New or old characters?

Now I have been thinking about this a while and quick question to those here: Basically will you create a new character or use your old one and have a story of of how or why they appeared here or exist all this time? I have the idea of a last ditch effort to save the CoHvese people by using a dimensional shift by the "Incarnate Source" that brought mine, so I am in the recreate camp. How about you all?

Evolution is key. And mutants are key.

I might carry over an old character or two that's "aware" of the difference between the CoH "universe" and the CoT one.

But I'll probably reimagine other old characters into the new CoT world as if CoT was the only "world" there ever was. I've been roleplaying in various games for decades and I have a bunch of characters that I've periodically re-rolled into new games that don't technically "know" that they've ever existed in prior games.

Obviously I'll likely just create some completely new characters for CoT too. *shrugs*

For me, it often depends on Story. I have a handful of characters that have deep, well-developed backgrounds and fitting those stories into the game-universe is an issue. In some cases, it may not be possible to create my old characters until the Devs get around to building their class or power. My favorite Controller needs Mind Control and Storm Summoning (or something equivalent) and I don't know when or IF those powers will be available. Even more difficult will be fitting my Dual Blades Tanker, 'Rogue Nightwolf' into the new setting - is there even a faction that creates anthropomorphic Wolf Soldiers in CoT?

So, many of my choices will depend on further developments in mechanics and lore in the new game. Then I can figure out how my characters fit.

Be Well!

I have been recreating and creating new characters for CoT.

Rotten Luck I been roleplaying here on the forums I had a version of him going back into 1990's it's not too hard to recast him here. Same with Misty Sinclair aka Misty Spirit she's a CoH being respawned.

I had the idea of using Pocket D for transplants. DJ Zero having made a Pocket Dimension for his club could logically shut down the connections to the CoH universe and reconnect them to the CoT universe. Could even have the back story involving the time when the Pocket D drifted from one reality to another till it found CoT. Could be an interesting RP heroes and villains adrift in a pocket dimension connecting to realities like Sliders to collect food and resources as they search for a new home.

But mostly I'm with Fireheart some of my characters were power dependant. There no way I could bring my Warshade back, for example, I would have to recreate him using some other kinds of powers. Even then he wouldn't be a Warshade.

Personal rules of good roleplay

2.) If it goes as planned it's not good RP

Short answer: no.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: I tried this when I started translating CoX characters into CO, but in many ways it just did not work very well. Mimicking appearances is easily possible, but there are several powersets in CoX that just do not exist in CO, and attempting to "make do" unavoidably creates an entirely different character, one that plays differently and has different strengths, weaknesses, and role possibilities.

With so many differences, substantially expanding the origin story to explain not only what the CoX universe was, but how they were able to travel between universes when there is nothing in-game to support it, and why their origins and powers changed (in some cases radically) was just too much. (Also, CO does not allow creation of playable villains, so all villains had to have longer origin stories to explain how they became sinister anti-heroes.) Several CoX toons had origins that gave them relationships to signature characters and organizations, many of which did not have CO analogues, requiring another change in the origin story with explanation, or adoption of a CO signature character that was different enough that it dictated other changes. It resulted in horrifically long origins that the largely ADHD game population were never going to read.

So, as with that game, in CoT I will have a core of characters who strongly resemble old characters dear to me, but because their powers will likely not be the same and they won't play the same, I won't pretend that they are the same characters as the CoX originals. They will just be similar characters who have only just discovered their powers. To use a DC Comics analogy, maybe they will be the Earth-1 reimaginings of Earth-2 characters, but not refugees from Earth-2.

As a long time Trekkie (Trekker? whatever) I usually just use the Mirror, Mirror analogy to explain/visualize this idea. There were at least 6 or 7 "Mirror" episodes spread across the various Star Trek series/books that all did a pretty good job of taking existing characters and "re-rolling" them with different personalities and circumstances which pretty much mimics the comicbook "multiverse" concept.

I basically do the same thing whenever I "reincarnate" old characters into new games. Obviously things like powers/skills are usually completely different from one game system to the next so I don't get too hung up on trying to recreate the exact identical character from a game mechanics point of view. Sometimes I'll even turn "heroes" into "villains" or vice-versa. There's no real set formula I use whenever I recycle characters like this - it usually just boils down to what seems like a fun idea at the time.

New characters.

