However many you get you’ll end up wishing you had at least one more.
Cyclops...come sit down please...we need to have a talk.
But in all seriousness I think 8-12 wouldn't be a bad start.
"If I am to die in battle, Remember me for who I was and not what I've become..."
If the game monetization is going to be essentially "buy once, play for free thereafter, but there's a microtransaction store too", and assuming they sell character slots in that store, I would probably give people who just buy the game itself X slots, where X is the number of different classes (or archetypes, or whatever) that they have at startup.
Then when they roll out the new pet-based class, they can sell a package deal of the new class unlock, and a slot to make one, plus maybe some random other stuff.
So if they're planning on having 5 different classes, then I'd say 5 slots included with the up-front game purchase, one for each class.

12? Obviously you lack true altaholic dedication.
After playing CoH for 8.5 years I ended up with several dozen alts but it wasn't like I instantly had 40+ alts back in 2004. I tend to stick to each alt I'm playing for a relatively long time before I "jump" to another one so I could easily go several months at a time without creating a new alt.
So as far as how many extra slots I'll get it'll pretty much depend on how many we get "for free" with the basic account. I'll probably buy 5 or 10 extra at the start (just to give MWM some extra up-front money) but it's possible I won't even get around to using those slots for months/years.

I know we have Cyclops to thank for all manner of interesting and controversial threads he's started. But before we start rehashing old arguments, I recommend perusing this thread: https://cityoftitans.com/forum/starting-character-slots to see if anything we want to say here hasn't already been argued to either resolution or deadlock there.
If you just want to chime in with your opinion anyway, I'm nobody to stop you. And I don't want to discount anyone's input or make anyone feel deflated. I just wanted to make everyone aware that many issues that could be potentially brought up here may have been brought up at least once before about nine months ago, and there might be some points there worth considering before you finish saying whatever it is you want to say here.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.
This is the reason I didn't technically Cyclops' direct question here and just chose to briefly describe what I'm planning to do. *shrugs*

Was that thread solely devoted to Cyclops? Why is it that when some in this community want to engage in a little tongue-in-cheek humor, some serious minded adult imposes themselves to destroy the fun. It's one of Cyclops' threads, so everyone knows that they are geared towards humorous ends. If you have no sense of humor, then don't get involved. Save your serious attitude for threads elsewhere located.
I know that I had an alt addiction, especially when it came to CoH with the amount of slots they gave you upfront.(Until later on of course).
But I don't know if it is perhaps me being older or what, but I will probably spend more of my time with just one character and do as much as I possibly can with that character before exploring other characters. Character in this case being different than powers. I may create/delete a concept a few times to start off with to make sure that the powers are a good fit for what is going to be my main character.

I had 108 characters, across all of the servers, in CoH. I'm going to need a few extra slots in CoT.

Me too! 8 slots on every server....

Interestingly I tend to do the opposite of you Lothic. I make a ton of alts and play them all for a few levels until I find one that "clicks" for me, then I main that character (though I will still play multiple other characters concurrently). The rest I may keep if I found them interesting, or I might reroll when I feel the need for a new alt (likely repeating the process of rolling many and picking one of them to focus on).
I'll likely have my character slots filled within the first few weeks, then repeatedly make/delete characters until my roster is full of characters that I want to keep (then I'll buy more slots :P).
It's always interesting to see how other people play the same game differently from one another.
I'm sure everyone approaches the whole alt thing differently - that kind of flexibility is really one of the key strengths of a game like this.
To be clear I didn't absolutely strictly stick with only one alt at a time in all cases. For instance if I joined a PUG that needed a different kind of character I might temporarily jump on another older alt to play with that team. I'm just saying that whenever I decided to roll up a new "main alt" I usually spent a majority of my time focusing on that single new alt instead of trying to hop back-n-forth a few minutes per play session with multiple alts every time I logged in. Hope that made sense.
Also regardless of whichever "main alt" I was working on at the time I always had my "inner circle" of 3 or 4 original main characters that became my main badging characters. I easily spent thousands of more hours playing with those core characters than I ever did any other alt.

I had quite a few concepts I wanted to play out, but in the end, I only had one I really RPed and a couple I liked to RP just a little, and others, while I loved the concepts, I didn't RP as much.
Usually for various reasons.
I did pretty much the same. By the end of the game I had about 30 characters under level 20, and maybe 5 that I got to 50. 3 of those became my mains. 1 was my “main main”, Safehouse, my totally maxed out NRG/NRG blaster. He was my RP guy, the inspiration of the MC of the novel series I’m working on, and the first character I intend to recreate (actually, when Gunner comes to be, I will be able to truly build the character I always intended). Then I had my scrapper, Del Mannsfield- just a super fun elec/regen - and my fire/time corruptor Tempoflare. But I digress for a trip down memory lane...
Long story cut short, it took me a lot of alts and exploration to find those “archetypes and powers” that fit my playstyle. Can’t recall how server structure will be, but I’m a big proponent of 12 per server.
How many were there available per server by the end of CoH?
Name: Safehouse
Ranger: Gunner

