List of required Giant Monsters

Giant Robots attacking the city. MUST HAVE.
Giant Totally Cute Female Human looking for her cheating boyfriend, and she's attacking the city.
Giant Godzilla clone...COH never managed this. We must surpass this! and it needs a devastating (something that will kill newbies) fire breath.
Giant Crabs attacking the Beach.
Giant Bugs/spiders/mantis, etc.
Robeasts/giant humanoid monsters fitted with cybernetics and missiles.
Dragons. It talks. My scales are shields, my claws are spears, my breath is DEATH!
T-Rex

Not so giant really big types
Ogres 12 to 24 feet tall, super strong with a club (special effect, the club sends the Player flying)
Battlesuits, 12 feet tall. Designed to fight supers.
12 foot tall robots
Giant Buzzards that eat flying heroes.
Giant Man eating Bunnies

Silly Giants Cause, ya know, the artists just LOVE churning out the new models.
Giant Armadillos that burst from the ground tear open an office building and eat office workers with a long sticky tongue.
Giant Macys day balloon on the rampage

I read one PnP game where Stalin had awoken the frost Giants and converted them all to rabid communists.

Which goes to T-Rex being Monster class, not Giant Monster class :)

Possibly same with Trolls.

Just as an aside, that's kind of how the story arc for Romulans starts out in Star Trek Online ... except that it isn't critters doing the snatching, it ALIENS and their mechanized snatcher bots doing the culling in a manner worthy of the Wraith from Stargate: Atlantis.

I absolutely LOVE this game. After reading this post I instantly challenged my wife to a duel when I get off work.
Also- you must have the DX version of that Cyber-Bunny. My Mekadragon reigns supreme.

I vote for a giant slime monster just absorbing weird stuff. Maybe the challenge is to stop it early because as it eats it gets larger and more powerful. Could be a lot of fun. Maybe doable with 3-5 people at first- when the alert goes out across the police radios so first responders have a chance, but each stage requires more people to take on the growing behemoth? That could be so epic.

On a slightly more serious note ...

Any kind of Slime Monster (of the Giant variety) practically begs for Destructible Terrain so as to leave gigantic slime trails of phosphorescent goo behind cooling in its wake (and impromptu water fountains of ruptured plumbing infrastructure).

Slime and Jello monsters require Jiggle physics. So might as well add a little jiggle to the female avatars as well...

While I always thought the

While I always thought the Giant Robot in Striga should emerge from the volcano, occasionally, I really don't want to see monstrous things using the Phoenix for a bowling ball.

So, I'm going to have to insist that these things be Instanced and restricted to a zone. A fairly empty zone, since I can't imagine the city rebuilding that tenement that got flattened as an identical tenement to get flattened Next time. Enjoy Monster Island. Don't forget to bring bananas for the Gorilla.

Be Well!

Let me throw a different spin

Let me throw a different spin on things for you then.

In City of Villains there were Mayhem Missions, where as a Villain you go to go to Paragon City and BLOW S**T UP! Property Damage was the WHOLE POINT! "Clearing" the zone meant destroying EVERYTHING in the zone!

Except ... those Missions were done at Human Scale.

So ...

What if, in City of Titans, there are Mayhem Missions where the PCs aren't fighting against the invading Kaiju ... but instead, YOUR PC is fighting AS THE KAIJU!

Yes ... your PC gets their size increased 100x and now IS the Giant Monster attacking Titan City! Destructible Terrain! Massive amounts of property damage! Swatting Heroes out of the sky like the bugs that they are! By all the gods, it would be beautiful ...

All we need is an instanced Mission and a batch of tainted caffeinated products ... mix and stir well and ...

I once GMed a PnP supers RPG

I once GMed a PnP supers RPG in which the following happened:

A terrified man in a lab coat runs out of the Biology lab and grabs the PC.
"You've got to help me!"
"What seems to be the problem?"
"I was experimenting with a solution that was supposed to increase the brain capacity of mice a thousandfold, but it all went wrong!"
*hero cracks knuckles* "So, we've got superintelligent mice trying to take over the world?"
"Um, not exactly...."

