Soo, Totally OOC at this point, just curious if anyone else wants to fiddle with the idea of a steampunk group, ideally neutral but against the already established steampunk pirate group mentioned in Lore. Also based in a very big strange looking steam ship, from another dimension.
I'm totally cool with any weird thing anyone wants to put together, I had what most called Altaholism, or Altitis. So, I wanted to play a brainy professor type who came over all by himself or with a ship, probably by accident. One armed guy with a lot of strange wonky tesla based technology, a robotic arm and a scottish accent... I kind of like scottish accents...
Anyone else interested in steampunking?
I'm in!

So, it would be a Steampunk team in Titan City and they would be the nemesis (no, not Nemesis...) of the Aether Pirates while remaining neutral to all other factions? And they'd be from another dimension? Hrrrm, the Aether Privateers? ;-)
I might be convinced to participate.

Oh good, Two's good. Aether Privateers, that's funny. Yeah, I think I like the idea of them being a wee bit loony and strange, more in it to make and do crazy things, get into things they shouldn't discover things that shouldn't be discovered, stop people from putting Cthulu in a steampunk pokeball, but certainly against the Aether Pirates. I was just stating my own origin if others want to be from another dimension I'm all for it. I like the idea of having a ship to wander around in and run amok in. With a crew full of little green men, and the whole thing run by some kind of martian rock.
I have no idea how he got here, and likely neither will he.
The character I have in mind is Aaron Thorn, who was once a professor at Oxford (Exeter College, wasn't yet part of oxford in his time/space), then fought in the second martian world war. After surviving he returned to Europe, stopped a few insane nobles plotting things, came into the possession of the ship and befriended the little green martians. He lost his arm in the war and built a new one, and a bunch of crazy tech to go with it. Generally he prefers to dig for things when he's not having to shoot at things.
Oh, Aether Private Detectives? Then they can sound official without actually being official. "APD, We'd like to take a look at this." No one will question them if they've all got strange accents, badges and a good acronym.
*Digs in his list of alts* Hmm interesting I never made a steampunk alt before. Not sure if I would join or not.

The cards win. Nicolette Diane Jones, a dabbler in things arcane and/or mechanical, accidently ejected herself from her home continuum, was rescued by an erratic time-traveler, given one of the time-traveler's spare pistols, and dropped off with Mr. Thorn.
The pistol, BTW, is a real ammo hog, having three rotating barrels and using an open cylinder that feeds from a magazine...It is a Darling pistol, though. ^_^

Okay, so the dimension that Thorn is coming from sounds, IMO, like you're basing it on The War of the Worlds. What I'm curious about is if Thorn's dimension is in the same year as ours? Also, how long have martian-rock burning, steam-powered engines been the primary source of power?
Putting yourself in another persons shoes emotionally is something that everyone has to experience eventually. It's part of learning to be a human being. Roleplayers do it for fun.
I probably won't participate due to time constraints, so feel free to disregard my opinion, but I think you could probably get much more fun and mileage out of a science-only concept, since working around the technical limitations of analog technology can lead to some interesting devices. Magic in technology can turn into Handwavium way too fast if you aren't technical about it.

I'm not too worried about that. As a Smart Girl once said, "Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from Science!"

