For me, personally, I've found CO to be decent - once I had a subscription and access to freeform characters. As always, your mileage may vary - in particular, "decent" is a very fuzzy term that means something different to each person.

Yeah.... I have tried the F2P but it is lacking IMO, might buy 30 days of Sub and see what I think then...

Really depends; if your issue with it was the graphical style, or the writing style of the missions... then a subscription won't help. If your issue was "Augh, I don't feel like a superhero when I fall over when faced with a stiff breeze", then a subscription might help. It took me about four characters to get a power set that clicked, for example. Still, there are people around who are happy to help with that sort of thing.

Many share your angst; unfortunately I have found nothing that is even a pale shadow of CoX as far as playability and fun. So I am kind of stuck waiting.

I know this game that's supposed to be pretty awesome, but it's about 2 years until release. You have a chance of getting into closed beta a little before that though! XD

I've been playing Minecraft, but that's not an MMO. More-so a sandbox. I've not been really impressed with an MMO since CoX. Sometimes I get into a beta. I'll play a little bit, and realize it's the same old junk and quit.

TERA Online, Blade & Soul if you can, SW:TOR isn't bad for the storylines but after that, it loses all fun, and the RP community sucks.

I've been playing CO

I've been playing CO (subscription) mainly so I have a place to get a super-hero fix and fortunately fell in with a decent RP crowd. Survivability with a non-freeform character can be an issue, though.

I found Tera moderately

I found Tera moderately interesting for a little while, but I despise its launcher due to the fact that it takes *forever* to download a patch. I was able to patch 6 other games in the time it took to do a single patch for Tera. However the graphics are really nice, and the gameplay isn't horrible... still pretty grindy IMO.

There are a good number of former CoH folks in both CO and STO (star trek online). If you happen to try any Perfect World games like these, use the command /channel_join CoX and you'll be able to join in conversation with anyone who's online in any of their games (and a member of that channel, of course).

CO has really changed a lot from its first days, I found an old friend there (from CoX) and spent a while in a duo with him on my free account. the grouping made the fact that I was F2P tolerable, I think. I've since regained access to my original account (tried it back in 2009 shortly after release) and subbed. If you don't care for the (IMO) fugly "comic outline" you can turn it off in advanced graphic options.

Best advice I could give you here is: don't solo it ... while CO is by and large a fully solo-capable game with exception to Alerts and some Queue instances, it's really not all that fun to solo, at least until you learn the system... I played solo for a bit back in January and found it dissatisfying (on a free account)... it wasn't until about May, when I was talking to a former SG-mate on Skype, that I gave it another shot and really had fun with it.

SWTOR is certainly decent. It's quite good, even, although you will certainly feel Bioware's single player games background in it. Their F2P model is also quite poor, so my recommendation is based on a willingness to pay for a subscription for at least one month.

I found Tera to be in such

I found Tera to be in such bad taste (sexualized to a disgusting degree) I un-installed it before I even fought a single monster. I have been enjoying RaiderZ though. I like DCUO online too, but it's nothing like CoH, know that going in. It set out to be a different game and it did a good job of that.

I use to recommend Mabinogi to people, but it's progressed badly lately. There's a few more I'm planning to try, I'll get back here.

TERA is simply loaded with

TERA is simply loaded with eye candy ... no getting around that. EVERYTHING is beautiful! The environments, the NPCs, the mounts ... the Player Avatars ... everything is made for Maximum Pretty Factor (and in the case of the Elin, you have Rot Your Teeth Cuteness going for you too!). So they game is mostly eye candy. For the females, if there's ever choice between Sexy vs Functional ... Sexy wins every time. Some players joke that the Castanic Females who wear Plate armor (the Berzerker and Lancer classes) apparently have all their vital organs in their arms and legs, because those are the only parts of their bodies that are armored. Needless to say, the Castanics are the Overtly Sexy race in a game where everything has some measure of sex appeal (even the Elin and Popori, although in their case that falls under Rule 34). Ironically enough, the largest race segment in the game (at least on the server I played on) was ... Elin ... to the point where it was not uncommon to read people talking in Zone Chat about how Elin ARE The Master Race of TERA.

The gameplay for TERA was actually quite fun, challenging and engaging ... simply because you couldn't, as a Player, slack off and still succeed (or at least, not to the degree you could if you paid more attention to what you were doing). A lot of the features and functions of combat were effectively moved to being Player Controlled instead of just relying on the Random Number Generator to determine things like if your attacks Hit or Miss or not. So in TERA, if something hits you, it's because YOU didn't control your character (enough) to get out of the way, meaning it's YOUR FAULT you got hit ... not the randomizer used by the game. This creates a very interactive and "fast" gameplay that is quite engrossing.