At this point, a nerve cell the size of a German Shepard leaps from a window and tries to strangle the professor.....

I know this thread is covering giant monster threats for CoT but your post reminded me of the classic TOS episode Operation: Annihilate!

Maybe we could have a swarm of evil alien brain cells attacking the city that we have to collectively deal with.

A giant mecha-snake Disguised as a Commuter rail.
An Acid cloud that does poison/burning damage over time to anything under it and slowly moves over the city.

I love this idea! Like a Mayhem Mission, it should be a completely optional outside the box mission that's just kind of there for anyone who feels like doing something a bit different.

It would really nice if this was also available as UGC option with a variety of destructible maps. The User designs and creates the giant monster, picks a destructible map, then defines whether the player is supposed to stop the giant monster or aide it!

For me the biggest problem

For me the biggest problem with giant monsters is striking that balance between accessible and rarity.

You don't want the monster so common that it becomes commonplace to see it running by and you just ignore it because it will be back in 20 minutes and you don't want it so rare that people are camping its known spawning spots waiting to see it.

CoH had both of these issues. I honestly don't remember a time when dethsurge was not standing around looking bored (sometimes more than one)...he became a common fixture. The flip side was Sally in Croatoa....there was a period of time where you would see groups just sitting around the lake waiting for her to spawn.

I think the best way to have giant monsters in the game is one of 3 ways....

1-A monster island that you can go to but isn't required....any kinda of out of the way place where players don't NEED to venture but can if they want....sewers....islands....caves...ect ect ect
2-Have the monster part of a mission arc or TF giving the player more choice over how often they see the giant monster...
3-Periodic times in the year for a week or two have giant monster raids on the city for example some new issue releases or holiday events have some giant monsters for kicks.

The first two tailor the monsters appearance to how much the player wants to see it with the third being a special event that lasts long enough to see it but not so long as to wear out its welcome.

Just having them spawn randomly in the streets just leads to a who cares attitude among much of the player base imo

Both also had super powers.... and street gangs and magic and..... well list goes on.

Giant Monsters and a lost world/monster island is a staple of comics...should be represented in some form just like an evil scientists and his lab or super soldiers and the military base. With it being forced (my biggest point) you can choose to ignore it.

Just tossing a monster in a zone who waits around for you to fight will ensure it starts getting mockingly ignored ... and if you are pressured to confront it in some way, like it actively seeking you out or providing your character with a negative impact until the monster is defeated, will only breed resentment.

This can be said of a zone event from the raids (ala the rikti invasion which tried to force you into confrontation) to dethsurge (standing around most days taking potshots and those who strayed too close on the way to Cimerora or the black market).

This one kinda treads a fine line between being separate enough and unobtrusive enough that the players don't really notice it unless looking for it. but yes seed was not exactly good.

Then do it differently!

Instead of monster island we can have Dino island! Or even...DINOBOT ISLAND!

Then do it differently!

I would love to see Dinobots as well as giant versions of apes, mechs, lizards, squid, steamwork spiders, real spiders, sloths, insects, snakes, dragons, tanks... heck a giant bunny with razor teeth. a prehensile tail, horns that shoot acid and arms that stretch 50 meters...really anything the devs come up with as long as it fits the story they are telling AND if I don't like that foe I can avoid it completely.

But Dinobots or something else its still effectively a monster island....and if you look I also used monster island to represent all separate areas with monster...like caves, sewers ect.

I think the OP's list was good in terms of representing the types of monsters...I just am not a fan of the random spawn concept for the reasons I listed before.

Red... Why ;-; THA FEELS! D:

Totally +1 on some form of robotic dino beasties though. + 1 more if we can get things like Animal heads on our chests for "totally-not-a-beastwars-ripoff" original characters... Another neat idea would be an abandoned carnival/theme park where the animatronics came to life, from cowboys, all the way to Big 'ole T-rex.

