Anthem looks really really good, but that phoenix look on her arm looks over done, but it may grow on me, time will tell, but she looks amazing regardless.
We don't climb mountains to be seen by others.
Upgrade! I mean that is just badass. Moving Hair.. pleeze!
She is everything I wanted her to be now. I really love this image THAT much. Go Anthem! Who was the artist here that I need to throw money at?

I like everything about Anthem's outfit, except the crazy-ass Witchblade thing on her arm/torso. How about making that more functional and less art-deco?

Aww our little Anthem Grown up! I remember her first concept art, she looked more like a sidekick then a Flagship character. Now she looks like she could go toe to toe with Wonderwoman. I don't mean physically either, her pose, costume and over all look, just says "I don't think I can beat you, I know I can."

2.) If it goes as planned it's not good RP
the three biggest cons:
sdcc

dragoncon
although the hard part with dragoncon is getting tickets to the "right" hotel. it actually has the most attendees.... they just dont have tickets. it is unlike all other cons. i personally would just do those 3 conventions. the nightlife is very active, be sure to goto some events early.

Isnt there a set of art rules that help with focusing the viewers eyes more on the Torso and the face? :)
I love the new improved anthem she looks very bad ass and I can see that arm having hidden gadgets on it like throwing exploding disks or razor sharp claws shooting out it looks great and it's different then what we have seen in heroes these days and it's very Phoenix project I love it !!
Am I the only one that hasn't received their Kickstarter T-shirt and/or the T-shirt from Cosmogulus yet? The additional T-shirts are starting to make me think my address got screwed up by the software, which admittedly I had trouble getting my proper address into at least one time.

I know of at least one other person who has yet to receive their kickstarter T-Shirt; or at least still hadn't recieved their T-shirt the last time I spoke to them...

I'm pretty sure it was stated in the update on the T-shirt sale, but we are basically combining taking care of the KS and the new orders together. It took a couple of test runs to get the T-shirt quality right, and then since there was so much demand we made a two week window for people to order their own before we got the whole lot printed and shipped. So the question is more, has anybody gotten theirs yet? Because they shouldn't have.

Interior Map Lead and UI Designer
Mmmmm....
I actually preferred her Silver Age-esque costume. Combined with the new body (less stick figure, more muscles/curves/padding?) it'd have been a very visually appealing heroine to beat into submission for interrupting my plans. THAT BEING SAID, I can kinda see the reasoning behind the change. Less Patriotism, more Phoenix motif (look at the arm guard..)
Revenge is motivation enough. At least it's honest...
Roleplayer; Esteemed Villain

Interestingly, the first version of that costume looked highly similar to the end one - and the artist hadn't seen the new Phoenix statue yet. It's based on classical Egyptian motifs.
And I wouldn't say there's less patriotism in the new Anthem. Look at her waist, boots, and neck.
Zerohour, geez, I mean, we give you a complete redesign of a major character, and all you talk about are the shirts? You don't want to know how much pain and suffering we went through dealing with this. We had to be careful it didn't get committee-designed. It had to be perfect. I wanted someone who could go face to face with Storm or Captain America, personality-wise, and not back down.
I think we got it.
Project Lead
Really? Hmmm.. I can see the Egyptian influence. Sounds like Anthem beat a Goa'uld for their armor then ;). The less patriotism is a comment on how much less noticeable it is on her compared to the first look which basically screamed "MURICA!". It's there, but not as blatant IMO.

:/ I was "trying" to be subtle in my desire to see Anthem with a slimmer arm guard that might use the layered scales.. and maybe have the scales look a little like feathers from a bird!? Give it a stylish phoenix feel. :) Use Cloth Physics and a Normal Map to make it seem like the hanging feathers are raised the lower you look at the individual layered feather.
Marines don't 'do' subtle.

Doctor Tyche, this comment does not reassure me.
I have no problem with the concept and the art is fantastic, but the feathers flaring in every which direction makes it look... sorta silly.
The 'gauntlet' appears to be 'bigger' than the heroine. It looks like It is wearing Her, not the other way around. It looks like a parasite perching on her shoulders. The picture looks like the 'gauntlet' is the real star of the show. It looks like it would be happy to ride on anyone's back and not like a part of the heroine.
I like the Phoenix motif. I like the basic 'patriotic' sense of the rest of the costume, but they seem completely at odds. Quite literally like she put this alien thing on, over her old outfit, and there's no integration, no blending of themes. There's no feathers or gold on her costume, no blue or red in the 'gauntlet'.
Lore-wise, I can imagine the gauntlet with a 'eagle' motif, being used by American Star, and then being 'reborn', transformed into a 'phoenix' when Anthem put it on. I like the idea.
Perhaps if the torso section looked more like armor, instead of a fancy feathered jacket one might see at an awards show?

