Mission/Raid/TF Settings

I couldn't find a thread for this subject so I figured I'd make one. If there is, I'll remove this one.

I recently watched a documentary on nuclear submarines. If I was smarter I would link a picture but I can't seem to figure out how to do that. Anyway, google the 'Typhoon' class nuclear submarine. They are MASSIVE and easily big enough to be considered for a mission or even raid setting. Multiple floors, over 570ft long and 75 feet wide. I'm thinking this would be a cool setting for the end of a story arc where the final, final boss is. You'd have to infiltrate the enemies ranks to get aboard or maybe sneak on board while it is docked.

I think the team could make a pretty amazing recreation of this kind of submarine and release in an expansion in a year or two after release. There are plenty of blueprints and videos on google where you get inside video all around the sub.

So, there are a lot of really basic, obvious mission settings like in a park, in a building, down at the docks, etc. What are some more interesting settings that you'd like to play in? Let's give the devs some unique ideas that they could consider in...years...

Compulsively clicking the refresh button until the next update.

Type [ img]www.url.com[ /img] for image linking. If you use Imgur, there's actually a copy link that does the formatting for you. If you don't use Imgur and just have the URL, remove the spaces in the [ brackets ] for this formatting to work.

A theme park.

A theme park.
Cruise ship.
Mooooooon!
Inside a giant robot.
Shrunken down inside an NPC.

"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."

Also don’t forget to change text format from plain text to New BBCode.

It's funny you mentioned nuclear submarines - I have an interesting indirect relationship with them. It turns out my previous program manager was a retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander who served most of his career on subs. So naturally many of the people he hired in the last few years also happened to be 20+ year ex-sub guys. There are a lot of vets in my line of work so that part's not too weird - the slightly unusual part now is how many of them are skewing towards specifically being ex-sub guys.

Anyway the point I'm getting to is that based on everything these guys have talked about over the last few years I probably know just about as much as a civilian can know about the day-to-day workings of at least 6 or 7 of our currently active nuclear boats in the US Navy. Oh, the stories I could tell both good and bad - keep in mind my job requires a clearance so my co-workers have been able to tell me classified things you won't usually learn on a standard wiki page. ;)

While I do like the general idea of having a nuclear submarine serve as a location for a mission/raid in CoT it turns out it would have to be an incredibly "stylized" and unrealistically gigantic version of a submarine like area. The reason I say this is that even in modern subs many of the passageways are fairly small/narrow and would not be easy to move around in if they were "translated" into the standard MMO environment. Running around on a real life sized sub while engaging in superhero-styled combat with multiple teammates and enemies would otherwise be a virtual nightmare in a MMO.

But sure that kind of setting always reminds me of the classic 60s-70s era James Bond movies so it's a good idea regardless. I know "Moonraker" was usually considered one of the absolute cheesiest Bond movies but I absolutely loved the space combat scenes at the end of that movie. ;)

Agreed. For an MMO they would definitely need to make it roomier for all the combat and movement. Considering how big the Typhoon class sub is IRL I personally wouldn't have a problem with an MMO, especially in the superhero setting, having an unrealistically large sub. Super beings require super vehicles, right? XD I mean, IRL if we had the need and/or really wanted to, we could build the equivelant of a submarine carrier, able to transport vehicles and platoons of soldiers. Its not realistic, but we could do it with enough money. So in a superhero setting it is completely plausible.

I just think that setting in the right story arc could be a very fun setting for a final boss.

Sure like I implied there's absolutely no reason why we couldn't, in a superhero setting, have some kind of crazy-huge "James Bond villain" type submarine to run around and fight in.

As for the idea of something like a "submarine aircraft carrier" being unrealistic goes there were actually a good number of [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_aircraft_carrier]real life examples[/url] of such things. The real life versions usually only managed to carry 1 recon plane but the [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-400-class_submarine]Japanese managed to build a few subs in WWII[/url] that could carry up to 3 attack-capable seaplanes. Based on the fact that these things actually existed IRL there's no good excuse not to get "slightly grandiose" versions in CoT. ;)

on the same running topic, a

on the same running topic, a period piece aboard the Nautilus would be fun too, with all the period costumes, and steampunk technology

Just wanted to add that me

Just wanted to add that me dad was a CPO in the Navy, serving for years as a machinist’s mate on nuclear submarines. I’ve been on them many times (as a kid visiting my dad’s boat and as an adult when I worked as a Naval contractor). These were Trident class subs.

My mom also worked for many years at the Trident Refit Facility at a sub base and retired a couple years ago.

So I have a few ties to them too. :)

Thank your parents for their service. :)

Like I implied almost everyone I currently work with now is a vet. I think we have just about every service covered, even the Coast Guard. I've never technically been in the service myself but I've worked most of my 25+ year career on several different Air Force related programs reporting directly to various officers in charge so between that and the fact that I've spent at least a couple of years worth of my life working on several USNS ships at sea I consider myself a "vet by association". ;)

It's not very unique but I

It's not very unique but I quite enjoy the idea of the Supervillain Secret Island Lair complete with jungle and massive volcano. Rewatching Incredibles when looking for ideas for designs really gives you an appreciation for just how [i]BIG[/i] Syndrome's entire facility is.

[B]Revenge is motivation enough. At least it's honest...[/B]
