Gilithia (open rp) Fantasy based from orc/goblin side

Gilithia, a continent as old as ever, was the home of Baruk , an orc whose tribe was situatued in the colder northern forests of the land. The humans called the place Deep wood , after the large central lake that seemed to be deeper than most. Two main roads crossed through the wood, one running east to west, and the other Nprth to south. Right in the center of the wood lay a small town on the borders of the lake. The East-west road passed along the lakes southern shore , and the north-south road skirted its eastern one. The town went by many names depending on who was speaking of it, but it was inhabited by humans who made a living fishing and providing a layover to travelers of the road. They called it Imet, shortened from an old dwarven word meaning the town on the lake. The humans and dwarves and even the odd wood elf traveled this road and openly defied the orcs living in the forrest. They send hunting parties out and kill or capture any they find.
Baruk's tribe had been thinned considerably and he was one of the few remaining soldiers who could still hunt and provide for them. He had joined his tribe with a small troupe of giblins who had no leader when thier cheif was killed in a hunt by the elves. He also managed to recruit a few Gnolls who he had freed himself as they were being carted away by the humans.
Baruk didnt lead his tribe, that was done by Gor, an older, massive orc, blind in one eye , and as Baruk would say , as dumb as the dirt itself. Baruk knew Gor made bad descisions and he felt his size and strength alone made him worthy of leadership. Gor still warred with other orc tribes, and the lesser races, as he called them. Baruk saw the benefit of working with the others and if it wasnt for him the gnolls and goblins they included in thier group would have been slaughtered, enslaved, or even eaten. He knew his day would come, and Gor's time would run out. Baruks would have killed him himself if it werent for the other orcs that backed Gor's thinking. Killing him now might all but destroy the tribe. He would wait......

But none of that was in his mind now, He was at the edge of the northern road , silenlty perched in a tree with some allies with him. The wagon that approached had only two guards, the remnants and survivers of another tribes ambush. The other tribe had lost too many, but thinned the protection of the wagon approaching. He smiled to himself, He loved the hunt and the pillaging. Baruk would have a good day .

Across the road, in another tree, Kevahl let the sightpost of his arbalest track the neck of the guard on his side, listening for Baruk's signal...

The goblin lay along a thick branch, strips of cloth in various shades of green and brown breaking up the outlines of both his body and his weapons. The arbalest had been used by dwarf who had moved too close to Kevahl's tree a few days earlier, and didn't survive two short swords being driven into his shoulders as the goblin dropped onto him. Afterwards, Kevahl had claimed the arbalest and its heavy bolts as his share. It took him almost five minutes to winch back the cable, but once it was cocked he could put the bolt through a sparrow. At least they thought it was a sparrow, it wasn't that much bigger than the bolt so there wasn't much left of it...

Grib looked up at his fellow Goblin Kevahl and that Arbalest. What a find that weapon was perhaps if Kevahl dies he could grab it for himself, for now he had just his sword. Well it wasn't quite a sword a one handed saber spots of rust forming. Grib wasn't that skilled at weapon tending he use what he can. The sound of the wheels getting closer drew his attention away from that Arbalest. He was down in a ditch covered with mud and other debris as well as he could he had shimmied under a bush to further hide from the travelers on the road. Sure he wouldn't be able to move fast at first, but he was counting on the Orc and Kevahl to cause enough distraction to get out from under the shrub.

Curses now he had an itch on his nose. He tried to ignore it moving now would be a sure way to die.

Stumbling along behind the

Stumbling along behind the wagon, tied to it by a thick rope, was a half-orc in a ragged loin-cloth and roughly crafted leather boots. The big humanoid resembled a short orc with musculature that, while still powerful, was more streamlined and skin that was a lighter shade of green. His tusks were about half the size of an orc's and the dark hair on his head was not as greasy or coarse as an orc's. His eyes also looked more human and were not the typically reddish shade of most orc's. This half-orc's eyes were actually blue, a trait he'd inherited from his mother, Julia.

His name was Grozz and he'd been captured while hunting for Baruk's tribe a few weeks back. Grozz tended to wander far afield during his hunts and had been ambushed by the guards of this caravan while he was cleaning one of his kills. He'd slaughtered three of them before the rest took him down, so now they were taking him back to Imet to be tried for murder and other unspecified 'crimes against humans'. The simple fact of the matter was that the humans of Imet didn't like looking at half-breeds like Grozz and the sergeant that led this guard contingent was hoping to score some points with his commander by dragging this 'monster' to the execution block.

Inside the wagon were Grozz's twin falcata's and tribal leathers, both of which had belonged to his father Gruug. His father had been slaughtered seven years before by some of the other orcs for not sharing his woman, a human by the name of Julia. Grozz had been twelve at the time and had been plotting his vengeance ever since.

As Grozz raised his head, he recognized the area and realized that they were near his tribe's encampment. Waiting for both of the guard's to walk forwards of the wagon, he whistled a few bars as a signal and hoped that his tribe was out there, planning on ambushing this pitiful caravan. The whistle earned him a crack across the shoulders from a guard's whip as the human stopped and waited for the wagon to pass. "Shut it, yeh monster!"

As the gaurd raised his arm

As the gaurd raised his arm to lash at the half orc again, Baruk cried out....The gaurd turned to see Baruk launching an axe his direction. End over end the weapon carried and found its mark. It stuck in the wagons frame after it had done its job...The arm grasping the whip was severed at the elbow.....The gaurd frantically grasping at the wound with his other appendage. Baruk was out of the tree and charging ready to hurl a spear at the second guard. "Kill the driver" he barked in a guttural tongue.

The guard screamed and desperately began trying to stem the flow of blood from his arm, so he didn't even notice as Grozz stepped behind him. He reached up and grasped the guard's head, then snapped his neck. As the body fell, Grozz snatched the dagger off the back of his belt and cut the ropes binding his hands.

At that moment, Grozz heard Baruk's cry. As the wagon driver whipped the horses to move faster, he ran ahead and snatched the axe out of the sideboard. He had a chance and swung mightily at the spoke, burying the axe halfway into it. But then it was jerked out of his hand as Grozz registered motion out of the corner of his eye. He ducked at the last second as the other guard swung a short sword at his neck. Diving forward, he snagged the back of the wagon with one hand and held on as it dragged him away from the other guard, who yelled and gave chase.

Kevahl had already loosed his bolt at the second guard, striking him in the right shoulder as he had turned, his sword arm was seriously hampered.

The arbalest dropped to the end of the cord that secured it to the branch as Kevahl rose and ran along it. He timed his leap, and as he dropped onto the driver he drew his short swords...

As the chaos insued, the driver was taken by surprise at the creature that landed on him. He tried to shirk and get the newcomer to fall off, but he had been injured in the previous ambush and all but collapsed as the shorts blades faound thier marks easily.
With grozz hanging on to the wagon , the guard with the now useless sword arm stumbled in a last ditch effort to do soemthing, anything. He went to hurl another dagger he had at the half-orc only to be impaled by the thrown spear from Baruk....its jagged head stuck clean through the hapless guard and its momentum carried him forward where he fell in a pool of his own dark blood.

As grozz hung tight he realized there was another figure in the wagon. She had screamed when the wheel , with the spoke weakened by the mighty axe blow shattered and the wagon started to drag..
She was hiding, trying to remain silent and still , but now she was up and trying to get the Half-orc off the back of the wagon. Her weapon of choice was a frying pan she swung widly, not being able to aim with the jolting of the broken wheel and the shuttering of the whole wagon itself.

Grozz howled as one of her wild swings finally connected and the rim of the frying pan came down on his knuckles. His hand spasmed open, more from shock than actual damage. Fortunately, his other hand had already been coming up and he grabbed the back of the wagon with it. Getting his feet under him, he began sliding along behind the wagon. He got his other hand onto the rim of the wagon and pulled himself into the bed of the wagon. Turning on the panicking woman, he loosed a full-throated basso roar directly into her face.

