I just want to say, I hope MWM sees what other companies are doing (wrong) and learns from it.
I'm not going to name names, but there's another superhero MMO right now, changing the way their subscription model works.
Part of it, they're taking long standing features of subscriptions- which includes previously purchased Lifetime subscriptions, calling them bugs, and removing them.
Not, "We don't want to offer this perk anymore, it's costing too much.", but instead "That perk you've had for the last 5 years? Yeah, actually it was a bug. We're fixing it now."
That's a great example of what not to do.

The unnamed MMO is stating that a particular perk included with a lifetime subscription was a bug and never intended, and that bug is fixed. The bug in question being a new character slot opening up every time an existing character hits max level.
People have provided screenshots showing that the “bug” was an advertised feature the company was using to sell the lifetime subscription. So they’re lying to try to get people to accept a feature being taken away.
Given that MWM has stated that reaching max level will open a new slot regardless of whether one has a subscription makes me think they will avoid this particular problem at least.
Spurn all ye kindle.
It wasn’t even based on lifetime. My regular sub which lasted 2 years also gained said character slots.
MWM doesn’t really have to learn from this much like how most people don’t have to learn fire shouldn’t be bathed in.

Was this CO? I know CO had lifetime subs (have one) and that in fact, that was part of the perks of being subbed which LT sub still got. I ask, because I don't know the reason for saying unnamed MMO :p
I've also quit leveling new characters in CO too, so less of a matter, however, agreed such things are terrible. Which, when CO came out and I got the LT sub, I knew CO doing LT subs was the worst thing that a MMO could ever do.
I'm not going to wait for max level for character slots. I'm hitting the company store first day.

Yeah it’s CO. I don’t know why it needed to be unnamed either. We talk about other MMOs all the time. It’s just that if someone whispers to me I whisper back even if I don’t know why we’re whispering. :P
But basically the deal is this...
In CO, one of the perks of a subscription (lifetime or paying a monthly fee) was that you could get a new character slot every time you maxed out a level.
Cryptic Studios is now claiming that was a “bug” and that the “bug” was fixed. As compensation they’re making it cheaper to buy a new slot (for everyone). But they removed the language on their site that advertised the feature and are pretending that it was never intended.
Of course, we have the Internet Archive so their ruse is pretty clumsy.
Here’s the discussion about it on the Arc Games forums:
https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/championsonline#/discussion/1211379/r...
The release note for the “bug fix” states:
”Addressed a bug where Lifetime and subscribed accounts continued to get free character slots for every character they got to 40. It was intended that players were able to receive 1 extra slot for the first character they got to 40, but not any more after.”
Which is a lie. As you see in this screenshot:

”The number of character slots available to you by default. Lifetime subscribers receive an additional eight slots. You also receive an additional slot for each character that reaches level 40, and as a 200-day Veteran Reward. You can purchase more characters slots in the C-Store.”
(Bolding mine.) This particular chart still exists but they just happened to remove the bit about extra character slots to pretend it was never there.
If you are taking away a benefit just admit it. Apologize, explain why it’s necessary (my guess is that having hundreds of idle characters per player eats up their server space) and maybe offer some bonus for compensation. But don’t lie and pretend a feature you advertised to sell subscriptions was never intended.
Every time I think something is common sense, someone comes along and shows that it isn't.
It's never a bad idea to learn from the actions of others, good or bad.

Not to defend a company or anything but
"Addressed a bug where Lifetime and subscribed accounts continued to get free character slots for every character they got to 40."
Lifetime -and- subscribed accounts.
"Lifetime subscribers receive an additional eight slots. You also receive an additional slot for each character that reaches level 40"
Could the intent have been that this was only supposed to be for lifetime subscribers? And that merely being a subscriber shouldn't have gotten you access to the extra characters at 40 but some bug allowed it?
I don't ever recall getting additional slots when I hit 40, I had subbed to the game numerous times. But I could be mistaken.
But also if this is the case then they took forever to notice and fix it.
Edit: Nevermind reread the posts and the problem they have is with "each', not what I postulated.
My bad.

"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."
Really, it would've been an easy fix for them.
"Hey. We needed a new way to make money, because we were dumb to offer LT subs." (As a LT Sub to CO, I knew the deal was good deal, any MMO who offers this deal is giving you a good deal, if the game lasts as longs as the cost divided by 15 months) "So, we're taking that away, but we'll add something."
In this case, I would've suggested something akin to Extra Free Monthly Coins or even 10 Free Keys a month for their loot boxes. The odds are crap already. So they're not losing much on that deal.
