You powers come from a found object you wear. What is it?

Rules are simple. an object gives you super power (like Green Lantern), and you must wear it to use your powers.
The kicker: IT CAN'T BE A RING.

OK, so whats your object and what powers does it give you?

I will start. (stealing from mythology).
The Spartan
Jason found a Lion skin cape in a Greek ruin. When he wears it he becomes super strong and nigh invulnerable. He can run as fast as a speeding car and jump 50 feet straight up.
The cape gives no indication that it is special (although it detects as Magic). Further, when he puts it on, the cape cannot be removed unless Jason takes it off willingly or he dies.
But once off, anyone who knows about the cape can claim it for their own.

to protect himself, Jason wears an armored belt with glowy things and buttons he will push (making more glowies). The belt does nothing, but its a ruse to keep attention away from his cape.

Mythology is a great place to steal from.

Hermes' Sandals, wearing these grants flight and super speed.

Thor's Power-Belt, Grants super human strength and durability.

Honestly... I could just go through the D&D magic items list and make heroes for most/all of them.

I don't think that grants any powers...

Unless wearing the top allows him to spawn an assault rifle... Or multiple rifles... Now I'm just imagining someone holding out there hands and spraying guns everywhere.

Khepri, the Rising Sun

Khepri, the Rising Sun

Erica Johnson had thought the scarab necklace passed down through her family was nothing more than a family heirloom. It would have remained so had she not been near the Egyptian wing of the Museum that day. She was a security guard, and this night would prove most eventful. A tall, lanky man was chanting inside one of the exhibits, dressed in a long robe, with his face obscured. The exhibit was for the gods and the man was caught next to a small sculpture of Apep also known as Apophis, the Eater of Souls. As she approached the man, her brooch lit up and opened, the wings of the scarab released. A golden beam shot out and blasted the unknown man. The man crumpled on to the ground. She zip-tied his hands and pulled back his hood. The skull gazed back at her, blue light flickering in its empty sockets. "..Khepri...the Rising Sun.. no.." The skeleton turned to dust in the police's custody. The next night, the Idol of Apophis went missing. Footage showed a tal figure, in robes and hood strode past those on duty and walked out with the sculpture.

Since that day, Erica has discovered that she can call upon the powers of Khepri, the scarab god of dawn. It bathes her in a golden light, giving her armor, the power of flight and the ability to fire golden light from her palms. It gran ts her some extra strength, and durability, although not on par with some others.

In a bit of a silly mood here

In a bit of a silly mood here...

An oversized, clunky top hat that has an inexaustable supply of clawing, biting, angry cats to throw at mobs. They return to the hat when the felines' natural taste for human blood has been satiated...

A haunted dog collar that provides massively increased olfactory perception. May be intolerable to wear near fire hydrants or tree lines streets. Wearing must fight urges to chase cars...

A B-Movie monster/robot costume that actually turns you into the monster. A product of a failed filmmaker who enrolled in an online vocational technomancy training after funding fell through for his last movie. He now uses the suits he makes to rob and / or extort money for his next movie. He also makes documentary movies about this entire process. Critics have given his films an entirely new genre - Faux Mockumentary. Many of these same critics now find themselves the unfortunate subject of his latest beheading series...

A black beret that alters your genetic code to turn you into a mime with illusion based control powers. However, the wearer cannot speak, cannot wear deodorant and frightens small children.

A chest hair toupee that gives the wearer super manly strength and the ability to disco-box.

A highly sought after pair of 19th century spectacles that allows the wearer to see backwards in time. Causes headaches the further back they go. Typical users can tolerate up to two weeks in reverse.

The Hell Toupee

The Hell Toupee

A failed attempt to overthrow Lucifer got this demon transformed into an indestructible hairpiece as a form of eternal torment. An unforseen side effect allows the demon to possess all those who wear this toupee. The demon continues to plot to take over hell from the heads of balding men.

