EMF Manipulation - EMF or Electromotive force is what tends to cause current (actual electrons and ions) to flow. Manipulating EMF will make a change in voltaic cells, thermoelectric devices, solar cells, electrical generators, transformers, and even Van de Graaff generators, ceasing them or overloading them. Electromotive Force is similar to a magnetic field. In layman's terms; one can use this to manipulate batteries, making them dead or causing them to overload. He does not have control over the Magnetic Field, just a certain electromagnetic force.
-Character's current ability: Can keep small devices powered indefinitely. Can short out larger batteries & power sources with concentration- though distance greatly reduces effectiveness. Mostly subconscious use, takes great concentration to actively use this ability.
Passive Electro-reception Sense
The ability to sense the weak bio-electic fields generated by other beings and locate them
All living beings generate a weak bio-electric field. In a method similar to how some sharks, fish, and even the platypus hunts for food, the possessor of this ability can sense the weak bioelectic field generated by the muscles, nerves, and in some cases, the gills, of other living beings. This sense is generally tuned to low frequency signals. A close-range ability, usually good within a few feet unless the it puts out a powerful bio-electric field. Also may be used to sense non-living things if they emit a EM field. This sense is easily blinded by devices that put out a powerful enough field. Devices that put out electromagnetic fields may disrupt this ability or hide the target
-Character's current ability: Can sense within about 10-15ft with no effort. Character has never attempted further.
Active Electro-reception Sense
In active electrolocation, the user senses their surrounding environment by generating electric fields and detecting distortions in these fields using electroreceptor organs. This allows them to detect non-living objects as well as living beings.
-Character's current ability: Can send out pulses in quick succession to about 25ft out. A larger pulse can be generated that expends much more energy and reaches out to about 80ft.
Bio EM Field
The ability to generate a bio-EM field to wreck havoc with EM powered equipment
The person with this power is able to generate a bio EM field. With this bio-EM field, he or she is able to wreck havoc on EM powered equipment, generate bio-electric energy, and track people using by their bio-electrical pulse. This does not destroy equipment but interferes with its operation. Can be used to disable cameras and detection systems.
The most powerful of users are also capable of channeling their bio-electrical energy into attacks or even drain the bio-electrical energies that may dwell within another being.
-Character's current ability: Can cause static and interference to most technology unless specially shielded. Can easily blackout lights, cameras and surveillance equipment. Most space-tech is sealed and shielded against this type of field. Can specify objects with great concentration, but more often is used as a blanket area attack.
Bio-electric Aura
The power to have and manipulate one's own bio-electric aura. This allows for the user to enhance their physical (strength) and mental (reflexes) using their own stored bio-electricity to stimulate the nerves. The user would be able to jump extraordinary distances due to the increase in strength, or react faster due to the mental amplification. He has a degree of immunity to electrical discharge; in fact, a low amperage charge could theoretically amplify his abilities.
-Character's current ability: Can absorb small amounts of ambient electricity & can resist small-arms fire. Subconsciously used to make longer jumps and enhances strength just outside of human norms. Has seen "super-strength" & super-durability levels after accident but has since been unable to hit those same levels again.
Static Cling
The user of this ability can crawl, walk, and run up walls using static electricity. Some users are only able to scale ferrous platforms. The most powerful form of this is the Van der Waals Force which is electrostatic clinging on a molecular level.
-Character's current ability: Can cling for short periods of time to ferrous materials. Use is generally subconscious to make a saving grab during a run- but if he noticed it he'd have greater control. Hasn't yet noticed this.
Origin:
Colton Makya lived a pretty average life- he played sports growing up, and in college started kickboxing. Afterwards he resigned himself to a typical existence as a Plant Technician at the local HydroElectric Power station. Through his mid-twenties when other people started slowing down and settling - Colton was filled with unbridled energy & a heavy addiction to adrenaline.
He tried his hands at extreme sports, and while fun he found them expensive & wasteful. His Native American heritage still kept his avarice & consumerism in check. He just couldn't justify the environmental impact his endeavors had not to mention the impact it had on his personal savings. Weekly jumps were out of the equation. Then the restless nights started. He'd go to bed at his usual hour and 5hours later he'd be wide awake. At first he used his time on hobbies- but those grew boring.
After a sparring match a friend recommended cross-training with him, and this is where he was introduced to parkour (free-running.)
Making the running leaps and tumbles was thrilling, and every turn was filled with the adventure and adrenaline he so readily craved. Even as a novice he had little trouble keeping up with his more experienced friend. He spent his days at the plant, and his evenings running rooftops- ever pushing himself farther and farther. But at night he slept like a baby. He was pretty content with his life as it was until he stopped eating 3x a day and started eating 2 small snacks everyday. This worried him because he was expending far more energy than he was consuming and he couldn't remember the last time he felt tired... or slept. So he started counting calories. He was right- his fitwatch told him he was expending approximately 1500 calories on just his evening runs. A person his size consumes 2500 calories just to maintain homeostasis. He was only eating 400-600 calories a day, and his stomach never grumbled.
