On Patrol OOC

This is the thread for coordinating posts in the RP thread "On Patrol". I ask that OOC (Out of Character) posts be kept out of the RP thread to best allow for immersion and story flow. Please introduce your characters here and give any background information that you feel like.

As evidenced by the title, this RP is starting out with something simple and will just be heroes on patrol in their fair city, but if it manages to go somewhere story-wise, that's cool.

1. No killing other people's characters without explicit permission
2. Do not dominate the story or try to force other player's to do things they don't wish to.
3. I'd like this to be a story about heroes for the most part, so try to avoid villainous hijinks, m'kay?
4. Other than that, have fun!

Virtue forever!

Okay, X, I'll give this a go. I'm not sure how well I'll be able to keep up, but hopefully it'll work out.

General background for everyone: Andromeda is a power-suited heroine new to Titan City. At this point, she's not known to much anyone, and she's really not trying to change that. She's fairly content to be a shadowy stranger who stops by and does the occasional 'good deed' now and then. There are IC reasons for this that should come out in time, but she's not going to be eager to dump her life story on any strangers, heroes or not. It'll take some time and trust before she lets anyone really 'get to know her.' She's trying to maintain a genuine 'secret identity' as long as she can.

I don't think a turn order is really necessary. Everybody should just post when they feel like it. It's just a fun little RP to get the creative juices flowing, y'know?

X, how do you want to co-ordinate this? Do you have a basic size of the building? 10, 15, 20 floors? What caused the fire? It'll be tedious to bust down each door to find the victims, etc.

And Lady Nova isn't ever here yet! :)

Hmm, yeah. Coordination is good. Thanks.

In my second post, I stated that the building was ten stories tall. Let's say eight medium-size apartments per floor. Kaxiya was the first one to post about an explosion and I decided to run with it being arson. And you seem to have jumped on that dogpile. :-D

I don't think it's necessary to post about kicking down each door. Four have been rescued, we've got five to go. Whoever wants to can post about rescuing those five.

Ayra, my dear, you're playing a tech expert. Possibly one that could figure out if a bomb is still dangerous and how to deal with it?

snate, I'm not complaining, but I noticed that you switched from third-person to first-person with your most recent post. Any reason for that?

Nope, no real reason, just haven't done this before! Is there a problem with first or third person? Is it better to stick with one?

10 storeys, right. I missed that!

Yeah, at this point I just thought heck with it, and added a bomb...

If Ayra would like, she can fly up to me and I'll assist her in the window, with a nod and my usual talkative "Ma'am..."
And show her where the bomb is, then, if she could use my assistance, or go back to my business.

10 storeys... didn't realize I was so high up, you must be right above me!

Hi again.

Hi again.

Steve -- You're doing pretty well for a first-timer then. As far as first or third person, in general, it's best to choose one and stick to it. It tends to break up the flow of the story for readers when you swap between them. In a shared story like this with multiple writers, I'd say it's generally better for everyone to stick to third person. Again, it helps the flow of things -- someone reading it would just read along as if a single outside narrator were telling the story the whole time, rather than 'hopping back and forth' in perspective from character to character.

In general, don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any, and please don't feel bad if we ask questions or give criticism here -- though if I do, I'll certainly try to keep it constructive! It's all for fun in the end, though if we can polish our writing skills too, all the better. (And feel free to offer constructive criticism of my writing too, if you like.)

X -- Hmm. The techie always gets tagged to do bomb removal. It's not really her thing, but if Andromeda has a look at it, she should be able to make sense of the electronics, aye. Don't know if you recall the -last- time Andromeda had bomb-disposal duty though. (It was a short-lived forum RP on the old LoT forums with other CO characters. The building went into the ocean, but that was a very different situation. I'm sure this will turn out better.) ;-)

Although, you may want to try breaking your posts up into paragraphs so that the whole thing looks a little less run-on.

Not sure where you want to

Not sure where you want to take things now. The camera angle (pun somewhat intended) is one I'm not really sure what to do with. Why -would- someone set a fire and run surveillance on it to see who would happen by, just out of circumstance? I don't know where that's going. It just feels too random and senseless to me -- I'd like something that feels a bit more reasoned and thought out -- some kind of motive, I guess. But that's just me. Some of you may do better making it up on the fly. If you folks get it going somewhere, I could follow, but I don't feel up to taking the lead with this one.