Where TERA falls down though is in its Economic Systems (all of them are biased towards being massive massive gold sinks), its Experience Curve (it often feels like you're getting experience TOO fast, to the point that you're outleveling content so quickly you blink and you'll miss it), its Enchantment and Crafting Systems (see: Gold Sink above) and perhaps most tellingly ... it's Story ... which is rarely all that interesting. The Story and the storylines in the game are kind of railroad track linear and relatively dull in that respect. And most importantly, TERA is a Korean Game ... which means it is a Grindfest By Design.

So TERA has its good points and its bad points. It is however better on gamePLAY than a lot of other games I've seen on the market though. Their Active Combat System is really innovative for a MMORPG.

If you love great storylines

If you love great storylines and immersive gameplay then maybe "The Secret World" is the game you are looking for :)
I have been playing off and on since beta (made me get a lifetime lol) and it's a nice way to pass the time.
I love the freeform power wheel (512 powers, mix n match) and the atmospherics and gfx are sensational.

I have played SWTOR, TERA, CO

I have played SWTOR, TERA, CO, DCUO, Aion, and Rift at various times over the past year, and downloading STO to try today. Short answer is I'd recommend trying Rift and possibly CO, if you're looking for an MMO that feels at least a bit like CoH.

SWTOR was ok, but its combat felt lackluster; with few distinctive powers, most single target attacks merely whittle away at the enemy's HP. The game seemed balanced around needing your companion/pet even as a Jedi, which made my characters feel disappointingly weak. Storywise it's ok, but not so great if you like more freedom in your character's story - there's not much choice on what missions to do, though you can at least control your responses to questions. Appearance is bound to the gear you use, especially in F2P mode.

TERA was also ok, and offered more interesting (and varied) combat across its character classes, but the requirement of active combat and the balancing around it means that if you're in the mood to play more casually, survivability drops dramatically. Character customization was very weak and appearance is gear-driven. Its strongest point is the active combat feature.

CO was above average, and in theme and gameplay is most similar to CoH, but has many flaws and limitations. Some are solved by subscribing or buying access to freeform mode. I found the constant blocking/maneuvering in mid-combat to be both annoying and needed for survival, as the game is balanced around it. Tankish characters' lack of knockback/mez protection grated on my nerves, but at least is was possible to fight larger group of enemies and survive, with skill and good build choices. The player has freedom to choose what activities and missions to do, so I didn't feel railroaded by the storyline. Character appearance customization is quite good, but to get real freedom you'd want the buyable freeform power selection. This customization is its strongest point, including those flashy hero powers.

DCUO combat was annoying to me and made my characters feel weak; even the slightest lag made it difficult to respond to the flashed active combat symbols that allow you to counter enemy actions or take advantage of a brief weakness. Customization of appearance was decent, but unsatisfying compared to CO. Power choices felt illogical and railroaded at every turn - forced to take ice-themed powers to get tankish defenses (no "invulnerability" or "regen" powersets), for example. Be prepared for story railroading too - Superman, Wonder Woman, etc are your contacts, so you'd better like them...or the very slow xp from street sweeping. Its strongest point is the connection to the DC Universe (if you like that) and some flashy hero powers.

Aion was only tolerable up to level 35ish for me, after which forced grouping and unavoidable PVP seemed to prevail. Combat and powers are moderately well designed and animated, but the excessive limitations on flight may grind your gears as it did mine. Character customization is quite good, but appearance is bound to gear. Be ready to spend lots of time fighting somewhat unimpressive enemies and having trouble soloing more than 2 common enemies at a time.

Rift has a constantly changing world with a variety of appealing options for casual play while solo or grouping - responding to rifts or invasions, joining instant adventures, storyline questing, or "street sweeping" are available depending on your mood. Powers are distinctive and often even flashy, though controller-type hold/stun powers are disappointingly weaker than any CoH equivalent, and the ability to solo 3+ enemies isn't there for most builds until late game. Character customizing is ok but clothing is gear-driven, so costume is limited to what you find, but at least you can equip gear with the best stats while using the appearance of other gear. Its strongest point is the variety of activities available for gameplay.

Of those, Rift and CO have been most appealing and had more in common with CoH gameplay. Rift seems satisfying and survivable without a subscription, but CO seemed to need the subscription to avoid annoying me with limitations at every turn. Good luck in your quest, waiting two years for CoT will not be easy!

