“’In memoriam.’ All these warriors….” Themis looked out at the rows upon rows of spare white tombstones stretching like a sea before her and Ares at the Titan City National Cemetery. “You may have taken them, but most died in my name, you know.”
“Oh, this again!” the god of war groaned. “I don’t even know why I bother meeting with you. It’s always this ‘they died for justice’ line with you, again and again!”
The titan goddess of justice laughed lightly. “You know why, even if you protest! You flirt with the idea that the best of your work has a brighter, higher purpose. That it’s not just mere destructive urges writ large. And hope springs eternal, of course.” She winked suggestively at him.
The god of war groaned again at her teasing. “Bah! [i]You[/i] are the one who uses [i]me![/i] They [i]all[/i] think they have justice behind them! They wouldn’t fight, otherwise. And I [i]can[/i] resist you!”
Themis adjusted her gown and pressed her arms together in a shrug of feigned innocence that accentuated her cleavage. “You think so? I only get what I deserve, always.”
“I suppose that’s fair,” Ares grumbled half-heartedly as his eyes were drawn to the curves displayed before him. “But let’s be clear—I don’t need you. I really am more powerful.”
“You’re more powerful [i]with[/i] me,” she breathed, leaning in toward him.
Ares' lips tightened in frustration and he frowned. His eyes darted about the cemetery again. No one without the Sight could see them here in the spirit world, and that was as it should be. The Memorial Day visitors wandered the paths and up and down the rows of markers, pausing here and there to read the stones or lay flowers at a loved one’s grave. It was peaceful, and to Areas a fitting reminder of the tribute he was due.
“What do you have in mind?” he finally asked her, reluctantly.
Themis smiled. “I want you to show me your power, Ares. This should be my city—Titan City—and there are some who have been eluding my reach.” She stepped in closer and slipped her arms around his neck. Gazing into his eyes, she whispered, “Let’s start something!”

The TCPD sent out an urgent call to any hero who could help. It was wide-band, and wasn’t limited to specific security levels. They needed all the help they could get.

Jackie and Diana chased each other's RC hovercraft up and down the street while Marianne Michelle Morrison cooked burgers and hot dogs at the grill, and Millicent Siobhan O’Brian drifted off into sleep on the chaise lounge.
The dream was somewhat unexpected. It had been years since She had appeared in Millie's dreams, and this warning was as cryptic as ever. "There is trouble brewing," Brigid told her, "and may boil over."
Millie awoke with a start, and Marianne's sixsight gave her only a second of warning. "We need eyes out," said Millie. "Trouble is brewing, and may boil over, but a watched pot..."
"Never boils," finished her wife and partner. "We've got what, seven Blue Tails? How 'bout you fire them up while I finish grilling?"

And so seconds after the alert came across the airwaves, it was joined by Tinker Belle advising heroes and police of the websites of the six drones deployed to assist them in locating trouble spots. The seventh, not mentioned, was deployed over there own neighborhood, to notice any threats to their children....

D-Day stood at the memorial with a few other vets. All were in dress uniform he was the only one in a World War II uniform. How many times has he done this seeing old faces replaced by new. All with the same expression of a survivor, a soldier, a vet. Interesting the oldest vet there was standing next to a fellow from Afganistan one of the newest vets. The fellow looked over "does it ever get easier sir?"
He looked over and yes down. Being supercharged he was nearly 8 feet tall. "I pray every day that it doesn't. Sure you have fancier weapons, better armor. Still I see your faces and I know if you been there at Normandy you will charge in like the rest of us."
"From you, that's a very high opinion."
"From by view, it's fact. Many of us were drafted, you went because you felt you needed to. Be it Terrorist or Nazis I'm still sure you be signing up."
That was when he heard gunfire and turned. He activated his com listening in. "Of all the time..."
"Sir, seems you have work to do still. I would gladly lend you a hand... however." He rolled up his sleeve showing the fake arm "Seems I left my spare in Afganistan. Think I still had the middle finger extended."
D-Day smiles "You already served enough Soldier." He gave a salute then took off.
"This is D-Day reporting in. I have gunfire two blocks from the Memorial wall. Any idea what the situation is? Even when gangs are at war with each other they tend to do drive by and raids. Open fighting don't seem to be the norm. Any Psychics picking up some kind of mental manipulation?"

"No, sir," the TCPD Threat Dispatch officer reported to D-Day, "we don't have any clue, yet. The gangs and usual villain groups are just... fighting each other. You've got some of it in the open, and some attacks on each others' headquarters and territory, where it can be located." The dispatcher paused. "It's giving us a hell of a look at where these cockroaches actually hide away from the light, but it's also putting everyone else at risk, too."
"We've got good drone camera feeds coming in, plus a bunch of heroes are helping out to get a handle on the situation. Near the wall... you've got some Rooks and Firebrands, by the look of them, halfway between 5th and 6th on Benson. Looks like five or six Rooks and maybe three Firebrands. Two officers in the area, but not equipped to handle a group of that size. Can you assist, sir?"

"On my way to 5th and 6th Benson. Inform the officers to get non-combatants out the area. I take on the Rooks and Firebrands." D-day flew in and landing with as much show off effect he could trying to draw the fighters attention.
"I'm assuming it's too late to ask you folks, to sit down and talk it out?" He stands up and cracks his neck "Either you stop fighting and tell me what's going on or I beat the daylights out of all of you and the last one standing tells me. Either way, I want answers."
D-day was taking a slight risk his powers are kinetic based. The more damage he takes the stronger and tougher he was. The one downside is that the first blow if done right could overwhelm him, or a sniper shot when he wasn't prepared could kill him. Luckily, it was something no one thinks about one of the benefits of surviving bomb explosions. People tend to assume they best way to take him down is bigger explosions.

