This just reminds me, I was

This just reminds me, I was watching a documentary a couple of days ago about the Transformers toy line. It was a good program, it started as far back as the end of WWII when Japan was turning recycled tuna cans into toy robots, which then led over time to making transforming toy robots, which then were ported to the US by way of Hasbro to make the Transformers.

Anyway they went through the story step by step and got to the part where they had a bunch of characters designed, prototypes complete, manufacturing done, all in place to launch. Then about 6 months before they were ready, Tonka releases the Go-Bots.

Hasbro thought that was a disaster because now they have to enter the market with a product that could be seen as a “knock-off” of an already-established, very similar product. Well I’m sure you know the rest. The Go-Bots, while having a head start and being much cheaper, were very simple toys and were tied into a badly-made cartoon with silly characters and light storylines that had no depth to them.

While starting later, and being much more expensive, the Transformers were fairly complex, almost like small puzzles to transform. The cartoon and comic book adaptations had storylines that were engaging and characters with real personality. It wasn’t long before Go-Bots were practically forgotten and the Transformers have enjoyed decades of success, and remain popular today.

My point isn’t that this is a competition that MWM will win. It doesn’t have to be, superhero MMOs can and do coexist just fine. It’s not even that CoT will be a superior product to SoH (though CoT definitely appeals to me much more). My point is that you don’t have to be the first to release to be a success. Not even in an industry where you’re clearly competing head-to-head for a limited customer base as the 80s toy business was. You just need to have a good product. I think MWM has a really good one.

Then there's the opposite

Then there's the opposite story of Beta vs. VHS. Beta was the better product, produced by Sony, and came first. But JVC made the VHS and despite being the inferior product and coming to the scene later, it won the video format wars anyway. Primarily the advantage lay in VHS playing machines being cheaper than Betamax machines. Recording time was also a factor. Neither the difference in quality nor market lead was seen by consumers to make up for the price or the running time.
So sometimes quality needs only be good enough to be acceptable if the market determines that other factors are more important.

In MMO, these other factors could be some things like: immersion, story, gameplay mechanics, amount of content, and content refresh rate.

All this assumes the market can/will only support a single offering in the long term. Tranfsormers and Go-Bots survived side by side on the shelves for a while and so did VHS and Betamax.. What's the half-life of an MMO these days? And is it shorter than the ability of the market to support more than one superhero MMORPG?
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

The 80s Transformers cartoon had a lot of silly light storylines too.

It did eventually get some good episodes like The Girl Who Loved Powerglide and the greatest episode of the original series Dark Awakening.

Though I will admit that I have never seen the go-bots show so it could be so much worse by a tremendous degree.

It is. Here’s a small clip.

Terrible voice acting (many character voices themselves were also annoying), crude animation, everyone just shot blasts of energy out of their hands because the toys didn’t come with weapon accessories, etc. It was a generic bad 80s cartoon.

Thread wasnt really for throwing Salt.
The game was totally off my radar so it caught me by surprise. More successful MMOs is not a bad thing.

I agree. Actually, it would be much better for CoT if SoH does well than if it fails.

If people think CoT is similar to SoH when it’s released, it would be better if people think SoH is good than if SoH sucks.

Competition between the games is good, it makes it so both dev teams have to improve their games instead of growing lax when their game dominates the genre.

My only issue is the fans of both games will likely get very toxic which isn't really how I would like games in CoH's honor to be like....

Not to sound funny but it helped that the porn industry basically "voted" for VHS despite Betamax's advantages. That factor is usually (at least informally) considered to be the actual "deciding factor" market-wise between the two formats.

I'll let the reader decide if that fact means anything in terms of CoT's relationship to the other successor projects. ;)

So the key to CoT success is getting it featured on Pornhub? :p

Well I would never literally imply/suggest that the folks at MWM take my following idea on this seriously but if we lived in some kind of fictional Bizarro universe where people in general would not mind CoT being openly related/linked to Pornhub then, yes, if CoT could be made the "Official superhero MMO of Pornhub" this game would be instantly set for life. Just saying...

I think you have your threads crossed - the question of "in-game product placement" was being discussed over in this thread.

And don't worry... for what it's worth as a "T for Teen" rated game I seriously doubt MWM would ever consider adopting the classic advertising mantra of "Sex Sells" into CoT's marketing campaign, at least not overtly at any rate. ;)

They will be launching with

They will be launching with smaller version of the game, which is not a bad thing. They didn't do a Kickstarter so they will be using the revenue to add to the game. However, at launch, they will only have one level of the ship and a character level cap of 20 I believe. No villains at launch. Still if it looks great and is fun, they can bring people in and who knows how close the future zone updates will be?

I know, my point is that the subject is current on this board. Just not this thread, at least until now.

Maybe call it “Titan Nights”. With a logo resembling neon lights and some saxophone music in the background.

I try and keep up with SoH as well as CoT but honestly its only a few things that keep me from really being excited about this game. The setting seems very limiting, no aesthetic decoupling...this is really the biggest one for me, and the amount of content compared to CoT when CoT has been working on content for years longer than SoH. I know I only 'officially' made a login on here a few months ago but I've been following CoT and reading the forums and updates for years and aesthetic decoupling has me hooked. I don't want to be forced to be an Ice Blaster or a Fire Blaster, I want to be able to choose what my abilities look like. I imagine it would feel so confining now. I know it didn't feel like that in CoH in the beginning but with today's tech....CoT is really the only way to go for me. Now, if SoH releases the full game before CoT I might try it out for a month or two...but CoT is where I WILL be.

Compulsively clicking the refresh button until the next update.

I will play but it seems

I will play but it seems watered down. From what I hear they will have practically nothing appealing to me available at launch because they are in a NASCAR race with someone to get their product out first. That rushing stuff never works, GL to them though. I will support them.

My theory is they need the money bad so will sacrifice quality for more money.

As a child, I thought my name was handsome, cause that is what everyone called me.

I’ll be honest. If it’s better than DCUO or CO and comes out before CoT, I might play it.

But I might not play much, or at all, once CoT launches.

I genuinely tried to like CO

I genuinely tried to like CO and DCUO but they were much too like standard MMOs comparably to CoH.

And their communities were god awful in comparison.
