CoT and SoH

Can't recall if 'Kickstarter Discussion" is to talk about the kickstarter OR a play for kickstarter pledgers to talk. Regardless, as the title implies; I only just recently discovered Ship of Heroes. And with it's childish (and I'm sure) placeholder looking logo/title I had no real idea that it would be a serious endeavor by other CoX loving people. I'm glad I was wrong after reading what they offered and were going through. Seems we might be lucky enough to have two stable hero games to play around with! Valiance online im still not 100% with.

Have a nice day!

Well I guess what I said was a flat statement more than a discussion! Haha! So let me ask this, who do you think shows the most promise? Now I am not saying "who will be better" frankly I dont care. To me more hero mmo's with simple classes and deep character customization (TRUE CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION) is a win win especially when they have different takes/power/villains to interact with. I will say my lot is in with CoT but im not against having alot of hero mmos to play.

Have a nice day!

SoH and CoT will be the only

SoH and CoT will be the only successors to release. CoT has more potential because SoH will have a very limited power pool to begin with. SoH wants to release as soon as possible, CoT is developing quality over racing a time schedule. Both are better than VaporWare Online and Heroes and Villains, that much is clear.

As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.

Never even heard of the last

Never even heard of the last two only valiance and the forementioned. But yeah seeing as SoH is using the creators life savings that shows the seriousness and rush.

Have a nice day!

'Heroes and Villains'

'Heroes and Villains' splintered away from the original Phoenix Project because of strong feelings about the best solution to the 'problem' of creating a replacement for CoH. They're still making progress at: http://www.heroes-and-villains.com/phpb/home.php

'Valiance Online' was working on a Fantasy MMO at the time of CoH's demise and decided to swap genres. Phararri used to be a rabid partisan.

'Ship of Heroes' appeared in public just this year.

'Redside' appeared and then vanished, in a shower of curses.

Be Well!

How do energy insects or plant monsters sound? (no secret there, had the early concept art for them shown in several videos)

I can imagen, just spitting out all these ideas and watching many adapt to the ideal version, must be something. Would be cool to see a concept time line for some when we get closer to the finished thing, sorta look back and see how far you have come! Also love that tar corrupted human thing, and most of the humans seemed unique and stand apart which is awesome! Nothing against CoH but come on, hellions and skulls :) lore stand point makes sense but very copy and paste not that i cared i loved it all!

The designs have certainly changed since then, at the very least.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

The reality of working as a group is getting a myriad of concepts to follow the same style and approach. Also the game engine brings along its own set of limits and rules. And then there comes the realization of overlap, and consolidation thereof. For example, we had originally 4 different "mystical guys in robes" groups, and you can see the concepts for all of them in that video. Those 4 groups have since been consolidated into a single group, using the strongest elements of each to make a single, unique entity.

I was skeptical of CoT and pro VO as Fire mentioned but I had a change of heart somewhere down the line. I am all in on CoT, it has the most potential, my opinion. SoH is cool too,I like how they came out swinging. VO just disappoints me on numerous levels, communication, lack of updates, very bad pre-alpha, and the suspect development. Something just seems off about that project compared to the other 3 but I cant quite put my finger on it. Time will tell.

I'm not a fan of a game company (VO) that changed over to a superhero genre, in my opinion, to take advantage of the emotions of the players after the shutdown. That may not have been the real how or why it happened, but it sure as @#$% looked that way.

They didn't change over, they added it to their already sizable index of projects. Other projects of theirs includes Legends of Etherell and Project Gorgon.

There were little bits of lore like that sprinkled all over the various missions. Like how the Hellions, Outcasts and Warriors were partners in a magic item trade/black market, and the Skulls, Trolls and Family were similarly part of a big Supradine ring.

Hmm, good point.

Though thinking a bit more I think effectively all faction groups should have some of that to varying degrees. Utilizing the whole spectrum between 1-2 somewhat disgruntled members to going way worse than how the patrons in CoH red-side were in-fighting would only increase the realism overall imo since no group is perfect in following a common agenda, there will always be someone who wants to do it a bit differently.

You must've read a different writeup than me... or are simply better at reading between the lines.
What I took away from it was, that the Rooks are mostly an unpowered gang with the occasional member having found his personal 'edge'.

Quote:

Combat Information: Rooks aren’t any more dangerous than normal thugs in most cases, though their leaders, known as “Knights” and “Bishops,” are definitely more dangerous than an average, unpowered person. Rarely, you will see a Rook bust out some martial arts or an experimental gadget or spell, but they’re only really dangerous to rookie cops and crimefighters.

More Warriors than Lost.

Hmmmm you're probably right.

I think they'd have more in common with the Hellions than the warriors from what I understand the Edge to be, but in either case we're just talking about humans becoming more than they were.