The toy hovercraft were put away, and the grill had been shut down and the family had gone inside. Most of them, at any rate...
The "cycle" the Duchess rode had no wheels, and in fact no moving parts other than a few switches, coolant and fuel pumps, and the gambles that the reactionless thrusters used to point where they were needed. She flew above the city while Tinker Belle watched through the eyes of the Blue Tail drones to find where the fighting most needed to be cooled down. For now, though, she headed toward the Memorial, dressed in a slightly updated version of the cowboy outfit she'd used to wear almost a decade ago. The pistols, though, looked even less like they belonged in the western holsters, being the latest hand blasters to have come out of their secret labs.
She set her cycle down between the Memorial and a firefight, and walked up behind a man in an old uniform who was addressing the combatants. Recognizing him from her history classes, she waited respectfully for him to finish his conversation before introducing herself, keeping a wary eye on the gangs. "D-Day? I'm the Duchess, here ta help out."

D-Day had their attention, that was certain. Some telekinetic threw a dumpster at him.
One of the Firebrand pyros yelled at him, "Out of the way, old man! These punks have betrayed us for the last time! They're goin' down!" Then, he hurled a firebolt at the "Werner's Appliance" sign hanging over several of the Rooks. It burst into pieces and rained hot metal and plastic on the other crooks.

The Duchess pulled out one of her pistols, thumbed it to stun, and fired from the hip. The UV laser ionized a path, and an electrical charge was sent down the path towards the telekinetic.

The teek went down, properly tazed. The Duchess caught a muttered, "Damned capes," and the remaining Rooks ducked back into the alley, leaving the heroes with the Firebrands and their wounded or stunned companions.

In a different part of the city, a green and gold costumed heroine was doing her best to break up a fight between a swarm of robots and some sort of mad scientist group hell-bent on capturing them. Gayle Force used her wind powers to blow the robot formations apart as her aerial servants provided cover from the technopaths. "Come on, guys!" she yelled over the rushing wind. "Cut it out and get out of here! You're making it dangerous for everyone!"
"Mind your own business, nature chick!" one of the villains yelled back. "It's long past time to put these little metal creeps down and get 'em back into the lab where they belong!"
"Exterminate scientific control threats," droned the composite voice of dozens of robots. "Exterminate."
Gayle sighed and pumped more force into her powers. This was shaping up to be a long day already.

At that same time that 'Nature Chick' felt a firm tap on his shoulder, a deep but feminine voice said. "Only her friends are allowed to call her that." He turned only to be eyeballing the ample chest of the heroine who had spoke. He looked up at the masked face of Liberty Girl and smiled feebly. She grabbed a fistful of his lab coat and straight-armed him into the air like he was a feather. "Now... of the two of us, who do you think is actually on that list?"
The mad scientist laughed weakly, then his eyes rolled up in his head and he went limp. "Yo nature girl, check it out. Three points!" she said as she she lofted the scientist into the air and he landed in an industrial dumpster full of sawdust, a plume of shavings erupting upon impact. She leapt over to the dumpster, checked to make sure the villain was upright and breathing, then grabbed a section of chain-link fencing and used it to create an impromptu lid.
She turned to face the rest of the two groups. "Awright, who's next?"

His Superhero landing wasn't just for show. Falling so many feet from the air gave him a boost on impact enough to easily take the hit of the dumpster and send it to some of the fleeing Rooks. "Sorry, Dutchess I'm afraid I don't know enough about all the young folks nowadays to recognise you. So I fear we have to improvise a dance number."
With the Rooks running he focused in the three firebrands and charged his fist glowing with the build up energy. He jumped at the last moment and slams the ground releasing the charge in a blast of light and force.

Gayle laughed. "From the back court, even!"
"Time to clean up the streets!" Hovering out of reach above the street, she whipped the winds higher and caught up some of the little robots in the vortex. "And take out the trash, too! Hey, 'Lexa! I think we need a recycling bin along with that dumpster!" A pair of gravel trucks across a nearby parking lot would do. She maneuvered the tornado and its swirling baggage in that direction.
"Exterminate heroes!" squeaked a toaster-sized robot, flailing its leg appendages as it spun with the others in the air. Using up all its energy, it let out a wide burst of electricity.
"Ow!" Gayle exclaimed. "Little bugger bit me! Kinda."
One of the mad scientist types finished frantically jiggering a device and pressed the activation button with a gleeful, "Yes!" There was a dull "THUMP-SNAP!" as neighborhood electrical circuits all overloaded, creating a local electro-magnetic pulse. The robots--and everything else not shielded for a city block around the fighting--went dead.

A drone was within that burst, but it was shielded somewhat beyond military specifications. The pulse interrupted its communications for about two seconds, and caused a momentary flutter in its holographic camouflage, revealing that it was labeled "BTX-4", and then it resumed normal operations according to its programming. Which including taking a closer look at anything that might be considered an attack, so it maneuvered itself over the middle of the burst area.
Back by the Memorial, the Duchess laughed. "Yeap, seven decades of new heroes will do that." Since D-Day seemed to have the situation under control, she pulled a device out of a pocket and started using it to bind and tag the downed Firebrands' legs. Then, apparently hearing something over her com, she said, "Whups, seems somebody's causing a bit of a power outage. I'm gonna go see what I can do to help there!" She hopped back on her 'cycle and flew towards the site of the mad scientist/robot battle, watching for anything that seemed more urgent.

"I make sure those Rooks don't double back then I shall head there myself." He accessed the citywide hero channel. "This is D-Day there more to this than meets the eye. To many groups fighting at the same time don't make any sense someone's pulling strings. Look for clues or see if you can get some answers. Folks above all do your best to keep the civilians out of the hot spots."
He gave one last look after the firebrands were teleported away then flew into the air after Duchess.
That was when a student static feedback went over the com than a woman's voice "Hello... this thing on? Greetings out there in Hero land this is Hotwire the face of Villain T.V. coming to you live from a secret lair. Oh no, I'm not part of whatever going on I'm just pissed off someone cutting into my profits. So I'm joining you at least for the time being. No one messes up V.T.V.! And that bastard that took down the grid fried one of my dishes!"
Duchess would see a wire snap and jump as an electrical charge came out of it and strike a few random electrical items. These then jumped themselves as bits and pieces flew up and reformed into a semi-human shape. What wasn't metal was soon filled with lights as a hologram took shape in the now constructed mobile holo-emitter. Forcefield emitters activated as well and a pair of energy blades formed from the metal braces on the arms. "Okay, Techno-dork it's show time!" Then the Hologram girl ran for the mad scientist.

