Anyone else hear about this? Apparently the people behind this project are working towards emulating/spoofing the game servers that our CoX clients used to connect to. They've been at it a while but I guess they made a lot of headway recently because they're suddenly all over the place with updates.
While it's still only Issue-0 and barely working, this emulator should (if they are successful) eventually allow you to run your own little CoX server. They're even talking about providing tools to allow you to make new content, or add to the "vanilla" content. Good luck to them if they can actually pull this off.

Been aware of it for well over a decade. They began work around Issue 2 IIRC.

Wow - I've only just heard of them - just happened to see one of their videos pop up in my YouTube feed. If they've only come so far after so long I'll definitely dial down my expectations then, heh.
I could've swore someone posted about this on here within the last month or so, but my search-fu revealed nothing of the sort. I'm thinking I saw it on some gaming website, like Massively.
Ah ha, found it: http://massivelyop.com/2018/04/04/city-of-heroes-emulator-pumps-out-its-first-public-release/
I would assume S.E.G.S. would be targeted with a C&D as soon as they have anything close to a playable game. With the rumors of why CoH shut down and the BS they pulled with Master x Master flipping CoH assets (avoiding CoH becoming public domain), NCsoft would be just petty enough to deny some people their nostalgia.

According to them they aren't going to be touching any NCSoft IP - they're just making server code. That it just happens to line up with what our CoH clients used to communicate with, well, that's just pure "coincidence" (wink wink nudge nudge). Edit: apparently they're looking at it as an "educational endeavor." Basically, if someone takes that server code, flicks a few "script switches" and enables their own private little CoH game for themselves, their family or close friends? That's on them. I'd say if someone tries to make a public CoH server out of it, that will probably have a target painted on it's forehead, but who knows.
I poked around briefly on their forums when I first read the Massively article, and to touch on the point about the CoH IP, this mostly appears to be the case. I believe I read that they want people (volunteers, I presume) to write content for the game, including NPC contacts and the like, so they don't cross that line into intellectual property theft/misuse/C&D behavior. So you wouldn't be talking to Statesman for a series of storyarc-related missions, in fact States wouldn't presumably even exist in the game. I think they even said they want people to design powers and such. Again, I'm pulling this from memory from a very short visit to their site a month ago, so I could be mistaken.
You are not mistaken - this is what they've been saying on Reddit as well. Like I said in the first post - they say they are looking at providing/developing tools so that people can create their own content. How extensive/robust or even user-friendly these tools would be I have no idea.
So... they're making the ultimate AE out of CoH, as in the whole game world and not just a small sim inside the game.
