As a player walking around in

As a player walking around in the game world, what types of crime are going to be identifiable in game? What will I see NPCs (and or PCs) doing that I can thwart? How sophisticated and nuanced will it be? What types of crime will require players to enter instanced content, and will they have to be tipped off by some sort of contact?
- Simple street crimes should be easy to spot (like purse snatching)
- A thug casing a house or business to rob it, or flying a drone to spy on someone
- Bank robbery, cargo heist, etc (essentially stealing something from a location or a group)
- Breaking any law that doesn't involve theft or direct bodily harm?

As a player walking down the street will my alignments impact what my character identifies as a crime?

As a Redside character, how does that change the answers to the above? What opportunities will be available to those characters?

How will Redside / Blueside content mesh out on the streets? Will I see a purse snatcher on one side of the street and local law enforcement apprehending a suspect on the other?

If one wished to play a stealth/spy character or even an Invisible Ghost-like character, what character type would this be? I looked at all of them and none really seemed to apply.

Also, the buildings in one part of CoT are expected to be Art Deco style. Is there a discussion thread for the design of them ? Is there in general a place for architecture designs more than character designs ?

From what I have read here stealth/invisibility will come primarily from tertiary power pools thus the AT is completely up to you. There will be some masteries that take advantage of stealth/invis (only in Enforcer so far that I know of) but won't grant the ability to enter stealth/invis.

concept art is always fun--even with a disclaimer that the end result may not look anything like the art presented.

and maybe some lore like Martian activity has been picking up recently. and something about their failed invasion in the 50's.

and speaking of Martians. Is it possible for players to get a martian gun? It would be cool to become a hero just by picking up a fallen weapon and turning it back on the invaders. That's a hero/villain concept all in itself.

See our updrate on Momentum, which briefly discusses Reserves. Reserves are the CoT version of inspirations with a dofferent take on the mechanics.

I hope so. I can easily see groups forming around issues that are not easily placed in the alignment spectrum, with members having positions all over it. Consider Mr. Kuryakin and Mr. Solo in the recent "Man from U.N.C.L.E." movie, for example.

Hero teams: Do we all have to have the same style/colors of uniforms? That is not the case in comics. Whats to keep a teams from just wearing their preferred outfits?

I think it would be neat if Super Groups could set some parameters in-game - like preferred colours, symbol, costume pieces, etc, so we could have a "supergoup outfit", kind of like the X-Men (blue/gold and an "X"), Fantasic Four (blue/white and a "4"), Green Lanterns (green, black, ring, lantern symbol) and so forth.

That said I don't think it should be mandatory - it should just be another costume - maybe have a special slot for super-groups?

That's kind of how it worked in CoX. SGs could specify their logo and two colors. In lieu of an additional costume slot, each costume had the ability to "patch" the logo in somewhere a logo normally goes (e.g. chest insignia) and could swap in the SG colors on a part-by-part basis.

There were some odd bugs in that process, of course. Most of us opted for using a costume slot for an SG uniform so we could design the whole thing right. It was tricky, but some SGs figured out a way to describe all the settings and posted "official costumes" on their sites.

When the game goes live, the official forums does too.
I have been to a number of official game forums that are infested with trolls. They will allow no serious discussion. Those game sites don't care to invest in any moderation. Or the mods will say, "I believe in free speech, so I will allow trolls to deny you yours." To get a decent conversation you have to find a private forum run by fans.

PLEASE. official COT forums will be the first place players will turn to for help and camaraderie.
[u]Will you please have decent moderation on those official forums?[/u] Even if you must rely on volunteers, we may need some Hard @$$es who will Ban the trouble makers.

Our current forums are filled with fans who love the genre....I just know what is going to happen.

While we are talking about NPCs. Can we talk about how we script them?
I don't know if this is discussed elsewhere in another topic, if it is, please give me a link so I can discuss this there instead of here.

Let's say we have an actor (NPC) named Fred,
It seems to me that there is a first level of conversation that anyone can talk to our actor Fred.
This is generally small-talk and maybe dropping a few names of Fred's friends or where he says a summary of a recent fight that took place within a few blocks of where he sits. This conversation could be stored as a generic script perhaps indexed by time of day, (so what he says at night is different than what is said in the day or early morning) This script would need some inputs that the system would provide, like the actor's name, the actor's alignment, actor's current location, crowd of players and non-players that are nearby and other useful context.

I would like to see the ability to have a tag-cloud around each of the NPCs and PCs with tags like "gun-slinger" or "seeking justice" or "Oriental" or "American" or "flyer" or the opposite not-flyer or not-thief or not-police etc. Then our script can look at the tag cloud for special actions that the NPC has when talking to the "AeroPirate" or "gossipy" PCs.

Hopefully, the script language would have the ability to call scripts, to return results from the script, to check a condition (including those with tags) for failure or success, and maintain variables that could be used to iterate or see if the PCs been seen before or given a quest before.

This seems like a very useful set of scrpting commands. Does anyone else have ideas about this?

As long as they don't recreate existing characters I'm sure it would be legally allowed since you can't copyright a concept. Patents would be right out (some might try but I'm sure they would loose) and trademark/trade dress would most likely be limited to the character/costume as a whole and/or specific identifying marks.