The lab-coated villains drew back in obvious dismay. "Georgie! Force field! Now!" cried the taller one as Hotwire approached.
"Got it...." The shorter one was bent over a tablet-sized control panel. With a ZZZPT! noise, the pair were surrounded by a shimmering bubble of distortion.
"Let's get out of here!" The mad scientists began backing away, the taller one fumbling as he tried to pull some sort of ray gun from a messenger bag.
Gayle smiled. "Oh, I don't think you're going anywhere, force field or not!" She raised her hand and the force field and its occupants bobbed into the air, buoyed up by the wind like an inflatable pool toy on the surface of the water.
The mini-robots seemed to have been shorted out, at least for the moment. None of them were moving at all.

As the Duchess approached, it seemed that the robots were down, likely from the EMP, and the madboys were hiding in a force bubble from... Gayle Force?! She suppressed the urge to fangirl, and instead advised the scientists, "I'd surrender if I were you. Ya've ticked off Hotwire, there, bet jail will seem a lot safer." She parked her 'cycle, then treated the robots to the same secure-and-tag treatment she'd used earlier.
"On the other hand, if you made these robots, I have to ask why you were fighting them. If they ain't sapient, they just do as they're programmed to. And if they are sapient..." She stood up after securing the robots, and placed her right hand on her weapon. "Let's just say I'm firmly against child abuse, and the nature of the children makes no difference ta me."

Liberty Girl bent up the chain link lid of the dumpster, then bounded over till she was standing under the bouncing ball. She hunkered down into the characteristic pose of someone ready to receive a volleyball. "Feed me a little service, Gayle!" she hollered, a grin on her face.

A jolt of energy and it jerked and reconfigured into a floating camera drone. "Hotwire here for a Villain T.V. special event! For all those who aren't trying to splatter someone's else's brains, that is. I'm here with a group of Heroes... yes you heard that right. Don't worry I'm not turning over a new leaf. It's one of those join forced to stop a greater threat thing."
Hearing Liberty girl "OH, I like that idea!" Hotwire said as she squatted down behind Liberty Girl. Acting like a catcher however given those energy blades are still out... "How about a fastball!"
D-Day came flying down when he spotted the Duchess. "I see this group already been taken care of. Is that Gayle Force I see? Maybe now we can find the cause of this outbreak."

Floating down near Alexa, a heroine clad in red, gold, and white glowing with golden energy grins. "Been a while since I served LB, but I can give it a shot." Lady Nova chimes and grins, before radioing in.
"This is Lady Nova-Rooks and Firebrands are nearly handled on 5 and 6th Benson, any areas nearby that are still hot?"

I think these little bots are some part of the Motorheads--those swarm AI things--but I don't even recognize what group the science-boys are with."
The heroes with decently shielded electronics heard the dispatcher's response to Lady Nova's question. "Rooks and Firebrands received in containment, got it, thanks, Lady Nova. Motorhead swarm and Science Madness reported at your location, at least before something knocked out power in that area. We've got some heavies at Victory Beach Park going at it. It looks like some of the members of the Deadly 7 and the Infernians. Extremely dangerous. Multiple officers and civilians down. Assistance requested."
"Oh, crap...," muttered Gayle. "There goes the party."

As she started up her 'cycle, she sent a message back to Tinker Belle; a few minutes later BTX-4 went back into search mode.
Meanwhile, BTX-6 left the vicinity of the Central Library in Alexandria, where a twenty-five foot long dragon was facing down a gang who had only pistols, switchblades, and molotov cocktails, and was headed up to Victory Beach to put an eye on that situation...

Lady Nova immediately perked up at the mention of the Deadly 7, and was wreathed in golden energy as she prepared to take flight. "Tell them that heroes are on the way and to not openly engage, focus on civilian safety!" With that, she takes flight towards Victory Beach, landing where she sees the most action occuring, landing with a bit of 'oomph' to knock a few Infernian mooks off their feet, before surveying the situation.

Liberty Girl bent the chain-link back into place to trap the three scientists, then prepared to follow Gayle. Before she could, a white bracelet on her wrist lit up and she tapped her ear. Nodding as a voice spoke to her, she then contacted Gayle who had already flown off. "Good luck at Victory Beach, Nature Girl. Some heavy hitters are needed in the NERD. Stay safe out there." she said before leaping off in the direction of the Research District.

Already on scene at Victory Beach, a swinging Whipcrack spun to dodge a blow from Beatdown, then slapped the strongman on top of his head as he whipped past. The slap only served to further enrage the brute and he turned to leap after the agile hero. He shot out a 'glob' of psionic energy that stuck to Beatdown's face, briefly obscuring his vision, then fired an elastic strand at a concrete loading dock. As the flying Beatdown flailed past Whipcrack, he attached the other end of the elastic strand to the villain.
The strand quickly grew taut, then snapped back like a bungee cord and sent Beatdown crashing into the loading dock.
Whipcrack paused while crouched on a wall, then looked around to see where he was needed most. His eye was drawn to a an approaching golden glow, but he shook his head. She'd been gone for months now. As he started to look off in another direction, he subconsciously flicked his eyes back to the glowing individual, who landed in the center of things and dissipated the glow. With the light show gone, he could see that it was indeed Sarah Holt aka Lady Nova, his former partner and girlfriend. Without really thinking about it, he suddenly found himself swinging rapidly in her direction.
He landed hard only a few feet away, his own armor disappearing, and the first thing that came out of his mouth was "JUST EXACTLY WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?!?!"

