But, sir, surely you realize that turning your gun like that makes it Less Accurate and leads to shooting bystanders, instead of your target? You'd probably be better off just firing bullets from your crotch-al region.

dude.... this a game where a non meta human ninja can jump into the middle of a fire fight with nothing more than a katana and without even an inch of Kevlar on him and fight his way to the other side alive...

Yes, but Crotch Gun! *grin*

Yes, but Crotch Gun! *grin*

I'm not gonna just blanket state that 'sideways' is the wrong way to hold a gun, I've seen pro shooters hit the target either way, but, anecdotally, it makes seeing your targets more difficult, so hitting the Next target, after the first one, seems to be a problem.

Your 'mad ninja', at least, approaches the fight in a professional manner, right? He may, 'magically' survive without getting dead, but his own bladework would be done well.

Yeah, and my AR/Dev would be pretty screwed without her guns, too. Obvious Power Focus, as Champions put it.

My point was another example of how to hold guns. Because reality is so confining.

The major obstacle I see to this kind of power set is the animation / activation time. When those are often measured in fractions of seconds it limits what the artists can pull off that still looks good and makes sense.

'course something like that picture used to summon pets - whether the mastermind types or the controller types - would be quite cool.

Well it would be cool if rather than painting an intricate fireball if my guy could swipe his paintbrush and shoot at my enemy with a fireball, or if I could open a scroll with a fireball already painted on it toward my enemy and have the fireball shoot itself at him. Also? We need other instruments of art like a spray can or a video camera.

The healer class in Tera

The healer class in Tera (forget the name) could cast power up drops (heal and mana, gold and blue) beautiful bubbles about 2 feet in diameter.

They lasted a few of minutes, and there was no limit to total amount beyond casting time within that limit.

People created some very beautiful "bubble art", even if temporary.

Speaking of which, allow that for certian powers!

Ok I will officially add this

Ok I will officially add this as a meta power: droppable objects.

These can be similar to the MM triage healer, acid mortar (lol), stink spewer, caltrops, etc. Or controller healing tree. Or Tera-like power ups like heal and mana.

By the way, I found this more enjoyable as a backup healer. Instead of monitoring, where the healer's "game" is "shooting" fellow players with +hps instead of monsters with -hps, "fire and forget" things once in awhile. They just end up control-clicking aoe mass heal aura anyway, then go to monitor mode.

Just don't limit power design to stuff that shoots out of your body, once per click.

I'd rather "cast" 2 turrets and a healer beam Sauron eye that last a minute each, even if my dps is only half a blaster or scrapper, quite frankly.

Is there a way that we can have at least one attack power that is exclusive to a travel power? For instance superspeed could have a shoulder slam attack power in the set. Something like that.

Been mentioned and maybe confirmed, but a commander of sorts with customize pets, then you can kick someone's ass with flowers....An army of flowers.

But seriously, this has never been done for the genre, and will really bring in a huge crowd. Customization is an huge aspect of mmos, even CO and DCUO lost sight of that. People will not only spend hours on their hero, but the minion as-well, ultimate power imo, best of both worlds (Customization and a power-set).

On a mechanical level I just can't see the benefit of something like, nor how they would differentiated enough between all the travel-power groups.

Now, if selecting a specific travel power unlocked some specific aesthetics for another power then that might work.

And you just made my Flowey reference totally worth it.

Still the idea of using flower minions to kick a criminals ass would be amusing. You could just imagine the awkward conversations in Hardlock

''So which hero put you in here?''
''The new one on the bloc....''
''Oh? What do they do?''
''Create minions''
''Out of what''
''Flowers''
''...Your joking.''
''Nope''
''So one of the new heroes can animate flowers that are strong enough to take on Pyreband members...?''
''The flowers were giggling like school girls too...''
''I think I will just hold my escape plans off then...''

Actually, I would like to see

Actually, I would like to see some amorphic power-set, with armor styles to go alongside of it. I am thinking the Roinesh from Champions Online and Venom/Carnage. Surprisingly, CO did not release any amorphic powers despite having armor styles based upon it. However, the enemies did use powers similar to Carnage and Venom, such as the ability to wrap and pull you. They also traveled from a black pool which was cool.

