I think part of the problem

I think part of the problem is the incompleteness of the information given. Sure, MWM said that the winner would be in the preset rotation, and that is fine. But then they did not outline what else might/would/could/should be in the preset rotation. Other costume contest winners? Costumes that have some extreme or hard to discover elements? All, some or none of the Paragons? A button that just randomizes everything (aka the mutant clown generator that we had in CoX)? Who knows.

We just have to be satisfied in knowing that Schwarzschild made it in, further details to follow Soon™.

So often when playing City my wife and I would see an interesting costume and that would make us want to take an idea or two and run with it, whether on a new character or on a costume slot for an existing one. So having some "interesting" presets could really help get the juices flowing. Are some people just going to apply a palet choice and call it a day? sure. But even then, that gives us more visual variety among players for whom costumes are a lower priority.

Side note on the random feature. Sometimes when playing City, I had an idea for the mechanic side of a character first, rather then the lore side. I would then hit the random button a few times and would eventually find something that I would like about 80% of, and with a few tweaks I had a cool costume.

Wow... that’s a lot of faces! I need to get my hands on this AB! I yearn for it!

Really like the variety that has been presented here. I’m sure it’s not everything that’s possible (for interest I’m curious in seeing long, thin, angular faces, like those people who are just so tall they look stretched out) but I’m pretty darn impressed.

I really like the face variety you've got going here. Most of these look like they were done relatively quickly, which is good for me as I've never had the patience to spend a lot of time on a character's face

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

THANK YOU!
Different jaw lines, different noses...all good. Great for starting characters ready for the CharGen process.
Everything I asked for. I was worried, I am not now. Again, thank you.

The black guy under the logo with the beard...LOVE that face! I would not need any other alterations to run with that.
Likewise the gal in the lower right corner just needs make-up and she is ready to go.
The gals on the lower left corner and lower center both have wonderful oval shape heads/jaw lines. a feminine face was all I wanted.

all in all, great starting points for a character to build on.
Warcabbit, and all other devs involved...thanks for being patient with me. I love this: an update in a single post!

I saw that and thought he looked just like the guy who plays Black Lightning on CW. That character stood out to me too.

Most superhero MMOs (even those with lots of customization options) make the face an afterthought and I think they assume players are just going to cover it up with a mask or helmet anyway. I’m glad CoT will make a guy with no mask something desirable.

Side note... Every character I’ve ever made in Champions Online has either a mask, helmet, or a non-human head because the faces look like they were doodled by a kid in grade school.

Oh and the DCUO faces aren’t awful but you literally just pick from a limited list (worse than WoW) and then pick hair, facial hair, and colors.

The interwebs are amazing.

I just went on CoT Facebook and a lot of the comments are "these all look the same" or "I don't like any of those."

Ridiculous.

If you think they all look the same--facial recognition fail. If you don't see "the face you would have made", it's easy to see that you will be able to make that face.

This is exactly what's going on. Though they are not exactly the same, the faces are similar enough to make those with less detailed facial recognition abilities feel like they are seeing the same face over and over.

If you were to do one of those Photoshop face overlays to show the "hotspots" of same shapes, it'd definitely be in the eyes/eye sockets/mouths of these faces.

I'm personally not jumping to any conclusions knowing this, because the devs have already shown us quite a bit of variation with eyeballs, iris colors, face paints, etc.

But for some form of reference, here is a capture from an older version of the creator that was shown to us nearly 10 months ago:

And we can probably safely presume that these options have only been expanded upon since.

In case we're only left with preset faces in early versions: I'd like you to insert a preset where the face instead of being stretched vertically ("thin" kind suggested by somebody else before) it's stretched horizontally, with very separated eyes (both for males and females), large "warrior" nose, large mouth and face. I like those kind of faces very much (warrior/lion feeling) and I try to reproduce those when possible.

If you can't customize faces in detail or include all the sliders we already saw you're working on, the vertical/horizontal "face stretcher" may be the most important option to add before the restt, to permit "workarounds".

Note: Atm I like very much all the faces you have shown, and imho are very good and enough to begin with (much better than other triple-A games with presets only), also I noticed both a "thin" one on the right and a couple of "large" ones (black guys on the left) I may use probably in the meantime if we're left with presets only. Of course if we get sliders to change details the "problem" doesn't exist at all, but I'm not worried anyway, these faces are fine for now.

My first reaction was that many of them looked very similar to me as well, at least that was my first impression. It was only when I looked more closely -- "Ok, chins are different here. Face is wider here, more square, more rounded... etc." When I started to compare individual faces to each other, the variety was more apparent than when I was looking at the whole wall of faces at once.

I think part of that initial impression of "sameness" is also simply the fact that they're all being generated by the same engine, so they have the same sort of "assembled from pieces" ambiance about them. They each have the same component regions, even if those regions are different.

No complaints here. Glad to see this, and really looking forward to poking around with the facial feature sliders.

Sure, got some facial hair in there.

Multiple eyebrows.

All faces look quite...serious. A couple look to maybe have a smirk.

None of them look pretty. So, are you still saying I can make a pretty face? Because that is not the case at all. If I find them all ugly, I guess one can say, "You have so many options to make ugly faces!"

I get what you mean, but with what they have shown, I really think that if you could get your hands on the CC (as is, much less with all the continued work they're going to put into it), you could make a face you'd be at least ok with. You're right, we'll see, but I think the problem is more the aesthetic of the people making those faces compared to your personal aesthetic rather than current (much less future) CC capability.