"Oh don't get your panties in a bind Duchess." She turned to the camera "Heard that folks Duches here wants me to explain how someone else used an EMP to kill the swarm motorhead drones. We all know they individually have the mental ability of an ant. What did I do? Rebuild it and now it's a hovering camera drone. What would Little miss hero do? Collect the scraps and put it in a box for evidence where it will sit for who knows how long. And she giving me a guilt trip Ha!" Turning to the Duchess "So Duchess is it me or are you aggressive to any woman better looking than you?"
D-Day rolls his eyes "Ladies and I use the term loosely in one case. There a Deadly 7 attacking we have a bit more to deal with then arguing." He leaped up in the air heading to Victory Beach.
"Fine, I even do a peace offering." She takes off the energy blade devices and tossed them to the Duchess "Got the blueprints from some lab in NERD... not sure what lab. Kind of hard to know when in the networks around there." She then smiled and returned to looking at the camera "Well Folks time for a commercial break as I head to another mad break out event! At the TCPD dispatch and threat center, a friendly AI had stepped in to organize the response. "Attention, crisis responders, this is the Chromed Accountant supporting TCPD threat response. We have determined that there is no factual cause for any of the threat groups' stated provocations. Instead, they have the illusion of a slight or provocation that has not actually occurred. They are basing their animosity and violent actions on these imagined slights. Only groups--and not individual criminals or identified villains not belonging to groups--have been affected. This phenomenon is limited to the Titan City metropolitan boundaries. It has not affected known villain groups at sea or immediately adjacent to Titan City. Our hypothesis is that this is some sort of mind influence or control effect. On the local com "I get Beatdown's attention you all wear down his defenses. I'm rated high in all but cold, toxic, and mental damage resistance. This fellow does not have any of those powers so I can take what he can dish out!"

Took them long enough! That's right someone playing the villain groups in the city. V.T.V. being mostly me and my minions seemed to be immune. Seems groups are affected. Me personally be looking into how said groups got the idea someone betrayed them in the first place, you know go for the source. Then again I sure the capes will figure out that soon."
"Now for the action, we have Beatdown of the Deadly Seven himself having a smashing good time in Victory beach. Place your bets now at any of V.T.V. betting polls. Remember I'm involved with this battle so all odds are calculated by Code Monkey! You better earn your pay Code!"
She came sliding by and sent a few jolts of electricity charges at Beatdown then on the com "Hey you Capes you going to do something or are you going to be busy with your reunion?"

Beatdown shrugged off everything they threw at him. After plucking the elastic off himself, he shouted at Whipcrack, "Cute, kid. You've figured out rubber bands." He smacked the nearest target, which happened to be D-Day, with a grunt of effort and a two-handed hammer fist. Spotting a "Loading Zone" sign on a post, he wrenched it up effortlessly from the concrete. The villain pulled off the metal sign from its post and flicked it at Whipcrack's lower back like a frisbee.
A demon-looking thing rose from the asphalt behind Beatdown, melting and bubbling the pavement it emerged from. Three more followed it. "Your skin and flesh will blister and burn, Pit! You are no match for us!"
Beatdown turned and threw the steel pole at the demon. The Infernian winced, cracked its neck, and hissed at the blow as it bounced off. "Pitiful."
D-Day and the others were not drawing much attention from either Beatdown or the Infernians, yet, but it was only a matter of time.

Beatdown ignored the question and grabbed for the woman on the flying motorcycle, meaning to tear her apart and get on with his assault on the demons.
At the edge of the parking lot, a shadowy image appeared and chuckled to herself. Beatdown wouldn't do much to D-Day, but trapping the old soldier in a void space--with no air--and then compressing it ought to make him into a satisfying goo. Abysm threw up a dark box, trying to trap the hero and begin the process of taking him out of action--permanently.

Skating in close Hotwire looked at Duchess "You had a Mad Scientist a lunatic who would almost guarantee to monolog, but you wait for Beatdown to start asking questions? Even Villains know not to mess around with a D7." She shakes her head "Why are you even still alive?"
She added her own electric blasts at Beatdown "Well, might as well see how many volts this guy can take."

Given D-Day was on an impact fall he had no way to avoid the blow from Beatdown. A clear case of immovable object meeting unstoppable force, D-day went flying out of control in another direction. He did impact the pavement and created a crater. Rising from the ditch he noted the strange shifting of shadows around him he calls out on the com. "ALERT THERE A DARK MANIPULATOR ABOUT!" He leaped into the air at top speed trying to avoid the trap.

"Didn't have the right questions, then. Now I do." Duchess continued to dodge both Beatdown and the demons, then heard D-Day's warning. She pulled out a different pistol, left-handed, and almost casually fired one shot with it. The projectile's trajectory met D-Day's, just above the reaching darkness, and the tachyon beacon began emitting the most slippery particles known to mad science. "Tink, we may be needing to try that experiment we've been putting off."

A woman with the lower body of a snake slithered out of the group of Infernians. Her crimson skin matched the diamond pattern of scales on her lower half. She tensed her muscles for a second and tiny, white hot flames flickered over her body. "I'll take care of the brute. Get the women."
"Yes, Salamandra," the lead demon replied with a grin. "My pleasure!"
Beatdown simply ignored the electricity. The asphalt beneath him melted. "Hmph. Technoweenies." He leaped forward a dozen meters and grabbed the snakey demoness.
"Yaah!" she exclaimed, not expecting to become the target so quickly. She uttered even more shrieks as Beatdown slid his grip down her body and spun her around by the tail. He used Salamandra as a bludgeon against the other demons and kept some distance from the heroes.
The dark matter box closed around nothing as D-Day escaped and the shadow muttered a curse. Abyss stepped through the Void and reappeared on the other side of the parking lot, much closer to Duchess. A swirling vortex of dark energy opened below her hero's cycle. The villain snickered, "I do so love breaking other people's toys!"
"I hope you can do that without air, then!" Gayle Force called as she swooped toward the amusement park lot. She quickly extended her hand, curled her fingers into a fist, and then yanked it back. All if the air in Abyss' lungs wooshed out as the green and gold-clad wind controller ripped it from her body.

Hotwire turned and spotted Abyss "Crap two of the D7. Why oh why did I go active? Oh yeah, profit." She then raced for Salamandra.
"Salamandra! Hotwire here from Villain T.V.! Do you know that someone playing the whole city? Mass fights breaking out and causing all kinds of inter Villain chaos? Are you being played? The D7 are all insane nuts so yeah I understand you fighting them but what the reason? What are the steps that led you to fight not one but two of the most deadly and insane Villains in the city? Are you suicidal?"