I want to see power sets that

I want to see power sets that not only look different visually but PLAY differently with different game mechanics. In CoX I felt I had several characters that actually played differently and did different things. With many MMOs, I get the feeling that although my different characters have different animations, they are doing the same thing.

I think (hope) you will be pleased. Duento the nature of aesthetic decoupling, where certain power sets can use similar themes and most / all animations are accessible, power sets had to be deseigned with different mechanics and play styles.

On this topic, however, I think it's important that there be plenty of overlap between sets at the same time. One of the things that made City of Heroes the game it was to me was the number of powersets within each archetype. So, a fire controller and an illusion controller had significant differences from one another, but both still felt like controllers. When you take into account secondaries, and the manner with which different primaries and secondaries interacted, this allowed for a lot of alting within a particular playstyle. With crowd control, for example, I find many games limit you to very narrow choices if they even make it viable at all, so you're really stuck with a single build if that's the kind of character you want to play.

City of Heroes I think had it just about perfect when it came to mechanical distinctiveness among sets of a particular type.

Overlap will exist, as well as viability between sets and pairings (within ranges of bounds of performance of course), but viability will exist.

The reason many games limit crowd conrtol is because it is one of the most difficult mechanics to get 'right', particularly if PvP exists. Hence, it is easier to design and maintain parity of crown control has serious limits. Controlling in CoH PvE was certainly fun, but even the crontrol sets saw changes over time because initially it was too effective. Since we will have entire power sets dedicated to Control, we aren't shying away from all the difficulties it represents. In fact, we are taking control effects a step further and making them all non-binary. That is, all controls will have an effect even if the target ins't fully controlled.

Now, with regards to sets of similar play styles, over lap, and mechanics, allow me to clarify something. If you go back to CoH and look back at some of the melee sets, many of them not only shared similar mechanics, and even animation times, their only distinction was how they looked. When you take how something may look out as a factor for distinction, what you are left with are the mechanics. Sets that are under the same play style that can possibly even use the same damage type, and possibly have the same animations since animations will be a customization option, in order to provide distinction, we apply a "theme" to the set. The Set's Theme provides the 'tone' for how a set functions, it stipulates what mechanics it uses.

This was mentioned in one of our earlier updates. The example given as taking a set that might be called Burning Blast. The theme is Burning, and we decide that "burning" is something occuring over time, so the Burning theme for offense sets will leverage the mechanic of Damage over Time. Now it doesn't matter if one player has green goo that sizzles its target away shot out of the character's mouth, while another player shoots flame from a rifle, while both using the same power set of Burning Blast.

Assault Rifle

Assault Rifle
Dual Pistols
(Trick) Archery

What do all these powersets share in common as a "theme" ...? Use of Projectiles At Range. All of them were about "tossing projectiles downrange" to achieve effects ... everything from crowd control to hit point debuffing (*cough*). In other words, the projectiles carried "payloads" from the Caster to the $Target ... everything from flamethrowers to grenades to flash bangs to pointy sticks to hot lead that put holes in you.

Theoretically speaking, it might even be possible, thanks to being animation agnostic, to group all of these things under a mere couple different Powersets in City of Titans, and then let people decide for themselves whether they want to deliver the projectile effects downrange out of a pistol, a rifle, a musket, a blunderbuss, a grenade launcher, a bow, a crossbow, a pet, an armband, their forehead, their chest symbol ... whatever. Heck, if the animators are lacking in challenge, you could potentially even do this kind of thing using baseball pitching animations ... or even cricket ball pitching animations, if you want to add a bit more of an international flavoring to things than just US sports animations.

And that's just ONE example of how City of Titans will be able to 'scramble the deck" of what we used to be able to do in City of Heroes. I prefer to think of it as taking off the training wheels ...

I would love to see a Dimensional theme Powerset. Creating fractured space to either suck an enemy in toward the rip as a snare/bind(Like a gravitational pull) while following it up with pulling a meteor out of a multi dimensional space(mini black hole)
Or even using the same theory as a form of transportation like teleporting.

The Set's Theme provides the 'tone' for how a set functions, it stipulates what mechanics it uses.