Tinted lens of time, and

Tinted lens of time, and early fascination with newly developing 3D animation perhaps? I mean, the character models still hold up fantastically well, but the animations and scenary at times, especially early in the series... not so much =p

OK the PERFECT giant monster!

OK the PERFECT giant monster!
A nerd. he's 80 feet tall, wears glasses held together with tape, he has high water pants and a slide-rule in his pocket....
BUT
He carries a bright red crow bar that he swats heroes with.

Now that would be scary...

Going back to the original

Going back to the original post, there is one suggestion made I have to ... well, I personally for myself don't object to it, but lets just say that giant spiders would be a really bad idea. Yes, they'd be really cool to have, but for the fact that a significant amount of the human population have varying degrees of phobias regarding them.

Now, T Rex? Yes, please. In fact rather than doing Monster Island, why not do Dinosaur Island? The land that time forgot has been a sci-fi staple for ages, and having a mission, or set of missions to go rescue the research scientists could be a lot of fun. As far as I'm concerned they wouldn't even need to be a major threat to our heroes... but that's probably just me.

GMs. What fond memories I

GMs. What fond memories I have.

Slightly off topic: I think you could have a whole series of "mini zones" attached through an airport mission terminal. Where characters could travel to all parts of the world and seek out impressive monster battles. Since these places are remote you could have more fun with the maps, destructible terrain, unique landscapes, various zone attributes (underwater, changing tides, lava, moon gravity, free fall, ice sheet) all to do battle or even just see GMs. Having a King Kong island with dinosaurs and giant gorillas and super sloths etc would be awesome. I remember my first foray into Perez Park getting lost in the woods and rounding a corner and getting completely stomped and team wiped by a "what the hell was that thing!" "A purple People eater! That's what it was." I hope they could instill that same level of awe fear and excitement into a GM encounter.

Slightly on topic. I think one of my favorite GMs was Jack in Irons. But it always bothered me that he had that Ginormous club and never went hero golfing with it. I feel like it would have been incredible to see that club swing down strike a ball of a tank and watch said tank fly off into the distance. A KB that could ignore root and modifiers and simply send a person flying 300 yards. Even better if he struck the bugs bunny looking after the golf ball pose after he did it. Or a hold power that would simply be him using the club to hammer someone into the ground like a yard stake.

I'd always wanted to see the council robot free of that volcano too.

Or see a sky raiders airship descend upon the city. What an incredible event that would be. A massive shadow looms over the city and this airship begins launching waves of flying soldiers with rockets and cannons blasting away.

In order to make them a little more dramatic and rare, each GM shouldn't spawn for the sake of 'spawn'taneity but should spawn with a goal. If Gojiro shows up he should head for the nuclear power plant, lay waste, and then swim back out to sea, unless you stop him. This way he's not just standing around all the time if no one is interested in beating him. Jurassic looked positively depressing standing alone out in Crey's Folley at times. Same for the sky raider carrier. It comes in steals some tech, valuables, etc, leaves. Dino on the loose? Have a scientist alternately chasing him or running from him begging you "Don't hurt my greatest creation!" or "Kill it! kill it now!" respectively. Then after 20minutes or whatever of tossing cars and people the things bursts into a massive pile of goo. To which the scientist replies "Seems that the 3d cellular matirx printer was not as well calibrated as I had initially thought."

On the topic of giant monster spiders. Can't we all agree that there are enough of these in the real world and all fantasy games to not also include them here? I currently have a spider in my car. I'll have to wait for it to freeze to death before I can go home. Should be dead in a few weeks. Or I need to set my car on fire.

Even if it looks dead, it

Even if it looks dead, it would probably be safe just to light the car on fire, don't want to take any chances!

This could be a minigame -You could have a time machine , or just like a virtual world where you have to fight dinosaurs!

I'm all for open-world mega

I'm all for open-world mega-monsters.. but for the sake of visual cohesion AND framerate can we keep them to a max of like 12-15 players.

I get so bored watching glowy things going all over the screen to the point where I can't tell what's going on.

