I've often noticed artists, even ones who are consider the best and greatest, that a lot of their faces look the same. Nebezial (Stjephan Sejic) of DA and professional comic book artist does it. So many of his female faces look the same, so much so I had even asked if one of his pics was a character dressing up as one. :p
That said, I think she needs a mask. Just looked better, but I'm sure you can change it up if you don't like what she had before.

I like this! Sometimes 'the mask' is over-rated.
Some heroes don't need to cover their faces, they simply use amazing hypnotic powers to keep people from noticing that their 'secret identity' has the same face. [b]Or they wear a tie.[/b]

The previous mask does lend to the altogether mysterious and astral-mystic sort of look she has. The starry, shifting costume effect flowed nicely into that mask (if I remember what I was looking at, anyway). Not bad either way. I think it's just a matter of deciding which visual effect or metaphor you want to highlight for the character.

well, after thinkin about it all night I have decided that I like the full mask better for this particular costume. while I like the partial wannabe mask, I just like the look an "feel" that this one provides better....it seems to suit the overall look better.

decided I am going to continue working on the design. it's just for me anyways and I think it is different enough not to be seen as a clone. hopefully once done and colored the similarities will be even further apart.

need to work on the mask. the orange pinstriping I want to make a lil bigger and try and give it a lil glowy effect (operative word being "try"). she would have wings of a sort given the idea being she is much like Cloak (of Cloak an Dagger) in that she is able to summon and manipulate dark force/matter to various effects. need to do something with the moon...perhaps tone is down to a more subdued white.
oh, an added second wing which I actually like. :) although, if I EVER wanted to make some of the costumes I design in a game I am doomed cause it just aint happenin. hehe

so, glowy effect. I think I figured out the "cheezy way" in gimp as some of the test runs seemed "ok" but it is kinda time consuming. I will do a full conversion test tomorrow and post 'er up. it will also include a change or two noted earlier.

fiddled with the glowy effect a lil more. also showing that only the phoenix and the eyes actually "glow", which is obviously easier to see on a solid dark *cough*black*cough* background.
I have also decided I am going to run with The Phantom Phoenix as it rolls of the tongue easy, sounds cool (imo) and matches the look. also decided on text type and even dropped a layer of "glow". still no clue who this gal actually is as of yet...but she is turning into my test subject for practicing "glow" effects in gimp. :) I figure at some point I will give her some character...but need to flesh out a lot more on her look, powers, etc. at present I am actually kinda leanin towards makin her a "badguy"....like really bad....like you see her and she kills ya for the fun of it bad.... I dunno, just first thoughts without lookin to far into it at this point.

Well, as for 'killing for fun', as a dedicated (smart) paladin I don't really support that, but if you Must, then I can't think of anything worse than 'killing them with mind-rays'. Perhaps 'Dream Assassin'... Turn 'the phoenix' inside-out and you've got darkness-powers. Mind Control/Dark? Mind Blast/ Dark?

I'm curious how that glow would look with the rest of the outfit red in color, but that may ruin the image of a phantom.

Hmm, nothing saying there's not a 'normal' state, and a 'phased' state for the character's outfit. Perhaps really dark (bloody) red for the 'dark' areas and gold for the 'bright'? Then she 'phases' and the contrast goes ultra, with brightly-bright and darkity-dark, until she phases right out.
Really dark red and gold just seems to close to Phoenix. Why I was thinking some shade of red with the glow already seen.

so, I did some quick coloring an came up with the following, including the two you two wanted to see. I also threw in a few more, although I am still ealnin towards the white on white. although, can't lie...kinda like that black/white....yes, fireheart...black! :p
when I read about the gold/red combo I was thinkin much along the same lines as Brand X, in that it would be to similar to phoenix....but seeing it now...while the design itself looks different enough to me it does still harken back to phoenix given the symbology and the colors used.

I know that's not your intent, but to my way of thinking that red/gold outfit would be a far better costume for Anthem than any concept art we've seen to date!