Certainly there is some overlap in melee sets in CoH, but I think there are plenty of examples that show a wide breadth overall. Consider these sets:

  • Katana - Notably Divine Avalanche for substantial defense self-buff.
  • Spines - Much greater emphasis on AoE, including a damage aura, and slows as a secondary effect.
  • Claws - The follow-up mechanic, which has a significant impact on how you leverage the damage buff.
  • Stone Melee - Very high DPA single-target attacks with strong control effects attached (most notably Seismic Smash), and a short-range AoE zero-damage control effect in Fault.

These sets I think show plenty of distinctiveness, and this is not considering some of the later sets like Titan Weapons' Momentum, Kinetic's Power Siphon and Dual Blades' combinations. Just a couple of unique powers and mechanics can make the melee sets play quite differently.

This is not to say that I dislike the approach being described. Aesthetic decoupling sounds great. In reference to Archery, Assault Rifle and Dual Pistols being brought up, there is some significant overlap (Archery and Assault Rifle each have a snipe, a ST stun, and a short-recharge crashless tier 9). But, I think there is also enough mechanically that lumping them together as one set would lose a lot. Assault Rifle has a greater emphasis on cones, the ignite patch power and lack of an Aim power, for example. Notably, with dual pistols, there is ammunition switching. That strikes me as a good candidate for aesthetic decoupling actually; the concept would work just as well for a spellcaster choosing to harness different elements for example.

My point was simply in response to the notion that many MMOs don't provide enough mechanical distinction between characters. In a sense my complaint on many MMOs is the opposite; that there is often only a single mechanical representation of entire playstyles. A huge part of the charm for me in City is the option to play many characters that feel mechanically distinct enough to be a new experience, but lie within the same archetype.

Considering the decoupling of

Considering the decoupling of mechanics and aesthetics I'm pretty sure they are planning for each set within an AT to feel unique enough as to "warrants its own existence" so to speak. If I have understood it correctly it will be done fairly closely to how CoH did it in that, in addition to secondary effects, it will be done through a somewhat preferred play style or focus. That is that some sets will be noticeably better at certain tasks then other sets (like AoE or single target), or have fairly "unique" mechanic (like DP's ammo switch).

Now, the thing is that we have to add in the aesthetics into this since expressing the same power in different ways will, well, make them feel different. Thus two people with the exact same power set, and even the same powers chosen, may feel like their combat is completely different from each other due to choosing different aesthetics.

Two aesthetics I want are Dual Blades (preferably daggers, to re-create my main) and Combat Tentacles.
I pretty much need the former, but are happy to wait a while for the latter. And it doesn't matter if the pseudopods are wrist/hip/back/chest mounted or just break forth from the ground (dimensional portal maybe?),
to strangle and/or whack around my vict...umm opponents.
Also it would be nice if I could use them to swing around the city... or just pick my toon up and throw it across the map =P

I'll just point out that since CoH lasted an extra 7+ years AFTER they nerfed the overpowered fire tanks that I'll take it as a sign it was ultimately the right thing to do. I remember all the people who freaked out claiming the game would die the minute that nerf was installed because EVERYONE would stop playing. Obviously that exaggeration proved to be very far from the truth.

For what it's worth you can at least enjoy your fond memories of being able to play with an obviously unbalanced/overpowered powerset/AT combo while it lasted. We can only hope the CoT Devs have remembered that lesson so they won't have to go through the trouble of having to nerf anything like that in the first place. *shrugs*

And, if they DO have to nerf a 'whoops' like that, it's not the end of the world, despite what players might say.

Case in point: There was a period around 6 to 9 months after CoH's launch where we had 3 or 4 nerfings that bit-by-bit reduced Fire Controller Imps from a click power that originally allowed 3-6 even-level Imps per casting to a toggle power that only allowed exactly 3 Imps that were permanently -1 level. That was a huge nerf when you consider there were relatively easy ways (through Hastened overlapping castings) to maintain on average something like 6-10 Imps going at all times. It was a literal "Army of One" scenario years before Masterminds even existed in the game.

Being that my original main character in CoH was a Fire Controller who had only managed to get to level 50 a couple of months prior to the beginning of those nerfs you can say I was extremely annoyed/upset. I even complained about it on the forums on the basis that it was "ruining" my main character. But even while I was complaining I knew full well I was essentially abusing/exploiting the Fire Imp power and that I had become stupidly overpowered with it. I might not have been able to herd entire maps of critters at one time like the Fire Tanks could but I could do almost as well as most of them. It really was that broken.

