I've played other mmos and the controls to navigate are way too different from coh. coh arrow keys allowed you to turn left and right and move forwards compared to the mouse heavy dcuniverse online. yuck.

Please keep the coh movement controls
Agreed!!
CoH addict for 8+ years...and counting
As long as it's an option and I can keep left and right arrow as strafing.

I have found that CoH was the only game that I actually use the keyboard for navigation. I mapped the direction keys to the numberpad. In nearly every other game I play, or have played,(CO, TSW, Skyrim, AvP, etc.) I use the mouse for direction control and a gamepad for forward, reverse, and strafing. I never could get used to WASD direction controls though.
Being used the WASD scheme might be considered by now to be more of an "old person" thing - as in anyone who was playing PCs games before maybe the year 1995 or so. In this age of smartphones, tablets and next-gen consoles I'd imagine keyboard play may sadly go the way of the dinosaurs soon enough.

I remapped WASD to ESDF so that my fingers were always on the home keys for touch typing.

I tried WASD and found that I preferred keeping my fingers in a line on the same row of keys. So instead of WASD I would instead use QWES. Then I shifted over one key to the right and wound up using WERD instead.
W = strafe left
E = forward
R = strafe right
S = turn left
D = backwards
F = turn right
I found that operationally, it was easier for the shape of my fingers to have the strafe left/right on the same row as the forwards key, since I rarely used the backwards movement and pretty much relied on the mouse for spinning left/right and up/down in most cases, rather than relying on the keyboard to do that (although I kept the keyboard keys for turning enabled, just in case). The beauty of this arrangement was that it was only a very short stretch up from WER to reach 1-6 as well as the F1-F6 keys, and my fingers were always kept close by for quick clicking. Ironically, because of the shape of my keyboard and use of the E key for forward movement, the 3 key was one of the more complicated finger moves to reach because I used my middle finger for the E key by default, which made use of the 3 key a ring finger operation where my middle finger's positioning made this an atypical stretch.

I always re-map slightly to:
Q = turn left
W = Forward
E = turn right
R = auto-run
A = strafe left
S = backwards
D = strafe right
F = interract
call it what you want. I guess im a dinosaur 6 year coh vet. i call it the way im used to. Please at least keep it as an option to have the arrow keys cntrl foward back left right movements. i had a friend who rather used a game controller but as 4 me im used to the keyboard. coh taught me how to type 40wpm compared to the huntnpeck method i was using b4.lol
I guess this is a meta-comment on my age, then, because I consider WASD as "new-fangled".

Eh, we're living in an age where kids barely remember CDs much less keyboard-based PC games. ;)

Gaaaaah! Stop making me feel old! *remembers cassette tapes and Sony Walkman*
Hey, I'm happy I don't see cassettes, with most of their tape pulled out like spaghetti, lying in the gutters any more.

I remember those punch cards! And how disastrous it was if you dropped them without rubber bands around them. Arrggghhh. Flashback to the computer Science Lab....
And are you suggesting that my vinyl albums are obsolete? wow...I guess I should shut that off then, but it sounds good...
No, no, no! Vinyl Albums are now 'retro-cool'.
I remember the end of '45s and reel-to-reel recordings and 8-track and the invention of these cool things called cassette-tapes...
But I'm not 'old', no! Because I'm still playing games. You all are keeping me young.
I re-map movement to the number-pad.
Be Well!
Fireheart
I remember all that too, and I tell everyone that I'm not old.
It helps that most people think I'm about 10 years younger than I actually am as well...
It is somehow comforting to see so many other 'not old' people who also manage to remember things like these.

My first course at school was using cards with all the possible characters in a line, about 15-20 lines on a card, and you crossed out the character you wanted on each line with a pencil, this was read by a graphite reader, c. 1976.

I wish I could figure out how to map DCUO movement to CoX-style inputs. Because heroes art-directed by Jim Lee are awesome and I'd have something to play until CoT gets rolling. :)
But the whole running-forward-back-into-yourself thing with the recalcitrant camera ruins it. >:(
I remember reading a report in the school paper at UNT when they retired their last punched-card reader. There was much rejoicing.

