I'm in Fairfield county CT, so let's find a non-NYCC time and whoever can make it, does. The nature of this will always be that more people can't make than can make it, but to get a little Voltaire here, let's not make the perfect the enemy of the good.
Thanks for making the good faith effort Warcabbit. Although I wasn't able to make it down, I know a lot of us out here in the Interwebs appreciate it.
Next year, perhaps.
Meantime, please do continue to keep us posted on how we can best support you and the rest of the MWM team going forward.

Man, that's hilarious. I'm glad that I mentioned it then.
Give me some dates and I'll be happy to run down to Florida for a meetup in March. I will probably be incorporating it into a longer stay at a nice hotel away from family and work. Recommendations welcome. Preferably something that makes a good mudslide or pink colored drinks that make me not walk good.

Let's talk in January or something.
I mean, I kinda want to do a Disney meetup just because Disney is awesome and I haven't been to Disney World since Epcot was under construction.
Or we could do Universal Studios Florida and see if any of the stuff I did for the Barney exhibit still exists.

*tapping foot impatiently* OK, so where's this so-called "trip report? ;)
Obviously no non-MWM person would be under any obligation to "report" anything but this post is really more a generic appeal to MWM for further info or at least a screenshot or two. If the Avatar Builder was "finished enough" to let random public people at NYCC see it in action last weekend then clearly it must be "finished enough" that you could at least post a few screenshots here right? Tell me why that doesn't make sense...

DMV
DC sits squished in between north VA and south Maryland, and due to urban growth and sprawl those areas of both those states blend into DC proper.
To be fair much of the east coast is kind of one big urban and suburban stretch.
As a native Marylander, I have to say this is the first time I've heard DMV used to refer to anything other than the Department of Motor Vehicles. I'm used to 'DelMarVa' for the three states and 'DC Metro Area' for DC-MD-VA.
Maybe it's a new term that has come into use since I left?
Spurn all ye kindle.
DMV has been in use for a while, but it is mostly used by those that live outside DC and work in it. That is a lot of people though.
If you don't go into DC you probably don't hear the term since you don't care much about stuff that impacts those people. It is often used when talking about issues that would affect commuters (issues with subways, roads, trains) since there is close to a 100% overlap between the groups of "people that live outside of DC but go there a lot" and commuting workers to DC.
People with longer commutes may not hear the term much either since they would potentially be less impacted by more local concerns. It is rare but not unheard of for people to commute all the way from southern or even West Virginia to DC, from the more northern areas of Maryland, or even take puddlejumper flights from Boston and NYC.
e: It is possible that is also relatively new since you left the area. I think it began to gain popularity a decade or so ago? Perhaps two?
The term is also used frequently in advertising in the area with boasts like "the best (insert thing here) in the DMV!".
Yeah I've only ever heard of the "DelMarVa" abbreviation for the general area but then again the closest I've ever lived to DC is Florida from the south and Connecticut from the north so obviously I wouldn't consider myself a "local" to the area.
It almost seems like people might have shortened the old DelMarVa to "DMV" specifically for the DC area as a sort of joke for the hellish traffic there. At least I've always heard the traffic was bad there and it would make the "punny" reference to the universally hated Department of Motor Vehicles appropriate.

The D is for district. Delaware isn't very close to DC.
Yeah, the traffic is awful. I remember living in the area about five years ago with a roommate who was following a band around on tour. They gave me a call to complain that they knew they were back in the DC area because they were parked in traffic at 3am.
Part of the issue is the general culture of the area with everyone living outside the city and commuting into it. Another big part is the lack of transportation infrastructure and the age / lack of support of the infrastructure that exists.
I actually remember enough of my 3rd grade geography to be aware that Delware is not that close to DC. I'm simply pointing out the likely relationship to the old "DelMarVa" abbreviation and where the "DMV" might have evolved from.
Also strictly speaking if the "D" was for "District" then the proper "geographical order" of that acronym would be "VDM" (Virginia west, DC center, Maryland east) but since "VDM" doesn't make for as good of a double entendre "joke" as "DMV" I'm going to stand with my reasoning of it for the time being.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".
i guess the CC still have only 9 colors ? the colors and the shoulders doesn't fit well with the set to my opinion, but that's really amazing how the breath is done here ! The aura remind me a storm (even if i probably make a mistake ^^). I'm really impatient to have access to Issue #0 by participating to the Second Chance !