And on the matter of giant spiders, if we're probably going to have them let's have them in the game as ALLIES to heroes instead of enemies. Let's have a required objective of certain content to amicably interact with creepy giant eight-legged freaks instead of invading their nesting grounds and killing their young (Ellen Ripley, you b!tch!) with complete conventional FAN DISSERVICE wall to wall. I want this. Let's have Good Can Be Ugly As Sin as an outloook shoved through our screens sideways in some content, please. Let the vilains be the ones trying to wipe out unique species and not the heroes.

Who agrees?

It's also not very heroic

It's also not very heroic when you have 100 people wailing on every world boss that happens to pop up. In SWTOR world bosses go down with as few as 5 people and it makes me feel like a contributor and a great achievement. While in GW2 I am merely a cell in the back of a zerg that takes down a dragon.

I'm not proposing a cap on all events to single digit participants, every once in awhile having an event where several dozens are involved would present a nice change of pace.

A note on that spider. I managed to shoo it out a window. It was too fast to squish and was hiding in my defrost vents pretty regularly. Thankfully it came out of the vent and was sitting on a windowsill where I was able to get between it with a pen and shoo it out, closing the window behind it. Whew.

My contribution to the list

My contribution to the list:

Holiday specials:
Snowman/elf monster
Pumpkin monster: I suggest more vine-based than humanoid (think: http://40.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mcrh7ktKYW1rem1amo1_500.jpg )

Grotesque giant zombie amalgamation: many corpse parts fused together into one 20ft monster. Like a magic-based, non-sewn Dr. Vahzolik.

Giant tank: Inspired by (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav) but with many other guns to defend it.

Sentient sandstorm: bonus points for there being no desert around :p

Rave monster: (this one's silly) a monstrous being of pure strobe and laser lights

Marshmallow monster: homage to Stay Puff :p

Giant Doppleganger: a player completes an action, then a giant doppelganger of himself attacks the city.

Counter-proposal.

Diminishing returns on Damage Throughput on each damaging hit after the first one within intervals of X seconds.

If it helps, think of it as scaling Resistance, where the more people beat on something at once, the less each of their attacks contribute to taking the $Target down. You could even do something where the diminishing returns don't kick in until 9 or more hits within a span of X seconds ... where X=1 and the maximum Team size is 8, and each attack takes at least 1 second to animate.

That means that if a single Team of 8 people are beating on a Boss, they're all doing full damage with every hit.

If a League of 40 people are beating on a Giant Monster, probably 1/4 to 3/4 of them are dealing reduced Damage Throughput to the target in any given second of combat, making the Giant Monster (in effect) "tougher" to defeat with more attacks being directed at it, so it "lives longer" and doesn't have to be a stupidly huge bucket of HP.

Um, the corollary of fiddling

Um, the corollary of fiddling with Resistance like this, is to give GMs extra bags of hit-points for every character in the group... Which would be a lot easier to do, I suspect.

Wouldn't it be Really simpler just to create different instances of the encounter, which would be served based on the type and size of the player-group? This could mean that the encounter itself is Different, plays out differently, requires different strategies, depending on the situation.

I think that would be much better than 'changing the rules' of a character's performance. There's a big difference between 'boss is tougher' and 'I've been stealth-nerfed'.

Be Well!

Stop it before it grows too big or it'll explode and cover the whole area in annoying little blobs that attack players and NPCs... who must be saved before they become accessible again.

If it grows too big, then you need to form a zone-size raid to fight off all it's mito's first before you can attack the central mas... wait, this sounds familiar...

I'd go with a giant

I'd go with a giant tardigrade that tries to eat all the city's food supplies from warehouses and grocery stores. It could crash down as a big rock from space, then unfurl and start slowly stomping around. They're the only known multicellular species that can survive in space, so... giant tardigrade from space.

Oh, hey, apparently I'm not the only one to think of this.

From Ramul at Deviantart:

What about amorphous/blob

What about amorphous/blob-like monsters, like the Hamidon Goo or, obviously, the Blob?

