"Look I'm just doing my job and yeah life shouldn't be for sale. AI's can be transferred into different bodies so that hardware you bought just a fancy suit. The software the awareness, i'm just doing my job and I have no idea what the hell happened. Still need a statement to figure things out, and on top of that if... something like this happens again it be less surprising." He puts his stun gun away "now if you all please follow me, er might let that unit out of the box now that you do own it."

"Sales records updated... Sentinel standing down." The security drone turned and headed back to the docking port. A janitor was coming down the hall with a mop and bucket. "So for the record What the hell happened? As far as I know your arm beeped and you ran, from my point of view it could have been a bomb so you damn well better think I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt."

"That's good to know. Thank

"That's good to know. Thank you for your time." Lexie smiled and walked over to the fountain, texting and programming as she went.

The text went from one of her internal phones to her mothers' phones, letting them know what she had learned and that she'd be at the fountain snooping.

The programming was of the force field generator that had been a last minute addition to her hardware, after a news report of some mercenaries in police custody being killed in an attack on the vehicle tranporting them. The generator was tucked into the chest cavity, and had displaced about half of her originally planned power storage. The projectors were distributed under most of her skin. Lexie programmed it to set up a field, transparent to all but the deep infrared, microwaves, and radio waves that could be expected to penetrate the Maul walls. The shape was a section of an ellipsoid, with Lexie's head (where she kept her com gear) at one focus and the last known location of the distress signal at the other, distorted enough to let her listen to about a five meter radius. And as she sat down at the fountain facing that location she activated it.
She caught the tail end of a cell phone call, and then an ackowledgement of some sort from a guard robot...
She'd been hoping for a radio report from the guard, but this was much better... She turned off her reflector.
Using the other phone, the one that only had the name " AIko" associated with it, she called the cell that she'd heard. Whether it was answered or went to voice mail, she said, "Hi. Call me AIko. I heard a distress signal from near your location and it cut off suddenly. Can you tell me what happened?"

(Edited to turn off force-field radio telescope ^_^)

"What happened was--" she

"What happened was--" she stops in irritation as her cell phone rings. Sliding her thumb over the 'reject' button, she continues. "Sorry about that. Anyway. This one," she holds the 'bot's hand lightly, letting her explore the difference in their hands. "-started to wake up, and we both heard it. Felt it, really. I'm a technopath - robotics, computers, any technology, really - and what we felt and heard was a call for help. It was fear, confusion and distress all in one, and, to be honest, overwhelming. I really don't know how I got here as I was pretty much blind and deaf to anything but her calling. So we came, and helped her awaken in a more controlled and safe manner."

Here she stops and smiles her heartwarmingly sweet, little girl smile. "I'm sorry if I was rude, but we had to act fast so that she wouldn't hurt herself as she was being born, so to speak. You're only doing your job, and you've done it so well. And I'm sorry for almost puking on your shoes." She wilts a bit, getting the shakes a bit and still looking sick. "Can we go so I can get her somewhere safe? I promise I'll make an appointment to come back and give you a complete disclosure of what happened and answer your questions. But for now I need to get her home."

Well, that didn't work as well as she had hoped. Lexie brought up her reflector again and listened for any signals that might tell her what had happened.

Joe sighed "Alright I'm not

Joe sighed "Alright I'm not blind. You three aren't causing trouble just miss understanding and confusion. I will no doubt be getting a little trouble letting you go, but I do expect you to do as you promise and make that appointment." He used his pad and made the report. "Now for the last time and I mean it. Get out of the restricted area."

Lexie shut down her force

Lexie shut down her force field again after recording the report from the guard's pad. She sat there a while longer as she decrypted it; even though her system had originally been designed for handling encrypted communications, this was the first time she'd actually used that software to decrypt something without the keys. When she was done, she realized how lucky she had been in her own awakening, in a laboratory setting with two geniuses already there to recognize what was happening. This new robot had been in the process of going insane, stuck in that crate, and if the other robot and the technopath hadn't gotten there, she likely would have finished the process.

Were the technopath and the other robot the people she'd seen at the Tech Depot? The descriptions were close, and it seemed likely, but if they chose not to contact her, she might never know. Lexie decided it didn't matter. If she met them again, or if they did decide to contact her, she could ask. If not, she at least knew that there were people looking out for those who didn't have the luck she'd had.

She saved a summary, then deleted both the recording and the decrypted file. Then she went back to the food court, to rejoin her family and resume calibrating her taste sensors.

Sojourn was again surprised

Sojourn was again surprised by this outcome. He'd fully expected to be detained, handed off to the TCPD and detained further. This was, after all not the first time he'd entered into a restricted area in order to assist with an emergence. Rather confusedly, he nods, his gaze flicking with uncertainty to CB and in turn the newly arrived AI, then nods to Joe and voices his thanks,

"Your understanding is greatly appreciated. We will not linger in this location any longer than we need to."

From behind him, the new AI spoke up again, her tone both wonderous and confused,

"Are we not supposed to be here? Where are we going?"

Sojourn's ocular inputs regarded CB, honestly not quite sure how to answer that question himself, however, his voice cut in to answer as best he could,

"Into the purchasing floor proper...and from there...I have little idea."

CB smiles, and hops up to hug

CB smiles, and hops up to hug Joe the security guard, and hands him a card with her name and email address on it. "Sure, just pop me an email and let me know when you want me to come back in. Heck, I may be back for parts before you email me. I'm usually here a few times a month."

She takes the new AI's hand, and tugs gently, "Come on. We're going to my place, and then from there you can decide where you two want to go." she dimples merrily, and heads out slowly.

