Musings of a badge addict.

I've done some pondering on various badge matters and have a few ideas:

Badges tracked per account, not per character

This doesn't have to be 100 percent one way or the other. It's just that there were some badges that I felt would be more suited to being assigned and track on a per account basis rather than a per character basis.

The meta-game badges, the grindy badges, time-limited badges (which I hated), and the like.

Don't tell me that the "Heal Eleventy Bajillion Damage" and their ilk wouldn't have been much more pleasant if they were being tracked per character rather than account wide. Especially when some characters aren't exactly easily able to attain some of the requirements. I'll never heal a millions of points of damage with just my one self-heal on a Brute, and I'll never be able to soak millions of points of damage on my Mastermind.

Maybe having some badges working more like modern Achievement systems. "You have defeated 1,000 bears, here is your "I hate bears" achievement and badge." "You have slaughtered bears and retrieved 100 bear asses, here is your "Bear Buns" achievement and badge." "You have defeated the evil Ronaldo McDonaldo and stopped him from dropping tons of bear bottoms into the city's water supply throughout this storyline, have a badgechievement." etc etc.

No More Memory Hole

I joined City of Heroes just before the CoV launch, so there were badges that I could never get simply because I hadn't heard of the game before then.

Similarly, if I found my Spines/Regen Scrapper to be absolutely and utterly horrible to play, but latched on to a /Shield scrapper instead, there were badges forever lost to me. I don't mind having to collect defeat badges all over again, but I feel that there ought to be a way to always get a badge from a bygone era (or an equivalent copy, like how you could never have more than one Arachnos Patron badge). Like a "Reminiscing of Years Past" badge that could be unlocked in some way during the time when the yearly anniversary badges would be handed out or something.

It also bugged me that there was a badge/item/power that I was never able to get, despite having purchased 3 CoH collector's editions (all of which turned out to have used codes.) Limited edition RL goods make VK's sad.

I've chimed in before on my opinion on this. I am very much in favor of account wide achievements. The only reason I can see to not have a badge tracked by account is if it: 1) unlocks a mission path, or 2) unlocks a bonus/power. But even with that, I'd still rather have every badge be account wide.

I recall, on the old forums, a dev comment (that might have been relayed second-hand from Zwillinger) to the effect of "No one should expect to get all the badges; it's not set up that way." I can see account-wide for many, many things. Achievement (where you're collecting the defeats of 10,000 Rikti Monkeys, or healing for 10 million points); Event (anniversary badges, yes -- just because I made a character 5 years after launch, that character doesn't have access to the 1,2,3, or 4 years badges? Why?), and suchlike.

What badges, if any, should be tied to that character and only that character? Obviously, any badge that either confers actual in-game benefits or contributes to such (Atlas Medallion) should be per character. Perhaps completion of Task Forces or ITF as well?

I think that this might be a bit fuzzy. For instance, the accumulation of all of the crafting badges granted the portable crafting table. Most of the collections of badges that gave a temp power were accumulations of smaller otherwise meaningless badges like exploration badges. At what point do you say that you have to collect that badge with every character?

Unfortunately on the subject

Unfortunately on the subject of limited time, unobtainable if you didn't know about them soon enough badges, it looks like the devs have already committed to at least one. The reward for donating $25 (or more) to the Kickstarter includes a "Kickstarter only badge and title for our founding heroes ( and villains! )". So someone could potentially play the game through beta, pick it up on launch, and STILL be locked out of at least one badge.

Honestly I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Lets also not make the assumption that badges will grant any powers. Or that they are even called badges, I really prefer achievements.

Except I was two away from having them all. One was bugged (8 yr badge) and the other was historically unattainable (Passport), but, the devs promised to bring that into the game some other way. So, if they fixed the one badge and added Passport elsewhere as they said, I would have had 'em all. Then my life would have been complete. The universe would pass quietly from existence....

I joined after CoV dropped so

I joined after CoV dropped so there were several historically I couldn't get such as the x year anniversary badges and others that there wasn't enough time left in the universe to get - such as the heal 1 billion points, if I'd healed a few points a week for the last 5 years this would have come my way but outside of a heal farm it wasn't going to by the time I joined and then got interested in badging.

Having said that.. I'm more than happy with my badging position and as it was such a teensy part of the game I don't think it's worth getting tied up over. The mix of account and personal badges was fine in CoX and I hope the same thing comes through in CoT, my main badger was just that, my scrappers and stalkers just liked eating souls and couldn't care less about badges, my brutes just wanted any power bonuses the game offered.

It wouldn't make much sense for the longevity of the game to give all my 50 alts across 4 servers (and don't forget red, blue and gold sides) the same badges all the time, I liked going for different things on different characters and then making sure I got it on my main. The first person to get all the badges on Freedom would have been #1 on every server if the badges were all account wide, makes no sense, if you want the tf badges on your Justice toon, run on Justice. Plus it would make no sense for my new level 1 to suddenly have all these level 50 bonuses unlocked because I'd got them on another toon.

So my vote is to keep the mix that CoX had unless someone can really come up with something that was broken in some kind of mad way.

If people won't pay enough to finance its creation, it is not worth creating.

I vote for a mix as well. One-time, limited window badges, like the yearly anniversary badges ought to be account-wide, while others, such as "Do X amount of fire damage" or "Defeat 100 of Doctor Tyche's robotic assassins" should be character-based.

I'm actually disappointed they've already set the precedent of having a permanently exclusive badge that you can only get if you do something roughly two years BEFORE the game even starts. That's clearly not quite as bad as Bug Hunter was, but it's fairly close as far as I'm concerned. :(

I sincerely hope the Devs of CoT will strongly reconsider including any other permanently exclusive badges in this game. It was a major point of contention/angst in the CoH badging community and I considered those badges to be one of the most easily-avoidable failures of the badge system in general. I knew people who became disillusioned with CoH and quit playing pretty much for this one reason alone.

Note to the Devs: Just say no to permanently exclusive badges unless you want permanently pissed off players. They simply aren't worth it.

There are ways to have

There are ways to have exclusive badges without altering the badge count race.

E.g., We can have a badge for every new character that starts the game called 'Starter.' But for those who contributed to the KS, it will be called 'Kickstarter'. Now, that's not determined yet, but we do have badge hounds on the staff that know all about 'gotta collect them all' and 'whose got the most.'