The woman had fallen back as Grozz climbed in the back of the now out of control wagon. It was slowing down , having to drag one of its rear wheels, or what was left of it, but it was still moving forward. The driver was slumped over and Baruk was gaining on the slowing and broken wagon. As she tried to stand again, Grozz roared and she fell back and cowered . SHe covered her head with her arms and cried uncontrollably assuming her fate. Grozz would see besides the woman , another body wrapped in cloth, and 3 crates in there as well.

Kevahl left his swords in their grisly sheath. He grabbed the reins in one hand as he held onto the back of the driver's bench with the other. He hauled back on the reins, hoping that would signal the beasts to stop. Assuming the half-orc's shout hadn't panicked them...

Okay now he better move or he be out of the rewards. Grib rose up and charged jumping and grabbing onto the wagon as it went by. Clinging on with one hand he used his left to hold his sword "We should kill horses! That make them stop running!"

Grozz rolled his eyes. Grib

Grozz rolled his eyes. Grib had never been a particularly bright example of goblinhood. Squatting a bit to lower his center of balance, he then moved forward and reached over Kelvahr to grab the reins with both hands. "I got it!" he hollered, hauling back on the reins until they went taut.

Twirling the large ring that

Twirling the large ring that went through his nose the wizened Gnoll watched the goblins attacking. Gor had most of the Gnolls closer to camp. Something about the prestige of another race as bodyguards. Of course the Orc warlord wouldn't use a word like prestige. It was something more like "gnolls fight good, look scary, make gor look even stronger." Rock for brains.

His few remaining companions called him 'Book' his real name lost to tradition when he killed the previous shaman in a duel. Only the strong could wield clan magic. If killed, you were not strong. Book was strong. Strong in magic, and despite his age, still could snap even a goblins arm in his jaws. Gor was rock for brains, but knew better than to tell Book where to go. The other gnolls would not stand for it. Shamans were rare among his people, and he had defended his position a dozen times against every adept who had returned.

His group had not been captured until he had run out of stamina. The humans had mages, far more than his people. His people bred fast, but most were not in tune with nature enough to wield it. After their capture they were sent, their entire clan into an arena to face three minotaurs. Book grimaced as he rotated the bull ring again in his nose. They had won that fight, at great cost. His own grandsons dying to the rings former owner. This goblin band had freed what was left of his tribe as they were being carted to another city for more 'games'.

Book sat on the hill. He would patch up the survivors. He had no real need for spoils. Most the Goblins would give him the ingredients he needed for his magic, and if they wouldn't, he could always kill them and take it. It was the rule of strength after all.

Kevahl released the reins.

Kevahl released the reins. "Hey, Grozz. Welcome back." He drew his blades and wiped them on the tunic of their temporary sheath before putting them back in the sheathes on his back where they belonged. Then he dodged around Grozz, ran the length of the wagon, jumped off and sprinted back to his tree. He climbed up to the branch and walked out to retrieve his arbalest.

The Arbalest! He could have

The Arbalest! He could have grabbed it when Kevahl was on the wagon. Well then he would have to fight Kevahl for it and thought Grib wasn't a bright bulb he wasn't one of the dumbest goblins either, he lose. Hopping off the wagon as well he looked around "So what we get besides Grozz? We take horses back and could have big feast."

Grib was thinking of how unfair this outside world was, then again life in the black mountains wasn't to grand either at least he knew what to expect there. He was part of a group that went out of the caves to get wood and any game, resources they could find. The group was also the ones that was least value to the clan. It was a good system really when things got tough and supplies low you send out the raiding parties out of the caves to get more. If they don't return, well that less mouths to feed, if they do there be something to eat, if they bring something home they proved they were of value. Even if they return empty handed the price of failure was not pleasant, on top of that why waste the meat. All in all it was a good system, of course Grib was one of the least valued members of the clan. They had the bad luck of running into a group of noble born hunters, and their guards, and their well practiced, well maintained weapons. Grib was one of three that survived the initial fighting and was captured. A live trophy for the humans. Being one of the smallest of the three he wiggled his arms free of the bindings and slipped away one of the nights as they returned to the human city. Lost scared and well Lost, somehow he stumbled upon the Orc camp. He wanted to be of value to the camp he really didn't want to find out what happens to the unvaluable among Orcs and other higher classed Monsters.

"Big feast to celebrate Grozz return be very good. Yeah let take Horses!"

Baruk approached the now

Baruk approached the now stopped wagon. Grozz had stopped it easily and prevented it from crashing into the treeline. As he approached he retreived his spear , and his axe. He carried three weapons, a smaller axe he liked to throw, his spear, and a sword. The sword he took from a human he slaughtered. It was average size and very plain looking. He liked it because its balance superb he thought. He could even throw it effectively. As he searched the gaurd with the broken neck he found its coin purse. Smiling he yelled out "Grozz!!"....and tossed the purse towrds his now freed companion."Your kill, your prize". When he came to the second body, the one he retreived his spear from , he took that purse for himself. "Grib!" he called out... "Better weapons for you" he motioned to the guards sword and daggers." He then pulled off the guards remaining forearm bracer. He romoved the old hide one he wore and replaced it with the steel and mail one he took.
Baruk was intelligent for an orc. The party he brought out to the roads were asked to come because he knew thier value. Kevahl was superb with the captured dwarven weapon.
Grib was a small and sneaky and could go places others couldnt. And book was valued for his healing and casting abilities. And now to have Grozz back in thier midst..Baruk was happy, well, as happy as an orc could be or show. Baruk Knew this odd matched group could do things he struggled to do with other orcs that were too headstrong or even stupid to see the value of a pack or tribe mentality.
" Eat the horses?"...Baruk said. "Worth more coin then food". "Besides, we have our prize".....he motioned to the scared and cowering woman in the back.

All members of the group

All members of the group suddenly felt an unsettling feeling within them, as if something tremendously evil has placed it's gaze upon them. They could feel the dark presence within their very souls. Soon they would notice a figure moving within the forest, which only progressively became darker as the figure drew closer. Once the dark entity had reached the edge of the forest, nothing but darkness could be seen within it and only the road and a line of trees on each side of it could be seen. The figure was dressed in dark gray, long-sleeved robes accompanied by a hood, successfully hiding any indication to the person's race, but one could tell it was approximately 5'8 feet tall.

The hidden figure raised it's hands in the general direction of the wagon and Baruk's group and soon they would feel the unsettling presence within their souls fade and the darkness which had overtaken the forest vanish. The figure lowered it's hands and remained standing on the edge of the forest, observantly staring at each member of the group before speaking out. It's voice was a male's and dead, as no expression could be heard in it. "I have been looking for you..."

Standard humans, nothing

Standard humans, nothing overly special about them. Died because they were weak. Didn't have their suits of metal, probably lower in their tribe. the ones in metal suits or their mages were the ones to watch out for. Much like Orcs and Goblins, the more things a Human had the more dangerous it usually was. unless those things were gems. For some reason humans with many gems were often as weak as children.

Book loped down the hill. the goblins would squabble over anything not directly claimed through kill rights, as was natural. The most suited would win and best use whatever was argued over.

Book had spent many years traveling the land. He was not actually literate, he had never met a Gnoll who had use of human writing. He did know that his name came from what human mages carried and the irony was not lost on him. He smiled as he heard the 'plan' of what to do with the loot. Younglings, they didn't understand humans at all.

Speaking in undercommon so the surviving humans wouldn't panic more than they already were. No Gnoll female would be begging and sobbing, it was pathetic. Book spoke.

"Gor kill you if you don't give him first picks on all but blood right treasure. That means horse flesh, cart, and all in cart but dead bodies. Gor also kill you if you take best weapon. You know he wants biggest and best sword. Book says kill the human females. Killing them will make humans mad and come after us. Taking as prisoner will make them mad and never stop coming after us."

