We need a Ballroom Fundraiser full of Rich People

and a rotating roster of villains will always show up to rob them.
BUT if you are waiting in your hero ID no one will show. Heroes in Secret ID will trigger an attack.
Better have that instant change emote...

This needs to be a re-playable mission or a regular event. In comics, any gathering of rich people will trigger a super villain and his minions...
Every villain group, even fishmen will attack. Running screaming people...maybe a destructable environment....and of course reporters will be there to record the entire thing.

a reward could be a badge, or a headline you can post in your lair....

alternatively, this could serve as an optional PVP arena where heroes and villains can duke it out.

or it can work for both options...PVE and PVP. Yeah that's the ticket!

I could see it as an event in

I could see it as an event in a path.

It'd especially work if there was a specific path for rich heroes and villains.

One that lets you be more like Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, or Lex Luthor. Where you hero and manage your company.

As a hero you'd look into shady dealings going on involving your company. As a villain you'd be ensuring those shady dealings.

I personally think that games shouldn't just give us stuff for no reason. Like extra costume slots, for instance. Why would we just wake up one morning and have a new costume change slot unlocked?

No. I think anything the game gives us should be the result of accomplishing some content.

As a result, I really like your idea, Cyclops. But rather than the mission just assuming that you have a second costume slot reserved for a secret identity; it should give us a temporary mission power that is a perception filter, hologram projector, magical morphing potion or any other macguffin that in practive gives us a different appearance. For the mission, since it is a mission-temporary power, we won't have a choice what we look like. The mission-giver decides what we look like for us. So for this mission we look like a socialite so we can blend in.

But then when the mission is over, we get to keep the disguise and then we can customize it to look like anything WE want it to be. I'm sure some characters would want to keep it as a secret identity, but other characters might want it for other purposes.

I like this for a number of reasons.

  • This allows all character designs and origins to play the mission, even those who would have no human appearance option otherwise.
  • This gives a free costume slot to all characters, whether they are F2P or not. (or it's a cash shop item that unlocks the mission as a fun way of purchasing the new costume slot)
  • if we run this mission early enough, and make it mandatory, then the rest of the game can be designed with the knowledge that you can disguise yourself as anyone. Thus opening up a stealth branch option for almost every mission as you attempt to disguise and bluff your way past guards and such.

I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

When did I say anything about

When did I say anything about giving a costume slot for free? Or anything for free?

I just said that a fancy party mission would work for a rich character path.

If secret IDs exist I'd just assume everyone gets one automatically upon character creation. Makes sense to me, you get a super outfit and a secret Identity outfit.

I suspect I'm going to be the type of player who's going to try to get as many costume slots for my characters as possible no matter what it'll take to get them (cash shop, level thresholds, specific missions that grant slots as rewards, etc.).

I like the ideas being suggested in this thread but it doesn't really matter to me if we're going to have a "secret ID costume slot" given to us for free at character creation or if we'd have to run a mission like this to unlock one. I'll say that running a mission to get such a costume slot would be interesting, but I'd hardly expect/assume that such a thing should be a "requirement" to get one.

Yeah, I quoted the wrong post. I've fixed it. Resume relaxing.

The best option though would be for this device to be optional so that those people who don't want to make a "secrete identity" don't have to, but those who do have one can make it and use it. Best way to implement that would be the ability to mark costume slots as "secrete identity", and then having the game check for if you are using one and then progress the mission if do use that or a device you got from the mission giver.

You essentially said that assuming that players have a way to disguise themselves was bad but I would say that assuming they can't "disguise" themselves at all would be way worse.

Which would be equally handled by starting everyone off with two costume slots. It's way less common that they don't have separate hero/villain "looks" and civilian "looks".

I take it you mean costume slot there, otherwise it makes no sense. As long as I can buy them outright without the need for a mission to unlock it for actual usage I wouldn't mind that kind of option, assuming there'll be both character and account purchase options (unlock always being character).

I'm not in favor of mandatory missions of any kind here since they have a much higher potential to clash with ones own vision for that specific character. Heck I would even advocate for the tutorial to be optional even for the very first character you make, though having the option to instantly go "back" to it until level 5 or 10 if you didn't do it would be grand.

As for Cyclops' suggestion. Wouldn't mind it and think a regular semi-private (or even public) event would probably be better, especially for the PvP shards.

Woops. yes, you got it right. I'll edit it.

Fair enough. I suppose it wouldn't have to be absolutely mandatory, it would just have to be mandatory if the player wanted that costume slot.

The question of "mandatory missions" is one that I think needs to be taken on a case-by-case basis.

For instance let's say only way to get a specific type of Fancy Wand™ reward would be for you to go through a specific mission where you have to deal with a certain group of wizards and witches who are famous for using those wands. I would not have a problem with that being a "mandatory" mission to get that type of unique reward.

On the other hand it would be relatively weird if the only way you could get a generic reward like an extra costume slot would be to run that specific wizard/witch mission. In that case the generic reward doesn't strictly "match" the unique circumstances. Now that mission might be one of many possible ways to earn an extra costume slot, but it probably shouldn't be the only way to get an extra slot.

Hopefully everyone can understand the key difference I'm pointing out here.

*cocks head to the side* If you mean "mandatory" in the same way that a few specific costume pieces will only be attainable in-game by having "mandatory missions/achievements" to get those specific pieces then I would agree.

As long as there is more than one way to get most of them then it's alright.

It might have already been

It might have already been mentioned, but besides being the hero saving people from / villain pulling off the heist/hostage situation, there's the obligatory version of this that never gets mentioned:

Suddenly, from every entrance to the ballroom, various villain factions- OBVIOUSLY not working in concert- leap out of doorways (or slip off their "waiter/waitress" gear) and announce their heist... they immediately start to bicker with one another over WHO gets the heist.

During the bickering, virtually every NPC in the room says, "umm... be right back" and slips away, superspeeds, or disappears in a puff of smoke, returning in costume. Some will have pieces of tux/ballroom gown still on due to the hastiness of the transformation.

Free for all ensues.

At the end of the battle, the 1 or 2 'normals' left behind comments blankly "where did [x] go? he/she's never here when [hero y] appears.

I think this would make a

I think this would make a good Task Force mission. You talk tot he NPC, they tell you that the ball is likely to be attacked by some villain, so your TF goes there and get's "waiter/waitress" disguises. This puts you in a skin. Then when the attack happens, you all doff your disguises and fight the badguys while trying to protect the NPC hostage, etc.
