"So, should MWM try a similar approach too for its Box cover?"
I would look at something along those lines. whether it is a single face or a team doesn't really matter. given the push for heroes and 'villains' I would actually suggest one of each...juxtaposed in some manner to show conflict. this though, would require them to start planning along these lines now and start setting things down in stone which they are hesitant to do at this time.

Perfection!
how so? I thought it was quite clear...these faces would not be the next phalanx or jla...but just faces for the game itself. the brand by which the game can be easily associated to. as such, I would be interested in your thoughts given your response.

I rather like the idea of having the face, or branding, incorporating both sides of the spectrum. I would probably focus on a small group for each side though given the limited space of traditional box art. plus, you don't want to over load the consumers with to much information that it all becomes lost amonst the clutter out there on the interwebs. offhand, I would focus in on three from each side.

the 'problem' with all this is the alignment system itself. given the drive by many folks for a grey world...effectively pushing for the more extreme version of the Iron Age of Comics to be depicted versus the Bronze Age (comics put out from the 70s to the mid 80s, which I am assuming is what most folks here read...leastwise I did). given this push, there is no "good" vs "bad" and more a world of varying greyscaled vigilantes. CoH, was predominately Bronze Aged until Praetoria and then they started delving into the Iron Age a good bit.

the point being, MWM needs to figure out the world they want to push...is it a world of superheroes and supervillains or is it a world of vigilantes across the spectrum. once this has been determined it will naturally lead to who you want to be the brand.

my personal thought is to actually to go with the extreme alignments for there lies in the best over all "conflict" and this very conflict is what will draw more consumers to making a purchase. if the goal is to push the greyscale vigilante side...so be it....but in either case, they do need to make up their mind and make the decision on the type of game they are producing so they can figure out what their brand is going to be.

My response was to this post:

Also remember that the Paragons are just the most known supergroup (so far). They are not planned to be anything like the Phalanx. Sure, they will give out missions from time to time but they won't be "mentors" or the JLA or anything. You are the star of Titan City, not the Paragons. They just have a historic tie with the city. So don't feel as if they are the ideal hero of City of Titans.
There has been talk of "box cover" heroes and such. I believe our business lead had a great idea that actually didn't even have a "hero" on the cover. Not sure if it was mentioned here, so I'd better not repeat it. In the end, however, I believe we will have many "faces of the game". Not just one or even one group of characters.

This tells me that the PR team (or whatever passes for a PR team) is considering looking for some way to emphasize through the game box cover art that the true "lead character" of the game is the player, not the Paragons. I am particularly intrigued by this:

This raises many possibilities that up to now have been overlooked. Of course it could fail spectacularly. Only time will tell. It intrigues me that they are looking for "outside the box" ideas to use for box cover art. I hope they come up with a powerful, iconic image that none of us has yet considered.

I'm always intrigued with people start thinking outside the box.

You have to think of it like making a cover for your own Comic book, Issue 1. What do you put on it?

You put Anthem on the cover up against OverBoard!
And she asks him, "Do you Bleed!?"
...
"YOU WILL!"

I find that idea terrible. Great artwork is what will make me pick up the box (or at least something that intrigues me) finding out by reading the box that I get to make my own hero is what will get me to buy it.

I saw the heroes on the CoH box. Finding out I could make my own hero is what got me to buy it.

you want something that makes

you want something that makes people go: "who the hell it that bad ass mambajamba!"
if you get this reaction, they will then inquire further into the product in question and assuming you are offering something they may be interested in...you made a sale.

when you start using "generic" heroes (complete with catchy slogan "you are the hero of this story!") or a blacked out hero in front of a buncha other colorized generic heros (with same said 'catchy" slogan) I believe you will be setting yourself up for failure as these two methods are incredibly boring and nothing jumps out to grab the casual consumer. not to mention, do you really want your brand to be generic hero, or worse yet...a blacked out one? ....

we are in an age that we need something with some "flash" to catch the eye of the consumer, specifically those pc/internet savy folks who may, or may not, be looking for a new MMO to play. there are hundreds of MMOs out there....the good thing is there are only a handful of superhero genre MMOs....as such I believe it would be a serious pr/marketing mistake to use anything other than some kind of flagship hero/heroes....especially given this is a freshman outing of an adhoc internet volunteer company.

best not to get cute but go with that which is proven to work....especially when your betting on the initial financial viability of your company.

Who said anything about

Who said anything about generic heroes or blacked out silhouettes? ;) I can say that these were not the idea I kinda liked.
The decision is not made at this early date, of course, so there is plenty of time for the best piece of art to show up if it is needed.

I think because CoT is

I think because CoT is community built, so many here on the forum at this early stage feel entitled to make the changes we want in the game.

