What was your most dramatic CoH moment?

What would you cite as your most dramatic moment? What stirred your emotions?

For me, it was the death of multiple cat-themed sidekicks strewn about near a multi-dimensional teleporter, courtesy of that arch-fiend, Proteus!

It is not only as vivid now as it was 5+ years ago, but it gave AK a great incentive to bring that fiendishly fiendish fiend to justice! As an avid roleplayer, it also stirred my creativity and empathy, bringing me the closest I ever felt to actually *being* Amerikatt and reacting as she would!

By all the gods, that was an

By all the gods, that was an emotional scene for me, too, all of those clones of ME dying to protect my world. Seriously good mission-writing there.

I also had a bit of a frission during that one mission with the Circle of Thorns, when the chief bad-guy summons shadow-clones of the party, and I've got to go in there and fight against Myself... Except, as tough as he was, that clone had no Brains, no strategy, no tactics. So my team just flattened those poor clones and I was doubly incensed against the Circle-guy, for hurting people I was supposed to protect and then thinking his second-rate doppelgangers were going to beat me and my team.

Be Well!

We had a lot of drama

We had a lot of drama concerning Supergroups (e.g. prestige rating) and Hami Raids and Forums and Global Channels et al, so it would be hard to pin one down. The most memorable were the epic fun times I had with my circle of friends, especially our 16-man Hami Raid.

I vaguely remember a mission

I vaguely remember a mission where AK had to fight her poor, misguided doppelganger, whose uniform was reversed (predominantly pink rather than purple). She was so sure that she was the real AK!

I am glad that you were also emotionally-agitated in that mission against Proteus.

*extends "the paw" at Proteus's memory*

For me, quite possibly the

For me, quite possibly the most dramatic moment playing Redlynne happened relatively early on when she was still in her mid/late-20s levels. I was with a team fighting Freakshow inside an instance in a building in west Independence Port. Except that the map transitioned from being a Warehouse map into having a secret entrance into a 5th Column Base, and we were getting pretty deep. It felt like we were getting close to the end of the mission map, and of course, being now on a 5th Column underground tile set we were looking at close quarters and bad sight lines for being able to tell what was around corners. I think this was like Issue 3 or 4 at the time (so 2005 time frame, using SOs for everything).

Anyway, we scoped out a huge pile of Freakshow and 5th Column around a corner, and we could see a Freakshow Boss in the mix. The whole dogpile was in a really small space around a bad corner, so we couldn't see everyone who'd come pounding after us, but figured we'd have it handled. Okay, standard tactics, dive in and lay waste to them. Take out the Freakshow Boss first ... blah blah blah ... okay, go.

So our aggro magnet dives in to try and take out the Freakshow Boss ... and was doing okay for about 4 seconds ... and then faceplanted in the middle of this swarm of Freakshow and 5th Columnists. A couple seconds later, a Scrapper goes down. And then another one drops. Within 15 seconds, there were like 3 of us standing and I was telling everyone who could still move to make a fighting retreat. We needed to fall back to fight on better ground to try and regain control of the battlefield. So I got our Empath moving back and I and another Scrapper are trying to fall back to "hold 'em" in a narrow choke point tunnel to prevent this horde from getting past us. Problem is, there's WAY MORE of them than there are of us at this point, and green bars are not doing so hot. We keep getting forced back and forced back. Every so often, I'm taking a HUGE hit to my green bar, and I can't even see what it is that's hurting me because there's just so many mobs up in my face.

And then the other Scrapper goes down. Now it's just me, playing my MA/SR Scrapper and an Empath that I'm trying to protect so as to avoid a complete team wipe, and the Empath keeps wanting to go on the offensive, which will just draw aggro onto them (which they won't be able to withstand) meaning I won't be able to protect them.

And then one of those "Wait, what?" moments happens.