Yeah, War of the worlds is a heavy influence. Honestly it doesn't burn the martian rock, it's... complicated... Martians invaded by started with meteor strikes that ended up being screwed up by mages, which as I see it are people who can be really good at manipulating quantum physics. In a purely scientific environment steampunk sadly breaks down...
In my idea gears are still an important mechanism as is steam, but it's burnable because they basically use martian tech to split water into hydrogen and oxygen to burn it. Turn motors, as well as a couple other "Martian rock" hand wavey things... Though not entirely impossible, one's based on the ability to vaporize hydrogen and oxygen from water with a form of tesla coil, made really small and crystaline by the marians. So run current through it and you've got steam that burns and combusts to create a clean and 'perpetual' steam engine. The other martian rock and a lot of the 'science' behind the steamship is like this, the ship moves by magnetic levitation.
His arm feels by martian rock creating psychic wavey things that makes phantom limb pain feel the impact of other electromagnetic fields into it, basically anything solid enough to feel. It's all a bit hand wavey, though I spent awhile analyzing parts of what I could explain. One martian rock, the orange kind, is a super conductor, essentially it creates electricity when compressed, but also sort of bounces back, so constant pressure is bad.
They basically use this and rotary motors to make electricity and can't use iron because the martian rock created temporary mass magnetization... I.. Could just show you my background material for Thorn, I wrote a lot once... It doesn't all explain everything.
Edit: I realized I never directly answered the question you posed so... Here's the timeline of where his timeline deviates to his present day.
Timeline
This is most likely, the shortest and fastest way for me to describe the steam punk world I've designed for the character.
1800: The Second Coalition accept Napoleons offer of Peace, and Napoleon holds to his agreement, though with a firmly more difficult trade and treaty relationship between the nations involved, and Napoleon himself. France was allowed to keep Egypt. His advisors as emperor of France keep him, wisely, out of anymore conflicts with Europe.
1823: Napoleon Bonaparte's dies, his son, Napoleon II (11) abdicates his throne taking the life of a scholar, leaving his uncle the throne.
1838: 3 large asteroids arrive and collide with the upper atmosphere at an angle with the earth. Skipping across the atmosphere large chunks of debris hit the earth but the odd make up of the rocks seems to cause most of the debris and ash to fall, for whatever reason, the Debris formed rings around the planet, repelled by the magnetic field of the earth, the stuff that got past it landed rather hard and caused earth quakes across the globe. The largest chunk landing off the coast of France.
1840: France Corners the market on Dirigibles. As the technology advances over the next decade, the ships become larger and stronger, quickly replacing sea travel.
1860: The French along with Great Brittain and a coalition of anti-slave nations placed a trade embargo upon the southern united states.
1864: Martians invade the earth, walkers are sent from the mothership, located over Washington D.C. as well as thousands of other regions of the world.
1866: France releases all monetary claim to the designs of their air ships, prototypes and other works of Napoleon the second(Now going by Franz). With it the designs for the Vetruvian.
1868: Aaron Thorn is born to the Thorn family, a well known noble family of English descent.
1871: The Vetruvian lead the war against the martians, the final stand happening over the Atlantic Cost of America. The Florida penninsula becomes an island as the force of the crash and their final weapon, a warp device meant to detonate the earths core, for mining purposes.
1881: Aaron Thorn is informed by his family that he'll be forced into a monastic life, a scholar.
1882: Aaron Thorn is mentored by Franz, son of napoleon while going to Exeter College in Oxford. There Aaron became an expert in Steam engines as well as the applications for Martian Alloys.
1890: Aaron Thorn, after 8 years of learning at Exeter College is let go from a teaching position, for sleeping with the Headmasters daughter.
1891: Aaron loses his arm in the early stages of the MWWII, replaces it with the robotic one.
1891: The Second Martian Invasion occurs, the fighting goes on for 6 months in wilderness and the western region of the united states. The Union denies any Martian Presence until August of that year, when a fleet of steam ships, lead by the Vetruvian. The battle raged across the united states for 3 months, ending over Oklahoma where the Vetruvian collided with the Martian mother ship. 2 escape pots survive the final battle, Oklahoma is destroyed by the impact of the Martian Mother ship.
1892: The world is peaceful in the aftermath of the war.
Okay I think I got an idea. The character be a Scotchman and Engineer / machinist / repair fellow. (think Scotty from star trek.) He's not to big on magic or even the fancy Martian rocks but he keeps the equipment going. He also wears a copper/brass mask hiding his face and always has gloves on. These he can take off and does when in his quarters alone. Reason is he was on another ship where the steam line ruptured and he got blasted by superheated steam so he's scarred. Hmm might be interesting if the mask has some kind of lenses that lets him see like Geordi La forge. Also kind of a tech fellow who tends to collect nick nacks just in case (like explosives).
He also if need packs two pistols and a crack shot with a long shot rifle.
So you think he would work?

