Its just my rendition of what we started calling Vanguard... but I think the name is now Anthem(>?<) from the Icon characters above. Hadn't seen any movement here on this thread in a while and someone commented on the version I did above over on the deviantart thread. Wasn't really impressed with her as an over all effort so thought I'd actually put some effort into this one.
Still not what I want quality wise but ... I'm still working on my skills. I'll get there eventually. :D

Oh! Ack! I didn't quote it. Was talking of some old guy in what looks like Lord Nemesis armor with a clear helmet.
Not sure who he is, there is a write up on all of them. But there is (IMHO) a nod or two there. But obviously for copyright reasons, none of the characters are related to or based on - anyone from COH. Nemesis was based on a couple of people - I believe that this guy may stem from similar origins??
You'd need to check with the Lore people on it.

Yeah, there should be a sticky somewhere linking to the names/info on each of the known iconic characters. Which ... I embarrassingly admit I'm not aware of the current names. Or the icons aside from the ones shown above.
Now that I've got Anthem/Vanguard/Woman with big sword and brass running bra out of my system I figured I'd move on to some others. Names - would be good. :) [Hints at anyone who might know them.]
Moving on to my next victim... errrr... attempt... who I'm just calling "Sorcery Dude" until I get a good name and story for him... (Another hint to the guys in Art/Lore about that FAQ/Info on the iconics -- who I know are reading this... unless of course you really want all us fanboys calling people things like "Sorcery Dude").
It'll be a few days before my hands heal up enough to do more than a rough sketch and I can keep a steady hand. (PSA: Kids, when your parents tell you "Don't do that or you'll break your hands and wind up with carpal tunnel syndrome!"... Listen up. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome... it's not as cool as it looks.)

I do understand the need to keep a lid on some of the lore aspects -- a game is being developed so there's a need to keep some of that under wraps. But a bit of a peek wouldn't hurt.
I must agree. Dr. Tyche gives me no visual, or gravitas to the character concept. Dr. Ohm on the other hand ,nails the character concept that I see.
Also, I think Paragon was changed to Anthem because the Iconic hero group has been named, The Paragons.
Or a simple..Tesla!

I'll rework it here in a few days. I cheated heavily with a lot of texture brushes to hide my bad art. I'll go back when I'm feeling better - blow it up to size and see if I can't clean it up and make it better.

Doctor Strange... combs his back. (If you haven't checked out "Strange" - they did move away from that a few times. Shame they canceled it I really liked that book.)
This... Magic Man guy... appeared to me to have the whole Sting spikey faux thing going on, which inspired me to maybe set it on fire look. When my hands get better in a week or two I'll go back and try it again.
But everyone should be kicking in with ideas and concepts. I loves it watching and seeing all the cool stuffs around here!
Friend, all I was saying that his hair is laughable and that his powers are obviously akin to the Doctor's. I liked Strange's look, he was cool. But this guy looks likea cheesy rip-off. I could have easily made a joke about most of our current line-up, and each would have a degree of truth. All I can say I that I hope the people making the npcs use these next two years wisely. They only have one shot.

Sorry for not replying in... forever. I've literally been doing 10-15 hr days for the last month here so -- really not able to check in. So -- if anyone was wondering - no, I haven't died or gone into hiding. Just... work, work, work, work... did I mention work??
Anyways... humorously enough, I get the NATO phonetic alphabet thing a lot. :)
Years ago when computers had these really odd boxes attached that allowed us to connect to each other at the blinding speeds of 300 bps (you did read that right) ... I needed a 'handle' for my, more extracurricular activities on the internet and Manfred Man's Earth Band was playing in the background a song called "Stranded In Iowa".
I sat there at this blinking cursor asking me for my handle and the words, "Mayday this is Echo Hotel... Hotel Echo This is Mike November I can feel your fear..." hit my ears and "Mike November" came out on the keyboard.
So... technically yes - it is connected. But it's actually from the song.
Okay... finally got some spare time to go back and look at a few of my sketches - started with a cleanup on Anthem (or whatever we are calling her)...

