What Sold You CoT?

Greetings,

I was wondering as to why you were sold on City of Titans? Was it the fact that you've been searching for a new home since City of Heroes went down.. Or could it be you've been looking for something within the superhero genre.. Or was it simply after reading the Kickstarter?

I'm just curious. :)

I've had a multiplayer supers game itch since CoH closed that the other contemporary Supers MMOs have been unable to scratch. Stumbled upon the successor projects, checked them all out and started following MWM's progress a bit more closely because what they were offering lined up more with my "vision of a proper CoH2". Not saying that I will ignore the other games, I'll certainly give them a shot if/when they go live (especially APR if it can realize it's potential). It's just that the plans the devs have for this game are a little more appealing to me than the others.

APR does look really good and it's interesting to see what they can come up with. I don't really care for the art style that Valiance Online is going with either so right now I like where CoT is going.

For me, it was the

For me, it was the Kickstarter that got me on board. But as to how I came across the Kickstarter is a bit of a romantic story.

(WARNING: Wall of feels incoming!)

The day I heard the news that City of Heroes was shutting down, I panicked. I immediately cancelled my account and uninstalled the game---destroying all of my screenshots, costumes, and story arcs in the process. I felt angry and confused, but knowing that the game's fate was sealed, I felt like the only thing I could do was to let go.

So I did. The world I once belonged to was nothing but a fleeting memory. I moved on to other games and other endeavors. For the longest time, I never looked back. As much as I missed it, it was gone, and I had accepted that.

But one day, on a whim, I decided to search for City of Heroes to reminisce and to see what fragments the game left in its dying wake. I expected the search to be like visiting the grave of a long lost love, but I wasn't destined to relive the game's bitter end. Rather than nostalgia, I instead felt a strange curiosity as I stumbled upon something called City of Titans.

I studied the City of Titans Kickstarter page, and after watching the video and learning about the project, something inside of me rekindled---something powerful. The mere notion that another game would rise from the ashes and follow in City of Heroes' footsteps brought me to tears. I was in total awe.

I started lurking in the forums soon thereafter, and after all I had discovered, I knew it was meant to be. I also learned of the other successor projects, but seeing how City of Titans was my first discovery and had such a strong presence at the time, I felt completely attached to it...

...and I have ever since.

for me it was a combination

for me it was a combination of things.
first and foremost was the fact that since coh closed i didn't find anything to come close to it and then i found out about this.
also the fact that this was done by formers players and fans, and their overall approach to this game, from what i read back then in the kickstarter sealed the deal so to speak for me.
since then i don't regret this decision for a minute, all i've seen and heard so far justifies my decision to donate.
i play other mmo's but still feeling the loss of coh.

I was around at the very beginning. When the call for the Plan Z project went up, even before it was called Phoenix Project. I was there on the Titans Network as thoughts ideas and pure will power started to jell together. I wasn't a heavy leader in the project but I was there. I even came up with a few ideas that I think are still in the plans.

Real life however dragged me kicking and screaming away. That and I realized my skills are way below what was needed. So I'm here cheering.

To me what distinguishes CoH

To me what distinguishes CoH from the other Plan Z projects is their focus on NOT just trying to mostly replicate CoH, but rather to use lessons learned from CoH as an inspiration from which to move onward and upward to make a truly next-gen spiritual successor, not just a replacement. I think this will, in the long run, lead to a much better and much more successful and viable game.

And I think they have a good handle on the things that made CoH successful--things like: easy, fun, flexible teaming, really dynamic movement and onscreen action physics in combat, powerful feeling powers, completely pimped-out over the top gorgeous costume creator, having a real classic comic book feel at the core yet being accessible to other genera interpretations, etc., etc.

And they're doing a good conceptual job of taking what worked, leaving what didn't, and fixing or improving where they see opportunities.

Just damn exciting--but a Herculean task for MWM, and well worth being patient and giving them the time that they need as far as I'm concerned.

After the announcement I

After the announcement I played CoH as much as I could, shutdown was 8am here and I played all night. I monitored the Titan network in the days after and found this project. I then looked for something I could do. My programming skills are not useful for this (nobody writes MMOs in COBOL or FORTRAN) and I have no particular artistic or writing talent so I offered help where I could and ended up modding the boards and doing a few odds and ends.

It is this project's vision and ethos that keeps me here. How would I encapsulate it ? something like "We're not rebuilding CoH, but we want people who played CoH to like it for the same reasons they liked CoH".

I've been lurking in the background since the day they announced CoH would be closing. I didn't participate in the Kickstarter because I had no idea who these people were or what skills they were bringing into this endeavor. I watched with amusement as politics and flames flew back and forth between the several different start ups, but that quickly died down as each group pursued their own path.