I truly fear the attack of the neato burrito. MWM has published no resistances to a gas attack!

Quote:

Just up the street from my apartment in San Francisco, there was one of those fast food restaurants that was either a KFC or a Taco Bell, depending on the angle from which it was viewed. The establishment was a frequent stopping point for students coming from the nearby college... and those students were a frequent target for a remarkably bright crow.

Now, on most days, the bird in question would just hang around the restaurant (as well as other ones nearby) and scavenge for scraps. Every once in a while, though - I saw this happen twice, and had it happen to me once - it would enact a much more complex scheme than simply going through the gutter: The crow had apparently discovered that money could be exchanged for food, so it would wait until it saw a likely mark, squawk at them to get their attention, then pick up and drop a coin. Anyone who responded would witness the bird hopping a few feet away, then following its "victim" toward the source of its next snack.

When the crow approached me, it dropped a nickel on the ground. I stooped, picked up the coin, and then jumped slightly when the bird made a noise that sounded not unlike "Taco!"

Needless to say, I bought that crow a taco.

The final out-of-pocket cost for me, minus the nickel, was something like $1.15. Even so, I figured a bird that smart deserved a reward simply for existing.

Of course, that was probably exactly what I was supposed to think.

TL;DR: A crow paid me five cents to buy it a taco.

All kidding about the giant robot's ... um ... attributes ... aside, this thread does raise a not unimportant question.

LOGISTICS.

Any kind of ground based support system(s) for Jaeger size giant robots is not going to be depending on any sort of "austere" setup back on land involving someone's garage and a chest of Craftsman tools. You're looking at needing something on the scale of a Shatterdome simply just to house and maintain these machines, because MAINTENANCE ISN'T FREE. Heck, even the image of this giant robot "girl" depicts her as being inside a hangar "bay" in a facility, and the scale is simply massive (and I'm talking about what's around her, not the robot girl herself). So to put it politely ... any building on the scale of a Shatterdome needed to house and maintain Jaeger scale giant robots is going to be a simply MASSIVE landmark. I'm talking Zigursky Penitentiary scale enormous, just to have the necessary internal volume to house and maintain Jaeger scaled giant robots.

That scale and size of civil engineering construction isn't something you can easily conceal, especially not around a coastal city like Titan City where the water table comes up pretty high below the ground surface (meaning underground facilities are QUITE impractical to build, especially with no one noticing any construction going on). No matter how you want to slice it, you're talking about a construction project on the scale of Boston's Big Dig costing billions of dollars to construct and taking YEARS to complete, during which THOUSANDS of workers were employed. Needless to say, you can't build an ARMORED hollow building for housing and maintaining giant robots IN SECRET ... or at least, the secret won't last past the first deployment, when EVERYONE will see what you've been up to in there.

In other words ... if Titan City is going to feature Jaeger scale giant robots (presumably to defend the city against equally GIANT MONSTERS attacking the city as a recurring Event, akin to Lusca showing up in Independence Port) ... there's going to need to be a LANDMARK where those giant robot(s) are housed and maintained, and that location isn't going to be a secret.

AND ... let's stipulate that if Titan City is going to be getting attacked by GIANT MONSTERS, those Kaiju are going to have to COME FROM SOMEWHERE. They aren't just going to be spawning into the middle of downtown like a Zombie Apocalypse Event where Dead People start busting their way up from underground all over the zone. No, the Kaiju are going to be approaching from somewhere outside the city limits ... and coming from the landward side of the city is just simply implausible, owing to the fact that the landward side of the city is inhabited/populated/patrolled by the governmental entities of the United States. So if the GIANT MONSTERS don't approach the city from land, that leaves the only option of having them come FROM THE SEA, which is (relatively) uninhabited/populated/patrolled by civil and/or military forces.