New characters.

It's just how I do things. Creating new characters is always easier for me than trying to recreate former ones. I might reuse names or certain backstory elements because they have universal application, but each character is for me, a unique fictional person.

For me, a MMORPG is a fictional world, a living book that I can add characters and stories to by interacting with the world and the other players.

Yeah, for me creation is the highlight. Playing the game is just the realization of what I created. So, probably make all new characters... on the other hand, I think I would like to make some that are the same or similar just so I can realize them in this game world to see what that would be like.
I like to take your ideas and supersize them. This isn't criticism, it is flattery. I come with nothing but good will and a spirit of team-building. If you take what I write any other way, that is probably just because I wasn't very clear.

New characters, certainly.

New characters, certainly. While I was rather attached to my old ones from City of Heroes, particularly my Robotics mastermind, well, first off Operators won't be available at launch so that's 2/3 of my primary characters unavailable at launch, and furthermore it doesn't really feel right to try and bring them over. A new game is time for a fresh start; make something unique and interesting, even if you pull elements from older ideas.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

So long as I can accomplish a NO GET HITSU!! performance with a martial arts fighting style, Redlynne will return. Without NO GET HITSU!! there is no Redlynne.

Other characters from City of Heroes will probably get recreated.

Ms Givings was a Mind Controller, whose $Battlecry was "Trust your Ms Givings!" and is easy enough to recreate given appropriate Mez Support (and a Secondary that isn't too "physical").

Sidhe Bang was a Storm/Dual Pistols Defender (mainly for the HERDicane To-hit Debuffing), but so long as we can do "dual pistols" in City of Titans, I can easily recreate her concept ... although she was one of my Praetorians.

Leggs was a joke taken so far it got serious. She was a statuesque (6 foot tall!) ladies underwear model(!) before she got abducted and put through Arachnos Soldier Training, which completely brainwashed her and left nothing of her original personality behind. She went on to be a Crab Soldier (so extra legs backpack and all) who turned into the big, beautiful, buff SOLDIER utterly loyal to Arachnos with a penchant for standing ankle deep in spent brass shell casings. Oh and she had really fantastic legs! She was always wearing stiletto heels and micro-skirts to show off her long, graceful, beautiful legs, which had been her "selling point" back in her former life as a model. I have a hard time imagining how I'd be able to (let alone want to!) recreate her in City of Titans ... since a part of the backstory was an overly zealous Lab Assistant eavesdropping in on a slightly drunken conversation between Dr. Aeon and Lord Recluse that got misinterpreted and yielded the Leggs Project ... which "worked" ... since it produced an exceptional Soldier ... but got the Lab Assistant with the temerity to actually go ahead and DO IT not only fired from their post but also "disappeared" and never heard from again. Something about stupid, but works, but can't be reproduced, still being stupid.

Golden Blonde was my Kinetic Melee/Energy Armor Stalker whose powers required a catalyst ... GOLD ... and all of the effects for her powers were tinted/toned a yellow/golden color and she wore "expensive" looking suits and skirts that were all embroidered with gold thread and she was a natural (golden) blonde and ... you get the idea. Oh and her day job was being a commodities trader in financial markets, so she had a "ready access" to supplies of gold for her preferred Fashion Statement (which in turn "fueled" her superpowers). If we get a powerset akin to Kinetic Melee, I could fairly easily recreate her.

Don't think I'll be able to recreate my Kheldians though.

Depends on what powers

Depends on what powers/cosmetics are available and how they work - but most likely I will both re-roll a few favourite characters AND create some new ones.

There are some favourite characters that I've ported over between pen & paper Supers RPGs, and then into a couple of different MMOs. Power Armor guy with Force Fields, Demigod Storm Controller, Flying Brick with Energy Blasts. Some are general enough to be re-created pretty faithfully in any "supers" system worthy of the name. Others may take a while for the powers/themes/animations/costumes to be filled out.

That said, I was a BIG altaholic in CoH so I figure there will be enough new powers, mechanics, costumes, lore, etc., in CoT to fuel my imagination, and let me come up with a constant string of new characters.

I've been thinking about that - the shapeshifting might be right out, but a reasonable facsimile of a humanform PB might be possible (they're reasonably straightforward). The WS might be a bit more difficult due to a few of the oddball powers they had (i.e. corpse explosion / health from corpses powers). I suppose it depends on the kinds of power effects available in CoT and how extensive the tertiary powers list is.