The reason why we'd been doing so poorly this whole time was that there was a 5th Column BOSS around the corner that we'd never seen and up until this point hadn't even known was THERE, and there were so many mobs and so much visual clutter in the confusion that it was almost impossible to notice that there was a Boss in the mix that nobody had accounted for. And what keyed me in to all of this was that somehow, the Empath behind me must have gotten just a little too eager, or I'd backed up just enough during this fighting retreat, such that the Empath was now in range of the 5th Column Boss's attack ... and he was using a SHOTGUN ... and by this time we'd downed enough Minions for me to finally be able to hear the sound of that Shotgun going off over all the other audio noise of Powers going off everywhere.

So at this point I'm still fighting the original Freakshow Boss, trying to get him to drop, over a half dozen Minions and Lieutenants swarming around, plus a 5th Column Boss that NO ONE had known or noticed was even there, but I finally hear a shotgun sound FX over the confusion of battle and ... my Empath drops behind me. It was like an "out of nowhere" sort of Boom! Headshot! and the Empath faceplants.

I'm fighting all alone, and I'm already hurting.

I'm probably outnumbered 10:1 at this point, with at least 2 of those 10 being Bosses, only one of which I knew about and the other one was "hiding" somewhere in the fray.

Things are Not Looking Good™ for Our Heroes at this point, since I'm the only one left.

But the thing was, I was playing MA/SR, and I'd been investing my Slots into my Defenses rather than my Offensive powers, so my damage output was lousy, but I was verging on NO GET HITSU!! territory against the attacks all these Freaks and 5th were throwing at me, so I wasn't all that worried about them. But what I couldn't deal with was AoE attacks ... and there was a 5th Column BOSS somewhere behind that dogpile of hatred USING a frickin' SHOTGUN on me, which did Cone AoE damage that I had almost no Defense against. And because it was a Boss shooting that shotgun, it HURT! BAD! Like 20% of my green bar or more per hit! And he could hit me pretty reliably!

So suddenly, finishing off the Freakshow Boss who couldn't hit me wasn't my highest priority anymore. But I couldn't get through the dogpile in the tight tunnel to get to the 5th Column Boss who had a ranged (cone) attack that could hit me. So I retreated even further back to get to some open space where the mobs I was fighting could spread out a little bit, and in the process I could put some corners between me and that shotgun until I was ready to make my move.

More fighting retreat.

Finally I got to a place where the mobs could try to swarm all around me, and that's when I spotted the 5th Column boss IN THE BACK of the pile and saw his shotgun. 4x Defense Inspirations. Spend Damage Inspirations. Spend Health Inspiration.

YOU.
You are now my $Target.

Jumped over everything that had clustered up around me to get at the 5th Column Boss and started laying the smackdown into him. Everything else of course swarms around me to continue with MISSing like they had (including the Freakshow Boss) while I go to town on the ONE THREAT that had a weapon that could hurt me easily+massively that no one else had seen/noticed and who had torn through our team like running water through tissue paper.

I got lucky and took the 5th Column Boss down.
Then I turned around and resumed the beatdown on the Freakshow Boss.

At this point, I was taking less incoming damage than I was regenerating, so my green bar started slowly refilling and a Whole Lotta Whiffing by the remaining mobs went on, including by the Freakshow Boss. Once the "hidden" 5th Column Boss was dealt with, it was almost easy.

A couple of people had gone to the Hospital rather than wait to be revived, and they were STILL in transit, working their way down to where I was when I finished off the last opponent and took a long breather coming off my Scrapperlock rush. In the chat window, I'm seeing people saying how amazed they are that I'm still alive. I'm telling them that ... yeah ... me too. We meet up and start heading all the way back to where the disaster began and find out that the fighting retreat had covered about half the map that we'd explored. It was a LONG way back to the (double) Boss room. When we get there, like 3 of my teammates are still there, faceplanted, because they don't have Wakies, and they were too gobsmacked by seeing that Redlynne was surviving that onslaught that took down like 6 people, and they wanted to know if I'd make it or not (and if I didn't how long I'd be able to hold out for). One of the guys faceplanted in such a way that the only thing you could see of his avatar was his boot sticking out of piece of terrain, because he fell over through it.