Book grabbed the arm of the dead wagon driver and held it up. Deftly he ripped off the index finger and stuffed it into a bag. He snarled at a woman who screamed louder at the site. One of the few Gnolls to speak any common (it was difficult to form the words) Book told her to shut up. The old Gnoll looked at the Goblins to see if they had weighed the risk of cutting Gor out on the spoils and the risks of what to do with the humans.

Baruk glared at Book. "Gor is not here, Gor didnt kill anyone. Gor can have what's left after we decide "....His hands on the hilt of his sword and holding the spear. Baruk was not only intelligent , but a superb fighter. Gor knew that as well. Baruk hoped Book remebered . He gestured while holding his weapons to allow Grozz, Grib and Kevahl to continue to take what they wanted/needed. Then he thought again and wondered if he was making the smart descision. Getting his friends killed over a sowrd and some odd trinkets may not have been owrth it. "Remeber to leave some for Gor" he said. "Gor can have wagon and horses and the female"..he paused "we take whats ours by blood rights"
Baruk stood between Book and the others, in an almost defensive stance. Spear in hand, lethal and accurate, but now holding his axe with the other.

Book yipped, mostly a sign of not caring mixed with a 'your choice'. The hair on the back of Books neck bristled. He had been stupid. Warning the goblins had cost him. Turning he squinted at the figure. Humanoid, reeked of death. Bad.

Grunting in under common to his companions. "It smells like death, and magic. If it says anything I don't understand kill it fast. I make sure you survive." Book had left his staff at camp since he didn't plan on fighting and he had not finished carving it. He had the few spells he was prepared to use but lacked access to the more obscure ones.

Kevahl jumped out of the tree

Kevahl jumped out of the tree with the arbalest held over his head, letting his legs bend to absorb the impact. He slung the weapon and returned to the wagon. On the driver he found a knife, and a coin purse with some silver in it. He left the clothes, the shirt was soaked in blood and the trousers... well, Kevahl would be embarrassed if he had done that to his trousers and didn't have dying as an excuse.

Kevahl reported his take from the driver, just so Baruk would know. He was about to open up a crate when the big stranger spoke...

Grib went for the new Weapons

Grib went for the new Weapons Baruk said he could have tossing away his rusting sword he drew picked up the guard's. It had an odd weight balance to it didn't fit well in his hand. Even he knew that if he couldn't hold a weapon well it was useless. "Gor can have sword. Human had big hands." He then drew one of the daggers much better and using it he cut free the knife bet that held the sheath. Then he froze something was wrong, instantly he went for the shadows under the remaining wheel of the wagon hiding faster then most would blink. That belt gave him away as he maneuvered it over his shoulder so it hung down from left shoulder to his right hip.

Drawing a second dagger he locked onto what spooked him. The stranger was now talking "I have been looking for you..." Creepy magic stuff even worst than Books magic "Kevah did it! I wasn't there!" Thought at the same time he had shifted those that could see how he was posed he was in a stance that could allow him to leap out fast and deadly with those two knives. On top of that he was angled for the stranger. Grib might be a bit of a coward but he wasn't the type that ran off screaming or beg for mercy. He will go for cover right away, but it's not to coward there. His first reaction is to seek cover, like Baruk said, he was a sneak not a warrior.

Baruk turned to the stranger.

Baruk turned to the stranger. Spear in hand he stared at the robed figure. HE felt no threat from the magics this one weilded. While he waited for Grozz, He spoke back to the dark figure. "You speak using the orc tongue, why?"......he answered in orcish. Then he switched to the basic gutteral language all goblin kind used for communication." What is it you want , dark one?"..he stepped a little closer to encourage his comarades to show no fear.
Baruk disliked most magic users, not that he didnt understand them, he just thought twisting magics a cheat in a world forged by hand. He always targeted the mages and such first in combat, and even went as far as to make thier deaths as painful as possible.
Baruk smirked at the thoughts of his past kills. Then he returned to ask again. "Why do you seek us?"

The robed stranger stll spoke

The robed stranger still spoke in orcish. "I speak this tongue because i came looking for an orc, you." He paused, letting out a few coughs before continuing. "The others follow you regardlessly. I came here for the greatest orcish warrior, perhaps even one of the greatest of all warriors, because i need you to go on a quest for me." He paused to cough again. "And once you return from it, you shall be showered in riches and blood. The opponents you will face are wizards and if that is not enough for you... they enjoy the slaughter of orcs, goblins, gnolls and numerous others like you. You can either put an end to them this day with my guidance, or let them continue laying waste to your kind and training more recruits for their cause."

Baruk would know that the necromancer could be referencing a tower of wizards, which sets out on crusades with their swordmages to rid the continent of all goblin kind. The tower's location however, would be unknown.

Book let out the Hyena like

Book let out the Hyena like laugh his race was known for. "The dying windbag think you some armored human on journey to prove size of his swinger." Book narrowed his eyes. "or hired by Gor to show who not loyal."

Grozz had caught the change

Grozz had caught the change purse after dropping the reins, then immediately begun searching the moment he felt that uneasiness. As his sharp eyes spied the shadow moving through the forest, his hands had been digging for his composite shortbow. He had finally found it, his swords, and two arrows just as the stranger first spoke. He had stuck the second arrow's tip into a box by his thigh and nocked the first arrow into the bow, ready to draw and fire within a split second. He had loosed a short whistle to let Baruk know that he had the stranger in his sights.

Grozz listened to the caster spin his tale, then waited for Baruk's reaction.

"gor didnt hire this dark

"gor didnt hire this dark figure "...Baruk stated still holding the spear poised to throw it. "Magics hate other magics unlike thier own".....he grunted. "Wizard tower over worked now with the tribal wars in the south" Baruk was more informed and clever than he seemed. "Would be ideal time to slaughter them, if they still exhist. " he answered to the dark one. "what do you offer in return for doing what you won't" he bluntly stated to the robed figure. "And do you want to buy our horses and wagon?" He asked this not wanting to haul the broken wagon back to Gor. He figured hed sell it off somehow and take Gor the proceeds, well some of them. Baruk had been hiding and hording funds of his own for quite a bit now. Only other one that knew was another orc from thier tribe called Ligi. Ligi wasn't full orc either, in fact they didnt know what his other half was. Baruks plan all along was to take his hidden horde (well a horde in orc terms, not like a dragon horde) and leave the tribe to start one of his own. Baruk had allies and loyalists in the tribe itself, but thier numbers and strength were not equal to Gor's. If he left and founded his own tribe chances are another warring orc tribe or even Gor would eventually hunt him down and make war to some unknown end. So he waited still, always out thinking Gor while playing the part of an ideal sub captain. HIs priorities were to the ones he knew were allies. So in an effort to salvage even more from this endeavour he started bargaining with the dark figure.
"What is your goal in this and why do you wish them dead?" Baruk asked the robed one

The robed stranger paid no

The robed stranger paid no mind to the gnoll, only speaking to Baruk. "I have no interest in these horses and wagon." He stated, then coughing a few times. "The wizards have something of mine... something precious to me, something that i alone cannot get back. I want only this one item, i leave the rest of their wealth and artifacts to you. Their crusade in the south is indeed keeping them busy. The tower will have the frail and physically weak, but magically potent wizards left, along with a very small portion of swordmages, tasked with training recruits." He paused to cough once again. "For battling magic, the best weapon to use is magic as well. I do not come her with just words, but also a gift." A sword slid out of his right long sleeve, he caught it by it's grip. The sword resembled a gladius, but it's blade was glowing with a cyan hue.

Grib narrowed his eyes

Grib narrowed his eyes thinking of what Book said. No Gor wouldn't spend money on setting up a trap, to hire an assassin maybe, not for them but for Baruk. He thought of how he would try to get rid of Baruk, this seemed to far fetched to be a simple kill. Was Book right it was a loyalty test? No there were other ways to test loyalty far easier and cheaper then hiring a mage. A watch could have spotted the wagon farther up the road and reported to Gor. So then Gor would be expecting his cut.

