It was not a good weekend for the City of Titans team. Our repository server stopped working because of a manufacturing defect. It is the computer that controls the hard drives that store the entire game. We're getting a replacement motherboard, but the timing is quite poor.
As a result, we are delaying the already-delayed update even further. We are also in the middle of integrating and finalizing other parts of the game, such as the Avatar Builder. That is looking amazing, by the way! But what makes the timing extra painful is that we were just days away from installing a redundant backup server in case this one failed. As Maxwell Smart used to say "missed it by that much"
But as bad as this sounds, and we know how bad this sounds, it is just a minor hiccup in the bigger picture. And that is the important point. We lost no data. All we lost was a bit of time. As I mentioned, the Avatar Builder and the rest of the game integration is coming along like gangbusters. We are going to have some great stuff to show you. But most of all, we still think we're going to deliver the first issue of the game this year, as we said we would.
So I've created this thread to openly communicate the details with you, our backers, our fans.

Well, that sucks to hear, but as long as nothing was permanently lost, we can accept a good reason for an update delay, and this most certainly qualifies. And this, kids, is why you back up EVERYTHING.
An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".
I'm really hoping that this update has something to do with actually getting my hands on something and not just more pictures/animation of stuff with how much hype it's got at this point.
Puny Heroes.
It was fun trying to diagnose and reset the server Saturday. It's been in my basement for more than a year (I have Google Fiber) because that was the only place where there was a grounded outlet and where the Google Fiber box lived. I had to use two CAT5e cables as well and they weren't long enough to run to my bedroom/office through the hole I drilled in the floor just for my networking. The net result was a the tower (Mini ATX) had some bugs around it - common enough as servers are typically just put in a closet somewhere and not attended unless there are issues. I've got longer fiber now and a UPS/surge protector in my room as well. Once this thing is fixed no more bugs. I actually went into the case and cleaned it of, literal, bugs just in case that was the issue. We have backups of every critical part of course.

Senior Developer/Project Manager/Co-Founder... and then some.
My personal standard for the extremely important documents (such as the engine license agreement) involves three digital backups to different local drives, a cloud back-up, and two hard copies, one of which is kept in a locked fire-proof safe. Even then, the only one I actually trust is the one in the safe - because if we have another Carrington event, the digital records'll be gone, and the loose hard copy might be mistakenly burned for fuel. This may be a little on the extreme side of things, but when you're dealing with legal documents, you don't want to leave a breach in the chain.
It is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community.
Business Director
Well, when we release it will be going first to our selected Alpha testers who've already signed their NDA. The first iteration of the game will only have the avatar builder and basic chat functionality. After testing everyone will get their hands on it. We want to play too but we have to dot the "I"s and cross the "T"s.

Senior Developer/Project Manager/Co-Founder... and then some.
I am relieved to hear that no data was lost.
I work as an independent creative, and whenever I'm deep into a project, I live in (limited, but measurable) terror of losing everything I've done to some freak disaster.
So yeah, I totally appreciate the redundant backup measures MWM seems to be taking with things.
Still sucks that the server went awol, though.
Technically, even if the repository had caught on fire and was lost, it is possible to recreate it from the various people who use it as well as archival backups we do on the less used repositories.
We did that once as a test, worked fine.
What we've _lost_ right now is the ability to easily collaborate on large files - any one dev can do their thing, but you can't check the changes in and have another dev pull them.
This means that what we've actually lost is the ability to easily collaborate.
In short, this did the most damage to the update, specifically, and relatively little to the game itself, devs are mostly working on things they can still work on - some projects just got re prioritized a little, and some elements are now being shared via google drive or email rather than the repository.
And check out the Instagram - we're putting some stuff in it since we can't do the full shiny thing. There's some skin choices - including a paneled skin I know a few of you asked for - and the chest of our power armor.