I still have my C64 Vic20.....
I did that as well.
I hope (and given what I know of the devs, expect) that we'll have as robust a keybind system as CoH did. Which will mean I don't care what the devs map the movement keys to, I'll set it up to please myself.
WASD was already in my muscle memory when I picked up CoH.

This is a frequent debate. I came from a game that had the "mouse-click-to-move" type of navigation and it had advantages.. The keyboard was dedicated to the chat window for most situations, so that allowed you to type and go, rather than hit the backspace (or whatever activated the chat window) and type.
The biggest transition challenge for me:
- as team lead, trying to type "ready?" before engaging a mob.
- the "R" command would have my character running straight into the mob. My next reflex was to hit backspace, putting me in chat, where the rest of my wasd commands were correctly assumed to be a line of curse words.
I'm OK with the wasd controls now, but I wonder if we'll see the industry gravitate to the mouse-based controls now that touch-screen and gesture-based UI's are becoming more prevalent.
I would rather play entirely on the keyboard (or as much as practical) than be jumping back and forth all the time. Keyboard for movement, when combined with a robust macro allows F7 for /team Ready? and all sorts of other specific chat as well as other commands.
Playing right hand on mouse, left hand on arrow keys with \ [ ] all bound to targeting was the only way I could play. (Target nearest, next nearest, furthest)
As long as I can have my various binds, I think i can make it.
I kamehameha'd your mom
I think pretty much regardless of controls I always just end up going to the key binds and changing them to whatever i want. So as long as I can change all key binds and attacks aren't tied to the mouse like in DC then I'm good.

I also vote for keeping the old CoH controls, or at least allowing that configuration as an option.
The biggest blockade that kept me from playing DCUO is that I just didn't like how the controls worked . . . or how the characters looked. In CoH I used the directional keys for movement, only occasionally using the mouse. Macros were a real life saver after I discovered how to use them.
And cassette tapes, a Vic-20 . . . I could probably find some eight-tracks and an abacus in the loft of my garage ; )

hehe, indeed... I am in the tell him "No, you're not old" club. :)
On a related note, a lot of what I listen to is current stuff (last.fm has been a godsend in helping me find obscure stuff I would otherwise not have tripped over), but I do like returning to songs I stopped listening to (since they had become so familiar that I stopped actually hearing them after a while). Hearing them again as the current-me lets me enjoy them in a different way than past-me did before. So many 'great revelations' in life are things you have heard over and over, but you don't really get it... until you've already got it. ^_^7

How about this? When the game first starts, it will ask you, if you prefer wasd, arrow, or maybe even game pad. But from the menu you can customize your set up however you desire.
Universally for all mmo's I have this set up.
wasd for basic movement.
Strafe is a and d while holding right click.
You have to keep in mind the advantages to wasd, some people even use esdf. Why? Because it grants easy and fast access to the number keys 1-7.
For my full set up, I use Q and also E for hot keys as well. Plus I use the middle mouse click and the extra six buttons I have on the side of my naga hex mouse. I plan to get a new razer keyboard soon too, which includes 5 more keys on the left side of caps lock for mapping even more quick commands, and a few under the space bar as well.
The advantage to this, maximum amount of abilities I can access swiftly while moving constantly. Useful for all situations, but mostly gives you an edge in pvp with just about every mmorpg undert he sun. Although a bit overkill for guild wars 2, but still nice to have.
I never saw much use in having two ways to do the same thing, that being strafe, plus I prefer strafing with right click and using the keys a and d, just seems like a tragic waste of two very easy to reach hot keys which I tend to map to either a critical utility move to save my skin, and or disables, depending on the character, then 1-7 tends to be the moves I spam, other keys are for things like combat consumables and abilities while nice to have fast, are not abilities I will use in every situation, but when those situations present themselves, I can reach them instantly, providing game play with as little manual left clicking on abilities as physically possible while maintaining ease of use and comfort. With a bit of practice.
And that's not even getting into macros!
So please, make the game easy for casuals, but customizable for hard core demograph, this game will attract all sorts, trust me.
Keeping the COH movement would definitely be preferred (especially with how easily re-mappable it was). I actually use a combo of mouse and Razr Nostromo gamepad for my movement, then switching to the regular keyboard to type in chat and such.
All you youngins!