The Aegis

The Aegis

A shield from Greek mythology, first owned by Zeus and passed down to his daughter Athena, who later gave it to Perseus to carry in his fight against Medusa.

It is a round, gold shield, polished enough to a mirror shine. Braided bronze serpents twist around the rim.

The shield is indestructible and can deflect energy-based attacks which are reflected from its surface, sometimes back at the attacker. The wielder can also magically see out from the mirror as if looking through a camera, though they are protected if exposed to bright lights or other harmful visual attacks. The final property of the shield is that it can demoralize an evil enemy by reflecting the guilt of their crimes back at them if they look into it.

Currently wielded by a hero calling himself The Hoplite.

Norm had been sitting in the same seat at Alice's Diner for nigh on forty years. He would rant his discontent with the world to anyone who would listen, or the air if there was no other audience. One day, when the diner was robbed at gunpoint while he was there, he declared he had enough and threw the nearest thing at hand at the gunman. It was a salt shaker. Where the power came from is beyond explanation, but the gunman was thrown across the diner and out the door where he sat, sobbing into his own hands with contrition.

Norm has been on a one-man crusade to teach the world proper respect with his trusty salt shaker ever since. The Cape Chasers have dubbed him "Salty Old Bastard"

Really? from the jacket? I would have though it came from those gloves he was wearing.

Empyrean got his solar powers from a Portal Corp/Crey science accident, but when the Incarnate stuff came out I explained it as his having found the Girdle of Helios in the caves under Cimerora, which granted him additional Sun-based mystical powers. Love weaving my charachters into game lore :).

Ragamuffin

I created this character because of this thread, but I will be reposting her over in Backstory

Ragamuffin

Name: Sherry Conners
Primary: Force Control
Secondary: Preservation
Tertiary: Massive Melee (If allowed)
Movement: Flight/Teleport
Source: Magical Suit of Rags/Self

History:
Sherry Conners moved furtively through the alleyway behind the old occult store looking for things she might be able to use. The attractive young woman had been homeless for three years now, since she had escaped from her father's domination and nightly assaults, her mother encouraging him with a gleam in her eye. Now she lived on the streets making the best life for herself she could under the circumstances. That was the reason she was here tonight, the couple that operated the occult shop made custom clothing for the mystically inclined, and they would often just throw their scraps out in the bins behind the store after they had completed a commission. Hopefully there would be something there tonight so that she could add it to her homemade bed of scraps.

She was in luck, there was a small pile of scraps there, more than enough to complete her little project so she grabbed everything there and took it with her.

As she moved through the sewer to her little alcove where she had lived for the last couple of years, Sherry wondered if there were more she could do with her life. She was surviving, but she didn't have much of a life, and her living accommodations kept her from having any kind of real relationship. The men who lived the same lifestyle tended to want more from her than she was willing to give, and the same went for some of the women. As she opened the makeshift door to her little sewer hovel, she sighed. Her life was hard, but it was better than what she had run from. Truth be known, she sometimes felt like she was still running.

She looked over at her makeshift bed. It wasn't the normal mattress style bed with sheets and blankets you might find in a normal home. Instead it was literally a pile of scrap cloth that she would burrow down inside of to stay comfy during the night. It had also helped to obscure her the one time someone had found her hovel and invited themselves inside. The rough looking man, also obviously homeless, had taken several items, but had only glanced at the pile of rags before leaving. She had come to love the sad looking pile for just that reason. In addition to building up the pile, she had also found ways to improve her door so that it was stronger. When she finished, she crawled into bed for the night.

What Sherry hadn't realized was that by taking her rags exclusively from occult shops (they had the coolest fabrics) they might be more than they appeared. Each piece of fabric was from a garment that had been mystically enchanted in some way: increased strength and/or durability, levitation and flight, improving senses (including psychic and magical), shadowy movement, and various other enchantments. In the time that she had been collecting these discarded fragments, they had eventually reached a certain level of critical mass magically and become spontaneously semi-intelligent with low levels of empathy. The pile had also come to love Sherry who tried to keep it clean and loved the feel of it on her skin. The night of the intrusion, it had actively used the magical properties of some of the scraps to protect her from notice, and with the increase in her fondness for the pile so to had its affection for her grown.

