Naming system?

I am sure this has brought up before, but i can not for the life of me figure out how to use the search function on this forum :-x so i apologize if it has been.

Have they talked about how they plan on doing the naming policy? whether it will be everyone has to have a unique name as in CoX, or go the Champion's route where people can share a name and just base it off your unique global handle?

If not i really have to suggest you go the CO route, ESPECIALLY if from what i understand all players will be on one master server. It is just a much better system allowing people to grab the names they want, without resorting to replacing some letters with numbers, misspelling things, etc. while also being an occurrence in the medium ( Ever see the episode of The Tick where he fights the other Tick in the bar over name theft? hilarious)

On the home page and the See

On the home page and the See What's New page (and a few others) there is a Navigation sidebar to the left. Second from the bottom is "Search".

As for the names, there is a thread on just this subject (although the original poster wanted to go the other way).

When all is said and done I

When all is said and done I don't think I've ever truly heard of a more reasonable alternative to the "global@name" scheme for a game that chooses to go with the "one megaserver" concept. I played CO for roughly six months and I never really saw other people running around with "duplicate" names much less anyone who had MY same exact name. Sure it's obviously possible, but I think in reality the chances of seeing it too often is very low.

@Foradain thanks, i never

@Foradain thanks, i never would have noticed the function on my own. So used to it being accessed through the actual forum proper. And good to know it seems the consensus is they will be going with the @global handle, the only way to go IMO.

@Lothic agreed, especially for a superhero game. Fantasy, sci fi, or pretty much any form of genre where you simply use proper names, i can make do and make something that sounds decent yet is unique. But for superheroes, the name really is a defining feature of the character in my opinion, just as important as the powerset or costume.

Yes, and another thing to

Yes, and another thing to consider - due to the nature of the game it is highly likely that players will have multiple characters all being played at different times. Players will leave or take a break, new players will join - the chances of running into someone with the exact same name will be low (and even if you do - the will likely have an entirely different character concept/look). And at least with the @global there will be no instances of "name squatting" or even name selling.

Only seen it once myself, but it was a common enough name to want (Halo). Doing lots of PuGs, I never accidently teamed with the same name though.

It's really not that terrible, and I agree with the idea that with superheroes the name is just that important for one's own character! In a fantasy game I personally never cared if my name was unique as that seems like the setting to have same names running around.

But go into a superhero game, where you might want the unique name, it becomes more important for that perfect name. :p

I remember times when I had

I remember times when I had an idea. Worked for hour/s to get a look Just right then AGHHHHHHH someone had that name. Reworked name and still it was used. Sometimes it would take more time getting a name then it was getting a look.

There were many Alts I created that sat in the server not being played. So I'm guilty of hogging a name, but I so didn't want to delete that Alt!

Having the @Global name system would be best. Is it perfect no but it's better then XXHERODUDEXX.

What's wrong with oOStaticOo? It's the way I've always made sure I've gotten the name I wanted and has given all my friends the capability of exactly knowing it's me! lol. Granted there were some characters I had that didn't have the oO......Oo on it, but it's my signature naming name. :-)

COH had to check if your name

COH had to check if your name wasalready being used with global@name that problem is solved. Also, the channels would use your global in COH. That made it weird when one name advertised the pug and a different name did the inviting. So, global@name it is then.

One request I would like to

One request I would like to make of the devs: whatever way you go with the naming scheme, please give us the option CoX had to keep notes on a player. I found that really useful in case I couldn't quite remember whether I teamed with that person many moons ago and what that experience was like.

I dont think the names should

I dont think the names should be Capitalization sensitive but I do want the ability to edit the way the letters are viewed and the ability to use special characters like Δ.

.. The fewer XxXOver1ordXxX I see the happier I will be. I want to interact with the people in the game and keep this game social but seeing things like that are difficult for me to interact with.

I remember on the Triumph

I remember on the Triumph server there used to be a group called "The Parallel Illusion" which had numerous members and alts all of whom had what looked like the same name, because the font CoH used made the numeral 1 look a lot like uppercase letter I AND the lowercase letter "L", so you could substitute "1" for either of those letters and make what looked liek the same name but technically wasn't. I thought that was clever.

It was annoying as hell though when it came to petitioning players though (especially if it was about a global name system), especially the similarity between the upper case I and lower case l (and yes, I did use two different letters there).

I know of a player who "avoided" several petitions because they were for the "wrong global name", until someone actually dug through chat logs to find the *true* spelling of it.

Allowing special characters runs you into the problem of someone else having to type the characters for some actions; in SWTOR I run across people who've used special characters to get around the name filters, such as a Smuggler character named 'Hān Sòló'. And if the game supports Unicode, the way CoH did (I had a number of characters with Russian background for whom I'd built character-appropriate chat binds -- things like 'Да.', 'Нет.', and 'Готовый!' for common responses), allowing it in character names, while it would increase the range of available names, would add confusion from not being able to tell in chat which of the several dozen Unicode character sets that particular 'e' came from, or the difficulties in typing the character name to send an invite to 'Теневой Огонь' or 'Стальная Дева' (Tenevoy Ogon and Stalnaya Deva, two of my CoH characters).