It somewhat bewilders me to comments like this. Not because you found it objectionable mind you, but rather because it seems those who think this upon getting into the game, makes me think they didn't look at the rating of the game.

TERA is rate M.

As for the sexy armor, really, you have to laugh at the idea that one can't wear such armor, when one thinks about it.

"Oh hey! I have to take out this sword wielding knight! Wait a minute, I'm a leather armor class!"

When people stop playing those leather/cloth armor classes because they realize leather armor falls in line with basically no armor at all, then I'll say the comment makes sense :p

Also, on that note, the Male Castanic's tended to show lots of skin as well ;)

You are right, I did not see the rating. If I had, I might well have never downloaded it in the first place. I probably should check those lol.

And yes, the males are every bit as bad. That was part of what made it so disturbing. The male elves AND castanics looked like cosplaying strippers. The poses made me cringe.

I've enjoyed SW:TOR and The Secret World a good bit, having beta tested both and subbed when they went live. I even bought the lifetime sub to TSW.

That said, I've not been as active on either of those at all recently. Been in the beta for War Thunder almost every day for a while, but not a lot beyond that.

(insert pithy comment here)

If you can handle the 'Mature

If you can handle the 'Mature' rating, with bare breasts, crude language, and enough blood to float a galleon, Age of Conan is... kinda amazing. Combat system is slightly complex - in a not-bad way. The graphics made my GPU squeal a bit, despite being an 'old' game.

It's also F2P and downloadable through Steam. However, they do handicap F2P players a little, most particularly in Storage. Except at the highest end-game levels, there is no restriction on Content for F2P players.

And where else, but Conan's Hyborea, do you get to... um, this might be a spoiler, but you get to destroy an army of not-dead cannibal soldiers by pissing-off the gods of the volcano and it goes FOOM! while you run for your life... while cackling madly! *grin*

Be Well!

I've also enjoyed SWTOR, although the above poster does not exaggerate about its F2P model. Only game I've played where I truly felt shoehorned into buying stuff. I mean, the game itself basically tells you you are second class for not paying. Any other game says something like 'subscribers get ten percent off!' SWTOR says: you are being charged more because you are not paying'. Lol.

It was actually shown if you stick to 1 or 2 characters, it was cheaper to play F2P. And I knew plenty of players who went F2P and never bought anything. Really, their F2P sucked because it started effecting P2Pers who had to start buying everything. Why I quit the game.

The devs of TOR even said it was the subs paying out to the cash shop the most, not the F2P.

In my opinion I think that

In my opinion I think that most Subscribers were the same in CoX as well (in that they were the real money makers compared to the Premium player base).

This is partly because CoX had 40K subscribers and 20K premium players.

There were 40K F2P players, but they don't count, because F2P as soon as they spent enough to earn a reward token, no longer counted as F2P. And considering how much some people spent to get the Black wolf... those superpacks were a *real* cash earner (as it were)

Quote:

1) I reject your reality.... and substitute my own
2) Not to be used when upset... will void warranty
3) Stoke me a clipper i will be back for dinner
4) I have seen more intelligence from an NPC AI in TR beta, than from most MMO players.

I think I'm going to start

I think I'm going to start playing SWGEmu(the Star Wars Galaxies Emulator) again. SWG is one of the only two MMOs I've played(CoH was the other), and I got spoiled by playing those two gems. SWGEmu has so much character customization, from character height/weight, facial features, clothing(90% which is crafted by other players). It also has a free form open skills system; want to do headshots with a rifle and then smash heads when they get close? Want to make clothing by day and be a martial artist by night? Or maybe you don't like combat and want to be a doctor and socialize with players while healing their wounds and enhancing their stats?

Player housing is amazing. You can place a house almost anywhere on the actual land in game. Not instanced at all.

The only thin I don't like about SWGEmu is the way when you shoot or hit something, there is not much visual effect like there was is CoH(ie Pendulum on a group of foes is epic!).

I've been following the SWGEmu project for almost 10 years, and the last couple years it finally feels like the old game with just a few things missing. Last time I played I tried rushing to get geared out for PVP and got burnt out. This go around I'm just going to take my time, play what I think would be fun, take part in player events and maybe even roleplay a little.

I can't wait for CoT. No other MMOs look appealing enough.

Well, I have tried ALL of the ones suggested (Except SWGEmu) and the don't seem to scratch the itch, even bought a month sub on most of em to see if it helped. I think I am just stuck waiting for CoT to scratch my itch.
