Since we just hit the wings mark in Kickstarter, my question is, with particular forcus on bird wings, are the devs looking at adding different types of bird wings i.e. eagle, hawk, owl, sparrow, gull, ect...? I know this wont happen at launch, but are the devs looking to expand the specifics of wing types?
Thanks
It would be very cool to have at least 3 variations of bird wings. My choices would be eagle, hawk, and owl. Vulture would also be interesting. Sparrow? Gull? I could see those being used, but it's the hunters that have the wings I've always been most impressed with.

I was worried about a lack of official mention of this milestone in the roughly ten hours since we hit the goal, but then I remembered that this isn't anybody's day job ^_^
I also prefer hunters' wings, but gull wings have a different look to raptor wings. I think of this as a plus for them over another type of raptor.

What about like plane wings or mecha wings? I'd like those options too, as much as animal wings are great, would be awesome to have man made style of wings as well. Obviously animated would be ideal, although that would take some effort I would assume.
One issue I had with wings in COX was the fact that if you had wings and were on the ground in a indoor mission the wings would block a good chunk of your view which could cause problems if you was in a narrow corridor or doorway. So like for example with the man-made wings, having them retract when your on the ground as an option would be cool, like you press a button and they retract. Just a thought
I defintely have nothing against ultimately having as many wing types as possible, including multiple bird types.
But I figure to start things off it'd make the most sense to follow the same path CoH did and get at the very least "angel" wings and "devil" wings. The good thing about the angel wings is that they could be generic enough that they could pass for the first type of "bird" wings and serve as such at least until additional bird-like wings could be made.

Towards the end of CoH they finally gave us a couple pairs of "retractable tech" wings that would automatically fold down once you landed. They looked pretty cool and mostly got out of the way in terms of being able to see around them. I'm hoping this new game will at least copy those wings and maybe give us other versions as well.

I'm also in the camp of those desiring wings that retract or fold.

I know this isn't quite the same as animated wings...... but I really really hope they include options for "under arm" wings, capes, webbing, etc. It's one of my favorite comic aesthetics!
In the realm of wings, I've always wanted some rarer bird wings... like the Nightjar's pennant wings.. or more "speed" wings like Swallow or Tern wings...
if nothing else, we should have four wing types available, for "avian" wings, imo:
Passive soaring (Eagle):
active soaring (herons, gulls):
Elliptical (ravens,sparrows):
and
"High Speed" (Falcons, terns, swifts)
as for non-avian wings.... something insect-like (dragonfly, moth, butterfly) that actuated correctly would be AWESOME, "Dragon" wings, mechanical/metal wings, and some sort of "ethereal" wings (look like smoke or something... and in any case intangible) would be a nice round collection, imo.

For myself, I am looking at more fantastical wings. Just look to my avatar to get an idea of what I mean.

I'm all for LOTS of wings. For launch I'm hoping they have 1 each of bird, elemental (likely fire), mechanical and energy. The underarm wings would be cool too and easier since they don't have tricky animations to go with them.
I remember when Star Wars was cool...a long, long time ago...
Yeah they might not need to be animated but they may need their own unique "anchor points" sort of like specialized capes.
That brings up a wider issue that was always at the heart of why we couldn't get a lot of things in CoH - anchor points. I hope this new game has in some way solved the problem of having no way to "attach" extra things to our character bodies. It was that limitation that kept us from having things like loincloths or flowing dresses/robes in that game.

Another thing that I thought would go the extra mile, of course later on, would be to scale the wings properly. What I mean is, if a character is small, their wings would be smaller with a shorter wingspan, i.e. sparrow=short wingspan relative to body size, eagle=very large wingspan relative to body size. It would be more than adding wings that were two arms length width, then scale accordingly to your characters height, but say, <5' one and a half arm span, 5'1" - 6'6" two arm span, 6'7" - 8' two and a half arm span.
or, more to the point..... rather than making the wings static in their own right... allow US to scale them... so if I want my wings to be cherubic, i can... if you want yours to be realistic to your body size, you can.... if someone else just wants the look, and not necessarily care about accuracy, they can scale accordingly as well.

Yeah being able to resize a pair of wings (with some kind of slider) would be useful.
The only hiccup to that might be how they're animated. For instance I recall that the little "batwings" actually twitched a bit on their own even when standing on the ground whereas most of the bigger wings were pretty much static when on the ground. Maybe they could make wings move differently based on their size or (maybe better yet) somehow give us control over how we want them to move indepentently of how we want them to look. Admitted that might end up being pretty complicated from a software point of view.

Instead of Choose Your Own Adventure, the Costume Editor would allow you to Choose Your Animation Style from a list.

the game is already set up to have some level of "choose your own animation"..... this might not be as pie-in-the-sky as it would seem at first blush.

How can this thread have gone on for so long with no one requesting Buffalo Wings?

yes, I love "tendril" wings (ala Angels in the Diablo series) also... but they seem so complicated to animate in a game like this, I was afraid to even mention them...

Whatever else you might say about Diablo III's lackluster gameplay (since it gets OLD, fast at high levels) ... it is really hard to find any faults with Blizzard's Art Team when it comes to full motion video in 3D!

CoH's Celestial Wings came close. Sure as heck want them back.
The plastic tips on the ends of shoelaces are called Aglets; their true purpose is sinister.
most likely the most sane launch guess.
granted if they do the bone rigging right they might be able to copy on a lot of sets to a few basic rig shapes.

Based on how popular they were I'm still semi-assuming that among the very first types of wings will be the classic "Angel" and "Devil" wings:

Afterall they were literally the first two wing types available in CoH and as I mentioned before the Angel wings could double as the first generic "bird" wings if necessary. I have nothing against Comicsluvr's other suggestions, but I'm obviously biased for a return of the Devil wings. ;)

I had a toon that was so difficult to see past his wings when I was zoomed in, I'd have to zoom in past my toon altogether and basically be in first person shooter mode. This usually happened with indoor missions where I didn't want to be zoomed too far back. I'd like wings to become translucent or invisible (to the player only) when you pull in with the camera.
Allow me to also put in a Special Mention for the Tech Wings of City of Heroes.

The only real "flaw" of these wings was the fact that the "elbow joints" of the wings clipped through each other when the wings flapped, which I always considered to be something of an animation error, although I suspect is was just a byproduct of how Wings in general were rigged.

I want elemental and weather wings. Each with a diff type. Would be neat to have a pair of wings that when you fly it looks like its creating thunder on the underside. Or Ice wings that let out a cold fog. Or even ice wings that look like they are melting.