Since the Rikti were aliens and the Lost were humans that ended up getting more Rikti-like as they gained more affinity with them, then there is probably only one choice left: The Vril. Notice the nod to objects of possible alien origin in the Vril Capechasers writeup. It could get very Mike Mignola if we get 20th century fascists mixed with alien technology/biology. Oh just imagine the experiments we will run across. mwahahaha

I wouldn't write off VO so quickly. They are the only game out there that has officially had a testing phase, albeit a pre-testing phase. They are projecting an official alpha launch this fall. It seems that all 3 of these games are hot competition for each other. I don't know how I feel about it honestly. I don't think there is room for all 3. Let alone 2. Not even factoring in games like DCUO and CO. So which of these existing games will go under, and/or which of the 3 successor games will be a flop? At least one of those scenarios is an unfortunate certainty. I wish people would work together more, rather than saturating the market so much. To be fair, the competition has caused everyone to up their game, overall, but the end outcome may not be so rosy. Hopefully CO and DCUO will go the way of CoH, to make room for these new games. That would be the best possible outcome, imo.

They called it "pre-alpha" for a reason. Again, I wouldn't write it off, especially given who is working on it.

As long as we are speculating

As long as we are speculating:

Heroes and Villains has been in development for just under 4 years and has only presented concept art, some lore and a lot of blog posts about development. This doesn't mean they haven't done any development but without some more concrete evidence I have little faith.

Ship of Heroes sprang up late 2016 (November?) and have not to my knowledge revealed when their development started. They appeared with a polished look, slick website and a whole bunch of promises. Since then they released a bunch of videos that, to me, show they are taking every short cut to release a game. They do have game development experience but from what I have been able to find that experience is largely mobile games. The combat system they are showing off seems to be mostly using stock game engine tools and the costumes they go into depth about are pretty much just texture swaps. This game will probably get released in some form eventually but I have strong doubts it will be anything more than generic game play wrapped in stock engine mechanics/graphics.

Valiance Online has been in development for around 4 years now. They have been pretty transparent with their development and have had a bunch of issues that have slowed progress. Now, they currently have a combat system that is close to completion, a mostly developed UI and chat system, power effects that are not just game engine dials, a character creation system almost completed, graphics aspects that seem done (lighting, shading , ect) and a working AI. The game still has quite a bit of work left to do but this is one of the two I think will be released as a fleshed out game.
The problem for me with this game is I don't like the lore or the way it looks.

City of Titans has been around for around 4 years as well. They have been more tight lipped in regards to development than Valiance Online but have still been more open than most games. Most of the development videos have been closer to tech demos than game demos but recently this has changed. They too had early setbacks in development. They seem to be very far along in development. Out of all the projects they have the most fleshed out (and IMO interesting) lore. Of all the hero games, CoH is the only one that has said it will include unique game play elements like the leads system, aesthetic decoupling, alignment/reputation and so on.

In the end I think SoH, VO and CoT will all get released but only VO and CoT will have any staying power.

At this point it seems that even if SoH and/or VO manage to launch they both come off to me as very "shallow" in terms of game mechanics and lore. Basically they'll probably cover the minimum MMORPG bases in terms of "create a character and go kill things" but it's hard to say if they'll go in depth in terms of customization or potential end game longevity.

Bottomline SoH and VO might get launched and they might even be fun games to play. But something tells me that after a few hours you'll be asking yourself "Is that it?". Of all the successor projects CoT seems like the only one that'll keep us hooked and motivated the play for the long haul.

This is my opinion on the matter as well. Out of all the games CoT truly seems to be taking the game mechanics in interesting directions, and I like their lore and worldbuilding more than the others. It will be interesting to see what the other projects can come up with, but most of my focus is on CoT.

Yeah - their kickstarter failed horribly and their website expired. I think that one is DoA.

You are right, they did have a testing phase, but it was really really really bad. If you push out a crappy product, but you are the first to do it what did that accomplish? I have been following these guys for a long time and have been an advocate, I did not write them off over night. An accumulation of poor developmental, false dates, over-promises, lack of communication, and a very poor prealpha phase, not to mention very poor alpha videos contributed to this.

I do not buy anything these people say. They lack transparency, what they are doing now is simply to save face because they realized SoH and CoT were passing them by. They were comfy with CoT showing all those cartoon strips and concepts, but now that they have been hinting the meaty stuff, VO feels they have to do something. What made you change your heart now? CoT had transparency since I can remember. Why do you even need to have better communication? That should have been crowdfunding rule #1. Why would you leave out the people who you are trying to pry money from?

But on the subject of SoH, here is some news I found snooping around their page

Quoted:

I thought you guys would want to get an update. What's happening right now?