D-day wasn't sure what happened one moment he was trying to rush out of what looked like a trap and the next there was a Hotdog in his face. Okay, not like he hasn't been in strange situations before. Next a quick assessment is anything trying to kill me, no. Anything trying to kill anything else, no. If all else fails go with polite. "Thanks, but I'm not hungry. There a major battle going on with at least two very dangerous folks. So mind telling me where I am so I can return and help out?"

Before Lady Nova could even reply, the sign crashed into Whipcrack's back and threw him like a ragdoll across the parking lot. He tumbled for about thirty feet upon hitting the ground and was still.

The teleport deposited D-Day on a platform in what appeared to be a lab of some sort. A dark skinned woman wearing a labcoat and what looked like old-fashioned (possibly even by D-Day's standards) flight goggles greeted him with an apology, in an accent that spoke of the Deep South. "Sorry about snagging you with no warning, but there didn't seem to be time to ask you to fill out a waiver. I'm Tinker Belle, pleased to meet you." She gestured to a monitor that showed the fight at Victory Beach from about 330 feet up. Two girls, somewhat lighter than the woman, about seven or eight years old and enough alike to be sisters sat at a table in front of it eating grilled hotdogs with mustard, they turned almost as one and waved. "I can put you back pretty much wherever you want, and as high as you want, pretty fast, with no ripping apart of molecules at all. Or you can use the elevator over there. And if you feel any side-effects from the teleport, please let me know." She handed him a card with an email address and a phone number on it.

Meanwhile, in one of the park's service corridors, two uniformed police officers guided some civilians out of the area. The last, a young woman of Chinese/European descent wearing a nametag that said "H.X.Kowalski", scanned the street for demons. "Looks clear. Good luck."
"What- You are [I]not[/I] going back in there, Kowalski!"
"We need information, and I'm best equipped to get it. You need to make sure these civilians are safe. Please don't give me orders that will get me fired when I disobey them, Sarge."
The Sergeant considered some weird things she'd gotten them out of, and nodded his head. "One order then: Don't get yourself killed."
"Roger that." She slipped back into the corridor, the spells her mother had taught her seeking out demons and other dangers...

Salamandra shakily picked herself up from the ground where Beatdown had thrown her after battering her minions senseless. She drew back in disgust from the hyperactive reporter suddenly in front of her. "Suicidal? Played? What?" A look of realization crossed her face and she flipped her shoulder-length black hair away from her narrowed eyes. "Maybe we have been played!"
She glanced over at her demon minions as Beatdown finished them off with his bare hands. With a quick look around her, she said to Hotwire, "I don't like being duped. Rest assured, someone will pay for this, and I mean to find out who!" The snaky villain slithered forward into a crack in the ground that conveniently appeared before her. It closed behind her just as Beatdown started looking for his lost plaything. He spotted Gayle Force, instead, and the shadowy image of Abyss, who had sunk breathlessly to her knees.
"I'm gonna make you scream, hero!" he promised as he stalked menacingly toward the wind controller.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. A lot of guys have told me that!" she shot back.

Setting "EL5" was an energy hog, putting out as much electric energy as an arc welder. Combined with the earlier shots, it had drained the powercell. Fortunately it wasn't the last trick up the Duchess' sleeves. Another pistol came out, one that was clearly too big to have come from that holster. As she flicked the safety off, it made an ominous hum.
She took up the slack in the trigger, and a laser beam put green crosshairs on the back of Beatdown's neck....

Kowalski poked her head out the door facing the battlefield. The demons were leaving, the pop star seemed to have Abysm on the ropes, several more heroes - and maybe a villain - had arrived. And behind the door lay one of the heroes she'd seen earlier. She hope the psychopomps gathered around him weren't concluding their business.
She move in, pulling out the bag she kept where most cops keep their first aid supplies, casting a spell of healing. Behind her, the valkyrie held out a hand, and the one that looked like Mercury or Hermes shrugged and placed something in it, as if paying off a bet.

Hotwire nodded that one group of demons taken care of. If she was lucky Salamandra on her way to whoever caused this. "Code Monkey see if Salamandra has an account with us. If she does send her a letter to request her to arrive at the den. If she can give us some intel we might be able to hunt down who caused this mess. Offer her a half price deal incentive."
Concluding her talks to Code Monkey she took the opportunity that she wasn't being targeted to draw in power from around her and charge up a larger blast aimed at Beatdown. The fact she noticed that Duchess seems to have the same idea, even if she was doing it first. Hotwire would so say Duchess took the idea from her.

"So, from what I've heard about your powers, I'm thinking a sixteen foot drop right about there." A red circle appeared on the screen, next to Beatdown, and out of the lines of fire being set up by the Duchess and Hotwire. "Orientation, potential energy differential, and three... two...Bye!" The portal opened up under D-Day, moved up as he began to fall, and closed above his head less than a tenth of a second later. He would impact the ground a bare second after that...

Softly, the Duchess began counting down, "three, two, one-"
On "one" she pulled the trigger, just as a hole opened up in the air above and to the left of her target. Within the weapon, a pellet of lithium deuteride popped into the focus of an array of lasers, which fired as one. The outer layer was vaporized, compressing the remainder to fuse the deuterium. The tiny explosion (by the standards of strategic nuclear weapons, at any rate) was tapped for energy to recharge the powercell, and the rest channelled down a cylindrical force field to be released a tenth-second later, while D-Day was still ten feet above the target and to the side of the blast of plasma.
"Zero."

Gayle scooped up Abyss in a miniature tornado and sent her spinning away from Beatdown down the parkway. Then, she re-applied her air cushion and sent her phantom army after the brute. They couldn't halt his advance, and the blows of near-solid air were having no effect that she could see.
She backed up, lifting herself further away and out of reach of the villain. Gayle had a feeling that Beatdown was ready for her breath-stealing trick, so she tried another tornado to lift and hold him. It had worked on bigger things than him before.
Beatdown narrowed his eyes against the howling wind, but he wasn't being moved by it. She doubled her efforts and kept trying.