I really hope they're not getting more energy out of this than they put in, unless the rock gets used up or degrades with use. Also, good for purifying water if you have a way to clean off the deposits of salt or whatever.
Sounds like the piezoelectric effect used in some lighters...
Did this come out right, or is something missing? "to not fall" perhaps?
So, did this stave off the U.S. Civil War, since it might cause the Southrons to think that they couldn't expect help from Europe (something they hoped for in our history)? Perhaps it encouraged the building of rail lines to ship goods north to disguise their origins? And did slavery still get abolished in the U.S.?
Overall, maybe Miss Jones did get returned to the proper continuum after all...

No, that would be impossible, sadly. :( It produces quite a bit of energy from the same substance over and over, burning the same hydrogen and oxygen over and over. I honestly never thought of how the rock might hold up to it. I imagine there would be some decay but also that the substance was engineered by the lil green martian a long time ago. So while it probably slowly 'sloughs off' green dust it can be reconstituted by heating it and adding a few elements that it needs to function. Gold and carbon notably.
There's also lots of this stuff on his earth and the martians designed it to grow more on its own under the right conditions. Their technology is also designed to basically 'grow' off of the crystals for some reason my martians are very fungi oriented...
Exactly the same sort of effect, but with much bigger results. It would be akin to every atom in the orange dust cell releasing one electron then pulling a new one in. Atleast I think that's how it works. I'm not a physicist so sometimes I get the interpretation of how wrong lol.
No... that was a thought collision from when I wrote it...
1838: Three large asteroids arrive and collide with the upper atmosphere at an angle with the earth. Skipping across the atmosphere large chunks of debris hit the earth, however the odd make up of the rocks seems to cause most of the debris to collect high in the atmosphere for whatever reason. Somehow repelled by the magnetic field of the earth the Debris formed rings around the planet. The chunk that got past it landed rather hard and caused earth quakes across the globe. The largest chunk landing off the coast of France.
I made a big typo when I wrote that.
Basically I tried and failed to say something funny happened when the earth killer asteroids would have hit. Allusion to the mages messing with stuff and making something big happen.
Hrm, looking back I'm not sure what I forgot in the timeline, but now I think it was much more than I initially imagined. Basically, the south Seceded in his timeline, just like here. Same reasons as in this timeline, but the result was that they became incapable of getting much trade from and to anywhere in europe. Then the martian war hit and while the world united against the martians, twice. The south after that was still ignored and actually has a lot of martian hate and some money too. Slavery was abolished basically everywhere else a while before it happened in the US, I guess I failed to mention some important things that still happened and things that got diverted. I didn't think of it all heh...
What continuum?
That's useful. So if you can replicate those conditions, you can farm it.
The wizards did it!
Might want to change the date, while Lincoln was elected in '60, he didn't take office until March of '61, and while the secession did happen before that, the war didn't start until April 12th. The South thought Europe needed their cotton worse than it turned out they did. An active embargo might have shortened the war.
OTOH, U.S. was rather late in the abolition game. UK in 1833, France and Denmark-Norway in 1848 (1794 in the French Empire if you don't count Guadalupe and Martinique), with abolition of the trade in slaves somewhat earlier.
So, was the Union restored?
Up in post # 8, I was thinking that my character Miss Jones wasn't originally from the same continuum (time-line) as your Mr. Thorn. But now I'm thinking there's no reason not to have her from the same time-line. Perhaps born around twenty-five years before they came to Titan City. Assuming that they did come to Titan City...

Hmm, I hadn't thought of how long the south could last without it. I imagined the union was still split, and perhaps splitting further. I have more source information about the martians and rocks if you'd like to see. ::Shrug:: I probably need to edit those too.
Not sure when the embargo should occur cause I'm fairly certain I lined it up close to the time of the civil war. Which caused the war to never get resolved. The south is getting by now by lots of piracy, martian do-dads and selling what little they have to other unsavory types offering new types of slaves. I never really expected anyone to play from that timeline, but it would be nice.
Edit:
I don't know if this idea is stalled or not, but I thought I'd attempt a wakie. This is all the material I made for steampunk scene that Aaron Thorn is a part of, as previously mentioned parts of it have been fixed or messed with. I also included more about the character I'd like to play.