Hey I caught it ... and considering the fact that the next appearance of Wonder Woman will be in Batman vs. Superman (aka - "We'd call this the Justice League Movie but you'd only laugh at us again...") without her costume ... that's more than we'll see of her in that film.
Even though we'll get to see the Flash - who apparently WILL appear briefly in his costume, and Cyborg who will appear briefly in his costume, Arrow who we'll get to see.
Which - is what Warners have said. And that's really bizarre since Zack Snyder has been quoted talking about seeing her costume alongside the batman costume and the superman costume...
So I'm just calling it Justice League via Zack Snyder an going to wait for the DVD. I have too high an expectation that flick is going to follow in Man of Steel's footsteps and I can't watch that again.

The Eyes and jaw line were references from from Thandie Newton, the lips are from Hallie Berry, Nose ... is whatever fit between. :)
The charging forward body is from a reference frame found an Avengers with the Black Knight done by John Buscema.
Background is from a photo manip I did a couple years back to teach depth and color adjustments. Original photo is public domain and is of an alley in Florence Italy.

Hah! Great but a strange reference to work from. I'd love to hear the story behind that one.
I was looking for different faces to use as references and I'd just finished doing several emotion challenges - he's one of the few actors you can grab very clean images of every emotion from. We know him from comedy but he's done everything from serious drama to romantics to action / sci-fi and westerns and spy flicks where he's the bad guy.
He's awesome to use for facial expression studies. :)
I just got lazy and used his entire face.... but thought it looked kinda interesting so didn't bother changing it.
It works, and that's all that matters. :D
Well unlike you and most people here I am not an artist - wish I had that skill but without a reference I am lost. Its just not a skill I take to - have to have something to work from - a good example are the proportions on this.
Once I got into perspectives - everything is kinda out of wack. That right hand for example is huge - it's like the guy has hulk hands. The one left one being closer should be huge but - I completely misjudged the other.. and I never did get the chest right. I'll probably take another bash at it again now that I can see the mistakes a bit more clearly.
I use reference all the time. It keeps things from getting too wonky, but even then my hand and head don't always agree and I miss the mark. I think when an artist looks at a painting all we see is all the mistakes we have made. It's just a matter of trying to improve and going on to the next piece of art.

Well my problem (in RL) is that people see stuff I do an assume I have art skill - when in fact I have fairly mediocre to below average skills as an artist... and a vast wealth of skills in 'design' and photoshop.
An artist conceives things - sees them in their head and gathers reference and works from that. A design, is about attaining a goal - so it's relegated to a set of rules to govern it's final appearance. They seem connected - and your best designers are artists, but you don't have to be artistic really to be a designer.
I can look at an objective "do CoT Icons in xx format" and go find the formats, reference arts and then follow those directions. But if you asked me to draw one from scratch? Come up with a new idea for a character? Design a costume for someone else?
It's like asking me to make a four course meal for a French restaurant. Could I do? Sure... given enough time, effort and energy I can do that. I would not recommend you ever actually try consuming it. :)
The classics! Forbidden Planet... was awesome, will always be one of the best renditions of Shakespeares "The Tempest" ever made.
Even still ... just be glad I wasn't studying Manga expressions to copy this weekend... or it'd be all giant panda eyes and huge breasts for absolutely no reason...
Which reminds me... need to fix his chest - dump about half the muscles it's just too over the top there. I was trying to get away from Dr. Strange-esque looks and think I overshot by a lot.

im not sure which metals could represent the different colors, if you're going for a glossy/shiny feel.

Marvelous and Zbrush (which I have) would definitely speed it up but would defeat the purpose of doing it by hand. One of the things I hate about using 3D modeling software is what makes it so easy to use which is they remove any skill from the equation. Your adjusting settings and letting something else do the renders. Its a personal preference based on my need to improve my own skills.
I could also pretty easily just grab the pictorial elements, drag them into my Photoshop comp and use Puppet Warp to do it as well. :D. But I'm looking to improve my skill as an artist.