I'd built Redlynne to play as a "pocket tank" who was Defensive first and Offensive second, but that particular incident showed the PROMISE of the build that I was making, where it was not only possible I'd be the last one standing in the event of a Team Wipe, but also the one to deliver the Final Hit and then proceed to pick up the pieces so we could get the band back together.

Many years (and Invention Sets) later ... history repeated itself, sort of, on an Imperious Task Force while I was playing with my Supergroup, Hero Dawn. We were destroying the Control Box when ... the next phase of Robots activated and ... Redlynne was suddenly all alone, fighting the control box, with all the aggro in the world on her because everyone else was kissing the ground. For at least the next two minutes plus I soloed my way through being shot at by some 20+ Robots while trying to keep my DPS as high as I could manage while intermittently using Aid Self in the middle of a 4th of July Show that was trying to kill me. My SG basically formed a bucket brigade of passing Inspirations to each other, and someone was close enough to me to give them to me, so I was just getting fed Inspirations into my inventory almost as fast as I could use them. After the first minute of not joining the Wipe on the floor, some of my SG mates were just like ... "OMG, Red's still going" ... until someone (I forget who) started chanting "Redlynne! It's your birthday!! It's your birthday!!" to cheer me on through the chat.

Not quite as long story shortened ... I lived ... the control box didn't. My SG mates could barely believe it, and they'd watched me do it.

Later, I would take that same performance on Mothership Raids and grab the aggro of 5 Rikti Magus at once and keep them all focused on me even though they were mez monster Elite Bosses until the cavalry could arrive to deliver enough damage to beat them into submission.

There was a reason why I set my title as being The Extraordinary Death-defying Redlynne. ^_~

It was going to be the battle

It was going to be the battle of the ages...a 5ft tall, with blonde hair that went down to her butt armed with nothing but her red cap daggers, dressed in over-sized heavy buckled boots and gloves and a thong leotard only a real superhero could handle versus a wanna be god named Imperius.

However, this wanna be god would not make it easy for our hero, as he may have towered over her, but he knew, she may just be the one to take him down, so he sent armies after her. Forced her to chase him through tunnels infested with evil alien body snatchers as we all know kheldians were really evil.

However, she battled on through, never falling to the foul warlords soldiers and alien allies.

Finally, she would come face to face with him. It wasn't as easy as she would hope. Forgoing any inspiration she may have found in her one on one battle with the one who would be a god. Hitting and running when needed, standing toe to toe the other times, she had him on the ropes. He was begging for help from the higher powers, afraid to be bested by a short beautiful hero clad in an outfit in which may have made his heart race, when the higher powers answered his call...their wrath brought down upon the hero, they challenged her with the one challenge she could not meet...

DISCONNECTED FROM SERVER?!?!?!?!?! WHAT THE F...!!!!!!!!!!

Returning from the temporal shift the higher powers sent her through, she found herself back at the beginning...this was not a happy hero...tiny hand gripped those daggers tighter as she made her way through armies of a would be god...only this time...that one warrior...she believes his name was Bob...wouldn't get in that sneak attack that would chop her long flowing hair into a serrated uneven bob.

Meeting Imperius again for the first time, she finally bested him, leaving him unconscience at her feet.

One time (probably the only

One time (probably the only time) I was on missions with my Peacebringer, along mostly as damage. We had a dedicated tank, healers, dpm folks, controllers, the usual.

Cut to one encounter with several mobs that got *way* out of hand. The tank drops and everyone else starts to get whittled down, then the healer dropped. Then another....

"Screw it," says I and popped out of squid form and into lobster form and proceeded to taunt the mobs on to me, even though I wasn't particularly specced out as a tank. Past experience indicated this would only delay the inevitable

Those of you who played a Kheldian know that the attacks are slow to come about, with just a punch and a foot stomp and one all-too-occasional self-heal. Well, somehow I managed to get the baddies all on me with that slow attack chain and the taunt whenever it would be available, and had just enough time to hold the aggro while someone else broke away and could feed the tank a wakie and then help the healer up as well.