So if you take as a given that the "field of combat" for any sort of Jaeger vs Kaiju scale giant robot versus giant monster battles would necessarily need to be happening offshore along the continental shelf to defend Titan City (minimizes civilian property damage that way), that means for both response time and just simple "round trip" mileage to the presumed battlefield(s), you're going to want to have any sort of Shatterdome styled facility located along the coast (since walking a giant robot through town does nasty things to the paving and makes the constituents upset at city government). And wherever that Shatterdome facility is located, it's is going to need to have AWESOME logistical connections to be able to ship in and out all of the materials and parts and supplies that it is going to need. You're going to want to have easy access to intermodal transport of just about every variety ... air, sea, land, rail ... EVERYTHING ... because the quartermaster/logistics needed to support such a facility are just going to be too massive to do any other way (especially if you're trying to do it on the cheap with government funding).

This suggests to me that the most likely place to put any sort of Giant Robot type of Shatterdome styled facility in Paragon City would be at either the Titan City Airport (assuming we have a zone for one) as an adjunct to the main airport facility, somewhere in Ironport (go figure, eh?), or perhaps as part of some kind of US Coast Guard port/base facility (assuming Titan City even has one of those) within city limits along the coast. That means a Mogul tier effort of creating a custom building feature for the game world, and all of the activity that would be going on inside (gotta have showers of welding sparks falling for no good reason almost continuously!) when the giant robot(s) aren't being deployed to counter an attack.

Do all of that and we can start putting our Giant Monster Attacks Titan City events into their proper context, "grounding" them in the game world, and extending the LORE of the game, because these kinds of massive undertakings require an incredible mobilization of not only human capital, but also of resources and wealth to maintain and sustain. There is absolutely no part of such an undertaking that qualifies as being "cheap" when it comes to maintaining an ACTIVE coastal defense like that. And THAT, is how you take a single picture, draw inspiration from it, weave a story around it, produce a narrative, and wind up with something beyond cool ...

Okay, I'm quoting all of that from the other thread (so as to necro post to this one) for an entirely different question ... how should City of Titans allow PCs to participate in a giant robot versus giant monster battle, done in a Pacific Rim style of Jaeger versus Kaiju?

First off, let's stipulate that in the Pacific Rim movie series, there are no superheroes (and there aren't any supervillains, per se). Because of that, the way the Pacific Rim movies depict things, the only good/useful counter to a Kaiju is a melee combat giant robot, and there really isn't any help the Jaegers can get from supplemental forces aside from Spotter duties where observers can advise on where Kaiju might "disappear" to in a dense urban environment with lots of obstacles to lines of sight. In other words, you can't really do much in the way of coordinated strikes let alone team tactics or even what you'd REALLY want to be getting at ... combined arms tactics ... bringing to bear infantry, armor and artillery. In Pacific Rim, you've basically got "armor" in the form of the Jaegers, and that's it. There really isn't any support beyond that.

But that all changes in a world with superpowers. Yeah, you can still have the giant robot acting as "big armor" in the fights with a Kaiju ... but now you can also have "infantry" support in the form of people with superpowers who can move in and survive to assist the giant robot fighting the giant monster.

Specifically, if you were wanting to code this game mechanically ... what you do is you design the encounter(s)/event as being something where the giant robot can't defeat the giant monster on their own ... and the PCs joining the fight can't defeat the giant monster on their own either ... but with the PCs working to support the giant robot's attacks on the giant monster, the PCs and the giant robot can "win" together.

The way you do this is by designing the giant robot's attacks to be substantially resisted by the giant monster by default, so much so that in a 1 on 1 fight with the giant monster, the giant robot simply won't be doing enough damage to the giant monster (even with a 100% hit rate) such that the giant robot is guaranteed to lose the fight. However(!), this factor can be altered/changed by the actions of PCs joining the fight against the giant monster. PC attacks on the giant monster do functionally "negligible" damage (100 damage out of 10 million health doesn't amount to much, proportionately speaking) ... but PC attacks on the giant monster create vulerabilities that can be exploited by the giant robot when it attacks the giant monster. What you wind up with is a situation in which the "ankle biter" attacks of the PCs reduce the giant monster's resistances to the attacks by the giant robot, such that the giant robot is capable of delivering enough damage (through the giant monster's resistances) to win the fight as the last one standing.