The breathing looks kind of weird, as if the chest isn't animated and the character is trying to breath with their arms/shoulders. Like they don't have lungs but are pretending to be human.
I like the look and the way the costume parts and auras work together!
The chest is rising but the animation is lagging making it look like the shoulders are pulling the chest up.
Titans that's actually a really good point that we have seen very little variety in colors with most of their Instagram costume posts.

They are probably just using high-contrast primary colours to show off clearly where the parts can be coloured separately.
Yeah that's a pretty good presumption!
It would be nice to get some official confirmation at some point. Though part of me really feels that with all of the team in "Crunch Time" as Tiger put it, that they would probably not send out the creator to a very large group of people with only 9 or so colors.
This isn't 1992. We'll have plenty of color options. I would expect that color is probably the simplest part of the chargen to implement, as in the think least likely to break anything else. (As compared to 3D modelling, textures, clipping, skeletons, hair, sliders, male/female forms, etc etc etc.)
Hey man, the devs have actually said we'll likely only have around the same amount of color options as City of Heroes did, but I don't expect you to have known that since like many things it was a series of small posts by devs buried in a thread somewhere around here.
They essentially said they want to have more, but can basically promise just as much as Co* and the reasoning behind it was something along the lines of how much information needs to be pulled from the server at one time, so they opted out of like a million options.
They've also shown parts of the character creator with only about 9 options available, which is why the poster TitansCity referenced that number -- he's calling back to some things that actual developers of CoT have said.
I remember something to that effect being said at some point long ago. And? CoH had way more than 9 colors.
If MWM were to release their Chargen to "show off" what they've accomplished after 4-5 years of development with Unreal's state-of-the-art graphics engine, and they only have 9 colors available, they'd be laughed off the internet, and rightly so.
Not gonna happen. Just not gonna happen, unless it's an April Fool's joke, and we're much closer to Halloween.
What data structure would they have to use to justify that sort of limitation, anyway? even 8 bits gets you 256 values.
It seems reasonable to expect that we won't have a full range palette of a million color shades, but the range of colors we had in CoH -- a game that came out over a decade ago -- has to be a low-ball minimum. This isn't going to be "The Bard's Tale" on the Commodore 64.
I think you've missed the point where I am in agreement with you. I'm just stating the limitation that they pointed out before, and wonder the same thing as TitansCity about the lack of colors they've shared on their social media platforms.
My real question is, in depth : Does CC have more than 9 colors as it have when we saw it during the beta (and in the video of presentation) or does those "Make anyone" pictures have basic colours so as to help colorblind people like in the CoT team ? (i really don't know well the colour deficiency :/ maybe there is no relation between those colors and colorblind people xD Even if i don't see the green colour ;) )
NB : by the way, how will CoT handle the colours for colorblind people ? will they have a "special" colour grid to choose as an option depending on what colour the don't see ?

I recall when the topic of "colors" came up not too long ago here last time. It was (IIRC) maybe 6-12 months ago give or take.
Anyway while the Devs definitely confirmed there will be a color palette limit in CoT (as there was in CoH) they also implied that we will be getting more options than CoH provided.
Based on the Titan Network info we had 160 costume color options and 70 skin color options in CoH:

Basically what the Devs here alluded to was that we would get something more like 256 costume color options in CoT. So while it's still not "millions of colors" it should be a significant increase over what CoH allowed for.

I believe it was during a Twitch Stream, where the dev was responding to comments in chat, that they said that we'd have 256 colors upon launch. More than that wouldn't be feasible for reasons I don't recall, but 256 colors should still give us a pretty broad spectrum of colors with which to design our characters, especially given that we'll be able to mix and match colors and patterns even within the same costume element.

Frankly I'll be happy enough if we get what CoH allowed for costumes PLUS a good range of browns/tans/beiges.
If you'll notice from the two color palette pics I linked to in my last post it was clear that the CoH Devs did their best to reduce the chances of people creating supposedly "simulated nude" characters (i.e. wearing skin-colored speedos) by essentially nerfing any vaguely human "skin tone" colors from the costume color palette. This color nerfing literally happened a few weeks after CoH launched and remained that way until the end of the game.
Of course the downside of preventing "simulated nude" characters was that we were also prevented from having any kind of "brown" as a legitimate costume color. Hopefully we've grown up a bit since 2004 and this won't really be "the problem" it was supposedly expected to be at the time.

