Kickstarter Landmarks

Hey you lucky devils. If your amazing base is being built by Missing Worlds Media for City of Titans them I'd love to hear about it!

How was your experience working with MWM?
What unique features are you must excited about?
Do you know which district in Titan City you want to be located in? Even if it's a district post launch?
Are you making a haven for heroes or a den of the underbelly?
Do you plan for public or private access?

- -
First up, Mischief's Ascent
Anyone here the owner? What can you tell us about your beautiful concept art?

I donated at least enough to

I donated at least enough to the Kickstarter to be getting a Mogul/All Your Base combo among the other various things I opted for. I remember filling out a brief description of what I wanted for it in an email many months ago, but I've heard nothing back about it recently one way or the other.

To be honest I kept my submission for this relatively generic and (from an artist's point of view) probably not too hard/convoluted to do. Back in CoH I played almost as many "villains" as I did "heroes" so I didn't really want to lock my Mogul into being too obviously meant for only one side or the other. By keeping my idea simple enough I think I can get "reuse" out of it for pretty much all of my CoT alts.

As far as which district it'll be in I wasn't really given a specific choice - or to be more precise I didn't really specify that I wanted it to be in any given place. Based on what I asked for it'll more than likely have to be in some high-rise/downtown area because it just would look totally out-of-place anywhere else. Beyond that I really didn't have any preference not knowing any real details about the final zone maps anyway.

I got the Reg Lethal Weapon

I got the Reg Lethal Weapon as well as the Mogul and I have only gotten a survey for the building. I asked for a building similar to the Phoenix Towers that are being built in China.

With my story line the building would be a tribute to the past with a path to a shrine in the back(think Mulan) but looking forward to the future!

I have not heard anything back about any specifics like Lothic but I am assuming if the building can be made it would probably be put in Lotus Hills

I don't remember where but I literally just saw a Dev post what all the areas will be. I'll see if I can find it again

I had considered going with Mogul but decided to go with.. other things. Besides what I wanted would have required a small personal island and that seemed like too much for the team to me. Better to just say it exists somewhere offshore.

I went for Mogul and also remember filling out a survey with three options lo these many moons ago. My primary choice was a private school building, so we'll see what happens.

I am not in the path of the

I am not in the path of the mogul work being done, but I know it is being done. Each mogul will have a one on one with the concept artist assigned to them. As soon as they get to your name they will get with you to hammer out any details involved with your vision. The process does take more time than just going by what you've already told us, but it makes each one more special as well as helps it fit into the overall world of Titan City.

If I remember correctly there were 100 moguls. That is a large chunk of Titan real estate devoted solely to you guys! I don't think any other game has had the chance to do something this big with it's players. We love it!

I agree it's an ambitious idea to allow that many in-game locations be "co-designed" by players and I hope it all works out well.

Like Kiyori Anoyui the idea for my Mogul is based on a real life building - the Burj Khalifa.

I was lucky enough to see it in real life back when it was like 90% complete and if my business travels take me back to Dubai again I hope to get a chance to take the visitor tour they offer. To give an idea of its overall scale here's a cool pic of what it might look like if it were magically moved to New York City:

There are probably thousands of pictures of it online so I figured that would make it that much easier for the MWM artists to come up with their own in-game version of it. I've asked for a slightly different top to make mine different from the "real" one, but I'm actually open to the idea for further tweaks if there's any concern about copying a real life building too closely - I honestly don't know if there could be any kind of "IP infringement" type issues related to that.

Either way I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else came up with and obviously the actual game itself.

To be honest (and any Red Name feel free to jump in on this at any time) I have always suspected that once the game is up and running that they might once again offer something like a Mogul or the other "player designed" items (like weapons, chest logos, costume textures, etc.) in the game's cash shop.

These things would likely be just as expensive as they were for the Kickstarter and they would have to go though the same process of getting a game artist to work on the submission and eventually get it uploaded to the game. These would still be special unique items and carry with them the same "one year exclusive" deals the Kickstarter offers did.

The main reason why I think the Devs are going to be open to the idea of letting people buy customized things after launch (and not limit them just to the Kickstarter) is that it seems like it would be an amazing long-term money maker for them. They could accept as many submissions as they wanted based on the time they have to work on them and it would allow people to save up for something really special. It seems like a win-win for everyone.