Statistics:
Name: Aaron S. Thorn
Age: 24
DoB: September 5, 1868 (Currently 1892)
Weight: 165
Height: 6'1"
Description:
Aaron Thorn has blond hair cut long and pulled to a tail at the back of his neck and bright green eyes, behind thin hexagonal, gold-rimmed glasses. he wears a tan linen shirt and a ragged looking green vest with gold embroidered Fibonacci spirals all over it. He wears a pair of pants well suited for his chosen vocation, khaki pants that tuck into his thick brown leather boots.
On his right hip is a gun that looks nothing like a pistol, in fact it isn't. Most would call it a Lightning Hand Cannon, which is entirely accurate. The barrel is two and a half inches wide with multiple ports exposing electrodes that emit a large bolt of electricity.
Also on his right side if the prosthetic arm, looking quite a bit like a copper and brass armored piece upon first glance, though closer inspection reveals to the eye an intricate mechanism consisting of gears, metallic 'bones' and glowing green tubes. The surface of the forearm and finger armor seem to have a pearlescent, translucent sheen, tinged slightly green. The arm is quite articulate and proportioned perfectly to Aaron's original arm, though slightly bulkier in circumference.
Brief history:
Aaron Thorn was born to the noble family of Thorn in the Isle of Skye, though some in the queens court called it a miracle that the 'poofer' Baron Archibald Thorn and the 'queen's witch' Lady Jamila Thorn, ever produced a child. He was mentored by Franz Bonaparte, a close family friend for all of his life. Bullied by his older sibling who thought might was right.
He is the second son, and was relegated to a life in a monastery, or a scholar; he chose to become a scholar. He studied at Exeter College in Oxford, obtaining degrees in Engineering, Archaeology and Occult Studies, and taught private lessons for little over 6 months, before he was expelled for sleeping with the deans daughter. He journeyed to America where many second sons were trying to make their way in the world, there he found much more than he bargained for.
It was there that the martian walkers awoke; it was there that Aaron gained experience in hardship and suffering. It was there that his right arm was disintegrated and he was forced to cobble together a prosthetic, with the help of the ships doctor. He was swept into the war against the second Martian Invasion. He was among the 6 escape pods full of crew and family that escaped the Vetruvian when it's captain went mad and flew the ship into the cerebral core of the techno-organic martian mothership.
The Icarus:
The Icarus was a ship commissioned from Franz Bonaparte by the Baron Thorn for the elder Thorn brother, Alder. Though due to keeping company with men their mother disapproved of, the ship was given to Aaron, who was told to stay safe. He did not, he quickly took a tour of the world in the ship. He went to the Airship factories in Seoul and Hiroshima, fitted the ship with a few weapons and discovered a few things.
The ship generally resembles a stubby boat. It's 95 feet tall from the bottom of the keel to the top of the dome where the bridge sits and the mast ends. There are four floors inside, the first accessible by the front hatch which opens at the center seem in the uneven hexagon shaped hull. The cargo hold is 30 feet tall, while the other floors are only 11 The floors holding a great deal of mechanism and tubing.
The mast acts as an automated ladder or auto-lad to quickly move from one level to another. The level directly above the cargo hold is the crew quarters, Galley and dining area, the auto-lad lets one off in a hexagonal antechamber. The galley on the left, dining area at the front of the ship, while four crew quarters lay at the back of the ship. From the galley food can be sent to the staff and officer dining. This section also has access to some weapons.
The third floor is officers quarters, with 7 elegantly designed rooms as well as the officer dining area which looks capable of seating atleast fifty guests. Above the officer section is Engineering where most of the ships running goes on. From this level the 'pontoons' on either side of the ship can be accessed via thing walkway. This area includes research areas as well as general maintenance.
Finally there's the bridge and viewing deck, stretching the length of the ship is a strong oak deck that surrounds the ship. The main weapons of the ship are operated from the top deck. The bottom of the keel seem to have strange looking devices similar to the devices in the 'pontoons'.
I thought that if we wanted to have common backgrounds then there's the material I suggested, if not I had this as an idea for how to bring together a cast of strange steampunk individuals:
Basically Thorn is trying something brilliantly stupid with his ship, he breaks something, possibly the world and has no clue why or how, but gets sent to Titan City, in the future and in a drastically different timeline. This could lead to others from related dimensions feeling the dimensional 'quakes' and slipping through the cracks. Or some other strange pseudo science.
Really not sure about the Aether pirates, having gotten much detail about them... Hope they get more info out cause steampunk is a big thing for me >.<
Nicolette Diane Jones
Born in Cardiff, Wales, 1866, to Malcolm Henry and Marie Duquesne Jones.
Studied Engineering and Archaeology at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire, 1884-1889, left under mysterious circumstances.
Most recently (1892) seen in Kyoto, boarding a train bound for Hiroshima.
According to one Fujita Gorō, an officer of the police in Kyoto, Miss Jones had been of assistance in rescuing the kidnapped son of a local industrialist, and had heard that a British Airship was in Hiroshima.

