Lol that figures. There have been plenty of classic TV shows (such as Star Trek and the afore mentioned Wonder Woman) where the various standard uniforms/outfits got subtly tinkered with from season to season. Hope springs eternal that they'll finally realize the silliness of the "dreaded black tights" and maybe she'll just (without any overt fanfare) stop wearing them at some point.

Hmmm.. if anything, they could opt to lighten them... and when they realize that it dont look so good that light, for the dark ones, they could just switch to the classic nude colors. :P

Oh at this point I'm just quibbling about this just to quibble. Like I said before I'm still going to watch the show regardless.

Even if they shifted Ms. Benoist's tights more towards a "nude" color I'd probably just grumble "Why bother with that when they could've just gotten rid of them completely?" As I think I mentioned before the character historically never worn tights of any kind - I'm simply responding to the TV show with the simplistic logic of "Why start now?"

To be honest I can't really explain why this tiny semi-pointless detail is so irksome to me beyond that it just is... that's all. *shrugs*

Probably because they Really really wanted her to have a comicbook type of short skirt.. and the only way to get that to happen is leg covers. :/ You know, some parents might complain about the camera looking up her skirt when flying?!? :P

Oh I wouldn't be surprised if that was at least a part of the reason for it.

We're living in an age where Playboy can apparently make more money with its print magazine by dropping the "fully nude" pics and Miley Cyrus is mostly taken as a semi-redundant joke for her silly attempts at "shocking" us with her pseudo-nude twerking. There seems to be a vaguely growing trend back towards less "revealing" visuals in mainstream media in general. Heck, even the sci-fi/fantasy shows of the 60s and 70s seemed to get away with more overt "eye candy" than any network show of the last 10-15 years dared to dream of.

Still the idea of forcing her to wear "modesty tights" is pretty lame all things considered. Because this Supergirl show is on CBS I would have assumed the chances of seeing any significant "upskirting" would have been about 0.00001% regardless.

I definitely plan on catching up on it...sometime when I have more time. Gotham is off my viewing list. My morhid curiosity has limits and my spare time is limited.

I had finally managed to

I had finally managed to binge-watch the first 8 episodes of Supergirl in December only to have renewed business travel force me to miss the latest 2016 eps so sadly I'm behind once again. Just need to find the time to catch up - again.
At least like Redlynne said it has been pretty good so far. I think Benoist is doing a fine job juggling the character's dual identities without either one being too sappy or groan-tastic. It's been getting good reviews/ratings and I'm cautiously optimistic they'll get at least a few seasons out of it. They're already seriously talking about having a crossover with the "Arrowverse" towards the end of the first season so they might spawn some fun stories out of that.
P.S. By complete accident I recently stumbled over a fun little photoshoped fan pic of the Supergirl outfit without the dreaded black tights:

At least I can take solace that at least one other person out there shares my opinion that she'd look better without them lol. At any rate we know that Melissa (the actress herself) doesn't NEED the tights to hide bad thighs as the following unaltered pics from the pilot ep demonstate:

Yeah, Melissa is turning out

Yeah, Melissa is turning out to be a FANTASTIC actress(!) ... way above and beyond what I was expecting. And you haven't even gotten to the episodes where as an actress she has to do some pretty hefty "juggling" of identity around all of the aspects that make up Kara (of which there are quite a few!). Even the supporting cast is turning in outstanding performances every single episode.

The great JMS of Babylon 5 fame said that every season, no matter what the show, there's always going to be a "clunker" of an episode in there somewhere in which things just don't come together all that well and you can't quite pull off what you were envisioning. It's kind of inevitable that every season you're going to just have a "bad" episode somewhere that isn't as good as the other ones. Well, I'd like to think that the "bad" episode of this season has already happened, where things didn't come off quite as well as they could have ... but even then, the STORY of the episode was a pretty good one and has wound up being incredibly important continuity-wise going forward since it has been driving multiple plot threads ever since. And even *then*, I think that Melissa Benoist turned in a pretty good performance for that episode, even if she wasn't always as "believable" as I would have liked in that episode. What was being asked of her as an actor is a REALLY HARD thing to accomplish, and for the most part I think she made it happen, although there was still room left over to make it work better.

Anyway, I'm just saying that for anyone who loves the genre, Supergirl is really really well done show.

As for the "hated tights" thing, I also have to wonder about the logistical/practical side of things for making television, in which having the tights on for the beauty shots then makes it possible/permissable for Melissa's stunt double to wear actual leg protection for stunts, rather than risking exposed bare skin when being slammed into dirty objects. Because that's the thing about action scenes involving women. The female stunt doubles have to do everything the men do while wearing less protection in order to keep the sex appeal going while doing their stunts. Mind you, I have no confirmation for this of any kind, it's just a supposition on my part, but it's something that would make sense, given the realities of television making, and the inherent dangers involved in doing stunts.

Mind you, I still think the dark tights are fine, especially since they de-emphasize her legs (which as Lothic has pointed out ARE FINE) and zero-sum game direct attention up to her bared neck and face while wearing the Supergirl costume as being the "brightest and whitest" part of her character composition when in costume. And I'm just fine with the subtle "I'm up here, boys" subtext underlying that costuming choice, even if Melissa does have extremely beautiful legs.

I'm willing to accept that there may be all sorts of "behind the scenes" reasons the tights might be making some sense here ranging from stunt protection to costume color management. I'll just point out that pantyhose/tights come in practically every subtle shade and/or opacity you could imagine and it would not have been too hard to have chosen a compromise to the relative extreme of the full black tone.
I have nothing against black tights in general or even for superhero outfits - I just don't like that the tights in this particular case are the only overtly black thing she's wearing. To me it sticks out the same as a guy wearing a classic tudexo with a lime green bow tie. If she absolutely MUST wear tights for whatever reason why not some kind of mid-ranged skin tone like many of the examples below:

Just saying they could have found a neutral shade that would have actually de-emphasized the "brightness" of her legs as you say. By going all the way to black they ironically (for me at least) HIGHLIGHTED her legs with a color that strikingly doesn't match any of the other bold/natural colors she's wearing.
P.S. Just for the sake of discussing the overall question of the need for tights while making TV/movie versions of superheroines I'll just mention tangentially that the new Wonder Woman seems to work well enough without them even while sporting the generally "darker" color palette that's popular for today's comicbook heroes:
