Horde Mode

In another thread Segev made mention of a specifically designed farming mission for those who like that sort of thing, I know I did...but less for the rewards and more for the challenge of trying to solo increasingly difficult enemies.

He also said that the in game story could be sporting events or pit fighting ect.

This kind of thing exists in other games and its called Horde Mode....waves of increasingly difficult enemies attacking. ]

I would personally love to see something like this in CoT. To me it has a few benefits. First and foremost it would give a sanctioned outlet for farming that was specifically controlled by the devs in terms of rewards and exploits (like power leveling). Second it would provide a simplistic mission type for those who just want to jump into some action without all the other gameplay slowing them down. It would also provide alternative ways to test a build.

This type of gameplay could be put in bases as a training room or have global scores to act as a kind of bragging rights.

What do you think?

This sounds a little like the

This sounds a little like the reactor room fight in the TV respec trial from CoX, if I'm understanding what you mean. Sounds like fun to me. A bunch of heroes with their backs to eachother fending off hordes of mobs as they get advanced on, trying to avoid getting swamped, etc. I think you could even give the team other things to have to do, like the reactor fight had, i.e. defend the reactor core, get the red shields, etc. Whether it's some kind of Danger Room/holodeck type thing or just a map you can access like arena, it sounds like it has some great possibilities.

You could have different types of mobs to fight, (robots, gangs, demons, etc), it could be done in the open world as an event like the Nemesis invasions and the zombie apocalypses etc. I like the build testing angle too.

I guess the main catch being thet you have to balance the rewards for doing it in a way that feels fair and reasonably, like anything else.

Its similar to the reactor

Its similar to the reactor room I guess. Never felt like the situation was ramping up to me tho.

The Horde mode I have the most experience with is in L4D2. For those unfamiliar a quick description....Normally in L4D2 you follow a moderately straight forward path fighting zombies and special infected until you reach the end of the mission. In Horde mode you are in one section of a map and have to take up a defendable position and survive as long as you can. Zombies come at you faster and faster with the special infected becoming more frequent. Sometimes you can be tasked with gathering supplies or what not but its primarily a survive as long as you can situation. Granted that is a FPS game and so some of the challenge comes from ammunition management a problem that would provide much less difficulty in CoT (assuming the endurance works similar to CoH).

Another game with a kind of Horde mode is the Arkham series. Batman (or Robin /nightwing /catwoman /ect) has to fight off an increasing number of foes in a specific time period as the difficulty of the foes ramps up. Its been a while since I played it but if I remember correctly its called Challenges in that series. It has a set time and foe limit so there is a determined end to the fight, this is slightly closer to the CoT style of combat but it is still twitch based so a direct comparison is difficult.

Basically I am saying that sometimes it would be nice just to put your character through its paces in a simple way....without having to design the situation around it using difficulty sliders, finding the right mission or worrying about other goals....just a straight up brawl to see just what your character can do.

If there is a mission creator system in CoT I will be able to make this kind of challenge for myself as I did in CoH and the AE but it would be nice if there was a kind of official mode as well.

I agree that the reactor room

I agree that the reactor room in TV was basically a lot of waiting, since the mobs didn't get that visibly better of come that much faster.

I like the ability to have distracting tasks to make it harder, as a general rule. I mean I wouldn't design it to the exclusion of such.

One thing that might be cool is to have a map that sends baddies at you/the team in ever increasing and faster waves, and then the game could keep a running list of longest survival times by individual, by team, by SG, etc. Of course, they will likely need to add difficulty to that as time goes on (people may be able to survive indefinitely somehow) and then those records would have to get asterisked or something like they do on baseball cards with player stats.

I don't see any reason not to offer both the option to have the 'distractions' as you put it...or not.

I am more interested in a quick pop in fight without things like mission goals. You want distractions...could be a drop down menu checklist thing.