Been rethinking my character for this. Hmm Could the Icarus been attacked by Pirates in that reality and the "Brilliant" Foolish dimension hop was an attempt to escape?
I ask because it dawned on me that I might like my fellow to be a Buccaneer type swash buckler. Still full face mask and never showing any skin, heck he might even been scarred during that attack idea and the "incident" resulted in his burns.
That idea could explain that there no real way back. The Dimensional jump was a result of the experiment and damage done to the equipment at a key time. Repairing the equipment and replicating the chaotic element from the damage would be nearly impossible, not to mention no real understanding of how to reverse it.
Thought long term RP could be the crew traveling through other realities trying to return home. Just an idea.

Personal rules of good roleplay

2.) If it goes as planned it's not good RP
@ Foradain: Looks good to me, I like the idea... Did... I incidentally pick up a pun in her name? N. D. Jones? Haha... Maybe that's just me fitting a joke in the wrooong place.
@RottenLuck: That sounds feasible, I always like the swashbuckly types. I don't like total closure from their home dimension, but I do like the notion that their means of traveling is damaged or destroyed. Time and effort plus trial and error should definitely part of that resolution.
Though thinking about the mechanism for how they would get there makes me think that whatever they were doing, they probably weren't making a travel mechanism.
I like to play around with technobabble in my head, so forgive me if this goes a bit doc brown for a second and makes no sense. (Marty?!?!) Basically I think they were doing something to track or reshape the quantum resonance of the martian rocks to see if they could make or change them. Whatever they do ends up instead of making a tiny vibration in just the rock, makes a huuuuge vibration across the fabric of space-time. This causes them to sort of 'jump' off of the string they were on that would represent their dimension and land on another. Since vibrations create waves, waves push forward, the power of the waves forced them forward.
Maybe they were trying out one or Aaron's new and "Fantastic" (his words, not others.) inventions that was suposed to make some funny bit of martian rock, that Aaron thinks could just win their fight. Something else happens, they still make a big chunk of new martian rock. maybe silver? I dunno, we'd have to think up the properties of that martian rock too, but it's the applied phlebotonym to getting home.
Yeah I like the idea the equipment is damage. Forces them to stay awhile till it's repaired. Also interact with the native population to get parts.
As for the ship itself... So when the martian rock started reacting it changed the quantum vibration of a given area. That's a lot of power out, so the silver rock could be like Uranium when it's decayed to lead. Or the martian elements electrons were affected. So instead of an atom with say 20 electrons it now has 4.

Nope, it's in the right place. ^_^
N. D. Jones was how she initially enrolled at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire; rumors that her father was related to the Principal who allowed her to remain after her gender was revealed to the staff are completely unfounded. In any event, women were openly admitted to the University the next year (with the opening of Aberdare Hall), and Miss Jones was no longer an oddity. Or at least not as much of an oddity. Her friends from that time may still call her N. D., or "Endy".
Not to be confused with the Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming, nor with N. Diana Jones, a name under consideration by my brother when we were brainstorming for names for a team of Pulp Heroes for CO. He decided to go with "Emily Airheart", with wind powers, instead. ^_^
With regard to "getting home": Miss Jones has met a person who claimed to be a time traveler, and after arriving in Titan City she may become aware of a pistol called the "Dardick" (see the link up in post # 8) that was developed in the 1950s, which would tend to support this claim, since it shares many design features with the "Darling Pistol" she was given by the alleged time traveler. So she'll be fairly sure that it is at least theoretically possible.