Another way to think of it is this: Why bother to open the door on the "player customizable content" idea just for the Kickstarter and then never do it again? People asked for this kind of thing back in CoH for years - it would seem almost cruel not to continue the idea once they decided to allow for it.

Time will tell of course but let's just say I will be really surprised if they don't offer post-launch customization deals similar to what they offered for the Kickstarter.

hmm.. what sort of item? If its not a building, make it a few weeks, so it might actually sell better after a few people point it out on you as you troll in the towns park area. ;)

As I understood how the Kickstarter items worked you can "gift" those special items as you see fit. Also some people have reportedly elected to forego their period of exclusivity and let their Kickstarter items become "public domain" instantly.

As far as a "full year" thing goes that's the kind of detail that might change once things are up and running. Maybe the post-launch customizable items will only be exclusive for say a month (and consequently cost much less than the Kickstarter versions). I'm not really as concerned about that as being able to get customizable things after launch in the first place. ;)

That makes perfect sense for the Moguls. In addition to directly selling those "opportunities" you might be able to do other things as well like make one of them be a prize in a contest or some such. There's really all sorts of things that could be done with these.

But in addition to the Moguls I would think it'd be great if you could eventually allow for a post-launch system of submissions to get customized costume items, weapons, etc. made. These could follow in the footsteps of what you've begun in the Kickstarter and be handled in whatever manner makes the most sense for the time and effort available from the art Devs.

While I do believe they should continue the character created content, it would be cool to have a little plaque inside all of the original kickstarted buildings or something of that nature just like the K tags on the forums.

If they plan to do it all by zones (as Doctor Tyche implied) it sort of sounds like the Moguls that appear in any of the launch day zones will ONLY ever be Kickstarter ones and Moguls that appear in any post launch day zone will ONLY ever be non-Kickstarter ones. Basically we'll already be segregated by zones so there may technically be no real need for "Kickstarter plaques" to identify which is which.

Besides if it turns out that the post Kickstarter Moguls cost future players the same amount as the Kickstarter ones did (as I suggested) then I have no real need to have my building specially "labeled" as a Kickstarter or otherwise. To take it one step further the term "Kickstarter" only has meaning to players in the real world anyway so why would that word appear on a building in a game? What meaning does the word "Kickstarter" have to the average NPC citizen walking down the street?

The "K tags" in the forums make sense because we are future players (real people) of a game talking on a forum. But to be perfectly honest the idea of "K badges" inside the game or any kind of identification as a "Kickstarter" inside the game is going to seem really weird to me (see explanations about Breaking the Fourth Wall) but I think that ship might have already sailed so I'm going to have to put up with it.

I was a big time CoH badge hunter myself so if they do decide to have a badge/achievement for something like this in CoT I'll probably get it. I'm just respectfully saying I hope this doesn't happen. We're already going to have plenty of "Geocachers" (the Kickstarter people who opted to get their own customized Exploration badge) so that ought to be enough of that. ;)

I don't wanna say too much, primarily because I've been warned that some of what we've discussed may not be possible.

My vision which Joerden is improving upon is a multi-story nightclub named the 'Naughty Corner' which will have a distinctive look and many details that I hope will make people want to spend some social downtime there. There will be a dance floor, a pool area and some nice secluded areas for secret rendezvous ;)

There will be a mission NPC (who I can talk about at length if you let me) welcoming visitors, the 'iconic' club logo will be available in the costume creator for souvenir shirts or whatever, and rumor has it that there may be a badge location nearby.

It's an idea I got from our discussions on the original Kickstarter comments page and decided to go for it.

Public or private? I'd it modern, historic, futuristic?

Joerden is a new name to me, as a volunteer does his process (response time, quality, availability) seem adequately busy?

I wonder how they decide what design elements to focus on and when "enough is enough"

VERY public. I want it to be a 'can't miss it' spot from both street and flying level. Definitely modern, think 'bringing the Tropics to the Titans'.

Joerden seems to be a very nice, upbeat person with a very artistic mind. Which, I guess, an artist has to have!. As for response time and availability, I'd say very good. I haven't been pestering him with emails since I know he will let me know when he has something he wants to show me.

As for his quality, well, the one shown on the Landmark page speaks for itself :) Impressive!

I've been assured that I will be very happy with the final result, and I believe I will be. He seems very open to my ideas, but of course, suggests improvements that I didn't think of.

And if even half of the things he's suggested come to be...Wow is all I can say!