Ahhh yes! Thank you!
256 does sound right, and I believe you are correct that it was Avel saying that during a stream (IIRC).
Here are a couple examples of the options 256 might us:

I also seem to have a memory of Avel being able to open up a color and it had many options inside of it of adding or removing lightness/brightness. No clue if that's still the case.
Yes there was also some mention of having something like an additional "1 through 10 brightness slider control" for each color you pick so we could effectively have perhaps something like 256 x 10 = 2,560 color choices. Like you said I don't know if that'll end up being in the actual game but I do now recall (based on your post here) that it was something one of the Devs was talking about as a possible way to "trick" the game into giving us as many color choices as possible.
To be honest it would probably be hard with say 50 shades of red to tell the difference between the 37th and 38th shade when it's on a character's costume running around on our screens but this would seem like a decent compromise between what CoH offered and "millions of colors".
CoH player from April 25, 2004 to November 30, 2012

Yeah I agree. Hopefully they can still pull that off!
I believe they also said we might have control over the shade/tone of the colours as well, which could exponentially expand our options.
Yeah, I think I'm partially to blame here. Little Grade 11 me thought it would be fine to let a friend try the game out while I quickly went and helped my parents out with stuff. I came back downstairs to see said friend had made a racially insensitive and very inappropriate character. He was laughing his ass off but I made him delete it immediately, still got a warning flagged on the account. While I'm still friends with the guy (and he has thankfully grown in that matter), to this day he's still not allowed to try games out on my accounts.
For someone so well-versed in it, you sure don't pick up on it very well.

Well like they say sarcasm typically doesn't translate well in written venues like this without the normal verbal cues to convey it. I suppose your "attempt" here was no exception to that basic rule of thumb. *shrugs*
P.S. In case you wanted me to be a bit more plain spoken (and consequentially less diplomatic) about what I meant when I said "Hopefully we've grown up a bit since 2004" I was directly criticizing the Devs of games in general and their silly attempts to prevent "Ken and Barbie doll" style nudity by enacting arbitrarily stupid prohibitions against "innocent things" like a group of skin tone colors for costume items. Was that a little more direct for you?

Plenty of people got "punished" by the GMs throughout the long history of CoH for all sorts of reasons whether it was justified or not. Unless the incident you're referring to here happened literally during the first week or so after CoH's launch (the "skin tone color" nerfing I mentioned happened in a hot fix maybe two weeks after CoH launch) then I wouldn't assume you directly need to be "blamed" for anything. ;)
Although you were negatively affected by what your friend did on your account I'm actually glad that game (and hopefully this game) were "policed" for that sort of thing.

I forget exactly how early it was, I did pick up the game on launch week by chance, just visiting the local computer store after school and saw the box. I was pretty excited to show friends once I had tried it a bit, could have been that following weekend, could have been month later.
Eh, again I wouldn't assume you were the "one shining example" to prompt that entire round of nerfage.
To be fair that nerfing incident was always more famously referred to as the "great nipple nerf" because they also modified the female body model to make the "areas where their nipples would have been" a bit less "prominent". To be clear they were never designed with actual nipples on-purpose - it was just by chance the way the CoH female body model was originally constructed left them with fairly noticeable (yet unintended) "bumps" when you used certain costume items and/or color combinations. So while they nerfed the nips they also nerfed the skin tone costume colors.
Interestingly enough I don't think I even heard which of those two nerfings the Devs of CoH felt was more important/critical. Maybe at the time they decided that both of them were equally necessary to preserve the "common good" or some-such drivel. ;)

I honestly don't see why they can't toss out at least a few recent screen shots of the costume creator at this point. As Weylor said surely they can show us as much now as they were willing to show publicly at the NYCC. Are they seriously afraid of someone stealing their precious GUI technology lol. ;)

