So I was thinking how, in just about every game, CoH included, in a mission box dialogue with an NPC, you could choose a response in one of two ways.
1) You clicked on one of two or more actual lines of dialogue. More choices were great but you were still having words put in your mouth
2) You clicked on one or more choices that were just generic representations of the idea. For example, to kill a particular enemy or not. Doesn't put words in your mouth, but it's generic.
It occurred to me that putting a text box field in there wouldn't be all that hard. As I envision it, on one side you'd have the choices, as clickables like always, but this time always just the labels for the choice - yes or no, 'nice guy refusal' 'bad guy refusal' 'nice guy accept' 'nasty guy accept' - you get the idea. These have always stacked vertically anyway. So there's room, on the other side, for a text box field.
You can ignore it of course, the click side is what triggers all the important stuff. But if you choose to use the text box, your character will say whatever you put in it when you click an option. So when you click 'kill him' your character could say, in a speech bubble, anything from 'oh, it's waaaay too late to ask for mercy now' to 'pray to your gods, mortal, for you'll soon be judged by them'. Should be a simple option to add, but it would be a great concept/RP boost.

Oh I can think of a lot of potential abuse issues with this... In order for something like this to be a viable option for a Teen rated game, I see some programming requirements beyond a simple text window needing to be done.
This is not to say I don't like the idea, I just think some limitations will need to be in place to prevent offensive abuse of this option.

That's generally not much of a concern. Any game with online content will typically have a disclaimer to that effect. For example, from the ESRB rating for World of Warcraft (rated Teen):
Also, if this is enough to get under someone's skin then any game with a mission architect must be their worst nightmare.

Yeah, the problem with saying this opens up abuse is, then so does the ENTIRE CHAT SYSTEM. This doesn't empower the player to do anything he can't do anytime, anywhere, just standing in the game and shouting. It's not like the text wouldn't go through the same filters on the way to the speech bubble.
In fact, he could do the same thing manually, by hitting the option, then letting his character stand around while he types in some RP chat. But this way is much smoother and more immersive.
