Windows 10?

Does anyone ion here, dev or otherwise, have an opinion about whether or not I should click the little "Get Windows 10" icon in my tray? Will CoT run okay in Win 10? Are there other problems? Do I have to reinstall anything? PLEASE don't tell me I'm going to have to mess with videocard drivers....

What's your current operating system. I've seen a report from another forum that Windows 10 did not natively support his Ethernet adapter and he did have to find a work around (granted, this is on older/socket 1156 hardware). I would expect drivers would need to be reinstalled.

I'm running Windows 7

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and I have an AMD Radeon 6900 series graphics card running catalyst 13.1.

I'm pretty sure if I have to reinstall Catalyst or anything like that I'm taking it to a computer repair place and making some one that knows what hey're doing do it for me. Every time I try to mess with Catalyst I end up with a black screen.

You can claim a Windows 10

You can claim a Windows 10 license without actually installing it. I'd suggest doing that and then waiting until someone else has done the update and read if there's anything bad happening.

From what I've heard about the Windows 10 preview builds, though, this should be a pretty painless update. To the point where it doesn't even change the position of your desktop icons. But let someone else take the hit first. No need to rush, but claim your license anyway. I mean, it's free.

How does one "claim the license" exactly? I mean, I have a thing on the bottom toolbar on the right that says "Get Windows 10", which I don't really know what it does. I assumed it downloads and installs Windows 10, but I know nothing.

Well the good thing about the

Well the good thing about the pro edition conversion to win10 is that you will be allowed options home edition users won't without messing with config files and root directories. Stuff like automatic updates being forced always on for home edition is optional for pro, among other options.

You shouldn't have to upgrade drivers during the technical preview phase of the upgrade, according to this FAQ.

Should you ever need to reinstall the process isn't too complicated. Down load the new driver suite but don't install. Uninstall the deiver from programs. Restart in safe mode. Use a driver clear software like driver cleaner pro to remove anything related to your specific driver (for amd this includes the catalyst software if it is installed). Restart, open executable file for the new driver suite you down loaded, follow the prompts. And if you're a bit of a organize freak like me, defrag the drive after.

Just be aware that with win 10, you give microsoft permission to track all apps, how theybare used, including key logging jnfo connected to the use of said apps in order for them to "improve user experience". Some have gone the route of tinfoil hat that this is taking tracking too far and this feature can't be turned off. Some have proposed that this could lead to vulnerabilities down the road, but not much has been stated as a definite. Just be aware that this is part of the preview and may possibly continue. If you're not comfortable with this part of their eula don't upgrade right away. There is an option to reserve your upgrade so thst you don't miss out on the free offer but want to wait.

Also be aware that other drivers and programs you use may not be compatible and certain programs are not part of the base install such as windows games (for those that can't do without solitaire or mines) as well as a media player. Windows media center has been removed and dvd player is not in the current build but is said to be made available later this year.

You doubleclick the icon, a message box pops up, and there's a big button in that to claim a license. hit that and it'll download, but NOT install, Windows 10 on July 29th. You have to pull the trigger on that manually. And you can delays that as long as you want. There's a deadline for claiming the free license, which is July 29th 2016, but not on installing Windows 10.

Since you have Windows 7 Pro, the Windows 10 it'll install will be Windows 10 Pro. If it's 64-bit, then Windows 10 will as well.

<JimCarrey>Reee heee HEEEEELY?</JimCarrey>

That's good to know; thanks for bringing it to light. I'll be keeping an eye out for such a clause in the EULA. It's certainly not something I'd consent to, and if it's not optional, my switch to Ubuntu will be swift.

Information is the currency of the digital age, and every major technology corporation seems determined to extract as much of it as possible from every individual with very little in the way of privacy or consent. Consider me part of said tinfoil hat crowd. I'm one of those weirdos who actually read terms of service, privacy policies, and EULA's. The EFF is my guiding light.

Still, Windows 10 looks like a nice upgrade. I'm hoping for the best because I'd love to take it for a spin.

Thanks for the info folks. I was curious about exactly how that icon would handle "getting" Win10 but had been too lazy to look it up online. You've saved me some time that I can spend gaming instead!

Also thanks for the info about the Big Brother aspect, Tannim.

I've been running Win 10

I've been running Win 10 preview for months now. It has been stable and I've no issues running any program that I own that Win 7 would run. I had one problem with an update that made my sound card quit working, so I just rolled back to a previous build but Microsoft fixed the issue and a later build fixed my problem. I don't know how well AMD drivers are supported by Microsoft but Nvidia drivers are updated for me directly through windows update....don't know when they started that but makes it easier on me. I haven't done a clean install, I just upgraded from Win 7 Ultimate 64. I really like it myself. I am a bit more adventuresome than most, as I have a raid 5 array that I store drive images on. So if I don't like something it is very easy to click a couple buttons and have Paragon Backup and Recovery restore my rig to any saved drive image from any previous build. Great little program and they offer a free version for home use if anyone is interested.

I reserve the right to have an opinion. You reserve the right to not agree.

To be fair, the tracking is also available in Windows 8, and it was OPT IN option. If this continues the same way as Windows 8 did, then expect the same thing when it goes live. Just that in Windows 10, if you disable the tracking/apps usage, then expect something like Cortana to not work in the slightest.

And to be totally honest, this isn't anything different to Apple or Google. They both do it, however for Google at least, it is an OPT OUT option.

If I remember correctly, Windows 8 had removed the DVD playback from all their versions unless you had paid for the Media Pack (or you upgraded from a Windows 7 version with this feature enabled).

This was to reduce the overall cost of fee's that Microsoft had to pay to various patent/rights consortiums. For a short period of time they did however offer the media center pack for free. I picked it up and have used it the grand total of.... zero times. Hell, I haven't used WMP for many years, even for DVD playback.

Now if it supported Blu-Ray playback, I wouldn't have to have spent money on getting PowerDVD....

Interestingly though, the Video app supports MKV containers. A container which is predominantly used for anime/film pirate downloads...

Accordng to their EULA for win10 this is 't an opt in or out option at this time, it is automatic. It not only tracks data of app usage but can include key logging, e-mail address and personal data. I only brought it up in an effort to provide some disclosure as many don't read the agreement and aren't aware if how much personal info could be tracked without the choice to not allow. As of now you can't even disable the service from running.

And you're correct that it could be just for operating certain features and not too different from other such tracking services. And like you said those other services provide an option to opt in or out. Perhaps win10 will eventually provide the option as well.

I thought that was just for testing, and would be disabled in the stable version. (At least for people who actually get a proper license. Perhaps not for those who try sticking with a test installation for free.)