Sorry to hear about the death of the server but good to hear you've taken adequate steps to recover from it. The sad people who manage to survive in the far dystopian future where the malevolent uber-AI (initially based on MWM's code for CoT) has enslaved the entire world will find it ironic to learn that they were almost spared their living nightmare by a single MB failure back in 2018. ;)
It's funny but when I first read your phrase "paneled skin" I didn't immediately visualize what that could be.
But when I saw the pic (at https://www.instagram.com/p/BnKGQgdnRGy/?taken-by=missingworldsmedia) I realized that was indeed one of the many suggestions from the Costume Suggestion thread. Basically I had never used your "paneled skin" phrase in relation to this before but in retrospect it does make sense. I'm assuming/hoping that pattern will basically be a "full body" option for both male and female body models.
Thanks for including a version of it in the game. :)

Well. It MATCHES a selection from the suggestion thread, but, uh.
We'd already done it by then.
The thread is why we took a picture of it, though. It's really nifty when we-all think alike, isn't it?

Wait, wait, wait!
You mean somebody actually beat Lothic to the punch?
(whistles in awe)
Well obviously I had no idea when the MWM Devs implemented it versus when it was first suggested on any forum. This "paneled skin" idea was one of those old ones suggested as far back as the original CoH forums and has been "re-suggested" for years multiple times by multiple people, including me.
But I have no problem thanking the Devs here and now for "adding" it to the game even if that's somehow "retroactive" at this point. ;)

For fans like me constantly checking the website for something new...this is terrible news, but at least it's not so bad in the long run for the game.
Since we won't be getting anything for a while, might I suggest the manpower that would be used on the update be used to update the website instead? IMO, being as far along as CoT is...the website is a bit lackluster. Yes, I know, it's bottom of the priority list for the team right now...but it's getting to the point where CoT needs to be hooking new website visitors. An example would be how SoH has an actual screenshot of their city as their website background, it's cool seeing the 'game', despite not being at its 100% polished stage. We also got an Apkallu update but they don't have a Cape Chaser page. And for the current Cape Chaser pages that don't have any pics, maybe add one or two. This leads to the suggestion for a 'media' section which, really, should have been where all the past pictures and videos were uploaded to. This probably won't happen but I thought I'd throw it out anyway as a suggestion.

When the game is live, is there a plan to avoid critical failure points like this? E.g. hopefully enough people buying the game that you can afford to have hot-swappable copies of all server h/w?

Yes, and we were two weeks away maybe from having one now.

Thanks, that's good to hear. I anticipate one of MWM's biggest remaining challenges to be the transition to a live environment supporting thousands of users. Nice to know you have a plan. :-)

Yeah sadly stuff like this happens to people regardless if they are small start-ups like MWM or even big multi-million dollar government programs.
Case in point about a decade ago we were working on a systems upgrade for a unique ship-based Air Force radar system. The group that directly developed the upgrades made the short-sighted mistake of delivering a majority of the critical engineering testing documentation and software analysis/grooming tools on a single ClearCase server that decided to fail almost the instant it was "officially" handed over to us. We actually had been planning to redundantly clone that server once we took possession but like in MWM's case we missed that chance by a few weeks give or take.
While we still had most of the information/code backed up or otherwise available to us via various secondary sources it was a monumental pain to have to effectively "recreate" the entire multi-year repository of development data that single server represented. There were still times even years later when some engineer needed to access X, Y or Z about that system and the first misguided answer from the original contractor would be like, "Well, we delivered that on the ClearCase server. Why didn't you check there first?" without the person realizing that the server in question had been toast for years.
Moral of the story: S*** happens regardless. ;)

We actually have a secondary system. Properly we have two. One we'd shut down in order to set up the other, and it was just bad timing that this failure occured in the middle of that transition.

Well they are after all talking about a development string as opposed to the assumed highly redundant/concurrent "server farm" that would actually be running the live game for players. It's not like they are going to be trying to host the game for all players on "one" single-point-of-failure server. ;)

While I might applaud your extreme dedication to "backing things up" one might easily argue that if we were to have a repeat of something on the order of the Carrington event in today's electronically inter-connected society we might not really have to worry much about things like "software engine license agreements" in the aftermath.
Instead we'd likely be more worried about running away from the Mad-Max styled cannibals trying to eat us to stay alive in what would likely become a very post-apocalyptic dystopian nightmare. No point to playing something like a survival sandbox "game" when we could be living that IRL. ;)

When things look bleak, keep going. When things look peachy, keep going. When things look absolutely hopeless, keep going. When everything falls into place perfectly, keep going. And most especially, when you finally get to the point that you want to just stop, keep going.
PS- And if a Carrington event happens and Lothic is right about the result--TOO BAD! You're still not off the hook :P!

Business Director
Well that's definitely a "doozy" in terms of worst-case scenarios. I'm just pointing out that our collective priorities would likely be quite a bit different if we ever got to the point where the -only- copy of that license of yours you have left is the one in the fire-proof safe. Sadly I don't think playing CoT would be among them.
It's like when I laugh at those people who "invest in precious metals" as a hedge for when all the world governments collapse. If things ever got bad enough that fiat currency (i.e. the stuff you currently have in your wallets/purses) became worthless no one's going to care about your gold/silver coins either. At that point the only thing that's going to be worth anything are bullets and clean water. ;)
CoH player from April 25, 2004 to November 30, 2012

Considering everything else I have in the fireproof safe which isn't related to CoT or MWM in the first place, my logic is a little more reasonable. The area of Canada I'm in is one where in such a circumstance, the only reason I'd have a need for bullets is for hunting - and even then, I've still got a preference for the crossbow. Basically, my point is that the legal documents related to everything we're doing as MWM are given equal protection.
Besides, I have little reason to believe an apocalypse is sufficient to stop certain parties from pursuing lawsuits if they're in a certain mood. :)
It is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community.

Eh, for what it's worth I'd rather MWM be "too cautious" with stuff like license agreements than "not cautious enough" so I'm not really against the fire-proof safe.
As far as the need for bullets go there are plenty of studies that suggest that most western style "first world" countries are surprisingly only maybe 72 hours away from pure chaos if the entire power grid was shutdown effectively everywhere. Forget hunting - bullets would be needed to "placate" your fellow former neighbors Fallout-style. I suspect NCsoft might be a bit too busy to bother with MWM at that point...
I've lived through enough hurricanes (in Florida) to know how crazy the average populace gets even when certain limited areas of one state goes several days without power. If that happened across most of the planet at the same time it might be more or less game over for what we're currently calling "modern society".

36 hours, by my math, influenced by a number of variables. But you're correct, evidence largely confirms that what we call civilization is just a polite fiction that remains stable only so long as no one pokes too many holes in the curtains. Which is why it's so fun to play villains.

I spent 3 years working in a data center in California that housed everything from local businessmen and city services to federal and international organizations. If there was one thing I learned in those years, it was that COMPUTERS BREAK DOWN (and do so at the worst possible moment). (I swear, sometimes it seems like federal agencies are burning out hard drives on a daily basis)
At least it was the mommyboard, though. All of us floating around the smoking crater of Atlas park are REALLY hoping the team keeps backupS.
...if there was a second thing I learned, it was that modern society is built on a foundation of error messages and years of bleating system alarms...
...still want that self driving car?

Woot! Cannot wait :)
It's not code reporting management software but a software repository like Github or Bitbucket. We use Subversion (sometimes abbreviated as "SVN"):
https://subversion.apache.org/
I see from that page there might be an update for me to deal with as well.
For gory details of our server setup it's a FreeNAS system. I have in a "jail" a FAMP stack I've set up: FreeBSD, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. On top of this I've installed Subversion. Then for the team I set up a dynamically generated web page with each repository listed. Each listing has an embedded text editor that can be used to change the published name of the repository and the description. The text editors can run independently and are full WYSIWYG editors using Javascript with web editing ability. I did all that part in a weekend. I taught myself how to set up the FAMP stack in less than a week. But I had experience with LAMPP stack setup (the last "P" is Post Office Protocol for email). Within the company they jokingly call me "repo man".
Anybody needing a custom computer or server? :) I can set you up a system optimized for playing City of Titans when it releases.

Compulsively clicking the refresh button until the next update.

Surely, sir, you are not suggesting your mother is a low-level villain?! :-)

I grew up with her; I can assure you, with great confidence, that she's a villainous mastermind!

I have to ask what many are thinking......Did it work?
Not sure yet. I forgot the laptop hadn't been fired up in a couple of months. I was going to do it outside on my front porch where my lighting would have been the best - update hell. It took so long it got dark out... and I still wasn't finished. I want to record this for inhouse records anyways even if I don't make it public - I still hope to be able to do that for our backers anyways though.

Sorry, I meant the operating system update, not the game update. I assume that's now delayed by another week or even more.
