Interminables is out!

It's out! It's a novel by Paige Orwin.

My preordered copy just arrived! Paige was a player on the Virtue server of CoH (whom I don't think I ever met) but whose art (or whose collaborator's art?) I followed on DeviantArt. Her characters are so creative, they deserved their own world. Now they have it.

Quoting from the acknowledgements: "The original project grew out of a desire to preserve some of the characters developed by myself and friends in the MMORPG City of Heroes..."

The story is described as very different to City of Heroes. In a loose similarity to CoH, it is a divergent world. I've read a few pages when I should be going to bed so I just had to shout it out here. This is so inspiring for me to be able to read this, as there (but for infinitely more perseverance) go I. I doubt I'm alone in dreaming of publishing my CoH characters. So for your own inspiration, procrastination, devotion, check out "The Interminables" at barnesandnoble.com.

I wonder if the book has a way to speed up tomorrow...

I finished reading "The Interminables" a week ago, and I enjoyed it very much! The writing, the writer's voice, is a pleasure to read. Not as much for the usual measure of suspense, but more for the style. The nature of the shattered reality, infused with magic, means it doesn't play out with the rationality of a police procedural. I found a few scenes harder to follow but then the words would drag me back in.

The characters are powerful yet flawed. "She drank her lemonade; Istvan drank pain; he, Edmund Templeton, drank lives and then drank over them, doing nothing but try to forget how deep down a well he'd fallen." They're nominally unkillable, interminable in a conventional sense, which can be a little hard to relate to, but they're definitely no Supermen. Istvan Czernin, the humanform inhumanity of World War I, was definitely my favorite. He was an unlikely force of good who found himself at odds with an ominous utopia. If you want to believe that good and evil are in hearts, not powers, then this book is for you.

The magic is loosely explained, but my favorite aspects were in some great yet pithy lines. "Innovation in magic was akin to innovation in falling." The writing kept me from trying to reverse engineer all that was going on, and instead just reading along for the ride.

I highly recommend this book for the words it weaves. It's unconventional but in the end that's what I liked most about it. I look forward to Paige's next novel!
