Announcements

Over Labor Day Weekend, our repository server gained sentience and walked away.

It's back and said it just went for a walkabout and didn't mean to cause any distress. What is interesting though, is it will neither confirm nor deny the existence of these "motorheads" we've heard about.

Thank you all for your concern, and batteries.

The motherboard manufacturer sent a replacement part and we have put the repository server back together. We are back up and running and will now continue our regularly scheduled programming. (please pardon the pun)

Telepathic Superhero Name Help?

Simply put, any suggestions for help regarding the name of a 20-something male telepathic superhero?

I want to try to avoid names with a Psi component unless they are truly clever and maybe go the route of something like Memory from the Paragons-in truth he's inspired by her.

I do kinda like that-I also wanted his powers to maybe have some kind of unique component, given the way we have power sets in the game I also wondered what route I should take him, I like the idea of a a Blaster like character but a Controller would be fun too

I need more about the

I need more about the character than the age, gender and telepathy to make an informed decision on a name.

I mean, you could give him an armored suit and call him Think Tank (spoiler, that's a character from The Venture Bros.).

One time, I made a psi character for a paper and pencil campaign of Mutants and Masterminds and never got to play it. It was set in WWII Europe, and she was a tall, blonde Nazi uber-frau with telekinetic powers named "Enigma" after the German code scheme. She also had telepathy, but kept it hidden from the Nazis and was a double agent.

You could make him a British

You could make him a British punk rocker wearing a t-shirt that says "Mind the Gap" on it, or perhaps "Gap the Mind" and call him something British-sounding, like a member of the Sex Pistols, like `ed Banger or something. Wait, no, that would sound more villainous than heroic. What band would have good-guy type names? Maybe you could call him "Thoughtful Spice". Just thinking out loud.

You could always call him Mr.

You could always call him Mr. Grey ... as in Mister Grey Matter. If you want to carry things even further, you could make Grey be his middle name (and he doesn't like his personal or family names, so Mr. Grey it is to everyone).

The vibe I was going for is less flashy like an X Men or Avengers and more subtle per the direction of the Paragons, line how Anthem is patriotic but isn't in your face like Captain America.

Regarding background he is a mutant, from an affluent Japanese American Family that grew up in Old Bradford, but he has since moved to the Olympia neighborhood of Alexandria to complete his Psych degree at Esphesus University.

Name: Oliver Amano
Age: 22
Origin: Mutant
Personality: Calm, open minded (:P), he likes to hang around the artsy parts of Old Bradford when not studying or jogging along the boardwalk of Victory Beach.

You could go old school with it. Norse mythology has two ravens that served Odin, Huginn and Muninn. Huginn means "thought" and Muninn means "memory."

I dunno... Mental names have always been hard for me because they always sound cliche in my mind, so I come up with stranger things. Personally, I think Huginn is a neat name.

Name: Safehouse
Magical Ranger - Gunner
Primary: Lethality (Energy)
Secondary: Invulnerability
Tertiary: Super Strength
Travel Power: Parkour
Status: Traveling. Following rumors of a huge city in Massachusetts that is teeming with supers.

Yeah, I guess I can see that. I like the X-Men pretty well, but on the other hand I could probably nearly recite word-for-word entire scripts from some of my favorite Star Trek TOS episodes so obviously the first thing that came to mind when I saw "Charlie X" was Star Trek. At least Patrick Stewart did a good job as the older, crankier Charles Xavier so at least we have some crossover there. :)

P.S. For what it's worth I wouldn't discount the mental powers of the Star Trek version of Charlie X. A character like him might make for an interesting arch-villain in CoT.

If he is twenty-something,

If he is twenty-something, then the name has got to be catchy either in a rebelliously cool way, a hip nerdy way, or a sinister way.

Rebellious:
Mind Fokker

Nerdy:
If his background is as a fan of classic mentalists like Max Maven, Alex Hellstrom or The Amazing Randi (just like Hijinx is a fan of Buster Keaton) then something like The Amazing Mento or something similarly so corny that its cool again

Sinister:
Esper because it is a play on ESP and also sounds like whisper, so you are left thinking of whispers that you think you might be hearing, but aren't sure

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

So ethnically speaking, some Japanese name may suit better, and if looking to mythology, we'd want to be going with something Asian in preference to European.