Only thing his mind could figure out for sure, is this was a very expensive set up. To expensive for Gor to bother with. His mind kept coming up with questions. Wisely or more likely cowardly he kept quiet it was Baruk's call. Besides he didn't want to draw any more attention to himself from the mage.

Baruk stared at the sword

Baruk stared at the sword glowing and looked back at the robed one . "What sort of trickery is this ?" He asked . "You offer a weapon to kill mages " Baruk thought how valuable the sword would be. Got surely would want this he thought to himself. In his mind he was weighing the risk and reward factors.

Okay Grib spoke the questions in his mind got to much and boiled over. "Why Mage with such special weapon need an Orc? Sword like that can get thieves to get thing, or Shadow Walker." To say a Shadow walker was an assassin was like saying Da Vinci liked to paint pictures. "Or mercenary adventurer who does stuff like this. Why an Orc? Why Baruk?"

Book snarled at the sword.

Book snarled at the sword. "Do what you want Orc. That death smell one only seem to care about you. Gojng back to camp." The Gnoll turned and went back up the hill. Like many Shaman and their Druid or Ranger cousins he was completely unimpeded by either the hill or the undergrowth of briars and brambles that grew densely over it. It was why he had chosen it as his perch. Only cursed wood elves moved as naturally and as quickly. Book also left no tracks. Not even a fabled Ranger or best nosed tracker would be able to discern where he went once he was out of eyesight.

Grozz called over his shoulder "Hey Book, are ya really that scared of Gor? No room for adventure in between your bouts of being the tribe's biggest grump and ruminating about the better days? C'mon, you old mutt, I know that you want to get out there and live again. More importantly, you know that too."

While Grozz's words may have seemed insulting, his tone of voice was full of respect and warmth. Book shared Grozz's love of nature and the half-orc ranger had tried to nurture a bond with the old shaman since he'd first joined the tribe.

He glanced at Grib, or it

He glanced at Grib, or it seemed so because his hood turned slightly in his direction, but seemed to have ignored his questions, as the hood turned back to face Baruk. "This is no trickery, Baruk." He coughed a few times. "This sword protects it's bearer from magic and would be entirely necessary if you choose to attack the wizard tower. Only with this sword you can defeat the wizards without risking harm. The swordmages..." He paused, letting out a few coughs. "...will pose no threat to you either, their weapons are magic, their armor is magic, this sword will easily break them. Your main concern is the dwarven key master, he holds the keys to each and every room in the tower and he is the only one who holds keys to the basement, which is where you will find your prize and i - mine."

Kevahl listened to the

Kevahl listened to the exchanges. It seemed like a good deal, but it wasn't being offered to him, Baruk would have to decide. Not that Kevahl wouldn't be right behind him if Baruk did decide to take this wizard's offer. Or scouting ahead, or watching a flank... And if it did mean a break with Gor, well, too bad. Baruk was Kevahl's leader, not Gor.

The only question Kevahl had was, "If we do go off to this tower, do we tell Gor we're leaving, or do we let him figure it out for himself sometime next month?" A bit of his disdain for Gor had slipped out, there. If Baruk decided not to go, Kevahl would have to watch that more carefully...

Baruk looked at the robed one

Baruk looked at the robed one and spoke loudly "I will think on this task"..he paused a moment to watch Book dissapear into the forest. "We head back to the tribe now with our spoils." He looked at the broken wagon wheel. "Kevahl, can you fix that ?" he asked his goblin companion knowing his abilities in tinkering and such. He looked at the robed figure again and said "Find me again in three moons. You will have your answer"...then nodded breifly to him and set about the task of piling all the armor peices and odd wepons left by the riders and guards that werent claimed by anyone.

Baruk watched as the robed

Baruk watched as the robed figure walked off. Noticing the cough, and thinking about the offer. "There is more to that than what's being said " he thought out loud as he pondered the whole ordeal. Baruk then refocused on loading up the wagon. He was happy to have Grozz back. Grozz was a feirce fighter and even more clever tracker than most give him credit for. He just made thier group alot more capable. Then his thoughts went to Book. The stubborn old gnoll which aided them many times. He wondered why Book seemed to be distant. These thoughts didnt last long, after all Baruk was an orc. His main concern was trying to grow the tribe and just help it survive. He had turned to Kevahl now because Kevahl was about to open one of the boxes in the cart when the mage appeared. "Did you see what was in it?" he asked. "And who wants to open the others?" he said this as he himself opened one of the smaller wooden boxes under the pile of old clothes in a corner of the wagon. In the box itself was nothing special. Some flatware made of silver and something else. They looked old and worn. Still, he thought its silver. "Gor can have this" he said as he closed the box, not before slipping a small knife out of the set. It's faded polish look made it look kind of bland, but it was balanced very well. "Grib"..he spoke looking for his sneaky little friend, "You maybe can use this for your lockpicking, small and sturdy" he said as he meant to offer it to Grib.

Book knew only the half-orc

Book knew only the half-orc could keep up with his pace, not that he was worried about being followed, he never hid his intentions. His spirit guide had been pestering him for weeks to leave camp. He had ignored it since his clan was in such a dangerous predicament. Goblins could be relied on to be unreliable, Orcs were like men though. All chaos and postures for power. His race he understood. If you wanted to be Alpha, you challenged for Alpha. Shamans were never the Alpha, they had other things to look after. Even his position could be challenged for, but only by an adept, so challenges were more rare, every five or so years when a young one had forgotten what happened to the previous challenger or thought book was finally too old.

Book doubted Baruk would set off right away on his fool quest. He also doubted he would stay behind. He would however wait until Baruk asked for his help since that would make them even.

Book entered his tent. Two Gnolls who had been playing dice outside of it nodded to him. He sat and took the humans finger he had broken off. It was always best to inscribe with new bone. Picking up his staff he began etching in the patterns for one of his spells. It was hard for him to remember this spell so better to put it on the staff.

Ligi had seen Book return to the tribes camp. He watched as he walked into his tent. His friends must be ok he thought as Book would have reported to Gor if they werent. Well he should have, Ligi was still having a hard time understanding that one. All he knew about Book was Baruk trusted him somewhat to keep asking him to go with thier raiding parties. Ligi had seen Book in action as well , casting and fighting. He respected his ways and always tried to show it. Ligi went to Books tent and stood outside and called his name. "Book.....Where is the party?"....he asked. "They need help?" He kept his eyes on the two gnolls playing dice outside.

Grozz grunted as Book

Grozz grunted as Book seemingly ignored him, then lowered the bow as the stranger disappeared back into the woods.

He bent over and began searching again, quickly locating his quiver, which was still loaded with arrows. The shortbow could not fit around Grozz's thick torso like a longbow could, so the quiver had a hook on it. Grozz dropped the bow onto the hook, then set the quiver on one of the boxes. Next he located his sword harness and slung that onto his back. He checked his falcatas to make sure they weren't damaged, then sheathed them. Then he put on the quiver and bow. Finally, he located his armor, which he folded up and tucked in the satchel he'd normally use for carrying smaller pieces of kill.

He looked over at the cowering woman, amazed that she hadn't tried to run while they were talking to the strange caster. "What we gonna do with her?"

Kevahl resumed breaking into

Kevahl resumed breaking into the box as he answered Baruk. "Three hours, one if one of you giants can put a boulder or something under that axle to hold that corner of the wagon up. Less if I find something to help in here..."

The first box proved to have furs and skins... already partially tanned, mostly from weasels, though Kevahl had heard humans had special names like "ermine" and "mink" for northern weasels. There was some wolf hide, also, and that he pulled out. He dragged the box off the wagon, used his claw hammer to take out half the nails from the top, and then sealed it back up...