I'm here a bit more than the others simply because the updates come more regularly and the forums are more active. I often playtest Valiance Online and I contribute to the forums for Heroes and Villains and Atlas Park Revival. It has been interesting to watch the different direction each group is taking. I look forward to playtesting all of them if the opportunity is offered to me.

As each is commercially released, I will certainly sign up for at least three months in each game to explore their final product and test their communities. I don't know where I will wind up. It all depends on who brings the best game to the table and who builds the best community.

Thank you gents - you have perfectly articulated why I find CoT to be a bit more appealing than the others. The other successors seem to be looking to create a more faithful adaptation of CoH - and that's not a bad thing! While the old game had it's warts it still kept me highly entertained for 8 years (give or take a few months of breaks here and there). But, with lessons learned and the advance of technology I think there is room to improve an already great thing and I like the direction MWM seems to be taking this successor - so here I am.

CoH was my first MMO, so I didn't even realize all the things it got right until I tried others. This is when I realized how much I took a whole lot for granted. Today I look around at all the MMOs and it simply astounds me that other developers haven't made a study of this and tried more to emulate it in a real way. Instead they add a bit or piece and do so with much worse implementation than it was done in CoH. What draws me the most is what Minotaur stated, "We're not rebuilding CoH, but we want people who played CoH to like it for the same reasons they liked CoH". I very much think that they are on the right track. Also a big like for me is that this game is being built by players of CoH, who understand what they need to get right and where they might improve on CoH.

I reserve the right to have an opinion. You reserve the right to not agree.

Desperation sold me.

Desperation sold me.

Champions had a lot of good things, but general gameplay was a little too "action MMO" for me, and they were more old school in powers, with amplification by a handful of quasi-paper doll slots, and 5 points to select from a very limited set of power modification choices in Powerhouse (the training pocket universe where you could test new choices before locking in, an awesome thing by the way!)

It also had the twin evils of modern action mmo pvp -- short holds and a break free mechanism.**

I could find nothing scrapperlike, no scrapperlock feel whatsoever, and MMs were expected to do the bulk of pew pew damage, exactly the opposite of how I liked to play in CoH -- as a support char for the minions.

Most missions with pets involved Sim Ant Syndrome*, where everything made a beeline for me, so the counter strategy was to put up block the whole fight. Sigh.

DC Universe Online was even worse. It was difficult to feel tough, and extremely console-oriented, with being limited to something like 7 powers max usable at once. Plus the usual no-scrapperlock and micro-holds and even worse power customization (by which I mean amifying damage or other attributes of your choice, and bonus powers via slotting, and not the look of powers). Pets were close to non-existent and were more a fancy blast than real pets, very eastern MMOish.

* In ancient Sim Ant, you controlled the whole colony, and could take over any ant to make them spread scent trails to food. But the opposing colony always went after that ant. If you changed ants while they ran at your former ant, they immediately retargetted your new ant magically.

Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries also suffered from this. No matter what mech you used, they ignored your wingmen and came at you. Counter-strategy: Get in the fast zipper bot and train them around, while your wingmen in your Atlases D and K shredded them.

** I have no problems with controllers or defenders using their holds in PvP, just every class having two micro-holds and one break free mechanism.

CoX was my first mmo as well.

CoX was my first mmo as well. I remember following the development of that game for like 2 years until it was finally released and played to the bitter end. I would take breaks on and off to try different MMOs with newer and better graphics. Sure Champs and DCUO had really nice visuals which was the initial appeal. But I would always come back to CoX. CoX had a better game design with many powers and endless customization. And of course the tool bars! to this day i still cant get used to only use 7 or 8 powers at a time (Wildstar,DCUO,GW2,Tera,NEverwinter). They drive me nutz. i loved that I could have several trays open ( I ran with 5, as an 8 year vet you accumulate a lot of vet powers and pets) and customize their layout as well. WoW, Rift, SWTOR let me set up my UI's like that, but i got bored with those games. They just couldn't scratch that CoX itch.

I discovered the three

I discovered the three Spiritual Successor projects, more or less, at the same time.
Reading through the information available at each site, before much information about the actual planned games was available, I got the best "vibe" from CoT.
The mood on the H&V forums seemed downright hostile towards the other endeavors and turned me off almost immediately.
Valiance seemed okay and I even donated some money to them, but everything at CoT, from the devs to the community felt like "home" almost immediately.

In 2010 I bought a new computer, ostensibly to play Diablo III on it when that was going to come out (or was this 2011? I forget). In the meantime, before that came out, I decided to go back on my old CoX account and kick around, just to kick the tires on the new rig. I instantly re-fell in love with CoX all over again, and then a year later, they shut it down. Then there was the Kickstarter and the ability to get my own custom costume and building in the game was too good to pass up so I opted for Fashionista and the Mogul add-on.

