WISH LIST 7: Personal Mythology System

Part 1

Oh no! Jimmy Olsen's in trouble!
My friend Harry Osborn is the Green Goblin?!
Hey that nice veteran I met in the park is now my side kick.
Lex Luthor is attacking while I take Lois on a date!
Gee, I wonder if it's wise to start a romantic relationship with Selena Kyle...
Should I tell Aunt May who I really am?

Imagine if the day job system was expanded to allow you to have personal relationships with characters, and then you were rewarded with superhero missions. I purpose that each of these characters would have 10-20 random flags attached to them that would determine a number of things, such as:

1. If they are romanceable
2. They're favorite meet up places (you would meet them here)
3. If they are a secret villain
4. If they are a secret hero
5. If they are an alien
6. If they are possessed
7. If they are a time traveler
8. If they want to be your friend, they might also be your boss, a neighbor or a relative
9. They're favorite hobby (minigame)
10. If they would like to be a sidekick
11. If they are debt with the mob
12. How they would react if they knew your secret identity
13. Secret past with a shadowy organization
14. Kind of an asshole
15. Gives lots of gifts
16. Curiously prone to super villain attacks

The game would then generate on going content based on these flags, how you react to these flags, and the other flags of the other characters in your mythology.

The game may also combine interesting out comes. If your past three girlfriends were all villains, they may team up against you. If your sidekick dies one too many times he may become a villain *cough* Jason Todd/ Bucky Barnes *cough*. Characters may also get temporary flags, or get new flags as you remove the old ones. For example you may meet a character while you are both students at university, and while at school he gives you school related missions. Once he graduates he gets a job at the power plant, and now gives you power plant missions unless you convince him to go for a master's degree.

What would you like to see in your mythology?

That all sounds fun as far as

That all sounds fun as far as it's doable. Anything that increases flavor and immersion with the right comic book feel is great.

I thought they were heading in a good direction in Pretoria. Remember when you flirted with Praetor White's girlfriend? Or the whole thing with the Noble Savage? It was fun and not too heavy-handed.

I wouldn't want ingame drama to get too heavy-handed or teen-dramaish--don't want to feel like I'm playing "Twilight: The Game".

Man, that just made me remember how awesome the Ghouls were in Praetoria. :( What a waste.

FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)

This brings up a question:

This brings up a question: like with the recent KS update explaining the legality of heroes, how are we treating aliens?

Will it be known they're in our universe with CIA/MiB covering their existence up? Or will it be well known aliens exist with several example species? ( not my favourite route, gets complicated fast)

Also, and maybe this should be a different thread, but how will we treat Classical Mythologies? Marvel is weird and had both Norse and Greek gods coexisting, for example.

Or would CoT dodge the point completely and leave it to each player?

Part 0: Original Mythology

Part 0: Original Mythology

The first part of the Personal Mythology System would be for the character to set up their origin. They would select things like species, childhood friends, relatives, where you work, etc. If you were to select that you were a robot, the game would ask you about your creator instead of parents, and ask about his or her other inventions rather than siblings. Ideally with such a system you could tell the game that you come from the planet Rixat, are part of the royal family, and fled because the risk of assassination was too great. Shortly after you finish the tutorial and one or two missions, you would get a message or a text that tells you that someone from your past wants to meet up.

Part 2: Second Generation

So, you met this girl at Titan University, and the two of you started to fall in love. The only problem was that she was part of a cult and become possessed by the Living Darkness of the Infinite Abyss- you know the usual stuff that happens to 20 somethings in love. After you banish Living Whatchamacall it, she becomes an exemplary spell casting side kick and the two of you dispense justice like pez all over Titan City. But you, as the player, start to wonder, "What would it be like to play as her?" You're in luck! The Personal Mythology system lets you activate sidekicks and archenemies to become fully playable characters. Instead of re-asking the Part 0 questions the original character had to answer, the game will remember that the new character has a past with the Living Darkness, the cult, that her love interest is the first character, and that she attended Titan University. Since her mythology is connected to the main character, the game will still generate content for her using those previous experiences. She may have to save her former mentor from his greatest archenemy, only for the cult from her past to once again rear it's head. Over time, she will develop her own mythology, enemies, allies, friends, history, and story, and this new mythology will travel back into the original character's mythology.

Part 3: Social Mythology

When you friend (called allying) someone under this system, you have the option of sharing mythologies. If you choose to do this it will not only allow you to receive dynamic content from another player, but it will also generate content for you and your ally to play together. For example, if Superman and Batman team up, they might fight Lex Luthor and the Joker. Eventually your alliance will generate it's own mythology separate from what the two of you had individually.

Even guilds (or teams/leagues w/e) will have their own mythology. Your team may get an anti version of itself assembled from the archenemies of each of you similar to the Dark Avengers story line or the Legion of Doom. The guild will also have it's own NPC to interact with. A guild hall may have a butler or a secretary. You may find that the butler has strange habit of staring out of a telescope at night, or that the secretary never sleeps. If you see something like that, it may be a good idea to follow up on it.