Grib came out from the front

Grib came out from the front wheel and headed to Baruk taking the knife. "It do. Perhaps I can get blacksmith to make me proper tools. He always refused before... Not honorable things thieves tools are bla bla bla." He added the knife to his collection. "Don't like spooky fellow, why he didn't go to Tribe chief like tradition says he should. To many questions to many angles." It was Grib nature to think of ways to be backstabbed or to backstab someone just how his tribe worked.

Ligi took the gnolls words

Ligi took the gnolls words with stride. He stared down at the gnolls gaming with thier dice and grunted. He'd go see for himself he thought and turned away from the tent. He grabbed a spear from a rack by another semi wooden shelter, and then scanned around the encampment. Gil and fin were , two goblins he knew were standing by another small rougher looking shelter. He went up to them and said , "grab your weapons and follow"...as he did , another orc, a large one named Boto approached him. Boto was one of Gor's guards and loyalists. "Where you going" he asked Ligi. Ligi looked at him and lied " Getting more meat" not that he had to answer to anyone but Gor, but wanted to make sure his leaving wasn't anything more than the typical gathering. Offering to bring more meat is always looked on a good thing. Especially to the oversized gluttons Gor chose as his guard. He turned and headed down the trail towards the road, the two smaller goblins in two.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"I, I, I d don't trust you..you horrbile things...y you k kiled my brother" the woman wailed. She went back to sobbing in the corner her hands frantically now searching for anything to weild as some sort of weapon. Baruk looked at her and knew what had to be done. If they took her back to the camp she probably would'nt have a fast death. She'd be kept as a slave untill she was useless. If they let her go she'd obviously bring even more humans here with a vengence of over exagerated numbers of orcs and the like and theyd all be in harms way even more. having her just dissapear is the most ideal solution for both parties. Baruk looked at her and said in orcish and calmly as to not alarm her even more. "She needs to die". Then he turned to Kevahl as he was going through the fur boxes,"Keep what youd like. Just save some for Gor. " then he started prying open another crate with his axe. This one smelled funny, its odor was clear with the lid on. When he popped the lid open he peered in. "Cheese" he said with a smile. "Food for the camp" he finished. "I don't want any, but take some if so wanted" he told everyone. There were two more crates/boxes to be opened, and three smaller ones. He had only seen three big crates origianlly, and was happy to realize even more potential treasures awaited.

Grib looked into the wagon as well. He already came to the same thought that Baruk did about the female. Didn't care if she was tormented at camp thought to him if they brought her alive was just the same as dead. It was the trouble of having to deal with a living captive till they got back to the tribe that tipped the scales to her dead. "Easier in long run for her to die." Grib went to one of the other small crates looking it over for signs of traps, a habit. Then he opened it "Found the other food supplies, looks like some dried meats, teas, dried fruits, maybe Oats." He looked at the woman "Want me to take care of her Baruk?"

Ligi was heading down the trail with speed. He wasn't trying to be stealthy, he just wanted to catch up with Baruk. He was a little insulted that Baruk didnt invite him along. He knew Baruk would have good reasons as to why, Just not sure at the moment. Fin and GIl scampered to keep up with the faster moving orc. By the time they arrived at the road, Baruk was unwrapping a quiver full of arrows that was under the ragged clothing at the bottom of the wagon. Looking at them, he knew they wouldnt work in Kevahl's dwarven weapon. He showed the quiver to Grozz. He had no use for arrows, he was not very good with a bow. When ligi showed up , Baruk saw him out of the corner of his eye. THats when he heard Grib ask to finish the female off. He nodded to Ligi, and then looked at Grib. "Only if Grozz didn't want the kill" he looked at Grozz."He saw her first, He gets rights" all of this said in a clam orcish tone. When Fin and Gil saw Grib they clamoured up to him. These two looked up to the smaller goblin, mainly because Baruk took him alot on raids. "Grib!" the other two exclaimed. "You kill again?"..they asked excitedly.

Book was deep in thought.

Book was deep in thought. Across from him he saw a ghostly figure of a large Hyena. His spirit animal. It whispered him the secrets of spells. These secrets are what he inscribed into his staff. His stomach rumbled. It had been nearly two days since he had eaten. He preferred his prey living but had been fasting to easier commune with his spirit guide. "Hyep, make sure raiders bring back one of the dead men, fresh kill, fresh meat. Can't rely on Gor to let us eat horses."

The older of the two Gnolls stood. He was massive nearly 8 feet and close to 300 lbs. Hyep had a long fresh scar running down his left pectoral muscle. Book had saved him at the last moment from the last Minotaur. That colluseum fight had been a bloodbath. Even 12 vs 3 the Gnolls had lost half their group taking down the beasts. "Yes Book, what part you want?" Book said one word before going back to his commune "Leg".

Hyep looked at his fellow Gnoll, a slightly smaller and younger female called Tega. "Book gonna be busy till dinner, keep the small ones out. He gets pissed if he loses talk with spirits." Tega grinned, her savage teeth jutting out everywhere. "Course Hyep, and I winning the dice. You owe me three copper." Hyep grunted and went in the direction the raiding party was supposed to set up their trap.

Baruk nodded to Grozz and turned his attention back to Ligi. "We need to help fix the wagon." Ligi went into the wood and came back with a decent sized branch to prop it up.
Fin and Gil were almost crowded around grib , they looked up to him and wanted to be thought of as he is. They respected Kevahl as well, but they also feared him some as his tech and tinkering intelligence was intimidating to them. "What can we do?" the two goblins chimed in near unison to the other members , eager to please.

Why do they look up to him? Shaking his head he looked at Ligi "Why bring them here? This is human road a rider or even another wagon could show up any time." Heading for the side of the road "Okay Fin how you think is best way to hide here?"

Kevahl didn't care to much for killing the woman, but it was that or slavery for her, and slavery would just be trading a quick death for a lingering one. At least he knew Grozz could do the job quickly.

The cheese was nice, but not helpful for fixing the wheel. None of the cheeses were big enough, nor tough enough, to work as a wagon wheel. But now he had help, and as Ligi levered the wagon up he slipped a fair sized rock under the branch to hold it up. The broken wheel now hung free, and Kevahl started taking it off.

Hyep wandered on the

Hyep wandered on the disorderly scene. Gnolls were all for chaotic fighting but understood the value of hit and run. The longer these orcs and Goblins milled around the more tracks they would leave and the more they could be spotted.

Hyep walked past the woman snarled at the Orc who was... doing very odd things by talking to her in some weird human way. "She weak, she lost, she food." With that Hyep grabbed her by the neck with one pawed hand and wrenched it. A loud crack could be heard as the life instantly dimmed from her eyes. He let the dead body drop where it was.

"Book says Gnolls get a man for meat." He casually walked over and grabbed the dead driver and slung the dead human over his shoulder like a slab of beef. "Hurry up, human roads have many eyes."

Hyep turned and walked the way he came from. He knew better than to keep Book waiting. Book didn't gift those who insulted him.

"Hyep they want to fix Wagon

"Hyep they want to fix Wagon so Gor can have his cut." Shakes his head even Grib caught on to that. Of course Hyep was right as well Grib was also worried about leaving too many tracks. At this point he was hoping to confuse how many numbers there party had. "We leave when Beruk say we leave. Not Book."

Fin hid in the tree quite

Fin hid in the tree quite well . These two weren't as useless as it seems . Baruk saw the way fin hid and grunted. "Fin, Gil, go hide down the road and keep an eye out . " Baruk wasn't too worried about the tracks at the moment the sun was setting and he knew humans don't travel here at night. One of the reasons he chose his attack time. Less chance of secondary encounters. Ligi looked at kelvahl and asked if he could help. Then Baruk saw the gnoll snap the woman's neck. He first thought about sending his spear through the gnolls head. Then he stopped and a wry smile came over his face. He had a plan. One he could use to his advantage . He'd fill the group in on the trek back. As he waited and watched his stomach growled. Eating some of the dried meats while watching kelvahl work, he approached Grozz so he wouldn't go after the gnoll.