That was a bout of luck that my super reflexes scrapper rarely saw, sadly. It did make some of the team re-think their bias against Khelds, however.

For drama moments, my go-to

For drama moments, my go-to character was Candle Fly, my Elec/Elec/Elec Blaster. Doing things no Blaster should ever try. No, not even then.

Back when Tyrant was was the endboss of the Praetorian missions, I started wondering if I could take him. At level 47. To the point where i asked around if people thought soloing Tyrant as an Elite Boss at -3 levels on a Blaster was even remotely possible. Answers ranged from "lolno" to "You're out of your mind." And one "If you're going to try, I want to watch!" So, in I went with a teammate who dropped team and used a stealth power to not be involved... and then the fight started. On a hard time limit because I was running on Defense inspirations. It was a hard fight, especially his eyebeams hurt a lot, but I managed to force Tyrant's retreat. Putting Candle Fly squarely in the "Do not mess with." bracket of crazy.

Secondly, there was that one time a Mind/Emp Controller friend and Candle Fly were doing a Praetorian mission, and then Dominique showed up. As an Arch-Villain. We expected Elite Boss. That was fun. That was not a fight we should have won, and a Blaster even with Emp buffs, should not be tanking an AV. But she did. Because she never really cared what she "should" be able to do.

Oh, and on that note, had a flying Trick Archer named Scarlet Feather. One a Woodsman mission, everything was going horribly and Woodsman was uncontrolled. So... she shot him, debuffed him, did all she could to get his attention. Then hit Unstoppable from the Epic Pool. Leading to the best "I have played this game far too much and am completely jaded about things by now" moment.

Teammate: "Hey, you have AV aggro."
Scarlet Feather: "I know."

That pretty much summed up everything about that moment. It's kind of amazing what you could do as a squishy who wasn't afraid of AVs anymore.

I thought of one of my most emotional.

I've had my text alert message as the CoH /tell sound for awhile now. I remember being in the office near the computer at some point not long after the shutdown, hearing the sound, and turning towards the monitor to check the game for a message. I was immediately reminded that the game wasn't around anymore when I saw only my desktop background waiting for me. I considered changing my text alert but nuts to that; City of Heroes 4 Life.

Statesguy almost made a great scratching post while he was standing on that boat in Independence Bay!

For someone of his supposed stature, he sure crashed into trees ... A LOT!!! (Guess who had to rescue him? *raises forepaw*)

Mmm. Most dramatic? Probably

Mmm. Most dramatic? Probably when I was a newbie level 8 or 9 running around The (old) Hollows, with a couple of guys I'd gotten to know while teaming for the story arc missions which were just not soloable at that point in time. Anyone who played CoH and did The Hollows zone at that time will know the missions I'm talking about. Later on it became much easier of course.

Anyway, we were killing some adds just randomly to unlock the instanced mission stage with the Igneous boss, when we overaggro'd. It was me (Regen Scrapper), an Empath Defender, a Dark Defender and a troller (I forget what kind). The D3 and the troller go down quickly and it's just the Empath and I. Now at this time I knew nothing about builds, about aggro-management, about kiting, about any of the staples in MMOs most of us now take for granted. So this was a tough fight, and I was quietly freaking out because We're All Going To Die(tm). So the Empath just says to me in chat, "stay close". I'm moving around to try and avoid getting hit while doing what damage I can and using my 1 cd to bring my health back up when possible. Running quite literally in circles around the Empath. The Empath is using 1 heal and an aura, and putting out a little damage. This is when I 'discovered' kiting. I was almost permanently at 10% hp or lower and only just managing to stay there. It was fun but (at this stage of my CoH and MMO experience) scary.

Much much later, I would use the skills I first acquired in that fight to do more impressive things, but nothing ever quite evoked the same feeling. That's what stays with me after all these years; the emotive feedback of that one fight.