I think the main difference is that posting it here makes it official while the "demo" at NYCC was unofficial. While I do wish they would show everything that was shown there I understand that anything shown now in an official capacity would benefit from having a minimum standard to it.
That's splitting a hair might fine. Even if there was some difference between "official" and "unofficial" as far as MWM is concerned that shouldn't really be stopping them from posting a few screenshots that conform to whatever "minimum standard" that makes them happy at this point.
CoH player from April 25, 2004 to November 30, 2012

Why would the demo be unofficial? It was at a con, right before Issue 0...if anything I'd say that is more official than on a forum.
Where it was shown of doesn't matter as much as the official capacity of the person showing it of. By that I mean it depends on if 'cabbit was there as a private person or as an MWM employee. Even if one has the blessing of the company they may still talk and show things that are not official (yet) by the company.
This forum, or rather the news section of this site, is an official place for news and updates.
Don't you think that the MWM employees have likely placed themselves under NDAs and/or at the very least would not "just show off" game material of any kind in an "unofficial" capacity without getting in trouble?
If warcabbit had simply just shown up at the NYCC unannounced and showed people the CC then I might consider that an "unofficial" demo. But the fact that warcabbit made this thread and advertised his attendance at the NYCC with his laptop loaded with the CC pretty much makes that "official" by default. We saw no other Devs trying to stop warcabbit or try to claim this was an unsanctioned action by warcabbit so as Weylor implied that pretty much makes it as "official" as it could get.
Just saying... ;)

It kind of defeats the purpose of a "user review" for the Dev involved to write the review himself. Not that I would hate any additional info you might wish to release but it just seems weird/sad for you to have to write something like that yourself. I might be the only one but I hope next weeks update is a 'big' update and not about the chargen. Here is my reasoning, per Shadow Elusive the chargen UI still isn't ready so we won't be seeing the actual chargen. We've already had multiple week's updates be just screen shots of social media posts of characters, as well as a bunch of pictures on the 'Project Update', so I feel like pictures of characters made in the chargen wouldn't be anything new...and it looks like the post after the upcoming one will be more screenshots anyway, per warcabbit. Yes the pictures are awesome but I am also curious about the rest of the 'game' that we haven't heard anything about in a while, at least not in a dedicated update. So I hope it's some sort of gameplay footage or about the map, preferably with pictures, or missions or something.

That said, if anyone's in NYC and wants to do a meetup over a drink - would love to get together and chat about the game, past games, games in general, and sundry other topics.
Also - it's DMV rather than DelMarVa now in much the same way it's San Fran or SF vs Frisco of yore. However, given the state of the infrastructure, DMV seems remarkably accurate as an appellation =)
I understand that Emperor Norton disapproved of the term "Frisco".

NYCC was just an excuse for a known location and date. I'mma calling you out, all you Titaneers! (I am not allowed to use that term. I'M USING IT.)
Pick a weekend and an enclosed place with a power outlet in the City and I will _meet you there_.
How's next weekend? Anyone? Some coffee shop somewhere?
And as a bonus, we'll work your reviews into that update I was going to do.
Oogly? Lothic?

It's mighty tempting but in a couple of weeks I'm likely going to be heading overseas until early next year. My job has me travel like that 4 or 5 months per year and my time just happens to be up for me to head out again soon. NYCC was probably my last best near-term chance for something like that if I had had maybe an extra few days to juggle my schedule for it. Oh well, I'm hoping by the time I'm back you will have released Issue 0 for all the backers to see. :)

Wanna fly to Toronto mid-week? I can get you a good rate on a hotel an hour out of the city! :P
I guarantee you no one from San Francisco ever calls it 'frisco'. San Fran maybe, SF more likely, or probably just the specific district in question.

I'm down! is there a convenient spot in the city? I live right on the edge of hells kitchen and chelsea just by the ACE lines so it's super easy to get around. would prefer manhattan to the other boroughs because weekend public transportation travel is terrible.
happy to do this thursday (25th) pm as well!
Early Novemeber NJ has its teachers conventions, which I'm planning on skipping out on this year, so I might be free.
Ugh. The weekend looks like utter crap. Might snow. Got to work late on Thursday too. I'm on the E or F mostly, so pick a location. E, you say? Where's a good starbucks?

I "hear" you are coming up to Calgary, Alberta Warcabbit.
I will meet you at any Starbucks of your choice to see what's in the way.
Hi. I'm Hope.