I can't say I'm up on all the lore that has been released, but could some of what we see here re: the phoenix gauntlet's seeming to be a bit overpowered be intentional? Could she perhaps find it a bit of a struggle to control at times? [Edit: Apparently so! (I was writing this at the same time Doc was writing his post.)]
Leaving aside specifics on Anthem and just looking at art style, this appeals to me the most of anything released so far. I love the boldness in the lines, the definition and texture visible in the lower half of her costume.

Our four chief… among our *many* weapons are fear, surprise, Marvelous Designer, and a fanatical devotion to physics. Oh, and woolly minions.
[ Actually, we're dealing with some purely technical difficulties with it right this second. But we have gotten proof-of-concept pieces through the art pipeline far enough to be reasonably certain that it will be quite powerful once we get those nailed down properly. ]
Edit: Also normal maps, displacement maps, emissivity, translucency, ambient occlusion, roughness mapping and physically-based renderers courtesy of UE4, and a pretty ridiculous variety of built-in material functions to manipulate the same. In general, the problem isn't so much how to obtain a particular look as in understanding what actually causes "a look" to *be* a particular look. The shift to PBRs helps that a whole lot, especially for the more complex things like metallics or sub-surface shading.

While I know CoT is set in the USA, does the Main Signature Hero have to be so "Red, White and Blue"? Its a game about Super Heroes and Villains that is set in the US. Not about US Super Heroes.
I don't know her backstory so maybe its linked to that?

I was thinking that as well, but i dont know the lore for her yet... soo... :P
I would rather prefer as many countries players to accept her.. but i wonder if theres any hating going on of Capt. America, because of the blatant red, white, n blue outfit?!? :P

The new Anthem costume design looks good. I'm curious how the waist stripes work, the bit that shows resembles Captain America's shield. I look forward very much to more poses.
The clothes could use a bit more contrast, dark costume seems a bit antihero, but nothing a little more sheen and shiny 3D metal wouldn't fix. The light source for the lower part of the gauntlet seems to be different to the rest of the figure. The pose seems to be at odds with "stand up to the big boys" vision, the center of gravity seems to be to the right of her feet. Perhaps the left hand fingertips could be glove-red or skin-brown instead of matching the armour to be clear it is not a cybernetic limb. Yes these are minor things.

Was going to ask when are we going to get her backstory and powers. Guess that answered my question.
All 4 Mutants
Evolution is key. And mutants are key.
I like this redesign. She looks strong and confident. The gauntlet also appropriately doesn't look like it was made for her despite fitting her adequately. I'm envisioning a semi-magical artifact here in the eagle/phoenix head that then creates the rest of the arm and shoulder armor when worn. The head would need to be an odd size to accommodate multiple hand sizes, while the rest of the piece is assembled via the magic of the item and can thus conform more closely to the wielder's body.
As for looking like she could take on Storm or Wonder Woman, she looks like she could take on Wolverine.

I don't think we really live in an age anymore where it should be applauded when major characters are anything but standard Caucasian, but that being said, what was the thought process in deciding to make her African American as opposed to Chinese or British or Mexican for that matter?
Currently trapped inside the Speed Force...
As the Nightmare pointed out, the original (as far as we know) hero, as pertains to that gauntlet, dates back to the 19th century. It does not strike me as surprising that he would go with the patriotic / American flag motif, especially since is name is hardly subtle. Since Anthem is carrying on the torch, it's understandable that she would borrow that same motif (and her name is only slightly more subtle, with regards to the patriotism).
In other words, imagine if someone else took up Captain America's mantle.