Whipcrack groaned and rolled over, the healing spell pushing several cracked and dislocated vertebrae back into place. The sign had caught him with his armor down and the only thing that had saved him from being cut in two was his enhanced durability. "Wow that hurt... so that's how it's gonna be, huh Beatdown? M'kay."
He climbed slowly to his feet and his amber psionic armor rematerialized, then began building upon itself. As the armor bulked up, it gave the illusion that he was growing taller and heavier. By the time it stopped, he was about 6'6" and as bulky as a deep-sea hard suit diver. He began at a slow trot, picking up speed until he was going full bore like a freight train aimed straight at the villain As he approached, his hands and forearms began to glow with gathered concussive energy. "Heads up, Beatclown!" he hollered just before throwing a haymaker that would connect with the force of a 155mm howitzer round.

Just as everyone focused on Beatdown D-Day appeared and slammed to the ground. He then took off running adding his own attack to the growing gang attack on Beatdown. "let me get clear! I can take his strikes, most of you can't."
Hotwire pulled back. Joining the fight might be one thing being stupid and getting near Beatdown was another thing. Much better letting the Heroes do what heroes do and take the pain. "Well, folks seems the heroes are about done wrapping up the Deadly Seven madness here. Just Beatdown standing up last. Hopefully, once he's down we can find out who caused this."
She cut the mic feed and spoke to Code Monkey. "Alright, Code Monkey has Salamandra responded?"

Beatdown saw the heroes, but he really wasn't concerned. Their attacks--individually or in concert--might hurt, but he was used to pain. Taking down Gayle Force was the only thing that was important, right now. It was the only way he was going to get Abyss free. And, he was going to enjoy hurting her.
Most people assumed that because he was big and tough that he was slow. Nothing could be further from the truth. He let the nature chick's tornado grab hold for a moment, and used it to jump start his move to the side, dodging out of the way of the easily avoidable heavy rush attacks of the heroes. As the tornado spun after him again, he used the momentary freedom from restraint to get even closer to Gayle. With a single spinning leap into the air, he closed the distance completely. Punching [i]through[/i] the phantom army figure in front of him, his fist almost reached the wind controller. Gayle went flying back a good 30 meters from the force of the blow on her air shield.
Beatdown landed from his jump-punch and moved after her. She recovered her control as he approached and reapplied the shield again.
While Gayle's attention was on the immediate threat, Abyss finally managed to gather enough presence of mind to use her own powers. Shifting through her own void-space, she slipped out of the whirlwind holding her and fell to the pavement, gasping for breath.

"Okay, knocking him out isn't an option. Oh man, this is probably gonna hurt..." Whipcrack said as his armor shrunk back down to it's normal size. He then charged right at the tanker and leapt towards him. As he did this, he fired a strand at the tank's upraised arm, sticking it to the back of his hand. With a twist of his wrist, the strand spread out like a net and Whipcrack began to run, flip and jump around Beatdown, wrapping the net-like strands around and around. He landed on the huge man's back and continued to wrap him up, crawling all over him like a spider over it's prey, trying to move fast enough to finish before the villain could break free and pound him flat.
Whipcrack leapt off of Beatdown, then began firing elastic strands at lightpoles and the edges of building roofs, trying to haul Beatdown into the air in order to deprive him of the ability to build momentum. "I hope this works."

Hotwire looked puzzled "Only a few seconds.... crap I hate running in real world time. You know how long a second is in computer time. Okay, fine keep me posted Code." Then she cut the com and looked around then noticed Abyss.
"Yo Duch Elm Disease our blasts aren't affecting tall dark and ugly. But that Abyss bitch is getting on her feet again." She said as she sent a blast of electricity at Abyss. "Let's light up the night!"
D-day knew the flow of action and seeing Whipcrack begin his wrapping attack he slowed down. "Good thinking there son. Everyone brute force attacks aren't stopping Beatdown. Change tactics Gayle Force how much control of the air do you have? Could you say create a strong vacuum say enough to suck out the air around a person till they pass out?"

When someone takes a blast equivalent to a 45mm antitank gun on the back, it's a sign... that it's time to try something else. Fortunately, it looked like Whipcrack was trying something new, so the Duchess nodded at Hotwire's suggestion and shifted her attention to Abysm. Whipcrack's strands had completely entangled the juggernaut, and Beatdown's frustration was showing. "Goddammit, kid! You sure are pissing me off!"
Beatdown tried to flex, rip, and snap the elastic, but the nimble strand-slinger had already landed enough of them to make this a losing battle. Connecting the other ends off to something useful, on the other hand, was its own challenge. If Whipcrack held onto the strands connected to the villain, he was at the mercy of Beatdown's flailing and relative immovability. If he connected strands to other objects, first, then he still had to connect those strands to the existing web, and Beatdown wasn't going to make that an easy task.
Duchess' shot was good, and Abysm dropped face down on the pavement.
"Yes, Duchess! One vacuum special for the grunt, coming right up!" Gayle chirped out. She pulled the air away from Beatdown, watching him closely to keep from killing the villain.

"Muffle it!" Whipcrack shot back, one again firing a glob of psionic energy into Beatdown's face, this time covering his mouth. It wasn't until after he did this that he realized he'd just made it a lot harder for Gayle to pull the air from Beatdown's lungs.

Once he had a handful, he began transferring them to his other hand and trying to stick them to Beatdown, who was currently bucking like a bull. "Y'know they've already closed the Victory Beach Summer Dance League auditions, right? This little waltz of yours isn't gonna get you anywhere, Beatclown!"

"Gayle Force how about an Interview. It will be a Villain T.V. first an interview without me having someone kidnapped first! What do you think about the outbreaks of violence among my fellow villains?" The camera drone flew to get a frontal shot of Gayle.

Gayle smiled and spouted off a few sound bites. "I hate to say it, but villains are smarter than this. Nobody likes to be manipulated, and whoever's behind this has made some new enemies. But, if you all want to go after Ravenger and be at the top of the food chain, I sure won't mind! Just clean up your own messes, huh?" She winked at the camera and then looked back at Hotwire. "Fair enough, or do you want more?"

