...we were all playing something else. And loved the hell out of it until they kicked us all out at once.
The holiday season (or for religious folks in America, CHRISTMAS, there I said it. You're right, there's no day called Holiday on the calendar. Now relax.) is a time for reflection. I'm not delving into the "NCSoft shoulda..." train of thought, we've rehashed that countless times. This isn't a "never forget" kind of thread, but just checking in.
What City of Heroes remembrances have happened with you over the last two years? What games have you been playing that made you miss something from our former hometown?
I'll start it off. Last month, at work we had a discussion about a well-ignored piece of our management process, Public Relations (as our school doesn't have a position for it, nor will the state allow us to create such a position, even part time.) I suggested making a Task Force for it, and that brought me back to the good old days. As people raised their hands, I made a PUG at a work meeting. Dear God, what have I done?
Your turn.
Also, don't worry about the significance of Nov. 30th. I know people sign in sporadically, if your reply is two hours from now, or two weeks from now, it's all good.
Just about any mmo's I've played make me miss COH just because COH was alot more fun. There were days I just ran around beating up starting zone baddies just cuz I wanted to clean out the crime.
+1, because it was fun to just be in the game and do stuff, AND because it was fun just to be on the hero or villain (or rogue or vigi) that you created, designed, and developed yourself.
Of those two aforementioned things, there are other games that have provided the second (being able to make your own hero/villain), but I haven't found one yet that has satisfactorily provided the first--just being consistently damn fun to play.
FIGHT EVIL! (or go cause trouble so the Heroes have something to do.)
Post-close thoughts over the last two years?
Biggest is probably Champions, playing a P2P technologists with pets from all trees. With the exception of a block and the gatling gun, all powers were pet. More pets than CoH, not counting Gang War.
And it still felt terrible. I was expected to pew pew things to death (hence the gatling gun) with pets functionally as dots.
Since the AI suffers from "Sim Ant Syndrome" (it makes a beeline for you, end of story) you just block while pets slowly chew the bad guys down.
Stupid. No pet care during fight. Pets uber-wimpy. No strategy. Little customization.
Just a stupid, stupid game. It had some great things (the tutorial invasion followed by the ice station invasion, err, crisis) these were great things that felt immersive.
It was halfway to DCUO's button mashfest -- HOLD BLOCK! You are held, smash any key fast fast fast to break free.
Sigh.

The very existence of the taunting tank irritates, for it requires idiotic AI that obeys the taunt.
Wow, after reading this, I am so thankful I boycotted anything NCSoft after their handling of CoHs closure. That sounds like the worst game mechanics ever made....
On to point though, as I refused to give any NCSoft game my time of day, I'd have to say that I always feel magnetized to the ground on every other game I have played since then. I would say to myself, "Man, I wish I could just click on some travel power right now and blaze through to where I want to go and see some scenery while I'm at it". When I see new games come out with "fast travel", clicking on my destination and being exposed to a loading screen just didnt quite cut it.
I think the biggest thing I have missed though is the super combat mechanics that CoH had. Auto-attack? Really? Boring! I want to blast this enemy to bitty bits, but all I have is this stupid gun that I have to reload after 6 shots? Ugh! Or, Ok this boss is pissing me off, where is my Knockout Punch so I can send this punk flying up, knock him down and beat his head into the ground!
No game has ever even come close to duplicating those feelings for me like my City.

In fairness to NCSoft, afaik they had nothing to do with CO. Cryptic, yes, and first Atari and then Perfect World.

Lol, sorry NCSoft? Just goes to show you how little I cared for the development of a different Super Hero MMO after CoH died....
If there is something out there better than CoH, I would love to try it! Anyone?

Champions Online was released back in 2009... it isn't like its a new game
And it's certainly not better than CoX was. A few mice things (asymmetrical costume pieces), but gameplay-wise it's a bleh.