I'm often amazed in MMOs to see to what creative lengths people will go to produce a singularly uncreative result.

I once created a character

I once created a character who had a special character in his name. One day I wanted to send mail to that character. Since then I've never used special characters for my character names. So much simpler to take an extra minute or two to come up with a halfway decent name that I can remember how to type.

I have a character in Neverwinter called Téli Ének (Winter Song in Hungarian). It's perfectly easy to handle as you can copy the name to the clipboard in a program where it's easy to type, and then paste it into NW.

Yeah, I have a text file of those unusual names. Another thing I make sure of is that, at least my first initial is a plain character - then I can pick the name off my friends list, or Guild list.

I think they did in the chat window and maybe the character background screen.

/em left finger touching nose, right finger pointing at Cinnder

I can understand someone wanting a particular name, I guess. I always thought of it as a challenge to my creativity. For instance, "Mayan Warbird" (pictured left) was probably my fifth or sixth try after "Thunderbird." As it turned out, the new name inspired a much more unique and interesting backstory. ::shrug:: I was initially put off by the Champions "Name@global" convention, but I've gotten used to it. Sooo....whatever. As long as we can use spaces...

I'm surprised you didn't branch out a little with some research. The Lakota name for the Thunderbird was 'Wakiya', other plains tribes named it 'Wakinyan' (Wakinyan Tanka, the Great Thunderbird); the Nootka called it Kw-Uhnx-Wa, and the Objibwa name for a thunderbird that was closely associated with thunder was 'Animiki'.

Dipping into other languages expands the ranges of names you can use, often when a particular name in English is already taken. After I found that CoH chat supported Unicode, I created a number of characters with Russian/Soviet backgrounds using transliterated Russian names -- Tenevoy Ogon ('Shadow Fire'), a Fire/Dark Corruptor, Stalnaya Deva ('Steel Maiden'), a DB/WP Scrapper, and Zabastovka Molniy ('Lightning Strike'), a TW/EA Tanker, for example.

Better than that; CoX supported Unicode, so that I was able to, with the characters I created with Russian backgrounds (names taken from Russian being easy to get) I could create chat binds for common words or phrases -- Yes (Да), No (Нет), Help! (Помощь!), Ready! (Готовый!), along with other stock comments. One character that I'd made using the 'chitin' pieces colored to look like chitin plates over exposed muscle tissue, had a chat bind to reply to people complimenting her on her costume -- (in Russian) "This isn't a costume; this is my body -- a 'gift' of 'glorious Soviet technology'." (she had some issues about her origin).

They don't seem to allow hyphens in DCUO names and that's... bananas for a Superhero game.

May I put in a request to allow more than two marks of punctuation in a name?
In CoH, you got one of a comma, apostrophe, and period, and this felt a bit limiting.
For example,
K.R. Wilson
Hell's Legion Jr.
Kenny, Larry, and John
Mr. Bot's Dog

Just as to not limit names a bit, or reach whatever the character limit is. Maybe whole-name acronyms like...
S.M.A.R.T.
M.O.D.O.K
A.E.G.I.S
K.I.L.L.B.O.T.
...could be a little much, but I can't really see a reason against it other that inconveniencing those who have to type such names in team invites and such.

To respond to the more special characters like í,é, §,â,ä,â,à,É,å,ç,ë,,ï,ì,ÿ,ó,ú,ø,Ú, and greek letters, there could be a separate virtual keyboard for such special characters. Since team invites would be based on the global name system, maybe a character could only have one of Bon Garcon and Bon Garçon of characters, the system could treat ç and c equivalently in global names.

Lately games have allowed you to highlight or right-click player-names in the chat-window to invite, so that is not as much of an issue as it used to be in MMO's.

Don'tcha miss seeing those spam'in players who had names such as "Illiliilliililiiliiu"? The ones you used to have to type out perfectly in order to place them on your ignore list? (grins)

I just recently jumped onto

I just recently jumped onto FF14 with my partner as a friend has been getting into it a lot of late.
He wanted us to join his (I forget the name of it but Ill use this as a place holder) league. In order to do so he had to bring his character to us in game and have us right-click his character to request an invite. Now I get the RP aspect of this (to an extent as it is a 'medieval' setting) but in a modern setting this should be avoided. There is no reason why I cant invite people to join my league/group/coalition/etc even if they are across the globe (or even in space - hint hint).

I like the right-click > Invite option but it should be an option. Using /Invite %name% should also be as option as well as maybe a Team window 'Invite' button for those that don't like using commands.

My final point was that in /invite %name% instances, Biére Boy and Biere Boy would be identical, and the same goes for character selection purposes.