The Valkyrie held out her hand, and once more the Olympian Psychopomp paid off a wager. The Olympian commented, "It's not supposed to work like this. Gambling is in my portfolio." The Valkyrie smiled and replied, "It's not a gamble when it's a sure thing. My Lady's followers are known for their mettle." To the policewoman she replied, "They go to War now, Gydhjaling, as a divine test of Justice."

It was the second time around when Kowalski caught the Capital Letters. "Not if they take care to not catch civilians in the crossfire. But usually they don't care, that's why we call them 'evil'. So, are Justice and War still around, or did they scamper off to some other Branch to watch?" Then there was the question of which Justice and which War. Tyr and Odin? Ares and... The name of the Greek god - or was it a goddess? - of Justice escaped her. Goddess, she decided, to judge by Her statues at the courthouses.
The Duchess placed a call to the nearest precinct house to get secure prisoner transportation, telling them who it seemed to be for. How long it would take depended on how many other "deadliest villains" were out there needing to be transported...

Once he had Beatdown thoroughly trussed and suspended, Whipcrack moved away from the tank as Gayle had suggested. As he did so, he stumbled and realized he was feeling a bit muzzy, so he took a few moments to catch his breath. Next, he headed over to Abysm to repeat the process of trussing and suspending.
Once that was finished, he swung over to where the heroes had started to gather for the traditional post-fight conversation. He posted himself on the side of a building, squatting with his feel flat against the wall. "Anyone have any idea what precisely is going on with the city's villains? Your thoughts, Short Circuit?" he asked, looking over at Hotwire.

"Beats me Whippedsmack. Normally when some villains want to cause trouble for another group they call a tip in. She looked around "This, oh this was something else. Three hangouts are now trashed because one minute those who were there were drinking and insulting each other the next they were trying to kill one another."
"Not turf fights, not even a fight over someone stiffing the other. This was all out mass hate."
D-day walked over to Gayle "Miss If I remember right you can do a bit of temporal viewing? Perhaps you can see the cause of this mass breakout. Way I see it the effects are city-wide If the source was some broadcaster perhaps you can see ground zero."

"Yes, looks like they've got them trussed up good. Got a lead: Ares and Themis. Or maybe Mars and Justitia. Yeah, like the God of War. Themis was a Titan, and her closest Roman counterpart is Justitia. And guess where the only courthouses in North America where the statue of Blind Justice is labeled 'Themis'? Vancouver, British Columbia, aaaannnddd..."

Gayle's eyebrows knit for a moment in confusion. "Temporal viewing? Oh, you mean my friend, Sheena! Yes, she could do that! Let me get her on it."
She turned to Whipcrack and smiled broadly. "Hiya, Whipcrack! Yeah, long time no see, too! Are you gonna be okay with that shot you took to the back?"
She looked up to see the Titan City Police special containment units arriving; each of the two Deadly 7 villains would be transported in his or her own vehicle. "Excellent! Just gotta get these guys held and into custody. Meanwhile...." She connected with Sheena on her commlink and relayed the story.

Hotwire glances over to the person walking over using a smartphone. Being who she was she started intercepting the transmissions... "What? God of War and Titans... you mean some nutjob gods are doing this? Oh no, it's in my contracts I don't mess with no Gods!"

Whipcrack dissipated his armor except for the subtle glow of a thin layer of it along his feet. He watched them as theories were thrown about.
His hands formed a T. "Okay whoa, time out. Let me get this straight. You guys think this is being caused by Greek gods?" Whipcrack asked incredulously.
"So, we can't fight them since, well, they're freakin' GODS... how do we find and make contact with one of their priests?" he asked, having stood 'up' and started pacing back and forth along the wall.

Her call connected and Gayle touched two fingers to her winged headband, more to signal to those nearby that she was on the phone, rather than it being necessary. The typical one-sided phone conversation ensued for the people around her at the edge of the park as the singer talked with her best friend. "Hi, Sheena. You got your situation locked down? Great! Yeah, we've figured out who's behind it all."
"Ares and Themis."
"Yeah, you got it; Olympian god and goddess of war and justice."
"No, we don't know why. I was hoping you could find them?"
"They're still here in the city, somewh-... No, I don't suppose that matters if you're gonna do spirit tracking, does it?"
Gayle glanced around and smiled at the heroes and others nearby. "Well, I'm here with a bunch of people. I don't know if you know Whipcrack, but he's here. And D-Day. We've just stopped Abyss and Beatdown from tearing apart Salamandra and minions, and whatever gets this villain war shut down fastest...."
"Thanks! They are nasty, yeah. You what? Seriously? Damn, that was quick!" Gayle looked around again at the heroes. "Hotwire from Villain TV is here, too, and she's gonna want an exclusive story, probably, but yeah."
"Okay, you're the FBSA agent. And goddess. We'll meet you there."
Gayle turned her attention back to the nearby crew. "Top of the Lexar Building, near the National Cemetery. That's where Sheena found them. She doesn't think this is going to be a fight, but she said you guys might want some answers, so if you want to come along, feel free."

Sumerian? deity, with a priestess-in-training of Freya for backup," Officer Kowalski pulled a necklace out from under her uniform, with three interlaced triangles pointing downward hanging about even with her badge, "may be the best we can do on short notice."
The Duchess asked the obvious question, "What about the one who's training you?"
"She's in D.C. attending the ceremony at Arlington with her husband, a retired Marine." Long habit prompted her to avoid mentioning that these were her parents she was speaking of.

Hotwire looked over at Officer Kowalski "Technically you are correct. After all the last person to use the name Hotwire was found in a coma and died soon after. About two months ago give or take. Me I'm just a friendly hologram operated by remote control from an undisclosed location. Who may have been designed to look like the former Jane Watts aka Hotwire for reasons." She whistled a bit then looked to her left.
"A priest huh... Let us see... There a Norse Rune priest who runs a New Age type store. No Olympian type religious leaders listed in the Hero data... what do you mean Code? What I'm not supposed to have access? Come on I'm playing the hero part of course. Um... protection of privacy?" Rolls her eyes "not like they can capture me Only one I calculate who could is the Dutchess...um... Did I said that out loud?"
She smiled and looked at the group. "Nevermind. Pay no attention to the remote controlled avatar."
D-Day looked over to Hotwire "the only reason I'm not arresting you is my sense of honor. You have helped in your own way but if you do commit a crime in my presence..." He left the rest of the statement to speak for itself. Then looked to Gyle Force "I agree. I had a run in with a few so-called gods from time to time. So far I haven't met one who didn't enjoy an chance to brag."