Jack Emmert, former Lead Designer for CoH, and current Lead Designer for DC Universe Online.

I am not certain whether Statesguy was killed because he was Jack's character or if it was simply because he was the leader of the Freedom Phalanx and, thus, the most high-profile NPC in the game.

I am not certain whether Statesguy was killed because he was Jack's character or if it was simply because he was the leader of the Freedom Phalanx and, thus, the most high-profile NPC in the game.

He was also killed because, frankly, there wasn't anywhere left to go with that character.

I was happy to see him go, since Jack himself left CoH for greener pastures years prior and, frankly, was responsible for much of the ham-handing of ED. But I was just a player.

of all the moments in CoH

of all the moments in CoH that have stuck with me through the test to time....the one that sticks with me the most as the most dramatic moment, happened in the game's final week.

There we all were, coping with the fact that our world was coming to an end. My main at the time was 0DIN50N, my 4 level Incarnated Heroic Brute. We were on the beaches of Portal Corp Island, if i remember correctly, facing the multi spawned tentacles that was part of Lusca of Independence Port, but used as otherworldy horror tentacles. I remember floating above the beaches, waiting for a quadrant shout out for the next group of tentacles, dozens of heroes beside and beneath me, also waiting. Then the shout would come. Id scream my group up cry "T0 M3, MY N0BL3 3INH3R1J4R!! B4TTL3 4W4IT5!!" then casting the Incarnate bubble shield that granted nigh invulnerability for a few seconds.

With a shout of " B3H0LD!! TH3 LIGHT 0F V4LH4LL4!!" I would rush in, whether i was followed or not. Even though I know better, I like to think that people would follow that call into battle. It made it fun.

Then came the moment.

Out in the water, me and a posse of heroes took on a particularly dense group of tentacles. We made progress, but then heroes started to fall. We got to the one min mark, and i recast the super bubble. There were far fewer of us though, and it seemed like a second tentacle spawn had popped up around is. Before I knew it, i was alone, among like 3 tentacles with more around, and like 30 seconds before bubble refresh. I figured I was dead, but I wanted to see what it looked like, so I Scrolled out to the furthest PoV..........

All I could see, was an ocean of Giant Tentacles, the Ink attack they used spawned over and over again, the water of the ocean churning and frothing. Of my character, all i could see was a heroic golden electric outline, fighting valiantly in the Darkness, refusing to be brought low even though it was hopelessly outnumbered.....

And then they came.....Heroes.

Like the Charge of the Light Brigade, I suddenly saw bodies fly into the darkness. Other Silhouettes joined mine in the darkness, and suddenly the light was Brighter. We lasted til my bubble recharged, and I popped it, and it was like Christmas standing against the End of the World: a host of golden snowglobes sprang to life in the darkness, standing against the End.

It was a little like watching the Light of Human Existance stand against the Dark.....

......and it was Epic.

Of all the wonderful memories of that wonderful game that I have, THAT ONE is the one that stands out to me the most, as the most Dramatic moment in my CoH/V Career.

On the edge of your Perceptions......
Turn away and feel his hand upon your shoulder.....
Look for him and he shall not exist.....
in the middle of the crowd....lost in the faces....
Stands a Figure....of Gray......

Why not kill off Manticore, he had no where left to go. :p

It was a matter of killing off Jack's creations. Lost respect for them on that one.

Killing Manticore would have let him off too easily! Manticore was even more of a jerk than Statesguy! The best thing for him would have been to be killed, rezzed, killed, rezzed, etc., etc., etc.

The Freedom Phall-over And

The Freedom Phall-over And Phlail for Phailure group had really been eclipsed by the PCs once the Incarnate system went online. The only way they were the most powerful characters in existence was to CHEAT on the game mechanics (and even then, PCs were supposed to band together to defeat them).

But yeah, they killed off 3 signature characters in their Let's Murder Our Heroes arc, and every single one of them was a Jack Emmert creation ... and it was all done for Shock Value using a "Nobody" with so much Plot Armor that the whole arc was essentially playing with sock puppets. It was dumb, and it was badly written.