Now, with this latest addition of scraps, it had enough power to cover her and to reshape itself to be more than just her bed. It could be with her at all times, and become what she needed when she needed. It felt happy that it would be able to improve the life of its creator as it slowly wrapped itself around her limbs. As it did so, she snuggled down more deeply into the fabric, a small smile on her face.

Unknown to either, outside her hovel, the man that had previously raided it had returned. Earlier in the evening he had seen her leaving and waited deep in the shadows. He watched her return, and enter, after a time he saw the lights go out. He thought he might let her get a little sleep so that he could scare her awake, like he had done so many other women he had raped over the years. Now, deep in the night, he moved towards the door. When he tried to force it as he had before he found that it was reinforced and he had to work harder to enter.

Inside, the slam of the man's body against the door had startled Sherry awake. At first she felt panic, but something seemed to tell her that she would be ok. It was then that she realized that the rags had wrapped themselves around her body and limbs, almost like they were set to protect her. She felt more...what...powerful? She wasn't sure what power felt like, but she imagined it may have felt something like this. Then the intruder was in.

He was upset that he had lost the element of surprise and felt the need to vent his rage on the young woman he had seen earlier. Her death would give him his release. However, he was shocked to see the rag clad figure standing in the middle of the hovel, a hooded cloak swirling about her. She turned her eyes towards him, and the cloak shot towards him and grabbed one of his arms, following that with throwing him into a wall. Now he was frightened. This wasn't supposed to be happening. This...Thing was throwing him around like he was a toy.

When the rag-cloak had touched the intruder, Sherry got a glimpse of the evils he had perpetrated in the past and understood what had been in store for her. She was angry and afraid, but as she watched the rags throw the man around she realized that she couldn't let them kill the man. Instead, she had the rags tie the man up in discarded non-magical cloth after he was unconscious. Using the stealth abilities of the rag-suit, and its flight abilities, she arrived at the local precinct, where she left the evil man, still trussed up with a small note. From there she headed out to think.

She now had a sentient suit of rags that loved her, and she felt love towards, much like a mother child relationship. The problem was, she knew that she didn't know enough about the suit to be safe, but she did understand that it was magic that gave it life. With that knowledge she realized that the only ones that could help her were the elderly couple that ran the occult shop. They lived in an apartment above the shop, so that is where she headed.

When she arrived she floated outside what she believed to be their bedroom window and had the cloak rap on it. When they answered the window they did so while warning her that they had the magic to defend themselves. She told them what her situation was and they invited her inside to further discuss her problems. They observed the suit changing into normal everyday wear as she entered and was lead to the dining room. As they learned more of her circumstances, they were horrified by the life the young woman had lived, and even more so when they realized that she had somehow created a sentient magical entity from the scraps they had carelessly discarded. During the discussion they saw the suit reach out towards a scrap that had fallen to the floor when they had taken out the last scraps for garbage, and witnessed it absorbing the remnant into itself.

The excused themselves for a few minutes to discuss the problem and what should be done. They both felt the need to help the young woman, Sherry as she called herself. She reminded them of their deceased daughter, the victim of a vehicle accident a few years before. Her room had been untouched since her death as they could not bear to throw out her stuff and lose the associated memories. Sherry was stunned when they invited her to live with them in their daughter's old room, while they taught her, though she would also be asked to work in the shop as well. She broke down crying, and cried harder when she saw the beautiful room she was being offered, so much better than what she had with her parents as well as her hovel in the sewers.