True, that makes quite a bit of sense, though with interdimensional travel there's no telling how energy and matter would react, since arguably anything outside of a given quanta is going to not technically be physical. Though, the martian rocks are all alloys with quantum mechanical functions. We see a rock, in the upper dimensions that rock turns 'gears' which do things on the lower levels...
Uhhh I made a tangent, however yes. I think that's a sufficient analogy for what happens to the rock they're using in the device. I sort of imagined this part of it working a lot like a sling shot, time and space are x and y, and when they did what they did they basically flick a giant string theory elastic band and catapulted themselves through multiple space times.
They likely left some evidence behind. Does any body have any info on the Aether Pirates? I haven't.
Except this?

No, seriously though when and where should we start this, I imagine a crash landing, but someplace not awful. A controlled crash landing, like in the bay or something.
They're going about their business, repairing the ship and raided by the TCPD, since they're a steampunk ship crashing in Titan City, must be Aether Pirates, even though I don't think they would fly a flag... Maybe they should? What flag would they fly?
Either one of the British flags of the time appropriate for private vessels, or one with Thorne's family arms.

That might get them some problems too, but I do like the idea of them flying a black flag with a green celtic knot pentacle made of thorns... o.o I think that's a good idea, maybe a different color than black, blue on green doesn't suit well IMO...

And yes, all the martians have been named by Aaron, some kind of fungus. I don't know if the rest of the crew knows how to tell them apart?

I'd also like to give credit to the Alliteration Agency for helping me as well.
One more thing!: The martians are all roughly the same height, they have somewhat dry skin, like the outside of store bought mushrooms but no pealing stuff, ew, that would mean they're sick. Their eyes are kind of the consistancy and appearance of those those slimy looking blackish mushrooms. They're all wearing silver jumpsuits that don't cover their hands, feet or heads. They vary in colors from green to beige, but mostly greens. They are kinda creepy... None of them come up above mid thigh?
What I figure is Aaron Thorn saved Jebediah's life or at least was the one that made the mask that lets him see again. Like before he was badly scarred by superheated steam, just now he was a navy officer fighting pirates instead of being one. So now he works for Thorn.

Ahh, that makes sense, Jeb and Jed, that's going to be awkward but doable. Atleast we don't have a full on "Darryl and other Darryl" Sort of situation, funny.
As for Jebediah, I think that sounds like a plausible background. Aaron made a living after his time in America producing prostheses and if he wasn't there he would jump at the opportunity.

I'm thinking that despite the prolonged nature of the secession, the Union would continue to claim the original Confederate States. Looking at the maps, it seems the states added between 1865 and 1890 were mostly northern territories, not southern, and so more likely to be added to the Union and not the Confederacy.

Ohhh Okay I literally just saw that x.x
Hey! Going to try and join in the fun! Quick OC profile:
Name: Aurélie Lisette Tolbert
Nickname: Mouse
Gender: F
Age: 19
Appearance: Blonde curly hair, gray eyes, rosy skin, 4'11", moves like a dancer, native French. Wears goggles with colored lenses, tech gauntlets for abilities, boots with metal soles, rides a hoverboard.
Role: Research/Engineering
Class: Battle-Mage
Abilities: "Quantum Wizardry" (Cold / Lightning / Steam / Magnetism / Illusion. Science- and tech-based magic.)
~Sol
Aurélie's board functions the same as the ship, just miniature. Also, when LeadWanderer was helping me brainstorm ideas for steampunk 'magic', we came across the idea of Tesla Bombs/Grenades. We agreed they'd likely be standard issue, so feel free to use the idea. :)
~Sol
Wolfram = Tungsten (chemical symbol W). Armor piercing.
Tround = Triangular Round, funky cartridge shape for use in Dardick-style automatic revolvers (or revolving automatics ^_^).

