvious, but an additional "social" setting would allow for even more auras and effects by limiting them in a small way. Namely doing things like requiring them to be manually activated rather than automatically turning on when you enter/leave combat and putting a cooldown on them to prevent spam.

On weapon auras - currently

On weapon auras - currently we can't. Auras and weapons are using the same system to attach to the character so they can't easily share space. There are plans to work around this, but they are for post-launch. It's an MMO, we can always get better, find new solutions, and so on.

There will be at least some color control.

Being able to swap what's orbiting was our first thought as well. Unfortunately due to how the aura is made, allowing the player to do so is not easy. It is easy on our end, however, so at least we can easily provide a very wide range of orbit auras for you to choose from. And as always, there's no telling what tomorrow (or a year post-launch) will bring.

This could be worked in easily (I'm no dev, i have no idea if it's easy) if the aura has a few different sliders; color, intensity (this might adjust, for example, the fire aura by adjusting the 'distance' the fire reaches so you could have it two feet off your body or two inches, and opacity. Maybe there is another or two that others might also want?

- ground cracking and heaving beneath the avatar
- electrical arcs playing across the avatar - like thor during the finale of thor: ragnarok
- spirits flowing around the avatar, fading in and out, perhaps changing colors
- mystical symbols and glyphs,
- snowstorm/rainstorm that increases and decreases in intensity
- a cloud or field of darkness that obscures varying parts of the avatar
- smoke, which is akin to the mist of the 3rd option shown but more pronounced. similar to the darkness but more translucent. can also be a normal cloud.
- vegetation, primarily vines & leaves - sort of 'greenman/groot-esque'
- decay, either of vegetation or materials - this might be a bit more difficult to effect in code
- force aura, akin to the biotic aura from the mass effect series
- the orbs are great - agree a selection of different orbit patterns and various orbital objects would be sweet
- any of the CoH auras, of which a few overlap with these suggestions

great update - especially the hovering toon. looking forward to seeing the next update that required additional polishing and was impressive enough that this one was considered an appetizer to tide us over

Bet any "buzzsaw" type chars would love to have circular saw blades orbiting instead of orbs. *grin* They'd swoon if the that aura could be tied to a damaging defensive shield-type power.

In addition to the weather-type auras others have mentioned, such as raining/snowing clouds, etc., would also love to see cyclonic/funnel winds that were rising instead of just swirling or falling. Carry your own mini-tornado around with you. Same for a volcanic version, so you could spout little lava rocks and sparks that would fly up from your "eruption" and shower down around you.

Also, would be fun to have different auras be able to link to different powers in your set. So a "elementalist" could chill out when tossing ice attacks, or flame up with fire blasts, etc.

As for aura suggestions, I think all the ones that have come to my mind have already been listed above, but some I'd like to especially see are:
* Elemental Auras - especially Electricity/Storm/Frost
* Insects/Bugs circling around the character
* Various types of "Holographic armor" that activate in combat
* A skin tight glow/shield around a character - kind of like a Green Lantern's personal shield.

No. For different objects we will need to create a separate aura for that particular object. As of now, there isn’t a scaler for rotation speed.

How about magic runes/hieroglyphs? One aura could be just glyphs floating at random, but it would be good to also have separate auras of small runes tracing out larger patterns around the character, like rings, pentacles, etc.

Along similar lines, "active" glowing and moving tattoos would be nice.

And of course it makes perfect sense. Foot auras let you have flaming or smoking feet, which are awesome. One-handed auras are a classic whether you're talking about Super-Skrulls or Green Lanterns. Once you have both of those, you basically have one-foot auras already, right? I don't think I've ever wanted that before, but, now I have to ask myself: Am I obligated to create a character that uses this option just because it exists?

This. I would love a full body aura plus a "hands" combat-only aura combined, for example.

Rotating energy shields, mystical energy shields, bone shields, with them evenly spaced out would be interesting.

Full body bubble shield (colorable) with an option for randomly scrolling mystical/cosmic symbols.

On the question of Superman being able to see while doing his "laser eye"? Yes he can. He's used it to do fine carvings and has shown other evidence of selective fire ability that would require his still being able to have his full visual capacity. His blast is derived from his X-ray vision ability which uses an active beam. This was fully described in the original, official, Superman Encyclopedia many years ago (I wish I still had that even if it's getting out of date).

I'm fully aware he can, the question really is should he be able to. Like, realistically which I know realism and comics only have a passing relationship.
