Suggestion: Villain Group - The Titan Slayers

Note: Below is a idea of a villain group I just came up with. Much like the ones I've submitted on the VO forums, I'm certainly not expecting the Devs to instantly pick up, but at the very least I hope it inspires the Devs to come up with a group or two and I know that even though at the time of posting the game is in a VERY early stage of development, I'd like to leave this here for the future if Devs are interested in trying to find villain groups to fill in certain level gaps they might have.

The Titan Slayers

Lore:

Originally splintering from a political group who have a growing resentment towards the super-powered vigilantes, this group continues to protest the existence of these super beings, arguing how they create more damage for the tax payers to cover and their presence inspires villains to emerge and cause chaos through-out the city, highlighting recent and past tragedies as the entire result of allowing these 'unstable' and 'unnatural' individuals to be allowed to run free with no repercussions to their decisions.

In the political space they take part in lawsuits aimed at these super beings and push for laws to unmask the vigilantes, reverse the law allowing costumed heroes to arrest citizens, defend citizens arrested by supers (no matter the crime. Even notorious crime-lords), segregation between supers and norms, supers to repay all collateral damage (including injuries, broken weapons and torn clothing) and castration of supers.

However, this group is more well known for their militant stance of forming militia, violently occupying buildings or streets along with stories of this group hunting down and killing supers who have either helped their city or destroyed it, though the heroes are often the more trusting and easier to capture. They have many ex-military members teaching it's newest members with weapon drills and tactical knowledge from anti-terrorist training.

Though the authorities have been trying to arrest any they have leads on, they continue to demonstrate in the street and have even been known to kidnap people to bring into the fold in the more dangerous neighbourhoods.

Minions:

Private Shooter/Slugger: The lowest ranking members of the group, they have trained themselves for combat and attack with basic weapons (brass knuckles, baseball bat, bare-fists, pistol and dagger) and are often used as the front-line grunts or to take place in anti-super protests.

Shock Trooper: The citizens who are kidnapped are often subjected to torture and beatings to create shock troopers to charge in with the plan to over-run the super and let the more experienced soldiers a chance to try and take down the supers. Unlike the followers, there is still hope for them with through deprogramming.

Lieutenants:

Explosives Specialist: Trained in use of plastic explosives they have no issues with hurling explosives at any supers they come across and make sure to set traps up at safe-houses or to sabotage an event. They are also armed with a sub-machine gun to help protect themselves.

Field Medic: Trained in medical triage, the Field Medic uses state-of-the-art medical technology, most likely stolen from military warehouses, to keep their troopers going and using adrenaline shots to bring any fallen member back on their feet .

Marksman: Specialist at ranged combat, the Marksman is equipped with thermal goggles to identify any supers who try to sneak past them. With their modified rifles they fire high-calibre bullets with the intent to either kill supers in one shots or at least weaken them enough for another few shots.

Bosses:

Arms Specialist: As one of the head trainers, the arms specialists inspire his comrades in battle and duel-wields pistols with impressive skills. They are often armed with grenades to assist in combat.

Combat Trainer: These trainers can inspire comrades in battle as they show off their martial arts combat skills and have been trained to take out huge numbers of soldiers.

Possible EBs/Villains:

Chris Jenkins: The head of the law firm that continues it's pursuits of legislation he is often seen as unlikely to be of any real threat in a combat situation, however what people don't know is that he is not human and possesses a great strength and psionics he often used to bend those with weak wills to his way of thinking.

Note: These above name is reference to the old CoH billboard that I had often seen in game sooo many times. Though I have not been very inspired with the groups minions, I quite like the idea of this group of hero haters who hate villains too.

Mind if I use this in the running backstory I've been writing for my characters? It plays into some very relevant themes with where I want to take my story.

I don't see an IP issue. Not stealing the artwork from CoH. Chris Jenkins is a fairly common name and is even gender neutral. The billboard is serving as an inspirational source. If there is a similarly named individual in literature leading a similar group, then you have an IP issue.

Are you allowed to be

Are you allowed to be inspired by an artwork then use that name? Guess I'm on the hypersensitive side of these things.

One thing I'd suggest is change "castration" to "sterilization" because it sounds a little too over the top, especially for the political side of the group.

Castration also only

Castration also only references males AFAIK. Sterilization is a gender neutral act. The political side of the group might be more prone to say something along the lines of "deny/abolish/cancel reproductive rights." Though it's really a moot aspect as not all heroes would pass their powers through standard genetics. Magic and Tech based heroes likely wouldn't get their powers from their parents (though a parent could specifically train a child) Though a less informed/educated or extremist part of the group might use sterilization as a talking point.

This is not my favorite villain group type/style. I get the motivation and thinking that would spawn such a group but I'd prefer a world setting that puts heroes in hero boots and lets them be heroes for everyone without a faction of dissent. I don't want to log in to be a hero and find myself in the middle of a group of civilians that are out to get me. That's part of my escapism and why I play.

I interpreted "castration of supers" as removal of their powers, if that's to mean literal--...yeah that's a bit much.

I on the other hand,

I on the other hand, immediately went for the literal interpretation and if you didn't mean it that way, then I'm sorry. XD;

This kind of thing seems pretty Marvel to be honest, I don't actually think there's anything wrong with it per say. I do have to say that the whole thing with Topaz in the lore update probably would've given them a lot of fuel.

My understanding is it depends on the context of things. Again this is a VERY rough idea for the devs that I freely offer (haveing already signed the thing saying I forfeit any ownership of ideas, blah, blah, blah, legal, blah) so many things can be changed, but my understanding is there shouldn't be an IP issue as this is simply a reference to the poster.

I wouldn't say I know ALL the law of the City of Heroes universe, certainly not as City of Villains was the jumping on point for me and I bought Heroes later, but as far as I know Chris Jenkins was never a super villain who lead a extremeist group against any super-powered beings whilst being an alien himself.

If I were making a MMO and simply stole the billboard (basically looking EXACTLY the same but in a different art style) then I could see a problem with it. Plus the name is pretty generic and is certianly nothing as unique from the IP as "Statesman, Lord Recluse, Ghost Widow, Back Alley Brawler" etc. There are other examples where people borrow from other movies where IP isn't an issue like Return of the Jedi three minor characters were named "Klaatu, Barada, Nicto" which was a term used in "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and in games Witcher 2 had the opening scene where as Geralt, you see a dead assassin (dressed much like the Assassins from Ubisoft's AC series) and he comments "Guess they'll never learn."

Either way, this is just a base idea for a villain group so I can understand things being changed.

I admit one of the downsides of any of my creative writing is that I do sometimes get a bit...dark.

To be fair City of Heroes had elements of darkness in some of their story missions or even in one-off missions at times, though more-so on the villain side I felt like assisting the owner of the poor house in Grandville where the guy is clearly a sociopath that cares nothing for the poor and even attempts to give away two kids to Arachnose because they demonstraited some psionic abilities.

On a side-note, I do love how active the community is here on the CoT forums where as the VO forums are quite dead in comparison (Though FB is very active).

As a compareson, here are the villain group ideas I uploaded on there months ago:

The Ophidions/Knights of St. Cuthbert

The Reanimators

May upload more ideas, but those ones above are for VO unless (touch wood) something goes wrong with the project which would be a real shame.