And that creates a somewhat interesting dynamic to use for gameplay. Basically the "infantry" of the PCs create vulnerabilities that the giant robot "armor" exploits to do meaningful/useful damage to the giant monster. You wind up with a cooperative combined arms dynamic, where neither can do the job alone, but working together they can get the job done cooperatively, because the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. And in that kind of formulation, PC participation rates in the event become relatively crucial to fending off the giant monster successfully, because the possible results are win, lose or draw (with draw being a situation where the giant monster retreats without being defeated, or the giant monster is defeated but the giant robot has taken too much damage already and collapses in place and needs to be salvaged "the hard way" resulting in, effectively, a double KO).

Now, taking that very basic idea ... where the PCs attack the giant monster to create vulnerabilities that the attacking giant robot can exploit to deal sufficient damage to "win" ... you can increase the complexity of the endeavor beyond the stupidly simple Big Bag Of Hit Points scenario by running telegraphs where damaging a specific body part ahead of an attack by the giant robot increases the vulnerability to that incoming attack in a way that causes the PCs to (in effect) want or need to "circulate" around the body of the giant monster to attack. Basically, simply camping on a single part of the giant monster's hit box winds up being inefficient. Instead, if you "follow" the telegraphs to attack different areas in succession, your attacks on the giant monster increase in effectiveness and that in turn makes the giant robot's attacks more efficient (over time) such that it can be enough to turn the tide and "win" against the giant monster.

And in case it isn't obvious enough just from reading this writeup, I honestly think that building a Kaiju Event like this would be interesting enough that people would want to participate in it. Rather than the PCs defeating the giant monster directly, they're instead being tasked with helping to INdirectly defeat the giant monster, in a way where you KNOW that your contribution is making a difference in the final outcome. How the event turns out depends on what you DO, even though it's a cooperative event. Furthermore, it wouldn't be a case of selecting target and just mashing buttons for your attack chain until the target is defeated. Instead, you'd have a sort of whack a mole/chase the rabbit dynamic going on where the PCs need to keep moving(!), chasing down the optimal assist strategy, rather than just camping and letting the damage flow.

Throw Control as well as Buff and Debuff effects into the mix, for BOTH the giant robot and the giant monster, and things can start getting dynamic enough such that there isn't a preset pattern or script to follow to achieve victory. There would be sufficient randomness, both in terms of how many PCs show up as well as what Powers they can bring to bear, that almost every event encounter would be different.

Set the whole thing up such that the giant robot meets the giant monster out around the Miracle Mile off the coast of Titan City (however far away that needs to be) and let the "signal" to the Players that the event is about to take place is SEEING the giant robot DEPLOY from its Shatterdome styled base out into the (in this case) Atlantic Ocean to intercept the incoming giant monster. I'm reasonably sure that if the event is tuned Fun Enough, it wouldn't take much for an entourage of PCs to start escorting the giant robot as it strides out of the city into the ocean waters, followed by announcements in Player channels calling for everyone to gather up and get ready. So long as the event is FUN to play, you might even be able to get away with negligible event rewards, because the motivation to participate in the event isn't the [s]bribe[/s] payoff at the end, but rather the ENJOYMENT of participating with all the other Players who joined in.

I hate pretty much any event

I hate pretty much any event or whatever where my hero is there just to "help" an NPC. Champions Online did that a few times and every time I felt superfluous.

If I'm playing a flying brick ala Superman, I want to actually fight the thing. Some of the best times fighting giant monsters in CoH was when my tank would get agro.

I don't mind at all if I'm helping other players, but I don't want to be playing second fiddle to an NPC.

In the scenario I'm proposing, you WOULD be fighting the giant monster. The key point is that you wouldn't have hope of a chance to be able to solo it. And if you can't solo something, that means that in order to take it down, you're going to need teamwork.

Understood.