My own thought was to follow up on the Honey Badger landing once the fire was dealt with. Andromeda had noted his trajectory, and now has power to her systems that she could go see if there's anyone to save on the other end of his precipitous drop. Are you still with us/wanting to continue here, HB?

Perhaps I'll break off to look into the church crash while Flashpoint and Paul investigate the camera. Not sure yet. Feel free to move things along a bit.

Just my thoughts, but what if a villainous type set the fire on purpose and had cameras set up to 1) see just how various incendiary devices would function 2) observe disaster response (civilian and or hero) actions so as to better gauge another planned attack they had in mind 3) To flush out any heroes in the area so as to gauge their abilities and or possible threats to future plans 4) Maybe they just like to watch things BURN!! ;)

Hope this helps

Hey all! Just joined the site 'cause the RP aspect of it but I'm sure I'll end up playing this game when it's good to go in 2015. Figure I'll throw in Alexias, demi-god daughter of Bastet. I'm not even done her character sheet yet or anything in the Backstory section, though she's an old character of mine I'd like to use for here. I figure she'll be closer in powers to the Halle Barry 'Catwoman'. She was originally for a series of novels I wanted to do. I figure it'd be neat if she could turn into an over-sized black panther...I'm just going to roll with the character and see where it goes. Ability to communicate with felines and get them to aid her was originally one of the things she could do as well--big or small. Then you have the stronger than normal, agility, retractable claws and fangs, night vision, super hearing and smell...haven't decided if I should do the whole 'Thor' immortality thing, or merely make her really hard to kill, like a vampire, or like Wolverine with the whole 'heal factor'. Decisions, decisions...

I left motive up to you guys,

I left motive up to you guys, I figured our watcher was looking to scope out a particular hero; data about those nanites, for instance, might be valuable to the right buyers, etc
He could have been after anyone who showed, or just after you...

Or... He could one of those guys that likes to hang around a watch his handiwork... could be someone outside in the crowd with a laptop...

I believe such a bomb would result in a soft (relative) but fiery explosion. Might not shatter things, but strong enough to boot all of us out into the street. But I'm no expert. ;)

Alex, lemme know how old you decide for your daughter of Bastet, You might know my character! He's been around "awhile". Hung out in the same circles, as it were!

I haven't decided on an age, does your character have a backstory sheet or anything? I really couldn't decide if I wanted her to be younger in age or older. Looks wise, maybe about 23...or I could make her fresh outta' the box at 18 or so. Again with the decisions, heh heh.

My problem with the 'looking

My problem with the 'looking to scope out a particular hero' concept is that this was totally haphazard: IE, there was no way anyone could predict who may or may not respond, if anyone, in terms of heroes. If it were aimed to draw in a specific hero, there should have been some kind of setup addressing that person to draw him/her in particular to the site. We could, of course, retroactively embellish the circumstances of any given character's arrival, but I really don't like to retro-write in a shared story. (And being a shared story, do we really want to single-out any given character? That's more stuff for our own backstories, I think. And believe me, Andromeda already has people looking for her in her own background.)

I've no clue about bombs and explosions. Only thing I can say is that I know it's been said that liquid gasoline doesn't really explode well. It's the fumes that go boom. The liquid burns really well though.

Naw, I don't have a backstory yet. I was going for a kinda mystery man approach. But I'm not experienced at this, so should I come up with a full disclosure OOC so that others know what to play off of? Or just bits as situations arise?

As for the camera, it was just off the top of my head. Thought I'd add a detective angle to things. As for any hero showing up, he could've just been taking his chances. As for a particular hero showing up, maybe he knows you better than you'd like...;)

As for the bomb, I made an assumption that a smaller bomb was attached to the timer to set off the gasoline.

Alexias, might I suggest the

Alexias, might I suggest the TedGrant/ Wildcat from DC Comics route? If you're not familiar with him, Ted had some kind of magic effect placed on him that gave him nine lives. No matter how grievous the injury, if he dies, he will resurrect. But only eight times, of course.

However... what kind of relationship does she have with her mother? And how do you want to portray Bastet? I ask because I just had an idea. What if, when she expends all nine of her lives, Bastet will require her to perform some kind of task. It could be distasteful/evil, or just insanely difficult. But she doesn't know this yet, because she's still on her first cycle of lives.