Anthem is not the Main Signature Hero. You are.
She is, however, our Signature Patriotic Hero, and, as such, is very Red, White, and Blue.
Her development is important to us, because she compares and contrasts directly against not merely the greater universe of Patriotic Heroes (Cap, Superman), but because we know she will be compared directly against Statesman, who was the Main Signature Hero of the old game.
There were, we felt, things Statesman did well, and things that were not done well with him.
Anthem is our answer to that.
Her greatest power, beyond anything the armor gives her, is her determination. It is our determination.
We refused to let the City die.
And while we live, we will fight. And she will fight for us.
That is why she is important. And that is why it was so important to get this right.
I think we did it.
Project Lead
Notes: Captain America's movie did pretty well overseas, so I think we'll be okay there.
And that's true about Falcon. He'll do a good job, mind you, but we did it first. :)
Why is Anthem African-American? I'm not sure, but I think it's something to do with why she's a Marine. (First female general, 1978, by the way. First female DI, 1992) This is a woman who grew up in a bad neighborhood, joined the Marines in the 1990s, and fought every inch of the way. She was not merely a good Marine, she was an exceptional one. (And we've made sure that the reason she joined up with American Star matches that - that specific part of the story was mine.) No matter the odds, she has proven herself to be the best of the best. (... I am now honestly wondering if it's because of Men in Black, actually, the first one. You know the scene.)
That, and we felt like reflecting our composition as a community a bit better. CoH always had a high female percentage of players, and we have a high percentage of female staff - half our leads are female. It felt right to pay tribute to that.

I'm impressed by the redesign for Anthem and the direction being taken for NPC heroes. Avoiding the easy but unsatisfying game/story mechanic of NPC overpowered-ness is smart; these characters will be most compelling to me based on their strength of will, character traits, and skillful/creative application of their powers to get results.
I agree it is a little busy. I'm not sold on a teenager being the "signature hero" for a city.
Based on the information warcabbit has provided, I'd have put her in her mid-twenties and perhaps even a little older. Where are you getting 'teenager'?

The only teenage ( sorta ) signature I'm aware of is Owl Girl - though I would not be surprised if there's another or three. Anthem, however, was an experienced Marine *before* the storm. The game is set after the storm. fill in blanks. :)
USMC in the 'nineties, and likely already out before being taken under American Star's wing, puts her in her late thirties, minimum, at launch.

Right, right. That does mean she is at least 33 years old, since she could not have been born later than 1981 (always assuming she didn't lie about her age, which I wouldn't rule out if she wanted to get out of her neighborhood sooner rather than later).

You've never been to Boston, have you? LOL.
In any case I have to interject that there is a staunch difference in the art styles of American Superheroes (comic books as we know them) and Superhero lore in other countries.
Look what Japan did to Spider-Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-PQ2ws3fQQ
I read alot of Asian (Japanese and Korean) comics and there is a staunch difference. Hell just reading Alpha Flight is alot different than any Avengers/X-Men story and they're in the same universe.
There has been an influx of British writers at Marvel and people make notes all the time as to the shift in tone from the comics they know and loved. I.E.: American comics tend to have more emphasis on sex and violence because those are two prevalent themes of our culture. British writers are much more concerned with relationships and "cool" factor .. using the latest version of "cool" speaking characters.

All of that being said.. I prefer American Comic Book styling. It's what I know, it's the largest market that stays true to the spirit of City of Heroes.

Yeah, there's still work to be done here. Thanks for pitching in, MWM!

On the OTHER hand... Even though No One knows his name...
the black martial artist in Enter the Dragon can be spotted in 3 seconds or less and can tell you the Movies name. ;)

I'll be honest, we did not pick Anthem because she was black, or female. We picked her because she is freaking awesome. Black Gold's original concept of her was so well received that once he made the original concept, there really was no other option. It has been refinements from that seed ever since.

Izzy, I'd totally drink with Batman. Flash can be annoying at times depending on who writes him (I prefer him in JLU more than anything) whereas Bruce Wayne (Keaton, Bale, and Conroy's versions) is always interesting.. plus he's a recovering alcoholic ;) ALSO anyone who can't recognize Jim Kelly can't say they love Kung Fu movies or blaxploitation. Dude is an icon.
..that being said, Never mention STEEL again. Shaq should never be on the big screen.. ever. Jordan, yes. Shaq, NO!
And I'm honestly glad that the reason you picked Anthem was concept and not color/diversity. That being said, her being a Marine makes me think of Fortune from MGS: Sons of Liberty..

I would figure Flash's Hyper metabolism would possess Alcohol to fast for him to get a buzz or even drunk. So the fun of seeing a wasted Flash is out of the picture. Bruce Wayne I would figure tries to avoid being drunk or risk dropping the mask and going into dark brooding mode.

Personal rules of good roleplay
1.) Nothing goes as planned.
2.) If it goes as planned it's not good RP
I'm also glad that Anthem was picked based on backstory and not ethnicity
Currently trapped inside the Speed Force...
they can always add more characters later.
you need some toons to start off with.
should they fail to entertain....
....we need to be able to kill some off for entertainment purposes, and the least popular toons get elected for the job.
ah, let the popularity contests begin! heh.