So for some months after the nerfs I was still ticked off about it. I didn't absolutely "ragequit" the game like some did, but I remained bitter. I started focusing on other alts and had fun in other ways. Eventually I came to accept that nerfs on things like the Fire Tanks and Fire Imps really were necessary and did in fact ultimately help the game by making other powersets/ATs more desirable to play. Eventually I got over my Imp nerfing and enjoyed the game for how much better it had become over the years.

I had a similar reaction to the changes in Energy Melee. They turned my high-energy speed-boxing main character into a 'slow but powerful' one and I... just stopped pushing him. I ran off and played a hundred alts, had a great time and, when I finally returned to my Main, I just disgustedly went to work figuring out how to get the feeling going again.

I couldn't do it without Set IOs - I needed to spread the slots to more powers, put more powers into my attack chains, and depend on Set Bonuses to get enough enhancement and make it work. It was a serious PITA and I never did recapture the old feeling completely, but I did, finally, get him to 50 and Incarnated. Because the biggest change they made to Energy Melee was not in any of its Stats, not Damage or Endurance or Recharge. No, they changed the Animations and there was no way for a player to affect how long those animations took to play out, each and every time a power was used.

And why did they nerf my favorite Tanker Melee power? Because Villains, and later, Scrappers would have been OP with it. That was pure cruelty, from my point of view.

So I'm utterly stoked to hear that CoT plans to have variable-speed animations!

Animation-wise, I'd love to see something like Kinetic Melee. I built Kid Magus (the character in my profile icon) using KM and the flowing animations fit perfectly for his concept of a hand-to-hand combat mage who used quick-cast spells to augment his skill in fisticuffs.

Fiery Melee.

Fiery Melee.

Now I now the theme would be fire, but defining the base is a little bit of a challenge. What I liked about the way COH did it was that sometimes you formed a fire sword and used that to attack with. So maybe the base is that you conjure an item and attack with that whether it is a fire sword, flames around your hands, or a dragon's breath. So maybe for animation you could have things like sword (like fire sword, fire sword circle, and greater fire sword), hammer(similar to sword just with hammer), surrounded hands(like energy punch for energy melee) or maybe streaming flames(like scorch, cremate, or fire breath). You might also be able to include dark melee in here by just changing the animation. The thing with COH is that the power sets tended to have a combination of different types of animation. For example, fiery melee had a summoned component like fire sword, and a streaming like scorch, while dark had surrounded hands like shadow maul and a summoned component like midnight grasp. So maybe there should be a couple of different bases. One that used the same summoned object for all powers and one called something like energy melee, which used some combination of summoned object, surrounded hands, and streaming depending on the power was used.

Also I was wondering, since the power set is broken up into three areas, can you change the Theme and Animation on a per power base, or is it defined on the whole power set. I assume the base is defined on the whole power set, but are the other two??

Theme, like "Fire" is defined as part of the set. Animation is independent, so, you can use fists, swords, kicks, hammers, wombats, etc....

The mechanical theme is what essentially defines the power set, what I'll assume you refer to as "base", and is "locked" for the entire set but the aesthetic themes can be set on an individual powers level afaik.

Punch Ghosts/Stands, really

Punch Ghosts/Stands, really any sort of transformation power, Minions, Vehicles, Mechs, and just really bizarre or out there powers, such as the ability to control Chicken Noodle Soup, and only Chicken Noodle Soup. Anything over the top.

And while more of an effect, I'd really enjoy being able to use and affect the environment. Throw a car, accidentally knock over a building, or even just animations that imply something over the type, like punching a mook offscreen, only to catch them or pull them up.

Oh, and anything involving music. Literal face melting guitar solos.

I think the vast majority of

I think the vast majority of the game maps ought to be "hard" in the "non-destructible" sense of the word. That said, you can always add in some break-away props on top of that and make them look like part of the scenery until they get broken. GW2 has this, you're walking around in a cave, there's a pile of rubble that lloks like the rest of the rubble, except when you mouse over it it lights up and you can attack it or interact with it by pressing "f", then it changes and looks different or disappears altogether.