All I can say is, when this game get's rolled out, you guys are going to be living in Radiac City, home of the Fighting Radiacs, population: Radiac.

I abandoned H&V after the negative comments regarding the CoT Kickstarter.

First, I came to the painful

First, I came to the painful personal conclusion fairly early on that with a mass exodus of both development and player talent, CoH was never again going to meet my expectations as a community or as an MMO. To those of you still involved in any "zombie-fied" version of CoH or have dreams of "putting the band back together" I sincerely say good luck and have fun in your activities... but this long time CoH player has chosen the option to move on.

After reading the Kickstarter I thought this effort had a chance of having universal audience appeal and deserved my financial support. I still believe that.

But in fairness, I must report that being "sold" on CoT has been a mixed blessing up to now. Everything I have seen so far artistically (both graphics and music) and technically (including what I know about game mechanics) has far exceeded my expectations. The Unreal4 engine itself is pretty amazing and I get the sense that these devs are gaining confidence every day on what to do with it. Unfortunately, the whole thing comes wrapped in (1) a highly unorthodox business model that so far has spent as much time praising/working with competitors as it has promoting its own product and (2) far too much baggage catering to one segment of the former CoH community. This is quite unnerving to people like me who, like I said, choose the option to move on.

I am fascinated to see how the whole thing turns out.

CoH was alwways my goto/return to game. Warcraft, back to CoH. Eve, back to CoH. DDO, back to CoH. Champions, back to CoH. I hope they get the "spiritual successor" stuff right, and there's plenty of threads discussing what that might mean.

Certainly the camaraderie looks good so far.

I was supportive of CoT when

I was supportive of CoT when it was Plan Z back on the Titan Network. I find the idea inspiring because so many people are coming together to make a viable Superhero MMO, in a market where nobody wants to break the mold. My only regret is that I wish I could give a more meaningful contribution. But I digress.

The reason I support CoT over the others is because CoT is not afraid to break the mold. They're taking what worked for CoH, but they're not afraid to ask themselves what can improved upon now that we have 10 years worth of technological advances. I also like a lot of CoT's ideas. Ascetic Decoupling, for example, could give us thousands of combinations for character concepts even if we only get a limited amount of power sets at launch.

Also, I like that CoT is making their own game; both in game and story. They are not following in CoH's footsteps, which is why I'm not too keen on some of the other successor projects. However, I'm also keeping tabs on Valiance Online, only because it's in pre-alpha (it's something I can touch). They made good progress, but I think they're not proposing as many radical ideas compared to CoT. To me, VO is coming across as the safer bet.

Good question, really. I

Good question, really. I think it has to do with both what City of Titans is trying to be, and what it is NOT trying to be. Maybe the latter moreso.

I miss City of Heroes, I think a lot of us here do, but I can't really say that if City of Heroes launched today with the features it had even at the end, hat it'd be a game I'd want to play. It aged, mostly gracefully, but it did show its age at the end. So, if City of Titans was just "City of Heroes, but remade without the IP", then... eh, I wouldn't be here. But this is explicitly NOT what City of Titans is.

The idea of making a superhero game in the style of CoH, but learning from its mistakes and its strengths is a much more interesting idea for me. I don't want City of Heroes as such, I want the game City of Heroes could have been if it had used the lessons learned at the end from the start. And that seems like something City of Titans can do.

And finally, it's kind of just blind faith in the team. I mean, a Kickstarter, for an MMO, made by volunteers, and a goal of less than a million? Rationally, this has warning signs everywhere. And yet I'm in, because... I want to believe.

That the community here feels mostly like the old City of Heroes community certainly doesn't hurt either. I can't speak for the other Plan Zs on that, but I know I've been avoiding one of them due to the lack of this.

I just found out about these

I just found out about these projects (CoT, VO, H&V) about a week ago. I am also a very analytical person and even so I can solidly say, after looking at these 3 project there was just some sort of "feeling" that was familiar here to what I remember of CoX. Just a couple of days ago I put up my first post here and not even a day later someone was welcoming me back. So being an analytical, let me make a list:
•Community
•Costume Creator Concepts
•Taking what worked, learning from mistakes, and improving what areas can be
•Environment concepts - can't quite put my finger on it, but something about the environment in CoX I miss. The other projects I looked at didn't seem to portray what I liked as well
•Communication from the development team.

On top of this, I have read through a lot of forum posts and I see the way people interact. I have read many posts on here from people that I would like to get to know. A lot of these people bring up great points in discussion and everyone is respectful. I know these are the people I will be playing the game with, so It makes me want to be a part of the group.

Nothing means anything. This is the natural state of everything within our reality. It is only your existence, your relative position, and your perspective that can make something meaningful.