Panicking he called his doctor. They ran through a battery of tests, and nothing stood out. He was in perfect health for a man his age. So he went back home and tried to burn off all this extra energy he felt saturated in. Nothing worked, and even then he was back to sleeping just 5 hours a night.
A few months later- Colton found himself in the middle of a crisis. One of the Francis Generators at the plant had exploded near by. Shrapnel and electricity filled the air. Colton was thrown into the air and flung through the breakroom wall across the plant. He literally pulled himself out of the refrigerator's front side. His only injury was the shock of seeing his body's impression in the door of the refrigerator & the hole he left in the wall 2 stories above the Plant floor. He looked around at the mayhem and gore, and as his eyes fluttered from body to body he finally understood just what happened. Being so close to the center of the blast- there should have been no way for him to survive the initial wave- much less the trip to the breakroom. He was flabbergasted. His mind searched for solutions but found none.
That night he didn't sleep. He ran until dawn, and then ran some more. Even then he felt like he was wired with caffeine. He decided to go to the gym and work the bags. He gave it a couple warm up blows, and as he danced around the bag his mind returned to explosion. He went over it in his mind over and over again- eventually culminating in a sidekick that completely removed the bag from its suspending cable and sent it careening across the gym. In his panic he instinctively reached out to see if anyone was ok- instead his mind was bombarded with an intimate knowledge of the electrical fields making up his surroundings. He sense the nearest living heartbeat stood out in this mass of metal & electrical signals like a distant drum.
Colton had seen enough capes to know what was happening to him- and he hoped that he wasn't mistaken, or worse going crazy. With the plant closed he had little to do while they made repairs and rebuilt. So he did the only suitable thing- he continued running the streets but this time he carried a mask. He used his freerunning to cover huge tracts of the city- and his durability to make drops and leaps others could only stare at in wonder. Weeks had passed since the accident, but it was only after his first night out as Loderunner that he slept soundly.
He tested his new abilities- sometimes accidentally, and found them to be able to stop small arms fire on instinct but even then he was left sore and bruised, and despite his harrowing near miss at the Plant, he was unable to absorb any more electricity than a couple of AA batteries. No more rage fueled strength either. Instead after the effects of the blast wore off, he found himself with a whole new view on life. He could sense the energy inherent in all living beings- bio-electrical impulses traveling their nervous system highways glowed like fireflies underneath peoples skin if he squinted just right, and he could literally feel his cellphone if he lost it. The strangest part- he hadn't charged his cellphone in days and it was still at 100%, and his laptop with the faulty battery too despite keeping it off the charger for the entire day he spent in his apartment. Before the accident the laptop would die in under 8 minutes. He'd find it dead when he returned from a night out as Loderunner, but when he started it back up the batteries were showing charging and then full before he could even open a web browser.
He enjoyed taking out Rooks and the common rabble. He wasn't at all terrible considering his absolute lack of training. Though he was an adrenaline junkie he wasn't a fool. He stuck to the shadows when he could, used height as an advantage, and he 'put in work' against all kinds. But he knew that he could easily be outclassed by many supers running the streets. He thought it best to keep to street level justice, and so he did. He acted like a one man neighborhood watch- if he could take the threat on he'd make the attempt, but if he was outclassed and outgunned- well the authorities were only ever a call away. His freerunning allowed him to stay well out of view but with the right perspective to provide the police the intel they needed to make an arrest.
He returned to work a new man- most thought it was due to his "lucky escape" giving him a new lease on life- which in a way was true. Really he found a whole new purpose in life, and time spent near the generators helped alleviate some of the bruising & lethargy he felt after a night out on the town. He was asked by his boss to help a local shipping vessel properly unload a new generation Francis Generator- not so much do the lifting himself, but to oversee and make sure it was loaded properly in the rig. Colton accepted the assignment and headed towards Iron Port, Titan City a few miles down the shore. It was as he drew near the docks that he felt a powerful burst of energy, that for lack of a better description tasted like a lightning strike. The RF signal was off the charts- but the skies were completely clear overhead, and there wasn't a blast of light to be seen any where. Colton immediately turned his vehicle towards the disturbance. He figured he could go check it out and be to the docks before anyone even noticed he was late.
As he approached the warehouse district he squinted his eyes, and found heartbeats everywhere. He could feel them with a clarity he rarely felt- he assumed all the metal was amplifying the signals so he could feel them out easier. What worried him was the way the hearts were beating. Some icy still as if in preparation for something, others nervous- too nervous for a standard manufacturing center; and far too many for this abandoned district. This area was turning into a pressure cooker fast. He parked his car in reverse and backed it into an alley way. Looking around for bystanders he felt safe enough to pull his mask out from under his seat, and climb the building scaffolding to get a better view. He may be new to this- but there was no mistaking the quick rapid heartbeats of 3 teenagers in the midst of all the others. He hurried in their direction, keeping a low profile. He had no intentions on interfering but he'd be damned if he was going to let 3 kids stand in the middle of whatever this was.
