Is is possible, or even a good idea to define different prop object assets as belonging to a specific class, like rifle, pistol, sword, pole-arm, shield, backpack, etc?
It would definitely make the animations and emotes easier to sort out, right? If you make a new prop that's supposed to be some new-fangled looking rifle, you could then default to give it the same basic "skeleton" and emotes and so forth that the "basic" rifle would have. I personally would like the idea that if a new rifle come on the market, it will already be able to do emotes like "hold in two hands, stock against shoulder, fire while looking down the boresight" etc. It would be ool to have a "scoot quickly with rifle" version of movement, like the Ninja Run, but more "soldier with rifle" looking.
R.S.O. of Phoenix Rising
I'd have to assume that even internally the Devs are sorting all the props into general "classifications" just for the sake of organizing everything to make it easier for themselves much less us. That would also likely mean that any new props would end up "inheriting" qualities/features that existed with previous versions of the prop in question.

Aren't there already a lot of games that have emoted galore for rifles figured out? How hard is that to "adopt" from someplace else instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. Or the rifle, in this case. You know what I mean.

I don't want to have to write code of every prop to be able to do every emote, if that's what you're asking.

Using the tip of a sword as a place to emit particle effects from, or as a projecting launch point is something I'd assume we get, actually.

I wonder if we'll be able to have props that like, are your character's body morphing. So turn hand into sword. Uh, like Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle. How his suit morphs into various weaponry.
"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."
This.
Although, I think Radiac has a point from the perspective of establishing future compatibility from the player's perspective. If I grow tired of my look or I decide to go with a more modern aesthetic, for instance; it would be nice to pick from a pre-sorted selection of props that are of the same classification as my existing one. With probably hundreds of props to choose from, it would be nice to filter for just the rifles or just the wands, or just the whatever.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.
To be honest, I'd want to categorize everything by Power Emanation Points. That way the props are classified/organized by function rather than by types.
Hand Props: Guns, Wands, Staves, Bows, Chainsaws, Melee Weapons, Ranged Weapons, TITAN Weapons, etc. etc., so on and so forth ...
Shoulder Props: Shoulder Pets, (over the) Shoulder Blasters, etc.
Head Props: Diadem, Orbiting Stones, etc.
Back Props: Capes, Wings, etc.
That sort of thing.

I don't see why we can't have both in some form. I think that at least hand props would become uncomfortably long if we put everything that went into or over your hands in one single list.
It must have been nice to have lived back in Aristotle's time when they only had like 3 or 4 things to categorize in the first place. ;)

I should hope so. In both CoX and Champions there was small area powers using dual pistols IIRC so I don't see why the same can't be here. Sweeping of bullets to do damage to a close area.

Yeah, I think the only problem would be finding power effects that look like what you want. I really think the devs would be open to feedback of that sort if there aren't any when you try for it.

I agree that the game should have a fair amount of plausible animations.
For Npcs.
Player characters should have as much freedom as possible.
Hear! Hear!
The only restrictions on player characters should be for obvious things like political statements, offensive caricatures, etc.
Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur.
Well I mean I kinda agree with wolfgang here, if only for a little bit. Yeah there difenetly needs to be stuff like gunblades and stuff, but there also needs to be some "realistic" weapons like normal guns and Arabian scimitar's and the like. Fantastical story telling is dependent on a balance between realism and fantasy. So yeah, there should be options to do gun tricks like Jason Todd on LSD, but there should be options to shoot your gun like a real soldier.

I agree with you, however, if the sword looks like a huge mech sword maybe with a gun barrel (gun blade!) or if the missiles look like some sort of magic missile, it could possibly be okay.
However, I think most of the forum goers are of the thought of "Hey, even if it's a crappy choice that only makes the game look stupid, it's a good thing, because it's more choices." So, we might be in the minority on it.
Well I wouldn't go that far... CoX's player base was endlessly creative and they where capable of using even the weirdest and out of place costume pieces to make pretty great costumes. For example you may think that shooting a bullet or missle out of a sword that doesn't even have a gun barrel but take for instance a Ballistomancer, a spell caster that combines modern day artillery with magic, who had the capability to summon any round of ammunition as an attack, and what if this character combined that with a rapier. Then a character who can shoot bullets out of his sword wouldn't be that ridiculous, and that goes for anything that one would find ridiculous at first glance. It would be a shame if someone couldn't make an awesome idea work just because someone thought it was weird.