As for the camera, I like numbers two and three that Kaxiya listed. What if it was done by someone like the Shadow Broker from the Mass Effect series, who gathers and stores massive amounts of information on everyone and everything, then sells that information to the highest bidder?

We're just starting out, that's pretty big picture.
Make it an arsonist pyromaniac that literally wants to watch the world burn.
Even if there was a clue on the devices whom it was from then we probably have a bunch of buildings to save before he's stopped.
Also, I could swap out Honey Badger for a robot or a healer. I also have a jump-centric hero with a rocket fist.
Though there should be a 'big guy' and he fits the bill.
Thoughts?

Steve -- nothing too terrible

Steve -- nothing too terrible. Missed a typo on Flashpoint's name -- 'Flashback.' You got it right later in the post though, so I'm sure it was just a slip of the fingers.

X -- While Andromeda got the Beatles reference IC, she may have missed Paul Revere, being Scottish. If Paul's ox was blue, he could be a lumberjack too -- but that's another reference Andromeda wouldn't know, so I'll content myself with mentioning it here OOC.

One thing of note: No one's perfect (and likewise, no equipment is either), so Andromeda must've missed it this time, but the suit's got an exceptional sensor suite, so it would be rather odd for her to miss things like a secondary detonator very often. Just don't want to see it become a trend, as the odds are heavily in her favor for detecting that sort of thing.

A little about the Andromeda power-suit in a nutshell (all of this is OOC, but may be useful so you have an idea what it does): Andromeda (the lady in the suit -- we'll just call her that for now) was originally designing it as a powered exoskeleton for manned exploration in space -- it's made to be self-sustaining, has full life-support for the astronaut (pilot) inside and an extensive suite of sensors that can pick up energy readings, EM-emissions/radiation, chemical traces, amino acids, water concentrations, magnetic fields, light amplication (or blocking, in case of direct light from the sun, etc.), themographic imaging, has a densitometer -- basically a comprehensive field array of scanning equipment. It's got a crazy amount of sensor equipment for a combat suit, because it didn't actually start out to be a combat suit. (The onboard computer is also very good at computing force vectors for navigation -- ballistic trajectories, gravitational forces, and so forth for travel.)

Somewhere along the way, the ESA dropped funding ("Impractical" they said, "Even the yanks at NASA have shelved manned exploration for now."). Very much wrapped up in her creation, Andromeda sought other funding to continue the project. Her new backers turned out to be on the shady side, though she didn't know that at the time. (Admittedly, she was eager to continue her work, and a bit naive -- had she checked into them more thoroughly, perhaps she would've found out, but that's not how things went.)

The new investors started pushing for additions -- like defensive systems -- essentially, they sought to weaponize the suit, and though they started out making 'reasonable-sounding' requests, they became demands in time, and the nature of her new backers became clear to Andromeda. Suffice to say that, in the end, she left with the suit and they're not terribly happy with that. That's the main reason she left Scotland and came to the States and Titan City. (But again, that's all OOC info -- no one but Andromeda herself (and her mysterious investors) know these details yet.)

The suit is fairly well-suited for combat. Andromeda's personal goal was ultimately to make a suit capable of exploring on Venus. If you've read anything at all about Venus -- well, that's a very tall order. It may not be up to that standard just yet, but it's quite tough. One of the key systems for sustainability as well as exploration is what she calls the 'salvage swarm.' It's basically a highly versatile nanobot swarm. The swarm is capable of sampling and identifying substances, as well as collecting substances specified by it's programming and returning said substances to the suit. This can also be used to collect energy (solar, thermal, etc.), which is what was happening in the case of extinguishing the fire -- the swarm absorbed all the heat from the flames (very quickly and efficiently) and returned the energy to the suit which processed it to charge it's own systems. The salvage of matter is basically a matter of molecular disassembly and reassembly -- the swarm also acts as nanoassemblers to effect repairs on the suit. There are, of course, prohibitions against salvaging from living beings.

And, of course, it has actual weapons systems now. Plasma beams built into the forearms and a sort of micro-missile system -- it's actually more like tiny photon torps (ala Star Trek) -- but that's more than enough details for now. ;)

Again, this is all OOC information, but hopefully it'll be a help as far as expectations when writing.

