I read update 172 just now. And, to be honest, I'm really not sure what to think about it.
I realize that when I put in my funds to show my support, I wasn't going to have any control. After all, I'm not the guy doing the work, and well, from what I understand, nobody's getting paid.
At the same time, I did and do expect progress - which I guess, all things considered, has been made. Not bad for a payroll budget that is supposedly zero.
But, I saw an actual physical ...half a mannequin, I guess, with part of some costume on it.
Like I said, I'm not sure what to think about it. I certainly don't think Cryptic or Paragon Studios made real costumes for Statesman and the rest. Heck, maybe they did, I really don't know.
Again - not sure what to think - but who cares about this stuff? It has been ...3 years? It seems as if an alpha is really close, maybe even within the year. My concern is that I'll have to upgrade my system again by the time this game comes out. From i3, to i5 and now i7 - I'll probably have to wait until the next wave of technology comes out by the time this game gets going.
I do understand that you folks are working for nothing. But, I did pay to support this effort - and well, I am feeling like the time is being spent in ways that aren't really helping the progress of the game.
Maybe I'm ignorant and short-sighted. But I'm really feeling poorly about this effort. Yet, I don't have any real right to because folks are volunteering. I certainly can't expect anyone not being paid to do my bidding. But, come on - let's get this game going!

Post this in the update discussion thread. That's what it's for you know.
Also, I was a little disapointed by this update too, but that doesn't mean I don't realize they're still working on the thing. The costume is a side project.
There is no "update" discussion thread. There's a kickstarter discussion - but neither my comment, nor the recent Kickstarter update has anything to do with the kickstart funding. So, it goes here.

I think a real costume is a great marketting tool. More money in, more money to hire artists and programmers, better game ;)

I just hope the fact that they now have a costume means that they'll deploy said costume, with a person wearing it, at a convention, some time very soon. I've asked on various occasions about conventions, and the response was usually, "When we have something to show/sell to people, i.e. the beta, we'll be there." I can't see making a costume like this and just keeping it in their closet, so I take the costume's existence, and the fact that it has been made recently, as a sign that they'll actually need it some time soon, and that excites me.
If, on the other hand, this was just one person's pet project in their spare spare time, and thew didn't use MWM Kickstarter monies to make it, then good for them, but that would be a bit of a letdown for me if it means no official CoT con presence for like 2 years.

The costume is indeed for conventions: powerful tool for publicity later. It was, as stated, a side project, with most of the work being done by people not involved in creating the game: in short, making the costume had no impact on game progress whatsoever. People related oversaw it, but Terwyn/DCJames is our business manager, not a producer, and the CAD designer is not a dev with us at all.

Ok, so, here's my thinking. If I'm wrong--or if I'm at any point I'm just being a weenie--let me know :).
#1. Yes, this whole discussion should have been posted on the "Discussion Update" thread. But it wasn't, so here's what else I think...
#2. This side project is awesome and I'm glad MWM is involved.
#3. However, since this was a side project that had no impact on the game progress whatsoever, this is not actually an update on the game.
It seems to me this project--awesome as it is--should have been a separate special announcement, and then there should have been the regular scheduled update on the game.
This is meant as constructive criticism, and if it isn't in fact constructive, I regret putting it forth. I am excited about MWM, CoT, and all of the progress we've seen lately.

Empyrean's third point is basically why the update disappointed me, so I agree with them. The costume is neat and it's good to have it for marketing later, but it doesn't have anything to do with the game directly like the other updates.