With that blue, the black wins out. The white is also good, but feels a bit more hero and less villain.
well, haven't really decided on where she will be going, whether hero or villain. I was toying around with the idea of making her more along the lines of an antihero type, which if I do she would be my first official antihero as all my others have been of the more conventional fare.
white is my fav followed by the black. I could actually change the glow color from the cyan'ish blue that I am using now to anything at all really. but I like it best as it provides the best "feeling" of a ghost or phantom, imo. that said, now that I know how to make this cheapy glow effect I can use for other things where I had wanted to have a glow effect but didn't know how. :)

She could take a cue from two other bird beauties, Birdgirl and Hawkgirl. She can be somebody that was inspired to be a hero by Peregrine after he saved her from a mugging or something, becoming a super obsessive fan and deciding to become Peregrine's sidekick. She quickly becomes frustrated with Peregrine who she believes is being too soft on criminals and breaks away to really bring down crime. She'll be very physical and unforgiving to the criminals she hunts down, her violence leads to Peregrine to have to bring her in.

assuming I went something along this route it would be easily enough to tie into his original disadvantages from his champs pnp days.
basically everything is the same but make the fan his younger sister (DNPC) who was captured by Lord Sovereign (Hunted) who applified her own dormant mental abilities so he could use them for his own purposes. standard torture/interrupted conditioning ensues until wp saves the day...then the rest is basically the same again as you mentioned. well except for the fact they are evenly matched so "bringing her in" is a tad harder than normal not to mention she is his lil sister after all, and all the attempt to "save" her from herself from travelling down the wrong path...
it would explain the bird motif and white costume...powers would also have a similar F/X.

I am suddenly getting wishy washy on the type of wings I want to use. either the standard over the shoulder kind or the type that are attached to the arms. also need to start looking harder at how to "liquefy" them a bit. then there's the question if I want them to "glow" like the suit, gut says yes on that one though.
in the above, fixed some line work, like the eyes which are better defined now.

wings I am looking at being more "symbolic". they are an F/X when she uses her powers kinda thing and are not needed at all for actual flight. trying different things, but nothing is either A. working out how I want or B. Just don't like the look/feel. ...white is a pain to mix other colors with to make a cool lookin power f/x, for the direction I want to go at this time.
I like this f/x..which is akin to what I am trying to replicate in a single frame versus the animated versions here.

sooo, I was all intent of giving her the white suit...I even have this same image in the white version BUT after placing the wings I decided to take a peak at what she would look like with a black suit...and she just 'popped' (imo). as such, this is her default look. I am still looking at the white suit but it will be for when she goes into 'ultra' mode and her suit changes color due to the amount of power coursin through her. (assuming that makes sense...heh)

Green.... Not sure I can picture a speedster in green. I come from the mindset that colors have meanings. Green in earthly tones are nature heroic (Green Arrow and the like.) Where a bright green tends to be a villain color (Green Goblin) or monster heroes people see as Threats Hulk, Swamp Thing, Man Thing. Anyway Green I just don't add to Speed. Thought It could be done Green Lanterns are a good example of Heroes using what others would use as villain shades. Perhaps Green as the shade of a Green Light for Go.

I like all the originals except the straight black with a big leaning towards the first of the four and the last one in the second row of the second set of colors. If going all black and the chest being white and a color, keep the color on the left (smaller side). If going for black just on gloves/boots, go with white on the left (smaller side).
Red is to close to the Flash. Brown is meh. Blue might be pretty good too!

...regarding speedster.
the S going completely across the chest with COLOR/WHITE set up does indeed make me think of the letter F. fiddled around with the lightning bolt like S but not really "feelin" it so I am takin a pass on that for the moment. liking the look of GOLDish/WHITE and black gloves/pants and GOLDish/White and dark green pants with black gloves/boots thus far.
started fiddling around with Lord Soveriegn mask again.
started some prelims for Warpoet, (think yer standard ninja chick with swords, idea being very flowy/dancy in combat versus straight hard moves, assuming that last bit makes sense. heh)
started reworking the piece I started a bit ago with LS and WP.
started back on the prelims for a rework of Crosshart's look...and may change his name over to Crosstech....thinkin along the lines of quasi powered armored bowyer (hence the name change) but I would like to try and work in the Hart still for the ole call back effect to where he started.