Tertiary: Kinetic Melee

CoH eventually allowed up to 48 per server if you were a VIP (subscription player) and 36 otherwise.
Remember though that CoT is not going to have "separate named servers" like CoH did - it's all just going to be one big "virtual server". So if CoT is going to allow people to have roughly the same number of "alts per account" then technically we'll be able to have hundreds of slots all mixed together and available without having to be split across multiple servers.
Considering that a "character" (all its corresponding build/bio/costume data) could probably be saved in a compacted form that probably only takes like maybe 25kb of data at the most a modern MMO game could probably easily maintain millions of game characters on just 10 or 20 terabytes of disk space. There really should not be a serious limitation on the number of character slots we should be able to get per account.

Yeah I tend to play the same two or three characters for a couple weeks to months depending on how hard they are to level to max. For me, I would be happy with at least one per archetype but preferably two per archetype. Keeping in mind how very many variations there will be to create. If I get at least one more slot every time I max a character then that will help too but for the first few months one per archetype will be sufficient for me I believe.
"A sad spectacle. If they be inhabited, what a scope for misery and folly. If they be not inhabited, what a waste of space." ~ Thomas Carlyle
Allow me a moment to marvel at the fact that Paragon studios allowed non-subscribed players that many slots. Really really cool.
I had forgotten about CoT’s planned server structure. I like the idea of all my characters being in one place. I had the occasional issue where the character I wanted to play for certain scenarios with friends was on one server while my friend was on another.

Yeah they were pretty good about adding more slots over time. IIRC, when CoH first launched they only allowed 8 character slots per server.
I played about 98% of my time on Virtue so I pretty much never ran into the "character on the wrong server" problem but I obviously could see how that would have sucked. Regardless that should not be an issue for anyone in CoT.
Looking back at the main wiki page talking about CoH character slots it states that a VIP player could (at max) have 768 characters per account. I would think MWM would have to be prepared to handle at least the same amount if not more for CoT accounts.

I have 39 toons in CO, but that game is like 9 years old. IMO, the minion customization system may cut that number down drastically to like 15. Pending if you can customize every sidekick or henchmen. Way too much work keeping up with 39 toons. I am not a 19 year old pizza boy or bagger anymore.
Most of my toons are puns or spinoffs of groups, Thunder Cats, X-Men, Black Panther, Digimon, Power Rangers, Voltron, Transformers, Justice League, etc. With copyrights in mind of course. If henchmen customization allows us to customize every minion, I will just turn my henchmen into alts. If not, guess I gotta churn out the alts man.
As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.
I think there is a big difference between these two thread. The one you point to is about how many we should get when buying the account while I believe Cyclops was asking about a good starting amount by immediately buying extra slots.
I would be fine with 5 slots at launch; 1 for each class. Then as many more as you want for an honest, fair price (either through continued paid subscription or pay per slot).
Personally, I think 5 is a good number for launch, 15 once the initial 3 free months of VIP are up and you continue paid subscription, then up to, say, 50 if you buy per slot.
I'm going to take a different approach to this game compared to my norm. I want to really appreciate and enjoy every part of this game so I'm planning one, single character to create at launch and play to at least level 15. I think that should give me enough time to really experience that class beyond the initial few levels and allow me to decide to keep going or try something new. My reasoning for this is in the past, I would create alts left and right to a very low level trying to find the funnest one...but I've learned that many times you really don't get a good sense of how fun that class might be in the long run once you get past the lower levels and get most, if not all, of your abilities and can really experience that class.
Since I plan on solo'ing a lot, at least in the first few months of the game going live, I'll probably start with a tank character. I've never really been a fan of playing a tank class in groups, not sure why, but I enjoy them solo'ing. After that who knows. If it seems like teaming up is a positive experience for the most part my 2nd character will probably be a support healer as that's what I've enjoyed playing the most in groups. But again, my goal is to soak in as much of the game as I can my first go round, to really experience all the thousands of hours of work that have gone into it, so I am going to do my best to not be an altaholic from the get go.

If I recall, maxing out a character was going to open a new character slot, correct? In which case alting won’t require a bunch of slot purchases unless you want to level up different characters simultaneously.
I think I probably went through 15 or 20 characters before I really clicked with my very first "main" (A Grav/Kin controller, Greyspace, who interestingly enough never made it past the mid 30s). That's not to say that I didn't like any of those other alts (if I hadn't I wouldn't have stuck around long enough to make so many of them, right?), but up to that point none of them really held me the way Greyspace did. (I think it was mostly Propel, cause that was a hilarious power.)
I don't really have a good idea of how many characters I had at the end, I wasn't ever really big on third party trackers or anything and after so many years I can't really remember (I've never really gotten into RP, which I think would have pushed me in that directions just so that I had somewhere to flesh out/record their stories). I know I had a full roster on Virtue, as well as several pages on Guardian (my original server), Freedom and Victory. I also had a few alts here and there on other servers, but either rarely ever played them, or only made them when I was building bases for people's SGs and never bothered to delete them.
Best estimate... Over a hundred total? About a quarter of those level 50s (and a grand total of I think two level 50(+3)s, cause I mostly didn't bother with Incarnate stuff, except on my Time/Fire defender).
Ultimately the bare minimum number of slots I hope we start with is 5 (one per archetype), but I'm hoping for more like 10. Either way I'll still end up with like 20 in short order, likely expanding regularly from there on, so yeah.
The answer to this, life, the universe, and everything, is 42.
Using 42 as the answer to everything...my entire life just fell into place. I no longer have questions. Beam me up, Scottie.