"Thank you, that would be fine," Kowalski replied, pulling herself up his back before wrapping her legs around his waist. She draped her arms over his shoulders and locked her hands together as low as she could reach over his chest, it wouldn't do to put pressure on his throat. "Ready!" she announced.
Seeing that the officer had a ride, the Duchess started up her grav cycle and took off, taking advantage of the winds to stay close behind Gayle Force without needing to really open up the thrusters. "On yer left," she warned, just in case she was too close.

Surprised by Whipcrack's yelling, she would have replied but was cut off by Beatdown's sudden attack. Moving to help him with a panicked shout, she was cut off by a mob of enraged infernians, beating her way through them one by one, and by the time she finished and flew up to scan the beach for any other signs of activity, the bout was over.
Landing near the other heroes, she nodded to D-Day and the Duchess, and blinked at the mention of potential divine involvement. She looked and regarded Whipcrack, speaking softly. "I...had business off of Earth." She doesn't elaborate further and seems to have more she will say later, as she continues.
"If you would like to talk and travel at the same time?" She offers.

"You had... of course. You had business off Earth. That explains everything. I guess that, when you disappeared, I shouldn't have been WORRIED OUT OF MY FUCKING MIND! " With that said, Whipcrack turned his back on Lady Nova.
As soon as Ofc. Kowalski was settled, Whipcrack summoned and shaped his armor to wrap around her like a protective cocoon from shoulder blades to thighs, then continued wrapping that around his own torso, effectively securing her to him. "This is going to be a bumpy ride until we get to taller buildings."
He fired elastic strands to buildings on either side of the road, then began walking backwards while secured to the road, stretching the strands out. "Hope you don't get motion sick." he said before releasing his hold on the road and flinging them skyward. True to his word, until they reached the point where buildings started getting taller at the border of Victory Beach and Old Bradford, Whipcrack's travel had to alternate between swings, slingshots, and parkour.
Once they'd reached an area where he could swing like normal, he looked around to see if Lady Nova had stayed back with him or flown ahead.

Despite her ability to take bullets and strikes from the likes of Agent Tower, she flinhes slightly at that, making sure to fly near Whipcrack and keep pace with him, while scanning for threats below.
"Of course you had a right to be worried! I felt terrible leaving but...well, that hasn't changed. It doesn't explain as much as it should, another time?" She then noticingly changes her tone to be a bit more official, she's getting serious...or well, moreso.
"Excellent strategy with Beatdown, can't fight when you can't move. It seems like all of these gangs, despite whatever is effecting them, aren't changing up their typical attack patterns?"

"Just fine, thanks," she replied. She was glad they were putting off their... discussion until later; as bad as ordinary domestic disputes could get, it would only be worse for two superpowered individuals to be having it out while confronting gods.

"Oh, I'm so going to send some of this footage to Behind the Mask show. Hero lover's quarrel they eat it up!" Hotwire said as soon as Whipcrack and Nova were out of earshot. Then she was racing down the street skating on electric sparks like an Ice speed scatter or more like a mag-lift train.
D-day shook his head "Going to face a fellow who is the living embodiment of War and those two seem to have things they need to work out. Let's hope he doesn't use it against us, bad enough we have Hotwire around." Then he started running then leaped in the air. Each time he landed the next leap sent him higher and farther.

The city passed beneath them. Random scenes of scattered violence--like pages ripped from a dozen different comics--were being cleaned up by Titan City's heroes. Gayle Force flew on to the Lexar Tower, a graceful structure of white marble and glass on the east side of Alexandria. The classic lines of the building suggested an old sort of elegance unmatched by the more modern glass tower construction common to much of the downtown area. There were certainly many taller buildings in the city, but this one commanded an excellent, unobstructed view of much of the metropolis. It wasn't hard to imagine why a couple of Olympian gods might watch their work play out from this site.
Gayle's commlink murmured, "Gayle, this is Sheena. I'm approaching the top of the Lexar building. You coming?"
"Getting close, and climbing. Be there in a jiffy!" the green-clad heroine replied. She added, "With friendly company, too."
Gayle reached the roof of the high-rise to see Sheena waiting, with the iron demon wolf, Sharur, by her side. Her thick, sun-streaked mane of blonde hair—a couple of shades lighter than the great feathered eagle’s wings growing from between her shoulder blades--fluttered gently in the wind. At just over 5’8 Sheena was neither short nor especially tall. Instead of her black FBSA uniform suit, Gayle noted that she was wearing her hero costume--a fantasy ranger outfit in deep blue leather and bronze-accented metal. The former game warden had always had high cheekbones, fair, lightly tanned skin, and eyes the color of blue jay feathers, but now they were just the finishing touches on a goddess’s body. The subtle golden glow she was emanating told Gayle that her friend was in full "goddess mode" and taking this seriously.
"Hiya, Sheena," the singer said.
"Hey, Gayle. They're waiting for us." Sheena nodded toward the two Olympians watching them with differing degrees of patience from a corner of the roof. "Not even in the spirit world, either."
The chiseled warrior, appealingly scarred and armored in ancient style, nodded and snorted. The lean woman in the elegant gown laughed lightly at her companion's irritation and stepped forward. "Greetings, Shanikali! It has been a long time, hasn't it? I trust you are well?"
Sheena bowed slightly. "Themis. A pleasure, as always, but the circumstances are a little puzzling, this time. What's going on here?"
"Don't you want to wait for the rest of the mortal heroes to arrive? I'm sure they will find this little test Ares and I have cooked up quite fascinating."
"I'm sure," Sheena muttered. She settled her wing feathers and crossed her arms. "All right. When you're ready."

The Duchess parked her grav cycle and dismounted. She touched the brim of her Stetson toward Sheena and Themis, then gave a curt nod to Ares. She's clearly one of those uppity modern mortals that might give respect to a God, but only if she thinks him worthy of respect.