Whatever I, as a CoH player,

Whatever I, as a CoH player, might have thought about certain NPCs, AK still ran the gamut of emotions when something happened to those NPCs.

For instance, PCs liked to hunt Lusca in Independence Bay. However, Lusca, being a pal of AK's, was under her protection. So, when parties would be attacking Lusca, I would emote "Amerikatt heals Lusca for [varying amounts of] hit points!" I got *quite* a number of negative tells and zone shouts!

I also remember the giant tentacles in the boiling sea around Ouroboros and the mission where the PCs had to fight Naughty Spawns in the Atlas Park wasteland.

It also hit a major nerve to fight Shivans in the ruins of Galaxy City. That made for great play both in-game and in Forum RP! Katt-Girl's grandmother was lost in that attack and was presumed dead. Even though her grandfather (a well-known and respected Golden Age hero) survived physically, he was devastated emotionally when the servers were shut down, as the love of his life hadn't been found. Even "pep talks" from KG's "Uncle" Marcus didn't help. Only the solace of "Uncle" Michael and "Aunt" Cleo (BaBs and his wife) helped KG get through the crisis. AK ended CoH feeling like a total failure, as she was not able to save Galaxy City from destruction and could not even save one of the people who meant the most to her!

For me, it was soloing

For me, it was soloing Nemesis' Shadow Shard base on a +4/x8 setting with my Kat/Regen scrapper. The only thing that remotely compared would have been the first time I ran an ITF with the same character, teleporting into a certain anachronistic facility before the Tank could reach it.

It is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community.

Just because the servers shut down, doesn't mean the world died. Why not RP the continuing story?

I think that, with the Shivan

I think that, with the Shivan invasion and destruction of Galaxy City, that it can be taken as a given that Earth-P was overrun and is no more.

However, as an RP exercise, I concur with you that the story of AK's search for KG's grandmother might be something for me to explore in one of the non-CoT Forums. Who knows? Maybe it will give a piece of CoH back to the players, even cathartically. Thanks!

Thanks, Fireheart!

I was thinking about maybe putting something in the RP Forum, but I'll consult with Tippy-Toe and see what she thinks!

In my head fiction, the Heroes and villians of Earth P were able to evacuate most of Humanity into the DreamSpace. That plot point came to me by way of an amazing "Last Day" story someone was writing on the Forums (They may have been making a final week mission arc, i honestly cant remember all the details anymore). It Essentially came down to Tyrant/Emperor Cole, The Dream Doctor, and Mendor Silos using the power of Rularuu to create 2 separate earths just ouside of a Dimension trap placed around our Dimension by the Battalion to trap us in: One in the DreamSpace; I cant remember where the other was.

If I remember, Cole gave up his existance to use Rularuu's power one last time, Mender Silos, tired of all the struggle, went to an earth devoid of life to comtemplate his existance, The Dream Doctor and all the Heroes and Villains shepherded humanity off Natural Earth onto DreamEarth to await a time where they could be set free, and the Batallion arrived on prime earth in time for the trap to be altered, trapping them on Earth Prime....with a newly, fully incarnated amalgamation of Prime Hamidon and Praetorian Hamidon, giving them a fight to survive.

.......it was a bit convoluted, but I guess I needed the closure it provided me. :)

My shining solo moment, which

My shining solo moment, which I'm sure I've shared before but with perhaps weaker prose than the stories here, is MilkShakes versus Countess Crey. MilkShakes was/is/will be a Sonic Energy blaster. Our team, of 6 or so got into a fight with Crey and her minions. Within seconds I was the last one standing. Perhaps we were not prepared for this AV or something broke in our defenses and lead to a cascade failure of death. I dropped everything smaller than Crey with Dreadful Wail. I always built my blasters to recover from their nukes and be self sufficient. I think I used Conserve Power and popped some blues and purples or two. I turned and started hammering on Crey. I remember seeing chat afterward that said "Just run." It seemed some of my team mates were not interested in lying on the ground while I took on this Feat. I didn't see any of it. I was playing scrappers almost exclusively at the time, I rolled into that mindset, locked in, and plowed on. Whittling away point after point after point. Alternating my power boosts from the Energy Melee set. And then she was down. It was just done. It had taken ages and seconds in the magical breathless land of *lock.