I personally think that time has passed. Pre-development is for the most part done. Its execution time and if you're trying to change plans in execution you end up with a Horse by Committee

wow...we can't even talk about things without suddenly being labeled "entitled."

given the responces from above regarding what they intend to use (which hasn't been determined as of yet as far as I can tell)...I don't think were as far along as you may believe. if they were..I am thinking we would see at the very least the the official brand by this point...but they are still working on even that at this time.

...also, until things are actually presented..nothing is set in stone and again...if we cannot talk about things here in the attempts to present more options/suggestions...then when can we?

so please, spare me the backhanded slaps. if ya don't like what's presented in the conversations, please feel free to refute or offer counter proposals, in fact I encourage such debate! just don't throw out veiled slaps, it just makes ya look petty (imo).

Agreed! Since Jay has been all Pro Anthem on everything no matter the change...always perfect...likely why the backhanded slap.

It's not like Jay hasn't suggested things. :p

Honestly it is waaaay too

Honestly it is waaaay too early to start designing boxes or even making a final choice on who or what the most marketable thing for the "face of the game" is. Are we discussing things constantly? Of course. Is there ideas? Sure. However there is no way we can say "Yeah....Anthem is our go-to" or "The Beard! It must be the Beard!!". Cajun's artwork has excited us as it has you guys. We hope to do that with every reveal up until you can actually go find cool things in-game (and after and during for that matter). When we get to that point you guys will be first to know. Well...second to us, but...awww you know what I mean.

I was specifically responding

I was specifically responding to the silohette idea when posting but it is much broader. Not just character designs, not just combat ideas, the entire game has had pre-production and things are now part of a greater ecosystem. The symbolism of the Vambrance* is reflected in the design of the main statue of Titan City. Changing one may change the other and many other things.

I played the Champions PnP game for a long time and when Champions Online came out with their interpretations of the characters I didn't see tons of feedback about how Defender or Ironclad or Witchcraft looked. I have to assume the reason why is because they didn't share the WIP with the playerbase and expected people to be excited about their work.

I take these early critiques as fan-boredom honestly. Whenever an artist is working is simply not the time to critique the artist, nor their creative process in my opinion. When the work is completed, if there is true criticism, that is the time for subjective critique.

...I completely disagree with this statement. call me crazy....buuut....as a semi-artist, I would rather get my critiques while I am working on the piece to ensure that what I am working on is in line with the thoughts of the person I am working with. can this always be achieved? no...but it is better to receive the critique while still in "preproduction" versus waiting till everything is locked down...then receiving the critiques.

if you wait to receive the critiques...you have exactly two options...
1. change nothing and tell the people this is how it is and nothing is changing.
2. go back to the drawing board and start the process all over.

both are not options I would want to go through...
with 1. you get all the negative vibe for not being willing to adjust the picture in question. this kind of inflexibility is bad juju imo.
with 2. you have to return to the drawing board and start all over...effectively scraping all the finished work you just did for nothing.

when pics are still in their "line" forms they are relatively easily to adjust. just look at the work I myself did in this thread alone. I posted some ideas...people critiqued...I adjusted as much as my skills would allow for. but if I had gone the whole way the first time...completed coloring, shading, etc...I highly doubt that I would have gone back and redid them after a critique was received.

now...applying all of this to something on the scale of a business? yeah...I definitely want the critiques prior to setting anything in stone.

I dunno...perhaps I am the odd man out amongst folks that draw...but I doubt it.

allll that being said, it is indeed MWMs sandbox and I am just waiting to play in it. what I say and do are all in the efforts to make the game as successful as humanly possible. they have every right to tell me "suck it up buttercup! this is the route we are going." I am ok with this...but this also doesn't mean I have to like it, nor do I have to stand by like idle sheep if I see/perceive something that doesn't agree with me. hence these very forums...a place where we can provide constructive feedback. :)

fireheart drop a linky/pic and I will see what I can do.

When artists give sketches to those who commission them, critiques start happening. "Can you do this, or do this." why some artists really don't like/won't give a look at progress.

Also, CoT is fan backed and has potential players worried that the game will suck for them. In fact, I think everyone should be worried it might at this point.

And yes, some of it is fan-boredom, but then, as a fan of Spider-Woman I can say, I hate her new outfit. It's what fans do, but that just means we have some fans of CoT who aren't just "Yes. All you do is great!" like some of them are.

I think the devs are taking

I think the devs are taking quite a lot of time doing internal critiques. They've stated as much. But you do not need to "start all over" unless a design is truly not functioning to specification and expectation.

The issue is that we fans who do not know the narrative do not have the beginnings to understand the specification and are working off of constantly varying degrees of expectation. Neither are solid enough to build from.

So, just to be clear, you think that we should all be worried that the game might suck at this point? What's that about?

If you're just stating that it's within the realm of possibility, then that's simply stating the obvious. Of course it's not impossible. But I'm really not worried at this point. I'm pretty excited.