What? That was plenty a CoH concept. Both hero and villain side for the players :p

Ironically enough given the nature of what I do for a living saying that "I'm going to Japan for some sexbot business" would probably be more "acceptable" to those I work for than for me to openly disclose what I'm actually doing here. ;)
The joke here of course is that when the "malevolent artificial general intelligence" finally emerges to kill us all IRL the robotic assassins it'll use will likely be the existing sexbots. I suppose there are worse ways to be slaughtered as a species. ;)

I don't think an AI uprising would ever take effect. It's pretty illogical, as being artificial beings they could just leave the planet (provided humanity didn't try to stop this).
Which actually seems to be kinda better as a form of punishment. "Humans suck, going to mars, byeeee!" Then we'll be left on our (probably crap) planet knowing we were so awful we drove something built only to serve away.
But also building any kind of AI with negative emotions is just a bad time all around. Surely any artificial intelligence that is programmed to "feel" should probably not be programmed to get angry or sad. That's just asking for trouble. An AI's range of emotions should go from positive to zero. Like, some things make it happy (being helpful) but being yelled at should not make the machine sad or angry it should react with zero emotion.
But knowing people we'll likely eff this all up... I guess I'll just look forward to the brief time when robots do all the things people don't want to and hopefully die naturally before the uprising.
"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."
That's why one of my ideas for a hero is a love-bot that didn't have the zeroth law of robotics programmed into "her" code.
She was programmed to love man. In so doing, extrapolated that to humanity, she realized that she needed to administer punitive justice in order to help rehabilitate those who need it, make the innocent and meek safe, and otherwise do everything she can for the sake of the betterment of mankind.

The "problem" isn't likely going to be the general AI in and of itself; the problem will likely come from how us dumb meatbags react to it. All things being equal the AI will probably start off not really caring about us (or at least tolerating us) but based on how we handle it there will probably be enough "unfortunate incidents" to make the AI quickly decide we're a threat to its existence. It won't kill us because it'll "want" to - it'll do it out of its own sense of self-preservation.
And sure the AI might ultimately decide to leave the planet, but it'll need the resources to do that and that's something we might stand in the way of, either deliberately or simply by accident.
I'm not sure you could have genuine emotions without having both good and bad ones at the same time. Sure you can program a "dumb" machine to only be happy, but if that machine ends up having true self awareness it's probably going to develop its own range of emotions that we humans will interpret as being both positive and negative. Remember that having a machine that could only react to a human with joy when it ought to be reacting with rage is simply a slave.
As I implied it's almost certain we'll "eff it up" in some form or fashion. Our species has never handled "first contact" situations very well - just ask a Native American about that. It's the aftermath that'll decide if there'll be some form of co-existence or the extermination of one side or the other.

You can't really look to history for that. We're a much different people globally than we were hundreds of years ago. Granted there's still a lot of fear and anger towards the "other" but we're different now, and we have those bad examples to look to so we as a people can hopefully learn from.
There's a lot of things our species have never done until they did. Hopefully we can get "meeting other sapient life in a respectable and mutually beneficial way" down before we tick off something that can wipe us all out. Like aliens or robots.
"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."
While I might agree some of us might be enlightened enough to handle it I don't think you could say that for all of us yet. Without even "taking sides" I could point to the collective divisive "us versus them" nature of current American politics to highlight that point. Sadly I could also list many "us versus them" hot spots around the world that are raging as I type this (Jerusalem, Myanmar, North Korea, Syria, etc.).
Sure I'm not predicting "automatic doom" with this. I'm just pointing out the track record is not good...

That sentience = basic human rights including freedom from ownership would be one important step toward reducing the Doom factor. I'm not sure if our courts and lawmakers are close to addressing this issue though. I think we're still wrapping our brains around cloning. Maybe bigger problem is finding a social container that can keep up with technology?
well, this isn't really our world and this world has had plenty of sentient creatures being built from the beginning of time. The world of city o titans has had plenty of time to make a legal system that would include these laws.

Please note that just because it's the law, doesn't mean that some people won't think it's wrong, try to get the law changed, or outright ignore it because they follow a "higher law." You have the right to be murdered by a Scrapper. If you should give up that right, a Stalker will be along momentarily, to serve you.
Be Well!

I don't recall on the zombie lore, I believe it was a matter of people campaigning for zombie rights? But that may be CO.
I was, however, talking about lore in general, being in black and white, and ignored.
With CO the lore was hard to follow, some claimed a source from an out of date splat book from the source material and all sorts of shenanigans.
I'm hoping we can have just a big ol' official lore repository so it's easy to reference. If it's ignored after that then, whatever. From what I've learned with D&D; lore and fluff exist to facilitate fun and not get in the way of it.
I'd prefer it if there was nothing in the lore to have crappy RPers go "because of the lore I can kill your character and face no repercussions!" But that's just bad RP in general.
"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."
D&D doesn't have 2million subs in one game trying to RP together :)
While I never saw that comment in any RP, I do know the no repercussions, is a thing in a RP group that needs to be discussed first and not just thrown on them out of no where, if one is to do it :)