I'm sure I'll make at least one of each archetype pretty quickly just see how each plays but one of the sources of my altaholism in CoH won't be a factor in CoT: the naming convention.
In CoH, if inspiration struck me for a character concept, I'd immediately log on (or as soon as possible) and see if the name was available, and if it was, I'd make the character right away because the name might not be available the next day.
I would play it for a bit and if it didn't "feel right" I'd usually delete it and free up the name (squatting on a name "just 'cause" is a dick move) but I still ended up with dozens of alts that I only worked on rarely.
I feel like I will probably be a lot more restrained in my creation of alts since there won't be any pressure to reserve a cool name as soon as I think of it.
That's what happened in CO. I have less than ten alts, there (of course there may be other reasons for not playing CO a lot LOL).
"I don't think you understand the gravity of your situation."
Yeah the whole global naming system will change how people alt and name their characters in CoT. I must admit some of my most creatively named characters in CoH were based on the fact that often my first, second, third and so on choices for names were already taken and I'd have to waste what seemed like hours to finally come up with workable alternatives (that weren't like ***W0Lv3rin3***).
Now that we can just start with any names we want I'm likely to end up with guys named like "Fred" because I'll no longer be challenged to come up with anything better. ;)

The truly sad thing is that even without unique naming restrictions, ***W0Lv3rin3***s will still exist because people are awful and there are those who think that ***W0Lv3rin3*** or xXxKillinJooxXx actually ARE cool names.
I always thought the people whom unironically liked those kind of names were edgy pre-teens and teenagers.
Oh sure the CoT global naming system won't prevent idiots/kids from being idiots/kids. I don't think any game system could ever prevent that. ;)
But at least back in CoH whenever you ran across one of those l33t names there was at least a tiny possibility that you were dealing with someone who was so desperate for a given name that they were willing to spell it in a goofy way just because the system was "forcing" them to do it. Now in CoT if you ever see that it'll be because the person "wanted" to spell it that way. There will be absolutely NO excuse for it now. ;)

I agree with Lothic. Just look at CO and DCUO. You see good and bad names in both, but in DCUO it is rare to see a name that doesn’t look like somebody’s password, rare enough that when I see an actual “good” name it comes as a pleasant surprise. In CO it’s much more rare to see L33+M@n characters because the naming system works like CoT will.
I once saw an Angle Kiler in CO. I don't know how one kiles an angle but that guy? He does it.

My assumption is that he doesn’t kill angles, he kills from angles. Like he shoots around the corner of a building or attacks you from your blind spot. Sounds like a tedious gimmick to maintain though...
The "Kryptonite" of a guy like that would be to just stand right in front of him face to face. Maybe he'd shoot himself in frustration of not being able to get any "angles" on you. :)

CO had that, but changed it because of $$$.
As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.
BECAUSE I Alt-o-holic and BECAUSE there will be unlockable (or purchasable) costume extras, Im going to sit with FOUR characters, till at least ONE is max (starting 30), but Imma go all out with their costumes right out of the gate.
Yeah, but realize alt-a-holics dont get characters to max. At least not in the quantity that they make new ones =P
That falls under the “leveling characters simultaneously” category.
"WHATS A GOOD NUMBER OF CHARACTER SLOTS FOR AN ALTAHOLIC LIKE ME?"
I'd say ten, but at the moment I'd gladly take one.
"THE TITANS ARE COMING! THE TITANS ARE COMING!"
I believe 8 to be a good number of initial slots.
I understand the logic of one per Archetype which would be fine if we had multiple servers to jump around in.
To the best of my knowledge we are still rolling with one grand server so 5 seems a little limiting to me.
I can pretty much guarantee I will purchase more slots but I would like to be able to wait at least a month before I do so.
I know there will be characters like Guat Guat Go Bot, a demonically possessed toy robot manufactured in Guatemala, who I am sure will probably reach the grand level of 12 but is still fun to occasionally fight Rooks with whom I won't want to delete.
Yes I'm that kind of altoholic it seems and I am pretty sure it will start the moment the game goes live.
I dont know if any of that makes sense, it's been a LONG two days, but I vote for 8 slots based upon the unified server.
Hi. I'm Hope.