She does work with the couple, learning to use her newly developing magical abilities, and working in the shop making new friends and acquaintances in the mystic community. However, sometimes, she feels the need to go out and protect others who do not have the power to defend themselves, using the suit to bring justice when they find evil.

Thus was born Ragamuffin

Powers:
-Flight and Teleportation
-Limited Retrocognition (fabric only)
-Ability to sense nearby fabric and its status
-Immobilization of enemies due to rag entanglement
-Limited Telekinesis (Fabrics only)
-Low level strength enhancement
-Protection for self and others by reinforcement of the Fabrics they are wearing
-Low level regeneration due to fabrics aiding in mending (can be extended to others)

There may be other abilities enchanted into the fabrics that make up her costume, but she hasn't discovered them yet.

Her powers are entirely centered on the suit, and without it, she can do nothing. Others can take the suit, as experiments with the Morgans have shown, and use it, just not as well as she can.

Appearance:
Sherry, herself, is a 5’6” (167.64cm) tall Sandy Blonde haired woman with brown eyes and fair skin. When not in heroic form she typically appears to be wearing loose fitting clothing that often has multiple colorful fabrics with no visible seams, but she can cause the appearance to shift with a thought to allow her to blend into any group.

In her heroic guise the colorful, multi-textured rags seem to flow over her at random, clinging to her with no sign of stitchwork holding them together. They are tight against her body for the most part, but she does have a deeply hooded cloak that seems to move of its own accord. She does wear a mask, but it only covers the upper portion of her face, except her eyes, and lets her hair flow as freely as possible in the hood.

Personality:
She is unassuming and quite friendly, and extremely grateful to the Morgan’s for giving her a second chance in life, making her very protective of them. She absolutely hates rapists which is, given her background, no surprise.

She has heard of Patchwork and is horrified that someone might be using magical fabric in such a fashion.

Status:
Currently active hero, specializing in helping the homeless and others in less affluent neighborhoods.

She currently resides above, and works at, the New Dawn Occultist Shoppe which is owned by her new mentors John D and Aradia Morgan. They have taken to teaching her about magic and have come to believe that she has her own very low-level innate magical abilities, and that it was those, in conjunction with the magic left in the rags, that allowed for the unique manifestation she has.

Inspirations:
Spawn, Ragman, Dr. Strange (MCU Version), The Cape (TV Series)

Would "music" fit the category? It isn't something you'd wear or hold directly, but I like the idea of a character whose power requires or is amplified by music. Perhaps even shaped by it, so certain genres or songs define what kind of powers they can wield. Perhaps they can sing or play music themselves, perhaps not, but to shine they need another source of music so they can focus on translating it into power. Perhaps it isn't the sound itself that gives them strength, but the emotional stirring and inspiration people feel when they hear it.

It is sort of related since it is a source of power external to the character itself.

So how about using an item in a transient way. Say the music gives him the powers but without his music he can’t really be very effective so his personal music player maybe a gizmo that has been attuned somehow to his particular abilities making him far better with his abilities than relying on whatever ambient music is nearby... he just had crazy stuff happening until the day he discovered an ability tied to a particular song/rhythm/etc. So now he keeps his Zune/iPod whatever on hand at all times to channel whatever ability he needs through the song on his player. Not just any song but his particular playlist! This could actually work pretty good with the props system they have discussed. How about that idea? Makes the name Zune much more meaningful than it ever was as a device...

That would also work for a guitar, flute, drum, etc. The power doesn't directly come from the item, but from what you can do with it. Kind of like having a battery around to power your flashlight. The battery itself doesn't make light, but it makes it possible.

Close but no cigar.
-- The entire power has to come from the object. and it must be an object that can be taken away if anyone is aware of it.
you could have a magic iPod, but not an inherent ability. anyone who finds out about the ipod could conceivably take it away. In my first example the lion skin cape can be stolen or taken after the user is killed. then the bad guy could use the cape in his own crime spree. an object can pass through multiple hands this way give any number of people the same power.