It all really depends on how "strict" you want to be with your definition of what a "Kheldian" is. In CoT with several costume slots you could "simulate" shape-shifting and if you RP that you're a "shape shifting alien" then you pretty much have a pseudo-Kheldian. *shrugs*

Well like I was implying it's up to the individual what's important to them when it comes to "re-rolling" a character from one game to another. For what it's worth the only Kheldian I had any fun playing for an extended period of time was a "human form only" one. ;)

Agreed! Humanform Khelds for the win!

As for "free powers" - I believe in CoT we get a base travel power for free. I can remember talk that there will be "higher levels" of these travel powers (or we can select multiple ones) - but I'm not sure if we unlock them with our Primary/Secondary/Tertiary power selections or if they (and possible other non-combat powers?) are selected on a different schedule. Can anyone remember the specifics?

I might be wrong, but my impressions made me (wrongly?) assume there is no true Defense in CoT!?

I cant recall where or which statements led be to believe/assume this, but i can very vaguely recall talk of removing the mechanic for true defense, meaning not getting hit, evasion. So there wont be an evasion defense mechanic, which means every character takes some damage, even if its very very tiny. :p

Like i said my assumption could be very wrong, just something that's been gnawing at my brain, but never really been able to grasp, if it was MWM that said it or not. :/

If I recall correctly - there are indeed Defense/Avoidance-based sets in the game, along with Damage Resistance/Soak-based sets. I can remember the devs describing the DR sets as "Fortitude" sets - can't remember what the term is for the DEF-based ones though. Really wish there was a working dev digest on these forums, or a wiki or faq, lol.

Whatever character I make

Whatever character I make first will most likely wear purple and irridescent green tights and shoot green energy of some kind and be named Radiac. I doubt I'll try to connect the story back to CoH. I mean, Radiac's origin story in CoH was never a terribly serious one. Here it is:

"In 1972 a cracked physicist was sent to prison by a universtiy student government for a crime he didn't commit. This man promptly escaped from a minimum-security frathouse basement and fled tot eh Paragon City underground. Today, still wanted by the coeds, he survives as a superhero-of-fortune. If you have a mission, if no one else is logged in, and if you can put up with his incessant tactless banter, maybe YOU can team with.... Radiac!"

I think that will port well into any hero game, so I'm not worried about the translation from CoX to CoT.

What I recall is that it was stated there will be something directly analogous to CoH's defense in CoT, but only positional types (melee, ranged and AoE in CoH). Resistances only exist against damage types.

Of course, that's going off memory, and who knows what has changed in the meantime.

I am scrapping a lot of my previous characters from CoV (accept for Glimmer who was my first hero character).

I was much younger when I made a lot of those characters so a lot of the concepts were just mashed together or was just simply meh. My very first villain character was Ninja/Forcefield Mastermind named Fathom. I had no flipping clue what I was doing back then so I ended up accidentally giving myself a really hard combination to work with...

I'll certainly be recreating

I'll certainly be recreating CoV toons in CoT. I'd written my own superhero universe when i was 8-12 years old, so I kept their lore away from CoH for for inevitable death of the game.

I'm sure I'll re-imagine a few: there's no obvious "illusion control" set or transforming earth armor. And my main, GS Necro, will have to wait for the pet class release.

What I'm excited for in CoT is more accurately bringing characters I'd written into a game. Smog (I've never been good with names :p) has martial arts, electric blasts, a retractable arm blade, toxins, reflexes, and hardened skin. In CoH, that became a standard MM/SR scrapper, which is disappointing. Hopefully I can cover many more of those powers with CoT's customization.

Same goes for Winter Flame, a swordsman with fire and ice sorcery. That became a katana/fire armor scrapper, with the ice totally left out.

Many of my CoX characters were not really "from" that world to begin with and can easily be recreated in CoT assuming I get appropriate power options. Joe Insanity and SyntaxError37 will most definitely return in this new game. Chances are they may even get closer to their "true forms" in this incarnation.

I have some cool names I will reuse, and maybe the backstory, but the looks and powers will be what this game offers, though I intend to keep to the general type, like scrapper, or later mastermind.

I only ever did one character really tied to a concept, and that was a "kid" with sonic powees who ran around screaming for his mom.