Another thing that game has is the ability to pick up some objects. Like you'll be a in a cave, there are rocks on the floor, SOME of them will light up when you mouse over them and those can be interacted with. When you walk near the rock and press "f". you pick it up and now your attacks are all replaced with blank spaces while you're wielding the rock. While you have the rock, you can either throw it, using the "Throw Rock" power you now have in your tray, or else just set it down at your feet, as all objects can be set down. Then other objects will have different uses which appear as temp powers essentially but only while you're holding the object. Shovels can be used to dig, torches can be used to light fires, etc.

In the one mini-dungeon, there are 9 pressure plates on the floor and 9 rocks strewn around the place. On the wall is a pattern of lights and if you match the pattern by placing rocks on the corresponding plates, it opens a door and you can go in and open the treasure chest. I think stuff like that is fun and adds a little "sumpm-sumpm" to the game.

Right, but in GW2, those

Right, but in GW2, those random rocks/sticks/skulls/scrapmetal/bones are Everywhere and usually have no particular purpose. By replacing your 'powers' they actually weaken you. What possible use is a 'wooden plank' if you can't actually do anything useful with it?

If they were collectible and you could give a stack of them to a random peasant, who then Built something with them, that would be cool. Or, if you could make something, or change the environment a little, by collecting and using those random drops, that could be Interesting. However, in GW2, most of the time they're just random junk.

Granted, there are several locations where one can stack rocks on platforms to unlock puzzles. Cool use of the environment.

Earthquake AOE will probably kill more civilians than someone shooting a gun sideways.

Who watches for civilians while fighting in the streets in a video game?

Powers go right through them, they cannot be targeted in games like DCU and CO so that logic makes no sense.

Disturbingly cool and you gave me an idea.

It would be cool to customize the short-time summons, but maybe I am asking for too much. I think it would be a neat aspect of the game. This would truly make a hero feel badass. You can only do so much with commander pets. Size must be considered, not so much with a flashy summon.

Maybe I get a summon that is so large, it can only fit an appendage or just an eye through the portal, and so has to carry the portal around with it. Or maybe I get a little white bunny rabbit with fangs and "a vicious streak a mile wide!" Not knowing what I'll get could be half the fun. Will it be a spell caster, a melee brute, a poison spitter or an armored beast? I don't know; but I do know that if I call it, it will sure be a bad day for my enemies.

Of course I have no idea which summons we are referring to, but surely there could be a summoning ability that brings forth the most terrible creature from another world for 30 seconds.

So let me ask, to be sure I'm

So let me ask, to be sure I'm understanding the base/theme/animation thing right. How would something like, say, Street Justice work?

Base: Strength?
Theme: Offense?
Animations: Brutal, boxing/muay thai style brawling?

See, the way I always imagined my street justice main playing out was that he was super strong, but less in the "hulk smash/mr. incredible" rough and tumble style, but more in the "Spider-man" style. Super strong, but not INSANELY strong. More on the side of nimble, fast enhanced strength. Not sure if I'm expressing what I'm thinking properly. I understand that Street Justice was, as it was released in CoH, a "brawling, street fighter, ryu v ken" powerset, and not actually super strength. I just liked to pretend that it was. Would something like that be possible in CoT?

I want my Street Justice/Invulnerability guy back!

Name: Safehouse
Magical Ranger - Gunner
Primary: Lethality (Energy)
Secondary: Invulnerability
Tertiary: Super Strength
Travel Power: Parkour
Status: Traveling. Following rumors of a huge city in Massachusetts that is teeming with supers.

And sounds pretty easy to do. Big portal, one large eye inside, does 1,000,000 damage, then portal closes. It is fairly simple, in theory.

Champions Online had ultimate powers, and they usually included a huge spider, hydra, or some other flashy animation. It would be neat to see those in CoT. I would like to see ultimate that are not like other powers, these can actually mean something. They can produce a huge game changing boost, with a longer cool-down or something.

Here are some examples.

Buffs, like transformations

Projectiles

Heals

Summons like CO had

Sets slated for launch:
Quote:
Protection
Burning · Agility · Invulnerability · Solid Form · Grit
Melee
Super Strength · Burning · Brawn · Dark · Kinetic
Ranged
Force · Burning · Kinetic · Psychic · Dark
Support
Heat Generation · Sonic · Devices · Force Field · Kinetic
Control
Gravity · Mind · Cold · Illusions · Force
Dark armor and/slash stealth for Protection.
Please be aware that those sets aren't entirely correct in either name or launch status. There was an issue that caused an early list to be pulled. We're working on updating it.

