I loved the fake restaurants in CoH and wished I could go inside them. It would have been cool if each fast food place could sell you a different type of inspiration or something.

I always wished it was possible to go inside more of the buildings in Coh, whether there was specific stuff in there to do or not. Of course, random items of interest inside of random buildings could promote exploration.
Or it would i guess at least for the first play-through.
...What if certain Exploration Badges spawned differently for each toon you rolled, within a certain radius. You would have to hunt for it each time you made a new toon if you wanted the badge.
Eh, just a thought.
I always liked the idea of being able to go in and through buildings too, either as short cuts, exploration, chase or to pull/ambush. Having the ability to smash through windows and doors would also be great. However, it's so much extra demand on design that it's probably unrealistic.
day one vet
Heh ... can you imagine having a World Event where cellphone service becomes unavailable and Players need to start using public phones to call NPCs (or *gasp* travel to them!)? Just the thought of lines of Players forming at a public phone (because only one Player can use it at a time) just seems inherently hilarious to me ... kind of like having bus stops and no buses.

LOL, actually it is funny, I have seen that happen in MMOs where you had a line of 20 players waiting inline to click something.
NPC Contact: "Oh and $Character, just be aware that there's no cell phone reception in Dark Astoria (go figure...), Crey's Folly (guess why), Eden (surprise!), The Hive (no really!) or the Rikti War Zone (whodathunkit?). However, cell phone service in the Shadow Shard often has better uptime than anywhere in Paragon City! No, I don't get it either..."

Danged Sprint coverage
I don't get mad, I restructure the laws of quantum physics and resolve the situation with temporal engineering.
From the start of the project it's always been a goal to have "RP spots" or more immersive city locales. I can't promise that that will happen with the workload we're facing, but it has been discussed.
You know we're going to be grateful for whatever you can do.
... for about half an hour, then the massive complaint threads will start rolling in.
No matter what you do.
Cheers. ^_^;

Half an hour?!
I think you're being way to generous! :p
This sounds really interesting!
One request: could chairs allow us to sit by clicking on them instead of having to stand on them and then /emote sit (and then have to stand up again, adjust position, /emote sit again, repeat...) please?
Spurn all ye kindle.
What defines an RP spot though?
An RP spot is any place that is suitable for the RP the people want or need to have.
This can be an apartment building, a café, a book shop, a garage, a rooftop, a suburban street, a school playground, etc., etc., etc.
In other words, just about anything one can think of or would expect to find in a (fictional) city.
As the voice said, "If you build it, they will come."

Unfortunately I am not on the Tech side of things, but I'll inquire about that.
Nah, the first half hour will be the "Can't login to server" thread exploding.

The reason why I ask is because as you have shown, it is *anything*. There is nothing "special" about an RP spot in my eyes.
One of the venues that RP happened in CoX on the Union server was "under Galaxy Girl". Yep, a *statue*. It was easy to get to, was one of the starting zones (before the freedom revamp), and had nothing stopping a level 1 character to get to.
But it was *nothing* special... wasn't placed by the developers as a specific RP spot. But look at a *lot* of places in CoX that *could* be used. How many of them were *actually* used.
The Monkey bar in sharkshead, the Cryptic lounge, the AE lounges, Giza Pyramid (just been shouted this)....
Pocket D? Was that designed as a RP spot? Or did it just become one due to how easy it was to get to?
These are area's that were quite possibly *designed* to be RP spots, but just never took off (from what I can tell on my server).
That's the crux of it. They key is to have loads of interesting areas. Trying to create some kind of RP 'hot spot' is hubris. The players will decide what they like. And it might just be that fire hydrant with the funny graffiti on the corner of Third and Nowhere.

Well, nothing "special" in the way of the devs explicitly setting out to create a designated RP spot. However, there are several characteristics that can make an area conducive to RP, such as...
So maybe the main goal shouldn't be "create more RP areas" as much as "don't make every part of the map a high-traffic area, and don't neglect the design of the low-traffic areas."
Both? It started out as Paragon Dance Party, which was a sometimes-used RP spot but mostly got used as a transit route between zones. Then it got revamped into a proper zone complete with contacts, doors, and missions. It also was one of the first zones where heroes and villains could meet in a non-combat setting.

Qualities of an RP Location:

Easy Access (so easy even a n00b can do it!)

Easily Identified Location (Atlas Statue, Galaxy Girl Statue, etc.)

Lack of PvE "distractions" (meaning no Foe NPC spawns, patrols or harassments)

Lack of "World Noise" (meaning few if any looping sounds caused by the environment, including door sound FX due to high traffic)

Open Space (to accommodate anywhere from 2 to 50 people)

Some separation from NPC Services (vendors, trainers, etc.)

Unique Ambiance
That pretty much covers it for me. Things like Powers Suppression essentially qualifies as a bonus.

RP locations can also be micro-locations that may only fit a few people. The goal, in regards to the OP, is to provide non-essential but immersive locations throughout the zones - things that help make the city feel like more of a real place.
Great list, Redlynne.