Well, it surprised me too! But maybe your suit was lower on power than you thought, or maybe our watcher is far more sophisticated than we thought. He was actually able, somehow, to hide his secondary from you. Could be a frightening revelation.

Ahh, now that is a very good point. Given how firmly she's rooted in science and technology, magic could certainly blindside Andromeda.

Sorry to see you go, HB.

Sorry to see you go, HB.

Wow, a lady gets knocked out by channeling a massive fireball and suddenly heroes are crawling out of the woodwork.

Okay, I think we need to take a breath and establish where everyone is, because there seems to be some confusion. At least I'm a little confused, but what's new about that?

Flashpoint and Paul are out on the street after Paul caught Flashpoint, who is currently unconscious.
Andromeda was still in the hallway after the explosion?
Honey Badger has left the building *snickers*.
Nick (?) has fled the scene.
Shep and Rotten are in the building, presumably in the hallway where the bomb was.
Nova is still in the alleyway?

I'm pretty confused too. How many times are we going to disarm the same bomb? (Which has already exploded, so . . . there's likely not much to look at anymore.) Or are the newcomers in some other room with yet -another- bomb?

I know everyone's trying to find a way to get involved, but it almost seems we're falling into some kind of bizarre time-loop rather than moving things forward. There were 9 people, all out, okay, building's clear. No, there's someone in the basement, okay, they're safe, building's clear. Then we're checking to make sure we got everyone out. Bomb's disarmed, no, not disarmed, goes off, then we're examining/disarming a magically-fused device a moment later?

I think I may remove myself just for a bit 'til things find some kind of track, then pop back in after having done a little independent investigation in the background or somesuch.

At this point, since multiple posts have already been made, it would be simplest to just go with there being another bomb.

Gladatoria, can Nova's abilities refresh someone who is exhausted? That's her biggest problem at the moment.

Anyone else think we should cap the current number of participants? Yeah yeah, I know I said "The more, the merrier", and God knows I don't want to alienate anyone, but it's looking like if we get any others, this thread could very quickly go off the rails.

With myself, Ayra, Steve, Rotten, Shep, and Glad, we have six regulars. I don't think Dudesoft is coming back. However, that still leaves the question of participation from Kaxiya, Alexias, and GFN.

If you three are still monitoring this OOC, could you please post your intentions? Thank you.

I have acknowledged that in Psikon's backstory in the Backstory subforum. He's powered down considerably due to the dimensional imbalance, retaining only five abilities (Psionic Barrier for Defense, Telekinesis for offense, Enhanced Intellect and Telepathy for RP purposes and Levitation for travel). He is also without resources or allies, so he'll be looking for money and/or fellow villains to gain his bearings and learn what has happened to him.

What did you have in mind?

Mostly that the heroes are one step behind Psikon in his bearings journey. He attacks a convenience store clerk but spares the bystanders when they inform him that his archnemesis doesn't exist in CoT. He robs a bank of everything, but leaves the loot behind and simply takes one gold bar for hotel, food and dry cleaners. Throughout the night, the heroes learn more and more about Psikon and realize he is not of their universe and begin to wonder how many more "visitors" may show up.

But if we want to keep rule 3, I can have Psikon feign hero when the the other heroes meet him and mistake him for one of their own. Would really add an element of surprise as they patrol with him and find unease with his brand of *street justice.

*By street justice, I mean when he brutally beats villain skulls in and makes violent and domineering suggestions to solve problems, like hanging an informant upside down from a high rooftop with his mind and threatening to drop them.

An enthusiastic greeting from one feline being to another, at any rate. :-)

I'd wait to see what Xselcier says to be certain. He's the creator/GM for the thread. I know he'd said we're getting close to capacity as things were getting a bit chaotic back there for a bit. Not sure what the official word is. I know I tend to get a bit lost in the shuffle and drift off when the group grows really large. Though folks do come and go, and it sounds like Gideon/Shepard is off for a bit now.

I think John McClane sums it up best, "Welcome to the party, pal!"

On a separate note, excellent choice for a signature, Steve.

How discreet is your distance, Amerikatt, and are you doing anything to obscure yourself?

I know I started this whole thing with Flashpoint, and she has kind of stepped up as the leader, but I'm just not "feeling it" with her right now. So I'm gonna switch to another character, at least for a little while. Flashpoint may return at some point.