Oh, well that's frustrating for everyone :p Good news though, tbh ;)

I would love to see a Dimensional theme Powerset. Creating fractured space to either suck an enemy in toward the rip as a snare/bind(Like a gravitational pull) while following it up with pulling a meteor out of a multi dimensional space(mini black hole)
Or even using the same theory as a form of transportation like teleporting.

and also weather control is a must

My son (who is 21 and literally grew up playing City of Heroes with me) would flip the flip out if this happened. One of his favorite heroes he made up is an alien with these types of powers.

FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)

I second that motion. Gravity/dimensional and weather themes are practically staples among so many works featuring superhumans, especially among high-tier supers whose powers manifest on an awesome scale. ^_^

Also Atrphic Control,

Also Atrphic Control, Vampiric Control, Vampiric Melee and Vampiric Aura for defense sets. A ranged set that uses Tactical Combat's combo system, maybe even a support set that uses TC's combo system or a control power that does it too

(CoH) I liked how the travel

(CoH) I liked how the travel powers had fighting abililtes and Buffs in their trees. In the TP set teleport foe was incredibly effective. The teleport power I remember being pretty lousy especially when you had to use it 7 odd times to get from instance to instance/ mission door whathaveyou. Of all the hate I could shed upon Champions Online, I won't I'll just say that the graphics of their teleport was really good. I would like to see the Assault Rifle make a return maybe marry it up with the Beam Rifle. For Melee I had many large body type tanks, though the powersets for a Brute I enjoyed the most used the battle axe power set basically just wading in knocking foes left and right. I used to love taking on massive hordes and I anticipate doing so again!

Not sure if this has been

Not sure if this has been suggested, but how about a powerset similar to the Darkness from Top Cow. A sort of shadow brawler, but with a DOT that is comprised of little imp/demon things. You start with none (or maybe one), and as the fight progresses more and more spawn (like the demonology lock from wow). It's a DOT that ramps up. Obviously each little bugger is on a timer and "dies" after a certain period of time. Possibly even add in a power that allows you to "sacrifice" all of the imps and causes an AOE of sorts. (Like the mesmer from GW2). There could even be different buffs/debuffs/effects depending on how many imps make it out. Like the first few act as dps, but randomly one "casts" a daze or something. Just added, random chaotic effects.

Just a thought

That sounds almost like the kinetic energy set.

Quote:

Kinetic Melee debuffs the damage of targets hit with its abilities creating a buff to its own damage. As Kinetic Melee’s momentum increases, this damage buff becomes more potent.

I know we have aesthetic decoupling, but I wonder if a certain amount of aesthetic coupling is actually being represented in the game such that the number of sprites in the effects increases with the magnitude of the buff/debuff. If it is, then all the devs would need to do is make sure that one of the sprite options is dark imps.

I know you were discussing a DoT that builds rather than a buff/debuff that builds, but because it is so similar to Kinetic Melee it seems like it would be pretty straightforward for a new set design.

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

Soooo.... I'm not going to

Soooo.... I'm not going to attempt to read through all of the posts to see if it was suggested, and it probably has been multiple times, but I would love to see a Sonic Sound type power set. In CoX I had a Blaster called Hevvy-metal that used his voice to take out enemies. He would "sing" to throw his enemies back, paralyze them with ear drum piercing pain, or slow them down with a single long note. Would love to bring him back to "Rock" the Super hero world.
Also, my mainstay hero was starrball. He developed a power-suit to draw in residual radiation from the air around him, magnify, and then re-direct it at his enemies. He could snipe, stun, and blast enemies from a distance. His ultimate move, which sacrificed his own life to perform (I used it only when I was low on health because it took so much AP to use) was a "nuke" attack called Supernova that did MASSIVE damage to everything within a 50 ft radius.
I hope that a power set similar to that is in here.

Thanks Cobalt Azurean! I've been peeking in every so often to check the progress you guys are making, and I can't wait for the release. I've been getting the MMO itch recently, and just can't find one that meets the bar that CoX set....

Sounds like it could be Force

Sounds like it could be Force Blast with an aero animation/fx coupled to it.