My most dramatic moment in a team was in the very early days. Before the Hollows, before 50 was the top level. I was level 5 or 6 and had joined 4 others in Perez park where we were hunting Vahz, I think. We'd tackled a couple Eidolons or maybe COT mages in the open fields, but there weren't anymore at the moment. We decided to check out the forest. We were almost instantly lost (this was also before vidiot maps) We rounded a corner and immediately found ourselves besieged. I only remembered seeing purple text and strobing light and a monstrous beige figure. It happened so fast we were all dead. We all hosped immediately (cause that is what you did in the early days, also no rez, or wakies) on the way back to Perez Park one of the team mates asked, "What was that?" and I replied, "Purple People Eaters." We were young and still learning the game. We stayed clear of the forest and it's roaming monsters. We had of course run into a group of Lost with at least one Boss of the telekinetic variety which was level 8 or 9 and being a boss had purple text above his head and a flashing pink power fx.

CoH was my first MMO.

CoH was my first MMO.

Now, I'm an old-school gamer -- strategy, rpg, whatever -- but MMOs draw on a different sort of skill set. There was a whole different language to learn in terminology, and even simple stuff like pulling mobs, managing aggro, etc... these just weren't aspects of other computer games I'd played. Add to that the fact that I had a terrible time just handling the keyboard controls and tracking mobs as they moved. I was hopeless at Scrappers, because I couldn't judge distance and stay in melee range.

To make a long story short, when I first started playing CoH, I wasn't very good. And it took me a little while to figure out that I wasn't very good, because low levels were pretty easy regardless. And since I mostly soloed -- and since most of the people I ended up teaming with weren't very good either -- I didn't have much of anything to compare myself to.

But by the time my first characters got into the teens, it became apparent to me that I needed to do a major re-think. Whatever I was doing, it just wasn't cutting it. So I shelved the three or four characters I'd been playing, and I dug into the powersets, trying to figure out a character that would play to my strengths and just made sense to me.

The result was Shadowine, my illusion/Emp controller. I built her for two things: 1. to solo, and 2. to learn how to play.

Shadowine was an immediate upgrade on my earlier characters. Playing a controller slowed the game down enough that I could start to get a feel for it. I could study the mobs and approach combat methodically. And instead of just winging it as I leveled, I'd planned my power selections in advance and I stuck to that plan. The Illusion powerset had Spectral Wounds, which gave me enough punch early on to solo relatively quickly through missions. Then at 18 Phantom Army came on board and things really took off.

My most dramatic moment was her fight with Terra, the Devouring Earth AV.

This was early in CoH, maybe after update 2 or 3. This was before AVs got buffed, then got nerfed down to EBs for solo missions. I'd heard rumors of Scrappers soloing AVs, and for me, that seemed like the holy grail.

Normally back then, if you ran up against an AV in your mission, you went begging for help from anybody willing. Once I realized she was an AV, I figured that's what I'd have to do. But I was already in the mission, so I might as well let her kill me a couple of times before I recruited a team.

The fight went on FOR-EV-ER. I have no idea how long, but after maybe five minutes I realized that her health bar was a notch or two below full, and she wasn't killing me. This was back when an Illusionist could have multiple Phantasms out, and I always had two and sometimes three at a time, plus Phantom Army. I just kept slowly beating her down, and after I don't know how long, I realized that I was very... slowly... winning...

And eventually I won. I actually took down an AV. At that point, I didn't even know it was possible for a controller to do it.

I later found out that Terra wasn't exactly the toughest AV in the game. But that didn't matter. After beating her I felt like I'd finally achieved a certain degree of competence as a CoH player.