Kevalh popped the cotters out

Kevalh popped the cotters out of the hub and pulled the wheel off, swinging it clear of the wagon. "Go ahead, Ligi. I'll let you know when I'm ready to put it on again." He laid the wheel down and looked at the damage. Three of the seven spokes were kindling, and the rim was cracked. One of these years he'd learn to assess first, promise afterward. Fortunately, he'd found that wolf skin.

He removed the rim and the four surviving spokes from the hub and checked the lengths and thickness, suppressing a wince when Hyep killed the human woman. Then he pulled one of the boards off the back of the wagon. It was too thin by itself, but Kevahl had a plan. He pulled a saw-toothed knife from his belt and started sawing along the length of the board, occasionally looking over to see what was happening between Grozz, Baruk, and Hyep.

Hyep was large for a Gnoll,

Hyep was large for a Gnoll, Gnolls usually went pound for pound with full blooded orcs, so Hyep was not really expecting the halfie to get enraged and attack him. Hyep was also very confused as to why this raiding party cared so much about talking food. This was why Gnolls should stick with Gnolls Hyep thought as he rolled on the ground pushing both the carcass of the human off him and the half-orc. He debated for a moment on snapping the halfies neck and just eating him instead, but Book wouldn't like that and their clan alpha had been killed in the Colosseum fights. Book was all that was left of their previous leadership and had told them that Gor was this groups Alpha and Baruk was one of his Betas. They had a blood debt to them for awhile, so don't kill them if you can avoid it. For a moment Hyep actually had a pang of sadness over his old Alphas death, Things were very straight forward with Gnoll Alphas. Shamans were always so sideways in how they acted. Sideways, but usually worth listening to. Gor was a stupid Alpha, used his clan as guards instead of the natural trackers and hunters they were, which made this halfie valuable to Gor. Since this halfie could also track and hunt. Can't eat something valuable to the Alpha.

Hyep bristled at Grozz. "Don't be stupid tiny half-man, if you wanted that food as a mate you should have said! Otherwise it just food for birds or us. Book said man not female, or we had eaten her alive. Live meat is better and you know that. Best for growing new Gnolls in our females bellies, they get big like me." Hyep grabbed the carcass in one hand and slung it over his shoulder again. Looking at Baruk he nodded yipping the Gnollish word for Beta or Lieutenant. An overall respectful gesture since despite the Chaotic nature of Gnolls the hierarchy was well respected in the clan when not feuding.

Grozz was seconds away from tackling the Gnoll when Baruk interceded by stepping between them. Grozz spitted him with a furious glare and rumbled in Orcish. "She was my kill! Why did you stop me from gutting that flea-ridden mutt like a fish!?"

"Not bad hiding Fin. Good

"Not bad hiding Fin. Good for look out, but what you attack with? Hide up high when you have range weapon. Or brave enough to jump down on prey. It's fine when on guard duty then you have allies on ground that can attack when your climbing down. Otherwise you're stuck in a tree and your enemies can surround you and use their range weapons, spears, or just start a fire at the base of the tree. Goblin are best at moving fast and hiding. When thinking of where to hide also think of where to run if found." He looked over seeing the Gnoll take the woman and a very angry Grozz being stopped by Baruk. Then he looked back at Fin and Gil "You heard Baruk! Get going and hide keep watch, be sneaky!"

"Better plan, How do you

"Better plan, How do you think Gor will react to the gnolls when hes told his live prize was killed"....Baruk stared at Grozz. " Gor may challenge the gnolls, and either way his allies and or our enemies will be thinned." a wicked smile now on Baruks face. " For all he knows we were going to bring her back with us" Baruk was hoping Grozz understood that the chaos this event could cause would strengthen thier artificial bonds with Gor , and maybe even get one or two of his champion guards killed. Or in the very least thing those annoying gnolls he liked so much. "Book wasnt here, we tell Gor that one did it himself and see what happens."
"Grib!" Baruk yelled, "You still excellent hunter and trapper right?" he asked remebering Gribs stealth and sneakyness combined with his quickness was great at cathing rabbits and squirrels. "Wheel be fixed soon, get us meat while we wait" he knew the more they brought back the more weight his words would carry.

Gil and Fin listened to Grib's command and each had a small knife as they hid. Fin was in a tree with a branch from another close to use as an escape route, and Gil hid in a hollowed out trunk with holes at either end.

Hyep used the skunk path to

Hyep used the skunk path to get back to camp. The only other way was much longer and winding. The wagon would have to go that way. The skunk path ended with a short 12 foot vertical climb over a natural walk wall. Hyep threw the carcass over and scaled it quickly. (It being not even twice his height). Hyep yipped in Gnollish (since very few of the Goblins or Orcs spoke Gnoll) "Meats here"

The few Gnolls in earshot grinned until they saw the meat was already dead. They grumbled but quickly came over. The best parts always went quick. Their knives working like piranha dissected the corpse in minutes. Hyep grabbed the left thigh and buttock. One of the gnolls snapped at him for taking so much (even though the other gnoll wouldnt stop him from taking it due to hyeps size.) "Halfs Books." The other Gnoll laid his ears flat. Most of the Gnolls would follow Book but were more afraid of him than respected him. Hyep and Tega were the exceptions. They understood the only reason they had survived captivity was because of Book.

Hyep thought again and grabbed the lower leg section for Tega. Only half the gnolls in camp were from Books tribe, of those six only two were female. If he wanted a mate without having to go steal one he figured Tega was the better choice of the two. She was stronger and good with a bow.

Tega was leaning against a stump when Hyep threw her the leg. She caught it in one swipe and bit into it. Knocking on the frame Hyep quitely called to Book

"Any problems Hyep?" Book had just finished his ritual, he was starved. "Orcs mad I kill female, didn't know they wanted for breeding. Those halfies so small, don't know why they bother making." With Hyep it was always about size. "I am also small hyep, so are the Goblins." Book could hear Hyep scoff at the idea of a goblin being useful. "You Book, still bigger than most Orcs."

Book came out and looked up at his younger fellow. "That raiding party up to something. Something Gor won't like. There might be Alpha fight soon." Book snarled at the idea of the blue sword. He didn't care who was Alpha, he cared that what was left of his tribe was in the middle of it and they had no young ones yet to replace any of the weak who would be killed in the conflict. Hyep grinned, always eager for a bloodbath. "No it bad Hyep. Not good. They play politics like jewel wearing humans, not like Alphas." Hyep spit on the ground at the idea of words deciding who was right and who should lead. "Orcs kill almost as good as Gnolls..." Book smiled at that, they indeed were killers. "But Orcs also almost as backwards as Goblins." Hyep nodded in agreement.

Book thought for a moment. Baruks raiding party was tiny. Gor would crush them with sheer numbers if a conflict started. Not to mention the Goblins allegiances ended when Baruk stopped breathing. If Gor died there were two other Betas that would also fight for control. baruk would probably kill those two, unless they worked together to kill Baruk first. Despite Hyeps disdain for the Goblins, Book knew that there was even one or two of them that had the brains to lead behind a puppet Orc. Individually the three races didn't have much more than a warband size group of combatants. Ten Gnolls, just under two dozen Orcs, and thirty odd goblins (who could keep Goblins together long enough to count them). The problem wasn't in the numbers but in the caliber. The politic races of men, elves, and dwarves had killed so many, but the survivors were STRONG.

"Get Rustac, Yar-rip, and Qwek. Anyone asks have them tell Gor I need for a ritual."
This would get his gnolls (Book had an uncommon attachment to his tribe) near his tent. The three he mentioned were not nearly as useful as Tega or Hyep but they were his people. Let the Orcs play their games. If either side tried to use his tribe in games.... Book would see them flayed alive as lunch.