Here is an example of how the

Here is an example of how the origin system would work when you create your character:
1. How did you get your powers? Mutation, Magic, Science, Tech, Martial Arts, I am a Robot, I am an Alien, Cosmic, I don't know
You select Magic
2. Go on... I was taught sorcery by a wizard, I was possessed by a demon, I don't know, I drank a magic potion, This magic is my birthright, I am a magical creature
You select I was possessed by a demon
3. Are you still possessed by the demon? Yes, No, I don't know
You select Yes
3. What about your parents? They're dead, I don't know, They are the ones who got me possessed, They tried to help me, but couldn't
You select they're dead

You will start the game with a demon as your main adversary, and the death of your parents as a major plot point. The demon will be randomly generated using the character creator (you will be able to play him later) using body types that are flagged as demonic. Since this is a superhero story, the death of your parents can't be a coincidence. Your parents were killed by the demon. The game will go on to generate missions where you have to solve magical puzzles (drawn from a list) to purge yourself from the demon and then fight it. The demon will then reveal that it killed your parents so you would hate it and gave you magic so you would try to push it into the world- which it could not do on it's own. From there, it would continue to attack you, and you would look for clues as to it's location so you can slay it once and for all.

After you play the origin story arc for the demon you would be able to play as him by having him fill one of your empty character slots. When you activate him you would be asked a series of questions:
1. How did you get your powers? Magic
2. Go on... I am a magical creature
3. What type of magical creature? Demon
These choices would be fixed for you by the game as this is an already established aspect of the character
4. Why did you come to Titan City? To rule it, To escape hell, To avenge my master, I don't know
You select to escape hell

This creates an origin quest where cultists, demons, and angels try to bring you back to hell.

Here's another example
1. How did you get your powers?
You select I am an Alien
2. Go on... My world was destroyed, my family was exiled, we are explorers, I was sent here to protect this world
You select my family was exiled
3. Who was exiled with you? Check all that apply. My father, my mother, my brother, my sister, no one
You select brother and sister
4. Why were you exiled? Opposed the rulers, Heir to the throne, Stole an artifact, Disagreed with doctrine
You select disagreed with doctrine

From here the game generates enemies that are inquisition bounty hunters with alien weapons who have come to punish you. The game randomly generates features for your father and sister. Your father works at the University as a scientist, is not able to become a side kick, really likes the beach. Your sister is a student at the University, can become your sidekick, is not romanceable (this isn't game of thrones) and works at the library. You will see the two of them in your base, and you get a family rocket ship base item that can't be found in game.

Does that make sense?

I would like to point out,

I would like to point out, that if new heroes were asked four questions with five answers each, there would be 1024 unique answers to those questions. If you take into account that each character created by these quests may have up to 20 flags that make that character distinct, and that the missions themselves could draw from a list of maybe 20 preset layouts- it is safe to say that each character played begins the game as completely unique. Let me say that again. Each character begins as completely unique. No other game has ever even attempted that.

If this idea gets a bit more attention, I'd be willing to make a completely fleshed out origin tree that would show people in detail how it works.

I really like this idea. I'm

I really like this idea. I'm a Role-Player so anything that helps me flesh out the character and the background for RP is welcomed by me. I love creating backgrounds for my characters and stories around them. It would also be interesting to see how MWM would utilise such backgrounds and whether they could create a 'personal story arc' from it (this is something that would take a LOT of work so I don't know what would be feasible. If nothing else it can be used for inter-character RP (so you could have public and private information and if someone comes up with a way to access the private info and you decide, as the player of that character, that what they have done is good enough that you think 'yes, that would work. Well done!', you could unlock that tidbit of information for that character.

We all have it in us to be a hero to someone,
Super powers are optional.....

Part of the Phoenix Rising Initiative.....

Proud to be a hero. Prouder still to be a member of Watchfire

Alright, I'll do part of the

Alright, I'll do part of the tree. Let's say Martial Arts

1. How did you get your powers? Martial Arts

2. How did you learn Martian Arts? A)Taught by monks from a young age. B)Taught by a grandmaster in Titan City C) In the military D) I sought out experts after a tragedy E) I don't remember

3A. Why did they teach you? To defend the weak. To become an assassin. To gain understanding. For a specific mission you were never told about. I don't remember.

4A. Why did you leave? I brought shame to the monastery. I was forced out by a rival. They were all destroyed. It was time for me to fulfill my destiny. I don't remember.

3B. Who was the grandmaster? My father. A woman in my dreams. A dragon in the forest. A spirit in the cemetery. I don't remember.

4B. What other students did the grandmaster have? My brother who is also my best friend. A sadistic girl. A very quiet, mysterious man. A carefree joking girl. I don't remember.

3C. Why did you join the military? Had to get away from home. Wanted to become stronger. A patriot. Wanted to kick ass. I don't remember.

4C. Who was most memorable from the military? My drill instructor. A man I was sent to find. A woman in my squad. My commanding officer. I don't remember.

3D. What was the tragedy? The death of a family member. Seeing a super-villain rampage downtown. A near death experience. Seeing a martial arts superhero in action. I don't remember.

4D. Who did you seek out? World champions. Eastern mystics. Underground fighting rings. I ended up in prison and learned the hard way. I don't remember.

I don't remember options would randomly select, and would add amnesia story arcs.

As you can see here there are one or two obvious plot arcs that the opening generates. The characters that are created would also have additional flags placed on them to make them reoccurring characters. For example, your commanding officer may contact you to complete work that the two of you left unfinished. When the game generated the commanding officer he was given the flag that he is indebted to mob. From here he tries to rob a jewelry store to pay off his debt, and you come and stop him. Based on how you handle the issue he may become a hero or slip into villainy.

This is a very rough conceptual model of what I would imagine this could be. As for feasibility, this could be feasible if the devs prioritized it over other content.