As always, everybody but the captain of the main ship, are expendable, feel free to make them go boom. I could handle all of it but there's probably a whole swarm of the little buggers!
Also those tungsten rounds are liable to hit extreme temperatures and work as tracers since tungsten is fairly combustible, I may not understand the chemical properties of tungsten fully, right?
Also, had thoughts that maybe a past enemy of Thorn and Co may have made it over to Titan-verse and have a minor seership capacity. (Current idea is that an individual known as Count Cray, who was known by the crew for experimenting on the emerging colonies of Amure Leopard, tsushima and european Lynx mutated colonies. (Essentially the orange rock and prominent green rock mist caused these species of felines to mutate to walk upright and started communicating, he's also known for using the dust as a snuff, as well as having the only known sample of Black Rock.)) Basically this guy has a beef and tipped the Aether Pirates to the arrival of 'extremely advanced steam technology' Thoughts?
Sorry on the tracers, tungsten resists oxidation. OTOH,tungsten is so hard Nicole would not use it as a rifle (or rifled pistol) projectile without jacketing it in something softer, like steel, copper, magnesium... Making them tracer trounds would be easy.
Count Cray sounds nasty. Bring him on!

Jeb wins the thread for the week with the line "CRAY, YOU SUMBITCH!" I probably shouldn't have but reading that aloud in a Texan accent made me seriously lol... I dunno why Texas accents are funny to me...
Also, sounds awesome Rotten, gotta love beam swords!
Count Cray seems pretty cool!
Quick theory-question time, though: Aurélie's magnetic shield (metal-repelling, though not control) vs Count Cray's metalokinesis. Who has the advantage, there? Thinking Count Cray, but just to be sure...

They're basically two opposing forces working against one another. While he can only do it with a gesture of his hand, her boards force, like Jebs jet pack, would likely be powerful enough to at the very least escape Cray's pull. On the other hand, Cray is biological, while her board is not, if she could keep a constant force against his the strain on his body may force him to fail, where as her board is meant to have variable magnetic field strength so she can manipulate her altitude... It's hard to say without them playing it out, I'm always a fan of letting the characters duke it out and see how things work, it's all about who manages a better RP fight, atleast in my mind. And I LOVE a good RP fight :D

~Sol
Oh thank you! >.< I shouldn't play a french person if I don't know french XD
I don't know it either. Taking my best guess and using as little as possible - she's hanging around English-speakers after all. If all else fails, we can type in English, but emphasize it to denote another language is being spoken. Might be difficult, though.
~Sol

Which is as close as my three years of high school French (after more years than I like to think about) can come to "I speak French like a Spanish cow."

HAHAHA That's funny, I took one year of latin in highschool... Semper Ubi Sub Ubi. (Always where under where)
Gesundheit!
Not used to typing accents. Mind the oddities and stereotypes, here and there.
~Sol
Hope that encounter didn't seem too short? We could have had it go on longer, but wasn't sure it was wise?
I'm fine with it, though I could have gone on longer. Some actual combat with Cray, instead of 'get zapped, fly away'. Would have given others a chance at encountering him, too. That said, I don't think you need to change it. We can always get into the lengthy and elaborate combat scenes later. This is still the 'prologue'! :P
~Sol
Yeaaah... Last 'prologue' in the wanderers thread kind of turned into a revolving door of villains, that wasn't really a very good idea on my part, I had fun but I think it exhausted others... Didn't want to have that happen so I hedged closer to the other side of the spectrum.
So instead of horribly typing accents, I've peppered her speech with French now and again? Better or worse?
~Sol
I like it, makes perfect sense too since it's hard to get away from native language ticks and quirks even if you're fluent in most of them you're bound to have one or more carry over from language to language. I don't even mind if she has some french catch phrases, did love the insult she threw at him!
Lol, well nothing could top Jeb...
~Sol
I find it hard to type for Rotten's speech and that just changing You or Your to Ya and The to tha. So just adding a few french words would be easier then full blown french accent. The rest you can state via non dialog. Example, it was clear she was stressed for her french accent was stronger than normal.
-------------------------------------------
Personal rules of good roleplay
1.) Nothing goes as planned.