In other words, you want to be THE Hero. You want to be THE ONE ... the MVP. You don't want to play a supporting role, you want to play the MAIN role. You want top billing. You want to be the STAR of the performance. You want the applause and approval of your fellow Players, not the (pre-programmed) "thanks" of an NPC at the end of an event for helping the NPC defeat the Big Bad™ with your assistance. You want to be the center of attention (and therefore, fame) for your deeds, and to receive adulation for doing them from your fellow Players for being the keystone of the effort that yielded victory.

Guess it depends on how you want to look at things then. Perspective matters.

How about if NPC 1 and 2 have

How about if NPC 1 and 2 have their "Epic Showdown™" and which one wins is ENTIRELY due to the participation (or lack thereof) of the PCs attending the event.

Like I said, if the PCs "help" then the giant robot wins. If the PCs "don't help" (or otherwise can't get their act together), the giant monster wins. What YOU do (or don't do) influences the outcome. It literally is a case of Couldn't Have Done It WITHOUT You for the defending giant robot, with the flipside being a case of Couldn't Have Done It WITH You for the giant monster.

Under those circumstances, how much of the spotlight do you really need to hog in order to feel like you're the center of attention and the "fulcrum point of destiny" in the event, without which it all could have (and therefore, would have) gone horribly wrong?

What happens when the monster

What happens when the monster wins? If the robot falls is the event just done? Why can't the heroes take it on their own? Why can't our heroes be as powerful or more so than the giant robot?

It's the same problem I have when it comes to needing to use some mission specific item to achieve the goal.

In Champions Online there's an event and at a certain point you need to put on their super special armor... To break a wall. Wow, my super strong hero couldn't possibly have done that!

Let the heroes be the stars. Not some NPC.

As much as I love you Redlynne, I think this is a bit of an extreme interpretation of the intent.

I do understand not wanting to be a perpetual sideshow to the main NPC characters as DCUO is. CoX even had this to an extent with the Signature Heroes in which we ran a bunch of missions and raids on their behest.

But at the same time, I think it would be nice once in a while to realize that I can be part of a greater community and work for something bigger than myself.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

No need to go hyperbolic,

No need to go hyperbolic, Redlynne.

I think it might be an interesting idea... in an Instance.

I wouldn't want to be trying to arrest a mugger, while some giant NPC battle stomps through my neighborhood. Meanwhile, teams of Heroes and Villains are playing 'Big Red Ball' with the outcome, trying to trip up one of the combatants.

There were plenty of times when a Rikti Raid or Zombie Apocalypse would spawn in CoH and completely ruin my playtime. I just wanted to complete the mission and go home, but instead, the game evacuates everyone, so I can't do my thing.

Exciting group-centered content isn't always a good thing.

Be Well!

Very well then ... explain to me what the difference is between putting a battle between a giant robot and a giant monster OFFSHORE from the city, but still within visible range(?) of the shoreline ... so out of the way away from everything else in the city ... and sticking it in an instance where no one else can see it happening (or care that it's happening at all)?

Now, if I were talking about having the giant robot and the giant monster rampage through entire city districts, destroying everything in the vicinity and DISRUPTING everyone else's game time in the process (like the Rikti Raids and the Zombie Invasions tended to do), I'd be right there with you objecting Fireheart. But since that's not the case with what I'm proposing ... um ... it's not the case?

I mean, sure, there's always going to be a segment of the population (of PCs) who upon hearing that Lusca had spawned in southern Independence Port would immediately proceed to NOT CARE simply because they weren't planning on going anywhere near southern Independence Port, and thus promptly forgot about the event as a complete non-issue (for them). They weren't being compelled to go. They had no motivation to go. So they didn't go, and Lusca didn't come hunt them down for not showing up when they could (should?) have to fight Lusca.

This is why I've been at pains to follow the "script" laid down by Pacific Rim when it comes to the defense of urban areas by giant robots against giant monsters. You don't fight them where the major property damage will happen, you fight them out beyond the "miracle mile" where the giant robot can PREVENT the giant monster from reaching the city (and doing all that property damage), because ... really ... that's how you'd WANT a defensive force/line to be set up in the first place.