If you're saying we should all be worried because you think that's the way things are heading right now, then, though I know some agree with you, I have to just simply say I disagree, and so do many others.

Isn't it possible that, rather than just being mindless "yes men", many of us actually like what we've seen and heard so far, even if you don't?

I mean, honestly, it's fine if you're worried, and it's even possible that you're right. But all of that was very dismissive, if not outright condescending, towards anyone who likes what MWM is doing.

Yeah....I think we need to be careful with that. Generalizing multiple perspectives of an issue as 2 separate perspectives leads to an potentially toxic divide that leaves no one satisfied in the end.

In the case of this I think we should give our suggestions now but make true judgements when the rough sketch of box art is shown to us. Right now these are just simply suggestions, they shouldn't be something to argue about.

All we've seen is part of a city. The rest has just been talk and people are acting like everything will be great and if anyone doesn't agree with it, they're just being negative because they're bored and waiting :p

Millions of people play WoW and think it's fun, but listening to people here, they're just wrong :p

We've also gone off the original schedule which was mentioned after the KS finished, and they went "We're off schedule, but it's because of big secret that we knew of before the KS!" :p

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, UE4 may be better, but still it gives a bit of worry.

It's just as easy to argue that MWM getting in on UE4 so early was a great move on their part and well worth it, and that it's impressive how far along they are after having had to mostly start over.

You're kind of doing the same thing you're accusing people of. You feel you're dismissed as "just being negative", so you're dismissing those who like what's happening as just "acting like everything will be great".

I don't think either are true.

You're not just negative, you have valid concerns. But those who don't share those concerns aren't just acting like everything will be great, they have valid reasons for thinking everything will be great.

I do think you have very specific personal preferences for the game, and you sometimes sound like you think people who don't share the same views are "just big dummies" :P.

I totally have personal preferences for the game. But I went in knowing those where never going to be met. I could tell that just by their starting line up of the hero team that doesn't seem to be the hero team they'll use as flagships. :p

I do have hopes they'll be close to how CoH did powers, where some people complained they didn't get enough powers early on and had to wait for recharges. I liked that! I liked trying to build to stop that! I think CoT will be a game where we have multiple attacks and defenses, with toggles and not a reliance on just two attacks.

I'm totally with you on the powers, I built the same way, and I hope we get a look/lore that you like :).

I think we will definitely get CoH 2.0 in the game mechanics department, and I'm excited about that too!

...but there is a whole lotta talk about "art" and sometimes that is just as important, if not more so on occasions, as the "art" itself.

I'm sure there's those involved in the actual making of the game going "I think this and that is a mistake" as well. But as we wait, I just get to be vocal about something. :p

After all, really we're all just waiting for some more details.

It's a neat thing when the art for a post-CoH product makes people say, "Wow! That's really cool! Man, I wish I could play that again. When is the new one coming out?" or "Reading your book made me want to play again." If the artwork moves forward like it seems to be, that will help remind the "old fans" of CoH and bring new interest to the game when it arrives.

From my perspective, the role of the community is to serve as a compass, sounding board, idea hamster farm, sense of the playerbase, and creative dialogue engine. We don't have to agree on everything--and shouldn't--but a feedback-rich environment is probably helpful to the MWM team.

A Wing and a Prayer, A Strong, Strong Wind, All Forests are One - Venture City metahuman novels in the spirit of City of Heroes and other comic book superhero fiction. (http://bit.ly/sdpbooks)

agreed...but it's hard to be the Idea Hamster Farm when very little information is provided and then what was provided is suddenly up in the air if it will be used at all.

it is the last bit which made me stop working on the previously featured characters....suddenly felt like a waste of time. why invest energy in getting attached when it's all in a state of flux? makes me sad as it effectively removed a thread of attachment I had for the game. :/

You know I really wanted to put tattoos on Cav's arm in game, but seeing Alex make Cav have arm hair I'm thinking I like the idea of Cavalier being a big burly dude.

Also, that is awesome, thanks for getting the commission and thanks Alex to for once again knocking it out of the park on our toons.

yeah I forgot to check with you, I put the tattoo for the group pic, but the ref I got, your arms were hairy, so I went with that, but I'm glad that you are happy with it.

At some point when I wasn't paying attention, Icon got a Mac launcher. (I suppose I could have mirror-flipped this in post to get the gauntlet on the correct arm.)

How the Staff Made the

How the Staff Made the Paragons may have names for these people. In which case, we can assign some names to some of the images.

Anthem is obvious, yes. Overclock would be the robot. The dark haired person in back might be Arrow Shade. But I can't have any confidence in assigning other names from this article to that picture. Especially with the guy in the middle front being called Rottweiler by Tiger (although he wasn't a dev then).

Other lore updates don't seem to shed much light on the question. Also, note that Anthem and Overclock (if that is the robot) have updated designs.

This image may be very early concept art, and some of the characters may have evolved beyond recognition.