Indeed!
~Sol
Yeaaah, what's more typing accents often makes it unreadable for some, so I tend to try and hedge away from it unless I'm intending something nonsensical, unimportant or obvious things like Rotten mentioned. Usually I'll just note the accent or change the types of words or grammar structure. I try to make Aaron sound more 'archaic' or refined, not sure it always works out.
Well, since we're on the subject of accents, is anyone having trouble with Jeb's? I wanted to indicate that he's got a strong Texan accent, but not get carried away with changing words around.
Speaking of Jeb, i think I've figured out his place on the crew. Closest naval approximation would probably be some kind of Chief. He's a tool-push and keeps the Martian repair / maintenance crews running. But, he also knows every corner of the ship personally and has most likely worked in all of them at some point.
Though it isn't often immediately obvious from his appearance or mannerisms, Jeb is a hell of a mechanic and quite intelligent to boot. He enjoys reading and has a small library in his quarters along with a workbench for tinkering.
Putting yourself in another persons shoes emotionally is something that everyone has to experience eventually. It's part of learning to be a human being. Roleplayers do it for fun.
Jeb is fine. :) I speak country, so it's all good for me!
Jeb seems like the type to be First Mate, but that's not my call. Seems like everyone knows their way around tools, here. That's a good thing.
~Sol
It's almost a prerequisite for steampunk heroes. In fact, if Hero Games put out a "Steampunk Heroes" sourcebook, I'd expect to find Mechanics as an "Everyman" skill.
Not sure where Nicole is going to be in the crew yet. Assistant somewhere, or possibly everywhere. Or maybe figuring out how to integrate the tech of this weird world they've found themselves in with their tech... and their magic. ^_^

Thats sounds about right for her. :) What about a navigator? Shall we all be wearing multiple hats?
~Sol
I think that makes sense, I imagine, while Aaron would be tolerant of the 'unintelligent' he wouldn't have them on his ship bungling around. So Jeb being a bit of a rough diamond makes perfect sense, weird analogy I suppose. I hadn't put much thought into the positions everyone filled for operating the ship to be entirely honest, wanted to let people figure that out. So I'm totally cool if you'd like for Jeb to be the Chief.
Aaron's usually too busy doing the captainy stuff like, where are we going, why are we going there, what did I do to that spoon or how did that grizzly get into the air ducts? Okay, so that last one is probably Jeb's problem, and the spoon was 'improved'.
I think based on that Jeb and Aaron may or may not have been in the martian war together, and is likely the longest standing crew member. Darryl would be a close second followed by Jane and Mouse. I imagine since Jane has Archaeological skill, she's the one who helps Aaron handle artifacts and their various dig sites? Mouse is a tinkerer of sorts, so she's liable to help him with Research and Development.
The martians probably handle cooking and cleaning and things like that.
Sounds like a plan!
~Sol
I can see Dyrral as being the navagator.

Maybe the ship had a First Mate, but they were killed during the transition?
For those who've watched DS9, I think Jeb would be comparable to Miles O'Brien, who was Chief of Operations on the station.
Putting yourself in another persons shoes emotionally is something that everyone has to experience eventually. It's part of learning to be a human being. Roleplayers do it for fun.
That makes sense too. Aaron likes to tinker but he hasn't got a mind for running something beyond the scope of his current project, or handling when and where to follow up on things. The ship's general maintenance he can DO, and willingly did before he had others in his crew. I think one of the Red brothers was probably first mate, at this point I don't even know who that would be at this point.
Also I should possibly restate what I meant by Jane's 'role', Aaron took archeology as a means to get to martian rock and artifacts, so really it's a minor in comparison, Jane would be essentially their 'dig manager' and Aaron would totally look to her for it, since he's more mechanically inclined.
I think Darryl's role as navigator suits him, maybe he'd be first mate given that Red and Red are both dead. (Yes, I named them that cause they were expendable and non-character characters so we didn't come through the rift with NO casualties lol)
I keep seeing Lead refer to "Jane" and I wonder who he means. If it's my character, that would be Miss Jones. ^_^
Or Nicole if they're on a given-name basis.