Though from a practical point I think MWM would do it as a one-handed or two-handed closed fist emanation point with you having to add the ring as part of the costume. Not sure that having rings as an actual prop would be that beneficial.

Must agree with this. As much as I and other anons may enjoy counter trolling, continued moderation is a real plus.

We already have a moderation team in place of course. And they have had a beneficial effect for quite a while now. I would hope on the official forums they will have a greater presence as the ones for CoH did. But for now they seem to be doing their job very well.

You can't(shouldn't) eat

You can't(shouldn't) eat fishmen for the same reason you can't(shouldn't) eat dolphins. As top level predators in the oceans they collect large amounts of heavy metals like Lead and Mercury in their bodies. Their meat is basically poison. Also eating sentient creatures...would definitely put big minus on your morality bar.

Related, but not; two of the main badgehunting channels on Union died slow agonising deaths because of this sort of thing. Basically, we had trolls who liked to claim their rights to free speech while harassing others and denying them those self-same rights, because we had no way of keeping them out, short of setting the channel to private. This was fine except it meant new players wouldn't be able to find the channels from the channel search window (there was that NPC in Atlas) and would effectively be denied the benefit of joining a dedicated, knowledgeable and helpful channel for badgehunting. Now imagine a channel dedicated to helping new players, a la the Novice Network in FFXIV, with the same problems (etc).

I would like to not go through that again. Moderating those channels left a perpetual sour taste in my mouth, not because of the trolls per se, but because of my lack of options as a moderator, and the feeling of déjà vu I got every time I logged in. To wit, please enable the banning of players from global channels. Thanks.

Forgot to add the question: have you thought about this sort of thing yet and if so, do you feel you have an effective means of addressing this concern?

Unless you guys really want to blow this place up, these [i]are[/i] the official forums. This is partly because this record is a primary accountability mechanism to our Kickstarter backers. Real artists ship.

We just don't have any full-time forum mods right now. Minotaur and Shadow Elusive are the ones to go to (in that order) if someone's being a jerk.

We're almost done getting a proper Terms of Use in place. It's got several clauses that all boil down to Wheaton's Law. Even so, we've reserved the right to smack down other idiots in there, too, so even if something seems iffy, talk to Minotaur or Shadow.

I was a moderator in one of the largest and active channels on Champion that was related to badges, monsters, and task/strike forces that was set [i]to[/i] Private for exactly the same reasons as above. And trust me when I say that it did not limit the number of people who wished to join the channel. In fact, I had to request people to have their alt accounts leave the channel to make room for new people because we were at the max capacity on numerous occasions, which they were happy to oblige. This was before we discovered a method of removing accounts from the channel that were inactive over X number of days.
Mind you, I was referred to as the Blue Banhammer (amongst other less sanitary and more colorful metaphors), so having those options, and specifically using them, definitely gives you a different set of problems. I might've had 99 problems, but trolls weren't one. One of the best tools at my disposal as an active moderator were Global Notes. I would always, and I mean [i]always[/i] note the time/date and severity of the infraction along with the course of action taken. This, along with chat logs, mostly prevented people from saying that I was abusing my power or that the enforcement of the rules weren't justified.
Which begs the question (which I might've asked this before); will there be the option to log chat and will there be global notes?

Speaking just for myself, I'd like to presume yes, simply because named streets and street signs are commonplace in American cities. We've already had MWM produce and release some tech demonstration video where a street sign was (briefly) visible (and hilarious to see due to the content of the signs).

Build for One, but Expect To Support More is essentially the mindset you want to be working with for this. And since things like street names are very compartmentalized bits of information, it shouldn't be that onerous to farm out to volunteers the necessary translation work for adding a column of language localization for them to the Master Table that contains this information in an Excel Spreadsheet CSV format, where the Rows are the street names and the Columns are the language those names are to be presented in. Column A is thus the English column (by default) and all the others are just Columns B, C, D, etc. beyond that, and all the game client has to do is cross reference Row+Column correctly to pull the right information from the table to populate the mouseover popup on screen while playing the game. The actual ART for the street signs remains unchanged, but because you can get the information from them without needing to get close enough to "read" them on your monitor, the actual Art Asset only needs a single skin/texture for it, while the content of the mouseover popups varies depending on the localization of the client language.

This creates an inherently extensible system that is "friendly" to future modifications and additions.

That's the way I'd imagine this sort of thing being done. Whether it will be or not is a different question.

I would like to discuss the signs themselves. I have seen several different styles of signs.

The post with a green sign parallel to one street and a green sign parallel to the other street is one choice.

A stone pylon with the names of streets vertically along the faces of the pylon

A street lamp with the signs hanging from two posts, each parallel to the street.

The names of the streets along the curb of the road, perhaps in tile, parallel to the street.

The name and block number of the streets on the building sitting on that corner. This is usually in readable characters, but part of the building itself.

The names on a shelter on the corner, such as a telephone booth, a smoking space, or a bus or tram stop.

Speaking of trams, are we going to have electric trolleys on any streets in Titan City?
(i.e. with the wires above them powering their movement down the streets)
Alternately, a light rail could be powered by an internal engine or actual train engine with a trailing caboose.

Could you tell us where we can talk to the artists currently designing stuff?

HAIR attacks. the toon has long hair that lashes out at the enemy. can be used for melee or for entangles.