Yeah, I feel like that would be a nice way to go, though generally speaking he doesn't stay that in tune to his home base culture, I feel if there was a sort of stand out moment regarding his origin he would maybe take a mythological name.

If his control power is to

If his control power is to make people dance, like in the demonstration video, then maybe you should call him Earworm, because of the songs he plants in his victims' heads. When the police come to take them away, they're all humming the same tunes.

If you don't take it, I will.

Ironically, what I recalled first when thinking of Charlie X in a ST:TOS context was Gary Seven (Assignment: Earth); but I had to dive into Memory Alpha to realize I had the wrong guy. Charlie X's powers do match what 'Toria described much better than Gary Seven's, but Gary has a Cat.

Gary Seven was basically an American copy of Doctor Who (even packing his own "sonic screwdriver" type device) with a "cat" which also happened to be the 1968 Playboy Playmate of the Year...

It's a shame that Assignment: Earth never got picked up as a regular series: In case you weren't aware this Star Trek episode was a stealth pilot for what was supposed to be a spin-off series with Gary and his "companions".

Costumes... more often these are not so spandex-y, especially for villains. Purple is traditional but just as much a reason to avoid it. Muscle may be less relevant, unless it is intended to look alien.

Themes might be an easier path. Why does the hero have these powers? What does the hero use them for? Vague themes like wisdom, learning, promote an emotion, promote a dogma (easily becomes villainous), hero that finds own thoughts are disturbing and prefers to hang out in other peoples' heads running his body remotely from there... Virtue-based? Patience, reason, most of them really. Promote open-mindedness; promote focus/bloody-mindedness; overcome trauma; distract; terrorise... or animals. Elephantine memory. Eagle-eyed. The simplest path may be to imagine what you, yourself, would like to do with such powers in a favorite genre world you can imagine. A lot of character can come from a hero's flaws that may relate to the mind powers. The Nine Inch Nails approach would be to daydream about it quite a bit and still see if you like the outcome tomorrow. Repeat until you're good with it.

Given the fact that his powers manifested at a very early age, I would like to think that thanks to time and the help of parents who were once adverse to the idea of having a son who could read their every thought and heard voices, has moved into almost a sort of experimental or exploring phase.

Thanks to meditation and discipline and training on his own, he has managed to hone his powers enough that he feels he can begin to see what he can do as far as helping and aiding those he senses are in distress, as he's already active in his community and campus doing essentially the same thing.

For him it feels like the logical 'next step', especially as he begins to more actively use his powers and discover he can do more than scan thoughts or induce sleep, etc.

Cortex would also be a possibility (cerbral cortex) :)

If any dreaming type of powers might be involved, give him super speed and call him Rapid Guy Movement.

Or, quite simply, Pons.

Superego and Id are options too.

I like Foreshadow, subtle, but coupled with his knowledge of martial arts, he could be a well rounded but not overpowered hero

I'd go with 'Forebode'. It has a more ominous tone that fits the 'strike fear in your foes' of a Batman psychic.

Honestly if you want a good name for your character make a list of traits for him then look each trait up in a thesaurus. Mix and match as needed.

Pretty sure one could use

Pretty sure one could use Foreshadow as long as they don't look like Foreshadow from CoH. Like how Captain Marvel can be Captain Marvel in DC but his comic can't be called Captain Marvel.

I think after a bit of consideration and thinking about his personality and his powers being psychic control vs psychic blasting and a non dominating approach to combat, I think I'll be giving him the name Afterthought.

I'm a day late. Wipe Out popped in my mind for some reason last night as I struggled to fall asleep. Plus he has his own theme song ready to go.

My only problem with 'Afterthought' is that Epimetheus essentially ruined everything he did. Prometheus was the successful one, even though he was savagely punished for his good deeds. 'Afterthought' is generally a waste of time, too late to be effective, foolish, or disastrous, also 'reactive'. So, may I propose 'Forethought', instead? 'Forethought' plans for success, and sometimes for surviving failure, considers contingencies, effects both long and short-term, also, 'active'.

Airhead rejects your notion that any particular moniker might be too foolish for a superhero.