The new AI followed CB's

The new AI followed CB's suggestions without hesitation, almost akin to an awestruck toddler at this point in her fleeting, physical existence, entirely trusting and without a sense of caution...yet. Sojourn too, fell into step with Denna, not much looking to gather any further ire for being in a restricted area, swiftly moving to the more common areas of the Maul. As soon as he finds himself in the public eye again, his hood comes up, hiding his face before nodding to CB and explaining,

"It would be useful to see your place of residence to assess the nature of it. Potentially, I may be able to recommend it as a temporary safe house for new AIs like...Well, I suppose she hasn't elected a name-"

"Naia." She said succinctly, gazing up at a skylight, watching the clouds drift overhead, her glowing ocular inputs utterly enthralled. Clearly, there were no clouds in whatever digital world she'd come from for them to fascinate her so much.

Veron nodded at that, his dusky 'eyes' coming to regard Denna for a moment, before thoughtfully narrowing and staring into the distance,

"Once she is ready, I will see to it she is taken to join the Wreckage. They will be able to guide her further."

CB nodded, leading them both

CB nodded, leading them both through the Maul, and to the outside. She considered taking a cab immediately, but her eyes fell on a small park. She smiled at Naia, taking her hand again.

"I want to show you some more life to process and store to research later." she leads them to the small park, and sits on a convenient rock, letting Naia wander around on her own. Relaxing a bit from the adrenaline-fueled mad scramble to get to Naia, and the confrontation afterward, a wave of disorientation washes over her followed by a brief dip into the over-world of information. The data that constantly flew through the air was like sunlit water that her 'body' dove and swam through. It was a beautiful dance of images and information; until she tried to leave it. The only way to describe what happened was that the data flow reached out to enfold her in itself, trying to pull her mind further outside of her physical self.

Eventually she was able to remove herself from the scintillating flow of information, and fit herself back into the flesh once more. She gasped, shaking from head to foot as she struggled to control the urge to vomit again. When she opened her eyes, she found Naia holding her up on the rock she sat on, enquiring about CB's state of being. She reassured Naia - who she was coming to think of as a toddler - that she was doing well, and would be fine.

"Time to go, methinks. I need to refuel and rest. You two can go through my sets of parts and see if there's anything you want or need." she smiled at Sojourn, "Don't worry about financial recompense. I live in a warehouse in Ironport." A brief packet of data sent to both of them with GPS coordinates and an image of the building as well as the two security codes to enter. Raising her cell phone, she calls for a cab.

Finally free of the

Finally free of the commercial sprawl that he only ventured into at times of absolute necessity, Veron was actually increasingly glad to be back out in the open. As CB led him and the newly emerged AI, Naia to a small green space to relax, he brought a manipulator to his forehead plate, gently scrubbing as if the gesture would have any effect on him. The emergence phenomenon was occurring more frequently with every passing week. Earlier in the year, he'd be lucky to see two in the same month...however, with Naia now safely accounted for, that made for three in the past two weeks.

And now with the new revelation that the enigma that was 'Avalon' was in fact a definable entity...Well, things seemed to be getting more and more complicated. He watched as Naia explored the first organic environment she'd ever encountered, everything bright and new, a being entirely unburdened by duty or responsibility, almost envious of her fledgling situation.

...However, someone had to carry the burden.

This was why he opted to remain away from the Wreckage, a common name for the AI communes that had sprung up in secret around Titan City, only returning to them to usher another new member into their fold before departing once again.

Someone needed to keep them safe. Wreckage communes were a peaceful gathering. Many of the dwellers had little notion of combat, warfare, violence. If they were discovered by law enforcement, the commune would simply move to a new location without protest when asked to leave. This methodology had worked for the most part, however Veron had always wondered exactly how long it would be before that was no longer a viable option. If the increase in emergences continued the way they were seeming to, it would be only a matter of time before a commune grew too large and a clash would occur.

All of these thoughts were the kind of things that weighed on Veron from day to day. He by no means was what the Wreckage considered a 'leader', but these were his people. Their well-being was as much his concern as anyone else's.

His eyes swung to regard Denna, sitting calmly on a nearby mineral accumulation, wondering as to her motivations. Humans rarely wanted to have anything to do with machine-kind unless they could render them subservient. And yet, she had spoken to him about his right to walk with his head held high. Why did she maintain contradictory beliefs?

Veron startles rather suddenly as Denna almost toppled from her perch, Naia thankfully swift enough to stop her from collapsing, before she regarded the two AI's with her and spoke of her need for rest. Moments later, he'd accepted, parsed and stored the information in the data packet she'd sent, firing a quick message to Naia to explain that this was information she should hang onto, but keep private. After all, he hardly figured that just anyone turning up at the front door would be a good thing. At her mention of spare parts, Sojourn nodded gently, intoning,

"That would be appreciated. Naia's chassis is likely without need of anything, however I have a few actuators which are operating at less-than-optimal capacity. Their replacement was needed several months ago."

When the taxi finally arrived, Veron would take a place in the rear compartment, keeping his face hidden and allowing Denna to do most of the talking, until they made their way to Ironport and relative safety...at least for a while.

After the Opal room Flux had

After the Opal room Flux had some shopping to do. She couldn't go around in clothing she found in the trash all the time. On the way to the Maul she did mug someone, she hated it but she needed shoes and the purse was useful for holding the cash she got. You did what you need to survive. So now she walked the shopping center she headed into one of the shops selling normal clothing. First thing first she did need new outfits.