Unseen by the tribes scouts

Unseen by the tribes scouts and lookouts, the lone figure crept silentley and hidden towards it's goal. A small clearing nearly half a mile north of the camp. The figure emerged from the treeline and stood facing a larger group of armored warriors. "they didnt see me " kini , the wood elf said as she reported back the camp's contents. "We should strike now" She said to the figure that appeared to be the leader of the group. There were 22 elves in all. They had brought a few of thier allies as well. 7 centaurs armored like Knights.
"Our numbers are lesser, but our strength is greater" Marow The head centaur agreed. "These vile things hunt the wood without distinction, killing off those we need and use to survive ourselves." he continued in the elvish tongue. "the wars to the south has chased them up here and thier numbers grow" he added in an almost furious tone."they must be dispatched, the humans put up with them because they are afraid, the dwarves have even started trading with a few of the tribes. " Kini interrupted, "Only the derro". Marow huffed at this. "The derro make it even worse, for those cave dwellers to come to the surface knowing they can make profit of the growing numbers of orcs and the like here. It all stands to reason , we're losing ground each day to the vile things." Kini spoke up again," and what of the minotaurs, and bugbears that have joined clans?" she continued. "we should wipe them all out" she was irate at thios point. "Easy Kini, " the elder elf finally spoke up "We need to gain alliances to defeat them all, or hide in ours alone and let them have at each other. " he walked closer to her. "the question is , what's binding them together?" Marow asked in a blunt tone. "Find that and find the cure to this hideous infection of vile beasts". he stomped around clearly eager to wipe them out. "First things first"....He drew his elaborate sword and pointed it towards the path that led to the camp.

Grib scratched his nose

Grib scratched his nose thinking what he heard. "Too many might have seen Book return with nothing, and Hyep return with man flesh. Gor guards, or even Gor himself might have. My Mother always said speak truth, it's blade sharper then lie. We tell Gor truth Hyep killed the female, and took the man flesh before Gor could have his Chief cut." He than went to Kevalh "I need your arbalest, Baruk want's me to do some hunting and I don't have time to set traps."

Kevahl nodded and paused in

Kevahl nodded and paused in his sawing to unsling the arbalest and the quiver of bolts. "Fifteen left, not counting the one I put in the guard's shoulder. If you lose any, you have to help me convince Smith to make more."

He resumed sawing, and soon had six strips as long as the spokes were.

It took a few moments, but

It took a few moments, but Grozz finally began to calm down and listen to Baruk's reasoning. Baruk's plan would play directly into Grozz's plans for vengeance, so he decided to go along. He laid the female's body down beside the corpse she had referred to as her brother, then pulled one of his falcata's and hacked the top off of the final box. What he saw made him grin toothily.

He dug into the box and then looked over at the orc. "Hey Baruk, we got weapons here." he said, tossing him an axe bundled in oilcloth.

He took the weapon "I haven't been able to get him to make me proper sneaking tools." He grunts his voice in a poor imitation "We in forest there aren't any locks for you to unlock." Rolls his eyes "except the ones say in the wagon." Hearing Grozz hacking. Then he headed into the forest as soon as he got to the edge he was in sneak mode careful of where he placed his foot, sure he wouldn't get any game so near where the fight happened. It was more habit and practice.

Book and some of the Gnolls

Book and some of the Gnolls were in a loose circle eating the former wagon driver when one of the Orcs walked by. "If you eating, where raiding party?" Book could have chosen words to cover Baruk, but baruk wasn't being truthful with him so why bother.

"Raiders deciding what to do with spoils. Live horses, dead humans, whatever they had in some wagon."

The Orcs eyes went wide. "They not bring it unopen to gor?!" Book shrugged. "Hyep had to kill last female, words about letting her go free so he snapped neck." gnolls didn't really engage in lying to someone the viewed as weaker than themselves, so Hyep had taken the common word for "Free" at face value, not as a deception to calm the woman.

The lackey Orc smiled that way an assistant supervisor with no real power smiles when he can tattle at work. "Gor gonna be pissed! He gonna crack skulls!"

Book shrugged. "Some dead smell man came, think he dimmed Baruks brains. Was gone when Hyep fetched us dinner."

The lackey went wide eyed. "they not kill?" Book shook his head no. "It was powerful death magic."

The Orc turned and ran off towards Gor's "palace", a very large hut with a short spiked fence built around it for defense.

Hyep looked at Book. "Why you do Book, thought you liked that Beta more?" Book looked back at his tribe mate and smiled. "When they get ready to fight, whoever offers us better deal get my magic. It time they owe us something, Baruk is smarter, he will offer better deal. We come out ahead." The small circle of Gnolls barked their approval. They would fight on the side Book told them to and happily kill and consume the losers.

Skore, the tribe's lone

Skore, the tribe's lone hobgoblin, was ignored by most everybody in the tribe. Some of the younger goblins looked up to him, but the elder ones and the orcs considered him a joke because he fought with his bare hands. He'd managed to make friends with Julia, the human who 'led' the tribe's slaves and concubines. Through her, he'd gotten to know Grozz and Grozz's friend Baruk. Julia had been nearly inconsolable since Grozz had disappeared a few weeks back, so Skore had watched over her to make sure none of the orcs tried anything.

His tent was near the gnoll encampment, so he heard the conversation between Book, Hyep, and the Orc. He didn't want to see Baruk and the rest slaughtered as soon as they got back to camp, so he stood up from where he was kneeling in meditation and ducked into his tent. His tent was near the outer perimeter, so it was easy to slip out the hole he'd fashioned in the back. Moving silently and staying in the shadows, he slipped around the perimeter and leapt off the rock wall that separated the gnoll tents from their 'skunk trail', gripping the wall with one hand to slow the speed of his fall.

Once on the other side, he began moving at top speed down the trail. He was one of the fastest members of the tribe, with only Hyep being able to keep up with him. He quickly reached the road and stayed in the shadows of the bordering forest until he reached the wagon. He stepped out and approached Baruk. "You have a problem, Baruk."

After Kevahl cut the wolfhide

After Kevahl cut the wolfhide into long cords, six strips of wood became three pairs, each pair bound tightly in the leather cord. Then he whittled each end to fit into the sockets of the hub and the rim. He was fitting the rim onto the spokes, both old and improvised, when the Hob, Skore, popped out of the woods. He listened carefully as he snapped the last spoke into place and began wrapping the rim.

Grib was quiet as he snuck

Grib was quiet as he snuck among the trees. He was no ranger thought he wasn't bad. So it wasn't long before he was away from the group where the creatures weren't quiet or hiding. He spotted a squirrel dart for a tree, to lean perhaps a first year. Continuing on his ears shifting back and forth trying to pick up any sound. His hearing was sharper than a surface goblin. Just a natural adaptation to living in the underdark. Brushing aside his memories he continued on his hunt he wanted more than a small squirrel.

As Grib blinks he would

As Grib blinks he would notice in his view something that wasn't there before. He would see a sword stuck in a tree as if it was stabbed into it, but no signs of it's wielder, if there even was one. The sword's hilt was made of pure gold, encrusted with a few diamonds and it's blade was silver, it also seemed to give off unnatural light. It looked VERY expensive. Etched into it's blade were letters, those were dwarven runes carved along the blade, but the sentence was cut off by the tree, though Grib would only recognize them if he's seen such writings before. "...Grib..." The sword whispered, though the whisper did not come from any direction in specific, so it would seem the message was telepathic. "...come... Grib... Don't... let... them... find... me..." It whispered again after a longer pause.

Along with the whispers he could also hear a dwarf yelling in the distance and several branches crack as if stepped on. "Find it, lads! Keep yer eyes open!"

Grib had the choice either do grab the shiny sword and run, or leave it to the dwarves.

A few things ran in his mind.

A few things ran in his mind. First he hated magical things, magic in general for that matter. Mages, Wizard and such beings could look old and weak but can level mountains. Where others could be prime of their youth and barely able to light a candle. Second was that if he took that thing Gor would definitely take it from him, one way or another. Third was a goblin proverb 'If something looks tempting, it's most likely a trap.' So first thing first he looked for any signs that it was a trap, well clearly it was magic. Runes , voices in my head and it knows my name, yeah not a good sign. "Why should I?"