...so, given I am not playing anything I have been working on various character concept idea's. two are at the forefront. the first is more a redesign on an existing alt I had in CoH. Warpoet, she was/is yer standard badass chick with dual swords. the 'idea' though is to allow the weapons to morph and/or combine to form various weapons (of the simple variety only...aka: no guns). currently I am tweakin the suit but I suspect I will have something done by the end of the week.
the second is a teen type character combined with the cat theme...although, of the male variety. :p concept is something along the lines of vixen(?) in that he has the ability to assume properties of a large cat except on a super human scale. the "cool" factor being his cat features are energy projections...meaning hands are covered by clawed paws, tail spouts and feet have cat feet that actually project further than his feet, so he is in effect walking on them. never had a true teen type character before, closest I have currently would be Ms Majestic who is 19/20. so I figured what the heck...thinkin along the lines of 15/16...leanin towards the former versus the latter. namewise...lookin at Snowlynx but that will probably change.. suit is really in the air given idea being he is a kid still...so I want to avoid the standard "hero" tights kinda thing...more like the beginnins of a suit...then perhaps show what he would develop into...say 10 years later....

No reason not to dress your teen in sneakers, jeans, shirt, and jacket, maybe a hat. These 'powers' are projections, so the costume doesn't have to adapt and the character can be just another random teen in a mask. Perhaps the 'mask' is a cat-face energy-construct?
Snow? Not unless you want to work cold into the story? What about Star Lynx? Maybe some other source of energy? Is it biological? A product of 'superior kung-fu'? Is it from a talisman? 'Sufficiently advanced science'? Channeling the 'Tiger Force'? A super-rare Male Kitsune? Starfox?
Blathering, I know, but such 'drunkards walks' through my trivia trove is one way that I develop characters for myself.

Warpoet: What's the real concept behind the name? Or, is the concept power-based, and the name just a cool idea, at this point? Depending on the answers and type of poetry, you could go the tartan or skald route, or even the goth/beatnik look. Lots of possibilities!
Male, teen, cat powers: A lot might depend on your concept of heroic costumes. Your artwork so far seems to be pretty true to "classic" costumes. If you're comfortable with that, you might want to keep that up, or you might want to stretch it a bit. I like Fireheart's suggestion. A lot might depend on his origin--a hard core heroic origin story might move you in the direction of a "normal" superhero costume, while something less obviously heroic, or more mystic, or something, might lead you (or the character) to lean toward street clothes or even a non-secret identity.

so, to answer some of the above: mystical in nature, but inherent. clothing is extremely basic...t-shirt, pants, boots and gloves (fingerless), sunglasses. he's a kid and thinks he's immortal, hence not even caring about the secret id thing, while he doesn't actively advertise who he is he also doesn't actively hide who he is. being a superhero is fun and cool and he wants others to know he's cool....and if he helps people in doing so...BONUS!
the above is an example. the clothes need to be done up a lil better, cargo pants (dark tanish), black tee (I love you Fireheart! :p), black combat boots, black gloves), sunglasses which are the same color as his power. his hair is a lightbrownish to match the pants.

...been lookin at names for the kid but undecided at this point. some of the names I have fiddled with (in no particular order): Aeonlynx, NeoLynx, Puma IX, Panthera, and a number of others. the four listed are the ones that currently carry the most weight and that I like. each has their reasonings behind them.
Panthera: his abilities pull from all aspects of the genus panthera.
Puma IX: the nine lives thingy of cats...although now that I think about it...does the nine lives apply to big cats? hmmm
NeoLynx: new kid, new hero...cat abilities.
Aeonlynx: abilities while mystical in nature, it is something that is more like a force of nature. it is a force that has existed for aeons and strives to keep a balance/protect nature kinda thing.
names also need to "flow" and sound pleasing to the ear. as such, some combo's are out. I would rather keep it down to a single word name but I may have to bump it up to two..with the idea being that the "second" word is a more formal naming but otherwise goes by the shortened name (eg: smoke jaguar...but everyone just calls em jaguar).

Sunspeed is the working name but also looking at Sunshine and Sunray.
quickie redesign and basic coloring. besides changing to a female hero, tried basically keeping the same costume lines but redone to include a spectrum of orange to white...a nice bright pallet. the lines ideally will glow which given her name is more apt.

she's a speedster type, dominator in flavor. darkness/darkness...albeit I would have made everything as bright as possible and the idea being she 'sucked' surrounding light into cohesive forms for her attacks. ...of course that was assuming coh was still around. sands of mu would have been great to represent the speedy attack aspect in hand to hand.
depending on how cot works she may morph to a speedster/blaster. just kinda depends on how things shake out.