Based on the numbers and the rough timeframe involved he's likely going to have to completely finish a Mogul every 4 or 5 days give or take. More power to him and wishing him and the rest of the Devs the best of luck. :)

Sorry, it's quite a bit past any reasonable kind of "fair use." Now, in Japan you could probably get away with it...

Not really spreading "negative waves" as much as indirectly suggesting that the players with Moguls might want to try to apply the KISS principle to their ideas because it's not like the Devs are going to have a huge amount of time to spend on any one of these.

I'd rather have all of the 100 or so Moguls done by launch day, wouldn't you?

I wouldn't mind if they didn

I wouldn't mind if they didn't get them done by launch, they could just get the locked down ideas from the Moguls and select locations on the map where they want them, then set up "Construction Sites" and add them in later. with updates. I would rather have an awesome city with amazing buildings like Mischiefs Ascent, Vixens, and Bob's and what ever else they've done so far.

Normally, I'd agree, but not in this case. This isn't something they'll come back and "improve" in later patches; the buildings will be done and finished and then they'll move on, and the building will be that way for years. So a Mogul that voluntarily compromises their building is really just hurting themselves. They've got one shot at this.

My main contention is that your math (four days or so per building, one person doing all the work) is wrong. It only starts that way, but they've got a team, so those four days per building are going to be overlapped ("pipelined") between multiple people. So long as they get the buildings (and whatever else is on their plate) done before launch, they're fine. I'm not convinced that the art crew is the critical path in development.

And I say that as a Double Trouble backer; I've got to wait until all the Mogul buildings are done, and possibly longer, before they get to the custom weapons work.

Who said that the Moguls (or even the zones themselves) can't be modified/fixed after launch? While I might agree it would probably be best to have these things as finished as possible before launch the precedent was set in CoH that zones could in fact be updated/modified as needed. If anything the improvements in technology would suggest that zone changes (for things like holiday events and the like) might even be more common in CoT than they ever could have been for CoH.

As far as there being "an entire art team" doing the work instead of one main guy (Joerden) goes that doesn't make the overall amount of work any less, especially if they remain open to the idea of allowing players to get as intricately detailed or complex as they'd like. Sure having 3 or 4 people doing the work is better than just one guy, but not by THAT much. They are still going to be collectively "booked solid" so to speak for literally years considering your point about the customized weapons and other things left to do.

The problem with modding it

The problem with modding it after launch Lothic is that what would the order of modding be? Who's would get modded, and by how much? Is there a line drawn to how much work and time can go into each mod? Can a mogul be modded after it's already been modded?

Doing this would open up a can of worms, in my opinion

Taking the time to be thorough and saying make sure it's right the first time so we don't have to do it again will save them a lot of work down the road.

That's why I suggested the KISS principle in the first place. If the Moguls are kept simple enough they can be cranked out and be "fully complete" by launch time. Yes things might be tweaked/fixed post launch but I'd leave that up to the discretion of the Devs as to how much of that they'll entertain,

Follow more here: http://landmarks.cityoftitans.com/

Mischief's Ascent has been a lot of fun - Joerden has really visualized the concept, fantastic artist. It's pretty complex, so imagine it will take the devs some time to get a digitized version. Quite the process, but very enjoyable.

Ooh! Who owns Vixens Inc? (Or is that an in-game faction? )

Sorry, I just found this thread--I had been spending my time :D camped out in the character creation forum when I should have been visiting more. I own Vixen's Inc. I think they did an amazing job! Joerden Leigh designed an absolutely wonderful building that I am very happy with. I can't wait!

I was particularly happy with:
(1) The asymmetrical building design.
(2) That you guys are willing to follow my request of: "Make it lit up like the casino in St. Martial's" at night.
(3) The glowing billboards.
(4) The statue of the superheroine on the top of the building, and the statues of heroines in the grounds surrounding the building.

Great work!

I honestly have to say that the main reason I don't visit these forums every day is that I know I would drive myself crazy with waiting for the game. So I have consciously to try to meter out how much I visit the forums in order not to get burnt out on anticipation...lol

Looks like the http://landmarks.cityoftitans.com/ URL is no longer valid. At least, I'm getting a DNS error.

Devs? Whats the T? I know

Devs? Whats the T? I know you wanted to move alot of the KS things to post launch but does that mean we can't see what work has been done?