That could very well be it, but I know I have yet to see a face that looks good. It reminds me of Mass Effect and how I dropped the game right in the beginning because the PC was so ugly.

The reason that they look a bit ugly, might be the tesselation they use. In development I often tone down the quality so it's easier and less resource consuming.

My thought was that they're

My thought was that they're great for NPCs. They're not what I'd expect to see for PCs. When it comes to heroes (or villains, for that matter), I expect people will tend to expect more Chris Evans and less Silas Weir Mitchell.

But, yeah. For a start? That'll do, pig. That'll do.

Brand X you're definitely

Brand X you're definitely being overly negative imho. "None of them look pretty." really?
This is some of the best preset faces I have seen for all games with just preset faces (which usually are all horrible but one passable), and I have an experience in gaming that's about 30 years long, from my 586 dos games (and I'm also an artist and lover of char creators). I don't know what I would have done to get one of these presets for Dragon Age Inquisition, for example.

Also there is a comics vibe even in the worst squared ones (the majority appear squared, not all, and the squared ones are very "american comics Cap America style"). I understand there may be different opinions but "None of them look pretty." appears either an exaggeration to get attention or laziness in not checking them all. And I'm not adding how the hairs and skin appear positively outside of my expectations (surely much better than Champions Online and DCUO, for example).

Are you comparing preset faces with sliders faces? Maybe is that, surely an expert with sliders would do much better (but there are some faces in the middle that show you a good mouth or a good pair of eyes, etc, making you see that those exist) I'm sure with those decent basics we will be able to do great particular chars with sliders.

That happened to me as well, Mass Effect Andromeda I did so many attempts and when I finally got what I wanted I uninstalled the game because the will to play it was passed lol and I was still not completely happy with my main char. That was an issue with cutscenes by the way, transforming the faces you created into very different monsters.
It wasn't a char-creator problem but a "cutscene & face-animations" one.

So, I'm in agreement that

So, I'm in agreement that there's not nearly enough eye options going on....E.g. they all have brown eyes, right? No blue or green? Red? Purple? no pupil? Cyber eye?

Notice in this picture, not many eye options going, compared to 13 nose options.

Um. No. :p

I wasn't being overly negative. I was being honest. I didn't like any of the faces.

I just mentioned the hair in that there wasn't much difference in say the male hairs, all short all about the same really. Minor differences. I counted four different styles on the female. I liked one of them. That does not mean I thought the faces were pretty.

I also wasn't talking about the skin texture. I was purely commenting on the aesthetics of the faces and I was disappointed in them.

When I see something I like, I'll say so :p I want aesthetics I love and animations I love. Two important aspects to the game for me :p

I only liked one face in CoH and that was Young Face 6 (pretty sure that was it :p).

The reason why there aren’t many hair styles is that the dev’s project was to provide base templates for faces providing a basic template for different genders and basic ethnicities.

These templates were meant to be fairly “neutral” in thirst regards. The hair was not meant to be featured. In fact I can spot a bug that was in this build that involves hair.

Not liking the faces as far as aesthetics are concerned is perfectly valid. You will have plenty of options to work toward what you may find aesthetically pleasing.

@Brand X Now I'm pretty

@Brand X
Now I'm pretty curious to see what you'll be able to create for the first costume contest here (or when we'll be able to use sliders), since you seem to set the bar so high on the faces subject you're either very very good at creating those or just harsh at judging them (I guess the 1st and it may make a future contest very interesting).

I still think CoT may already teach Bioware and Bethesda and other companies how to do acceptable presets, I know the bar is set very low with Bioware (beards, hairs and preset faces unusable...) but we must not forget we're talking about mega-production paid by EA vs indy-work, which is why in perspective these results by MWM are good imho.

I suspect, based purely on sliders we see in that "ten months ago" screenshot, that we'll be able to see the kind of "pretty" faces you often get out of games like Black Desert. There's an enormous amount of range we're looking at, and I'm eager to see where the CC ends up.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

One question that might help

One question that might help inform the reactions on this thread:

How close are those faces to final release quality? Let's say if 0 is start of Alpha, 50 is Beta, and 100 is full release?

Spurn all ye kindle.

I wanted to add, that maybe it would help to give the different settings their own category. So if we want to change the nose, we wouldn't need to scroll through dozens of other sliders.

Some Modern and AAA games (and black desert online) let's you define the thing you want to get changed on clicking the wanted area. (Fallout for an example)

It's just an idea, though.

That would be great. Do we

That would be great. Do we have some more recent UI screens? It would maybe show us some couple of the newer settings. (Not like the most recent ones, just something which isn't 10+ months old :'))

Let's wait for the Avatar Builder (or Character Creator or whatever it is called) to be released before we start critiquing the options.
We know that the screen shot is X months old and it is clear that there are not nearly enough sliders in that image to accurately shape any head. We have also recently seen a close up of ooglymoogly's test run character. And it provides evidence that there are many eye options (at least pupil color).

You know, that's right, I remembered that example shortly after I posted the critique. That pic got me way more excited than the last couple updates.

Oh. I never said I was good at sliders. However, one doesn't have to be good at sliders to judge what one considers good or not.

In fact, took me forever to get faces I liked in B&S.

I like the range those

I like the range those costumes supplied. To be honest, if I seen the standard pretty face hero, it would be disappointing. It leaves the feeling that the creator would be limited. To see the craziness, which may turn some off is appealing. You don't have create a beetle man, others will. You don't have to create a standard faced human, others will. I like all the costumes, great showcase team.

As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.