At the same time his eyes went to the trees scanning each one for the best option to hide in. One that gave the best range and angle to the area he was standing in right now. Of course the first rule of hiding, plan a way out.

"How many are out there?" He

"How many are out there?" He was searching his pockets, did he bring a numbing poison he couldn't remember. "You think I care about Orc ghost? Your trap so you can haunt me." Ah there it was his vile of centipede poison. He went to his chosen tree and scurried up. Baruk wanted meat, there were Dwarves nearby and to boot a fancy sword. Of course the also still thinking this was a trap. If the sword trapped a Orc soul it could do the same to a Goblin. Heck he heard about things that did that and the only way to free one soul was to trap another.

He had 15 bolts and enough poison for maybe 10 of them. A group of dwarves shouldn't be more than that right?

Grib went to his chosen tree

Grib went to his chosen tree and climbed up setting the Arbalest and adding the poison to the bolt. "They die then." It was a waiting for a game of pin the bolt in the dwarf. Once he was ready he put his hands to his mouth and made a bird call. Hoping that the I'm in trouble signal would be heard by Baruk and the others, it was a simple bird call impersonation one the others should know. Of course he wondered if the normal Underground dwelling Dwarfs would recognize that the bird shouldn't be in the area at this time of year.

The group of dwarves finally

The group of dwarves finally showed up. There were a total of six dwarves, five of them were carrying arbalests much like Grib's and wearing leather armor along with green cloaks. The sixth one was leading them and was garbed in plate armor and carrying a shield, and hammer. All of them though had some sort of goggles equipped. The lead dwarf spotted the sword and yelled. "There it is, lads! Wrap it up!" One of the dwarves took out a blanket and carefully started wrapping the sword's hilt inside of it, without touching the handle.

None of the dwarves seemed familiar with nature, or at least birds, as they did not show any interest in the sound.

Curses to many Arbalest. He was counting on them to be axe holding dwarves not range weapon types. Seeing them wrap the sword first only confirmed his suspicion about grabbing the sword in the first place. The element of surprise was still on his side, he might get off two shots before he became goblin kabob. No better to hide and if the others show up track.

The dwarf had finished

The dwarf had finished wrapping the sword's hilt and started to tie it tightly to the sword with a piece of rope, while the other dwarves kept watch of the surrounding forest.

To Grib's surprise he heard another whisper, though this one was not from the sword, due to the fact that it came from behind him. "Hey, what you hiding from?" If Grib was to look back he would see a halfling behind him crouched on a branch. The halfling had medium-long brown hair and scrappy leather armor with a bow strapped around his chest along with a quiver on his back and sheathes holding daggers by his hips. This halfling seemed to be very sneaky, as Grib wouldn't have heard him coming even with his enhanced hearing.

Hearing the out-of-place bird

Hearing the out-of-place bird call from the direction Grib had gone, Kevahl put two and three together. He answered with a similar bird call. "Seems like Grib found something he needs help to kill, but doesn't want to just let it pass by. Or something's passing him towards us." He lay the wheel down on the ground again. "Sneaky people, follow me." He went off into the woods, moving slowly both for stealth and for tracking Grib. Grib was better than he was at sneaking, but only Grozz was better at tracking.

Baruk listened to the hobgoblin's tale and thought. "Cursed gnolls and thier cowardice ". He decided he had enough of the positioning and he'd settle it all when they got back . When he heard kelvahl ask for sneaky help he knew there was something afoot . "Gil! Fin!" He yelled and the two goblins clamored from thier hiding spots. " guard wagon with Ligi". He looked over at Grozz. "let's go" he said as he made his way following kevahl He by far wasn't yhe sneakiest and most silent. But Baruk could hunt dear with a spear. So he went into hunting mode and followed his tracker.

The peon Orc quickly told an exceptionally exaggerated version of what Book had said. Book didn't calculate the Orc exaggerating what Book had told him. Book didn't need to lie to get what he wanted, a clean slate. That clean slate meant some dead Orcs, Book had his preference of the winner but could live with either Gor or Baruk being victor.

While Baruk was busy with his goblin entourage the story spread through Gor's personal encampment. It was three Orcs later that Gor himself heard the tale. By then it went something like this......

"Gor, Da raiders sacked a human caravan of gold and steel from the dwarf lands. Baruk hid it all and let most the humans go! That why he not back when Gnoll magic healer get back. Then a skeleton mage who was watching the gold magiked Baruk into his servant."

meanwhile at Books tent
----------------------------------

Book was gnawing on what was left of the leg bone sucking out the bone marrow. Hyep had been forming a question for the past few minutes. He was average for a Gnoll on intelligence, so a bit slow by human standards. "Book, what if Gor kill Baruk as soon as party gets back?"

Book thought for a minute, that did sound like Gor, but Book had been careful enough with his story to leave things that even the dim Gor would be curious about and ask before attacking.

"Gor should want answers before blood."

Hyep nodded, if he heard what Book said he would have wanted answers too before deciding to kill a beta. Book was a good shaman.

Near the forge a Goblin

Near the forge a Goblin yelled at it few into a tent. The reason was Mukzul kicked him, that goblin going to speak very softly and high pitch for a long time. Mukzul was larger than most Orcs the reason was simple he was the blacksmith and weaponsmith. "Listen here you worm! First Baruk is loyal to the tribe he would set aside his greed for the tribe, never has he hasn't done so. That's why Gor trust him enough to send him out with out one of Gor's chosen watching him at all times. Second There was only Baruk, and a few goblins a very small party. Humans crave gold even more than Dwarves, that means more guards, better weapons, perhaps five or six Orcs could have done it. Baruk didn't have Orcs he had goblins and Books. Goblins aren't that brave your cowardness wouldn't let you fight."

He picked up his heave smith hammer holding it with one hand and used it to point at swing it about to those who turned to look at the commotion. "You say Baruk greedy, who would deny the tribe for his own selfishness? That insult not to Baruk it's insult to US! We are ORCS! Where is Orc Honor where are our Codes? Where are your brains! Besides you really think Grozz Honor would let him free a single Human that captured him? He maybe halfbreed, but Half of him still Orc. NOW Get back to work and stop gossiping like a bunch of human women." Mukzul turned and went back to the forge and grunting as he used the bellows to raise the heat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instinct told him to scream and run, he held his instinct if whoever it was behind him wanted to kill him he be dead. He didn't look behind unnecessary movement would risk drawing attention, thought these Dwarves might not even have that much forest skill to notice it. Grib made a note to practice more with Grozz about such detection himself. Softly "Dwarves and a magic sword."

*A few of the goblins

*A few of the goblins listening to the blacksmith bellow cringed. One elbowed another out of earshot of the Orc. 'Yeah dat Orc all high and mighty, but me saw Kigog steal a half fixed dagger last week. We know better, horde everything, trust only those you see." The other goblin nodded in agreement. That Baruk was a big Orc, almost as big as the smith or Gor, of course he would hide gold for himself!

While baruk might share in his spoils more than the average Orc, his lack of groveling before Gor had been noticed by at least the Goblins already.

The rumor mill turned on. Some of the Goblins commenting on how smart the Smith would be to cover for baruk, since good steel was hard to get and Baruk must have a lot of it!*

The sword was all wrapped and tied up, only now the dwarf dared pull the sword out of the tree. "All done." The dwarf who pulled out the sword said, then their leader added. "Let's get movin'! There are orcs in these forests." The sword carrier placed the shiny sword into his backpack and took hold of his arbalest once more, then all the dwarves turned to walk away in the direction they came from. They would start arguing about what kind of ale is the best, as their voices slowly fade into the distance.

"Looks like they're gone now. What was so important about that sword anyway, huh?" The halfling asked now in full voice since the dwarves were gone.