Got the costume as close as I could to the concept sketches, took a few liberties by adding a shield/winged belt and also carried it over into the sword and scabard.

speakin of canon characteers, sure would be nice to get a lil more info about them at some point, not to mention clearer shots of them. just being a lil antsy here for the game is all. still...seems this would be something one would want to have doe already given its part of the backdrop to the entire world. I assume they do but are just waiting for the right time to share with the masses. blah...I hate waiting.

The new image of Anthem has me REALLY pumped to see what the other characters look like when in actual concept art for the game stage!.. I mean she's just badass!

That is because Cajun Catfish is an awesome artist. She is the NPC Lead and is a great concept artist. Between Jordan doing the landscape and her NPCs the 2D team is in great hands. And the 3D team is also brilliant, Carlos, did the Phoenix Fountain and even looking at the mesh in Maya is beautiful. Everyone is working their day jobs but I can honestly say they are doing a great job artistically in developing the game. Also Pedalstorm is herding cats and keeping everything on track. Soon we will see the first results of their work. The Avatar App. Trust when I say they are busting their asses on this program.

I kinda like when feathers are layered in a way thats its like fish scales.
And if the gauntlet was living (even if its alien AI), when attacks are done, the scales can move a bit and glows come out more from the edges of the scaled feathers. :)
still not sure I am keen on anthem without her sword...my other 'concern' is making the head of the phoenix the hand....to easy for it to be mistaken for a crab claw.

I dunno, I get that we are trying for something different...but maybe if the head was on the shoulder...the wings spread down the chest and back...the arms could be the legs and hands be the talons. heck, could even make it a three fingered glove kinda thing.
...maybe I will fiddle around with anthem and see if I can get her to where I like her, as presented thus far by MWM. I'll post something up if I do find something that I find exciting.

I thought it was a claw! The other pic of her they have had me think there was a hand in there somewhere that this pic doesn't show.
yeah, its there...the hand is in the head...effectively it's a big metal mitten. the eye can be seen in the pic, that was done for Jay (which is by the by...very nice. :) ), there is not a lot of attention drawn to it...but its there.

quickie idea along the lines of what I was talking about earlier:

kinda borin...but it sets the tone and is pretty much instantly recognizable as a patriotic type hero....especially when colored. character design is a toughy but in my experience, the less the better and if ya want a character to 'last' they need an iconic look. this means clean simple designs that are instantly recognizable.
I am gonna erase the arm and try and get something a lil closer to the original though...see what I can do there that makes me somewhat happy.
....and for the record, I kinda liked the original Anthem when she came out, sword and all... :p

Still love the hair! :) Still think the fake arm would be best with a mix of the what we have so far and witchblade look (we had something similar in CoH).

No. I believe it was called "Metal" Something. Was a rather skimpy looking piece, but then Witchblade looks usually is, but that can be fixed while still maintaining a similar design.
aaahhh...gotcha. just hopped into Coh and took a look-see. hmmm...not sure that would work as is...but I do see what ya mean. I will see if I can put something more along those lines together that still fits what they (MWM) are aiming for.
...and the name of the piece you were looking at was indeed "metal."

Anthem doesn't have an arm. It seems obvious that the armor she wears has shape changing properties as American Star did not suffer the same issue ands wasn't the same size. Being a sword in hand, a claw, or even something else is not far fetched.
Love her design. Can't wait for more.

As someone who has gotten a commission from Eryck, I will say I like his work :) I still don't like the look of the arm/armor.
By the logic that it can be shapeshifted into anything, the same logic says it can be shapeshifted into something that does the same thing and still looks good :p

makes me wonder on how the arm works. does the wearer have the choice on it's appearance...what did it look like on the fella who originally had it?
(still fiddling around with something closer to witchbalde's style while combining with the current version....yeah...it's a real pain to get these two to play nice)