Actually quite a lot is happening. :)

First, we're adding a couple of guys to help us push forward on our goals. Specifically we're working towards a milestone where we can let our community begin Alpha testi our character creator in a few months. And we're working toward to the larger goal of having escorted Alpha tests by the end of 2017. And we have a few more things planned. In the shorter term:

1. We are about ready to show the Sci-fi environment below the ship, where the crew work and enemies lurk. This will be a big deal, and we'll be looking for community feedback. The rooms, corridors and spaces that you are going to see will be template material for instanced missions, so this is a big deal. Once we get it, we can duplicate it, rearrange it, change it, etc.

2. We're working on a way to showcase the offensive powersets we've designed and to discuss powers more specifically. We have a lot of them, and they are all different.

3. We're taking another look at crowd control and status effects. As time has gone by we've been adding elements of this to Ship of Heroes so that we can deliver the complexity of powers that makes the game fun. We're going to have new news on this front in the next couple of weeks.

There is a lot of progress to discuss. But we like to show progress, more than to write about it. Stay tuned!

A test of the character creator within a few months and private testing by years end is more reassuring than soon. I could be wrong about VO, but at some point you have to accept people for what they have been giving you. If it moves like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. VO is a duck.

I will give VO credit in this regard, they have had a character creator out for a long time now, but it was bad, like the rest of anything associated with VO.

As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.

This is a perfectly valid critique. I am personally wowed by SoH more than anyone, and CoT comes in second, just because I like the setting and lore of SoH more. I have said else where that VO and CoT were tied for second, but your analysis has made me reconsider. That said, I think it would be unfair to say that VO will not release, but you are right that what they release will probably not be that good. Time will tell.

I do like the lighting in one picture. That's not a stock use of lighting and the volumetrics are solid. Composition of the scene does not impress me but that same lighting could be used in a damp cave or sewer setting to create a very creepy atmosphere.

Like everyone else here, I

Like everyone else here, I have been riding this nag (or perhaps more accurately, these four nags) for half a decade.

They each have strengths and weaknesses. I am impatient for all four of them to release in their final commercial form. I don't know which one I'm going to like best, probably whichever one does the best job with the Mastermind replacement.

I just want a functional, well-developed Beast Mastery/Natural Affinity Mastermind/Operator/Commander/Whatever with a solid AI and reliable pathing. Is that too much to ask?

Apparently, it is...

SoH vs CoT is fitting, because VO is a mess right now. I guess that livestream aint happening.

Wow, I am so surprised. Shocked, flabbergasted, VO is not one to mislead the public with dates or not give the supports transparency in regards to development news.

The SoH new video looks awesome, they never cease to impress me. Well done. It is fun to watch these two projects get closer and closer towards a release. And of course VO who serves as the comedy, they never cease to make me laugh. We all need a laugh from time to time.

I don't play Blade and Soul because I will never again pass money to NC Soft, but the videos I have seen of their characters in action do not impress me. Not for a superhero game.

Just my two cents.

No, I meant character art style. :p Also, that second outfit is not skimpy :p Next, the character creator is awesome and CoH's character creator was one of it's selling points, with imo only B&S really matching (and surpassing) CoH in that area. However, B&S lacked the outfit choices of CoH.

They've all got awesome architecture and monsters, I'll give them that. The characters look plastic. That twintail with the drum-fed Gatling looks like a bad outcome from the Random Costume button. So many conflicting anime tropes, all in one.

Poharan. I like her. She's a funny NPC. :p

Love the looks of their characters and the gloss on the B&S characters can be turned up or down. I never thought CoH's looked realistic. I just felt they too worked well for the comic book super hero feel. CO's for example, to me, feels like a super hero cartoon feel.

Meh, Both B&S and BDO

Meh, Both B&S and BDO characters look fine. I personally would prefer a more western aesthetic to them just because that was the style I grew up seeing in comics. But I am not opposed to anime influences.
I said it before, I mostly just want CoT to create their own style overall. It can be influenced however they want but be unique.

Hehehe I'm just poking fun :D. But I think you are missing one game with a better character creator (in variety) and that is Champions Online. A shame about the game it self but meh character had quite the selection. Also BnS character creator is good with scales but not really customization. I would say black desert even beats them but I also agree with the non compliment of them all looking alike too. Granted that's the fantasy the games were in but still... :o

I'm glad you enjoy the look of the characters. Seriously. I, however, do not. Especially not for a superhero game. The outrageous body proportions (reed thin limbs, especially!), the overdone Alice in Wonderland look to the hairstyles and dresses, the giant anime eyes and worst of all (for me) the oversize weapons! These things work within the context of Blade and Soul, but that does not make them universal.

If, perchance, the Character Creator for City of Titans includes these anime-style options, that would be a good thing. But shifting the overall art style of the game in that direction would chase away far more Western players than it attracted.

Otaku-life is neither as popular nor as widely accepted as certain advocates would like the rest of us to believe, not even in Japan.