I am prone to agree with others who have said that the vambrace is over the top. However, as Warcabbit has requested, I am also willing to wait and see things in context before passing final judgement.
But there IS a caveat here: If you guys are going to ask us to take things in context you're going to have to PROVIDE some context. You show us some art of the gang Rooks and that's nice. You have a street gang, several members at least, standing together against a tagged wall looking...well...gang-ish. It's a wonderful picture because it provides context. We can see who the leader is (big guy in front obviously) and all his followers.
Then you give us one 'splash' picture of some heroes (the black and white where the original Anthem and several others are doing the classic 'Superfriends charge', one solo shot of Anthem and now an updated Anthem. No context at all. We have the merest glimpse of a backstory and the notion that her determination is her main asset. Ok...I can work with that. But don't be shocked when you get negative responses to a piece of artwork that looks like a martial-arts star put on some art-deco armor for the 4th of July.
'Wait until you see it move.' 'Working as intended.' I can appreciate that you don't want to give the whole show away and you want stuff for a big Con reveal but seriously, this whole 'teaser' strategy that you're following might blow up in your face. You're asking us to take a awful lot on faith. We were surprised once when CoH suddenly shut down. Don't try and give us a big shock to hold our interest...you might not like the result.
I remember when Star Wars was cool...a long, long time ago...
I tend to disagree Comicsliuvr..
In this article alone we have a visual of her uniform, her unique weapon, that she is/was a marine, and the influences of the concept.
While we don't know how this fits in Titan City as a whole we have alot to work from here when piecing together who Anthem is..

Ok so I know you guys are pretty well set on the design at this point, but I'd like to give a little constructive criticism on Anthem's attire if I may.
Unlike most here, I kind of like the bulky stylized Phoenix/American Eagle(whichever it's suppose to be) Arm Bracer thing. My guess is it will unfold in a way that turn's it into a viable shield(Just my guess.) So I have to complaints with it, however do to it's overpowering size it kind of imbalances the the costume overall. I realize you guys are trying to keep this costume somewhat subtle, yet remaining epic. I'd like to suggest changing the stripes around the midsection to a different pattern, that part doesn't do much for me and leaves a large area of blue running from her chest all the way down to her boots. I feel like it needs to be broken up. So I came up with a little example of a "Belt/Back Emblem Wrap Around" that might help out this area. It would showcase a golden star belt buckle with stripes that start off small and increase in size as they wrap around to her much larger back emblem star. I'm not sure how far the Arm Bracer come's down her back however so it may throw this design off a bit. Might be worth looking into though.

My only other major gripe is how baggy the suit feels on her, mostly around the legs/waist. Making it more form fitting and less "Blue Jean Overalls" looking would go a long way as far as I'm concerned.
Other then that, pretty awesome lead character guys. Can't wait to kick some teeth in along side her. :D
okay, it seems the only country in the world just about everyone recognizes, and does not hate, is ireland.
What a man thinks of himself, that is what determines, or rather indicates, his fate. - Henry David Thoreau
...umm.. check your history. Most of Great Britain hates Ireland thanks to bad blood when they used to be slaves to the British AND helped William Wallace in his war for Scottish independence. Ireland even hates itself because of British rule of North Ireland which gave rise to the IRA and subsequently some of the worst terrorist attacks in Western History.

I suppose this raises the next, obvious, question: does anyone care what the English think?
Oh, and pass the tea, please.

Wow... considering my mother was almost killed by the IRA in a bomb attempt (blind luck and a car break down saved her), I am shocked to hear this... because in my family we hold no resentment to the Irish... and never have done.
And neither did we at any of the schools I went to... could this be a regional thing that happened pre 1974 possibly?
*edit* I would like to add that I have lived in more towns where some people have had more issues with the Welsh, and also the Welsh locals having problems with the Welsh students than English having issues with the Irish.
Like most "Facts" your experience may vary. Your family might not have any dissent, but trust me when I say I know a good amount that do. Might be that your town doesn't subscribe to blaming an entire nation on one group's actions :D
Nowadays, the cultural bad blood that's gone on for generations between multitudes of peoples has simmered down greatly all over the world. 40 years ago, speaking Chinese/Japanese/Russian in Korea might have gotten you in the hospital (..why did everyone love to annex Korea?). Now, most if not all of the current generation (and previous) doesn't really care for things in the past and would rather judge an individual than an ethnicity. THAT BEING SAID, there's still there's still.. those.. people.. who are very closeminded (>_> For god's sake, I'm still amazed there's Anti-Southern preachers.. the jerks)