Storywise I'm thinking my personal headcanon will be that 20 years have passed since my CoH characters were active. Some of the old characters will still be active (particularly the long-lived or immortal), some will have retired with their kids taking their place, some will have died with their name picked up and ran with by new personas.

I kinda want to force myself out of the comfort zone of just trying to make the same old characters. My CoH creations were a combination of personal imagination meeting the specific options and synergies of the CoH costume creator, powersets, and powers. Things that were a perfect fit in CoH might be much less so in CoT, and vice versa, I want to find those new perfect fits.

I just want to get my hands

I just want to get my hands on another mastermind class/archetype equivalent. After I left CoH for personal reasons I could never find a game that made a pet class as satisfying as the Mastermind back in CoV. Hell the Dominators/Controllers were some of the most fun I had in utility/support/crown control classes in any MMO.

I played a Necromancer at the Launch of Guild Wars 2 and was horribly disappointed at just how bad and clunky the pets were. The only one that worked mildly well was the Flesh Golem. I haven't found one game out of countless that had a pet class as fun as Masterminds were. Not even one. Guild Wars 2 was the closest and the pets were horrible, atleast at the start they were.....

for the record, Nyktos, as a

for the record, Nyktos, as a necromancer player in Guild Wars 2, My best build at the moment is a minion master. They've gone through a ton of updates and buffs that make them worth using, and while it's not quite like the Mastermind, it's a decent second at this point.

God damn do I miss my Robotics MM.

An infinite number of tries doesn't mean that any one of those tries will succeed. I could flip an infinite number of pennies an infinite number of times and, barring genuine randomness, they will never come up "Waffles".

Maybe I should check back

Maybe I should check back into Guild Wars 2 again then to see that. A necromancer build that focused on pets was god awful at launch but I am glad to atleast hear that they improved it.

Yeah, Staff Necromancer in

Yeah, Staff Necromancer in GW2 is all about the Debuffs and letting the pets go to town. Works pretty good.

I think I'll start off with

I think I'll start off with New characters, at least until I get a good feel for what all is possible within the game (Lorewise, powerswise, costumewise, etc) and then I may recreate a few Old characters.

This also depends on things like number of character slots. If I have a lot of slots to work with, then the odds of seeing old characters return increases. If I only have a few, then they're likely to be used for all new characters.

A lot of my initial

A lot of my initial characters and some of the newer ones weren't tied to COH's story. They existed and their story was what they experienced in Paragon City and abroad. Now they will be coming to Titan City and they will start new stories for themselves. I've actually slowly been writing a story of that transition, which is about 12 pages long now. Basically the story has the evil aliens destroying Paragon and chasing the heroes to Titan City where they will eventually be destroyed. Then the new stories start there. And the whole thing is told from the eyes of a newbie hero just joining the ranks in Titan City. Some heroes are silver and some heroes are gold, all are good friends, some newer, some old.

I'm planning to bring some of

I'm planning to bring some of mine over from CoH mainly my favorite ones I took years to build up to my play style and personal perfection. Though I'll need to make major lore changes to them as well as maybe wait to fully develop them due to we don't know how much costume and power content will be available when CoT is released. Some I may do a full rework on their name and lore style. These are the ones I plan to remake/redo.

- Michael Gunslinger CoH Blue Side! Needs huge story update.

- HyperTurbo CoH Blue Side! Is in need of a power set remake and minor story update.

- Blizzard Burner CoH Blue Side! Just needs a very fast story patch up. Other than that he was a controller with fire/ice that I loved for unknown reasons.

- Archer Kid I CoH Blue Side! I'll most likely give him a full name remake along with a story rework. His power set was blaster with archery and trick arrows. I see no need to rework that combo.

- Assassin Kid CoH Rogue! This one I'll need do a full remake of his name and story, but I'll keep that he's an assassin like character who takes out higher priority targets.

The three main characters

The three main characters that I would want to bring to CoT were all intrinsically tied to CoH/V NPC groups/organizations (Circle of Thorns, Arachnos [Fortunata], and Kheldians [Peacebringer]), so bringing them to CoT would require major changes to their backstories... but then since I never really kept their stories anywhere but my head I suppose that'll be easy enough to accomplish.

All you need to do is change

All you need to do is change your head! *grin* Perhaps not as easy as it sounds.