This is my take on this as well. I wouldn't mind if the CoT costume creator allowed us to roughly "simulate" the style of something like B&S but I don't think I'd want that to be the core artistic aesthetic. I like "anime-styled" things but that style should be OPTIONAL in CoT not the foundation the entire game is based on.

The oversized weapons always drove me nuts in CoH, too, like pistols as big as someone's head, if not bigger.

Definitely. And I, for one, am getting tired of the hikkikomori-saves-the-world shows. Anime and manga, for all their good parts, still spend too much time pandering to the basest parts of their audience.

I can't get behind the concept of that game. It just sounds too odd to me for a superhero game. If they called heroes and villains something different or more futuristic-like then I could see it more.

Although even then spandex in spaceships still looks weird.

I think the whole concept of being on a space ship makes it feel less like being a superhero and more like being in a holodeck program, which, feels off considering they seem to copying a lot of the CoH formula (as opposed to innovating the formula, like CoT is doing).

Turns out all your heroic deeds were some dream in a holopod that you as a rich spoiled person paid for to feel like a 'good guy' :D

Have a nice day!

If the game ever gets shut down, THIS would be the way to end it...!

Nah, if SoH (or City of Heroes... on a boat, in SPACE!) goes live, my first character is going to be Professor Moriarty.

Hmm... Alternative names

Hmm... Alternative names for heroes in space? Since "Guardians of the Galaxy" is already taken...

Generation One
Infinite Sky
Into the Black
March to the Milkyway
Price of Infinity
Home Among the Stars
Heroes Among the Stars
Seeking Safety
Search for Greatness

So on and so forth. Given enough coffee I could go on like this for hours.

Didn't look over it all but from what I remember that looks to be exactly the same as from their failed Kickstarter.

Realism. SoH fails there.

I prefer realism, what is CoT aiming for anyway.

Ship of Heroes just doesn't sound right to me. Why would there be a ship full of heroes and bad guys? I get it that they wanted something similar to COH but I just cant get past the name.

It's not just the name, but its consequences... it's the limit to the imagination forced into the player, everything gets ultra-limited imho.

Let's play with fantasy, the game is ready and I'm creating the 1st character: I would have serious difficulties in creating a "Doc.Strange" there, nor fight demons in some forgotten place of the world, because there is no world. If I wanted to create an hero with an origin similar to Superman, where did he fall? In the ship? Found by space-farmers? What about Batman or Daredevil, will those protect a piece of the ship instead of a dark city? Could you imagine a Punisher with a pistol getting around and punishing thugs in a futuristic space ship? Even one with citizens trying to fake a normal life, still they're supposed to live in a context where the science got that far up there already.

No ancient locations (it's a space ship), no mountains, no sea or docks... even if they put some in some part of the ship, we all know it will be a fake mountain and for sure it cannot be that ancient, it will be human-made. How can serious developers think about a Superhero game and get themselves and the players trapped so much in a well defined science-context-only where everything else will never fit in well.

Really, everything in that game seems rushed to me, from the name, the story, the game it self. I think it's perfect for the impatient guys who just want to play another game (and uninstall it), but imho there are "DC Universe Online" and "Champions Online" ready for that purpose if you need to play a mmo with superheroes with acceptable customization, gameplay and graphics.

Personally I don't want "just a game asap" or I'd be there already, and SoH starts with worse expectations compared to DCUO or CO, how could I ever follow it. Their game should be really perfect to make me change my mind and still the name and location would leave me a bad taste of fake-world, imposed limits and lack of foresee from their devs.
I want a decent long-lasting game related to super heroes back to the marked ("decent" means several things, it means the devs created it with a plan in mind, with City of Heroes in mind, with comics in mind, understanding we want an universe-house back, a game that must remain solid for us for long times).
Not just good to make trailers (abusing DC names and action gameplay for the sole purpose to attract peoples and not doing much to keep them); not just copying City of Heroes character creator but completely lacking a direction (like Champions Online, was it even a mmorpg or a single-player game? Since you couldn't even share the missions the first months! You couldn't party at all, and it didn't even make sense to struggle to do that since the tanks role etc., the massive mechanics were absent or wrong).
They tried to fill an economic gap, not our hearts.

Instead when I read these devs here (City of Titans) I read my self, they really know what to take from City of Heroes and what to improve or even delete, they really took time to take decisions first, than you make the game, with a clear plan in mind and an open future.
The only reason why we paid the money and these devs keep paying their personal time building the game, is that we all disliked CO and DCUO in some way or another, and we still miss a massive superhero-themed home, because it's the only kind of mmorpg where you could be anything and be in-context with everybody else there. Ship of Heroes just destroyed that freedom with the name already and therefore made already redundant (for me) to even check if they get the massive part right where Champions O. failed, for example.

They should have called it

They should have called it Journey of Heroes instead.

Sounds less ridiculous and still connects the name as to them being on a ship.