This thread seems to be

This thread seems to be getting more popular, so I think it's about time we began considering how big we want the cast to get. I myself would prefer not exceeding six, maybe seven characters. Anything more can get very confusing/chaotic.

Currently, there's Overdrive, Andromeda, Paul, Lady Nova, Rotten Luck, Amerikatt, and possibly Siwyenbast's character. I think this thread's group has about reached it's limit.

Perhaps, instead of one thread with a huge cast, we could have multiple On Patrol threads going at one time? I mean, the title is generic enough that each groups adventures could go in wildly different directions. And for those willing to keep up with multiple RP's, there could be crossovers or said people could play multiple characters in multiple threads.

Is there anyone who'd be willing to head up... ... wait for it... ... On Patrol 2?

Well, I just posted my opener on the main thread. Sorry if I got a little info dump-y, it's a weakness of mine when I text RP, and mainly in my openers. At this point I need to keep up with the thread, a whole bunch of homework, and other games I have throughout the weekends, so I wouldn't be able to head up any new thread until maybe christmas break.

I do however like the idea, but only if it can be reasonably kept up by those who play in it. I've seen many a text rp fizzle because the amount of threads got too big and/or life happened.

For myself, I'd prefer to cap

For myself, I'd prefer to cap the thread off where we are now. (With Siwyenbast as the latest/last addition -- for now.) I certainly don't mean to slight any of the others who are interested, but I know I can't really keep track of more people in a single situation than this myself. IMO, we really do need more RP threads here for folks to dive into -- whether they be direct spin-offs of this one or another idea someone else throws out there. This one's drawing a lot of attention as it's more or less the only game in town, as open RP goes. Of course, if some of the folks here decide to shift gears to one of these other threads, or folks just leave for whatever reason, we could always open it up to fill the gaps.

Just my own 2 cents.

I certainly can't start up another thread -- I can barely keep up with this one when everyone gets posting rapidly. Though perhaps Doc Simian might? I did catch that 'at the same time but not involved' bit -- that could be just the thing to springboard a new thread that could perhaps have crossover action if folks in both threads desired it.

What we need is locations from the DEVs on the kickstarter they gave a list of some of the Zones and some descriptions. So lets brake down the Patrols into Zone/Hoods.

2.) If it goes as planned it's not good RP

I think John McClane sums it up best, "Welcome to the party, pal!"
On a separate note, excellent choice for a signature, Steve.
How discreet is your distance, Amerikatt, and are you doing anything to obscure yourself?
I know I started this whole thing with Flashpoint, and she has kind of stepped up as the leader, but I'm just not "feeling it" with her right now. So I'm gonna switch to another character, at least for a little while. Flashpoint may return at some point.

I'd say that Amerikatt is probably a mile or two in the air and is not using any powers in order to hide.

I love cats. I've had 'em

I love cats. I've had 'em since I was a baby and being a spiritual Bast kid made sense when I went through one of my faith's rites of passage. My kitty Angie is about 12 years old now and loves pets and teriyaki jerky. Sorry if I'm kinda off-topic, I'm tired and won't get a cat nap til after I'm done with class for the day.

Writer catwoman at play...

Oh, in that case, I will alter my intro post for Overdrive and have him meeting the group instead.

So Glady, you won't need to change your post where you're greeting him. *curses himself for having just gotten rid of a hero that can fly*

Not just *a* cat in a costume and cape, but *the* cat in a costume and cape!

Which is to say, a domestic

Which is to say, a domestic cat-sized cat, or a more humanoid-sized, anthropomorphic (at least to some extent) cat? (I was envisioning the latter, as certainly any in-game character from CoH or any other MMO would be humanoid of necessity.)

Amerikatt is a young Russian Blue cat dressed in a purple cowl, costume, and cape, which are adorned with pink stars. She is 100% cat, although she has powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal cats.

((In CoH, her mother was hostess to a Kheldian Peacebringer, whose cosmic energies mutated the kitten developing within her pregnant mother. However, Amerikatt does not have Kheldian shapeshifting powers nor was there the usual secondary Kheldian sentience present, as she was not hostess to the alien. Later on, Amerikatt became the Champion Incarnate of "The Great (Cat) Mother", who had guided her from before birth and imbued her with magical healing powers, etc.))
