Hero Names

Something that's been nagging me for a while is something I think needs to be asked. I don't know if this has been covered elsewhere, but on the subject of hero names, after the first year or so, it's almost impossible to use a flashy name because either someone is using it, or they've "camped" it by naming a placeholder alt that name so they can use it later.

Champions Online has a nice feature whereby a player can use any name they want, but duplicates only conflict within their own personal account. Yes, this means you could have (in theory) eight people in a team, all with the same name, but far more likely what it will do is eliminate "zZzZzBl@ckTh0rN231xXXxxXx" because the player can't get the handle s/he wanted for their character.

Is CoT going to handle this issue? I'd love to not have to worry about whether someone else has camped a name I want to use. Honestly, in the last few years of CoX, the hardest part of character creation was picking a name someone else hadn't used. I would really like not having to go through that in the future.

Pretty sure CoT is planning

Pretty sure is been well established that CoT is planning on using a "global name" system similar to CO's. They are going for a massive single "virtual" server so something like a global name system would almost be a requirement to make that work easily.

Problem solved. ;)

Yes, it is true that my own

Yes, it is true that my own character names got a little...silly in the closing months of the game. Most of my characters had been named earlier on, it just took awhile to get the others to 50, and then to get them the shiny badges for accolade powers and what-not.

I can't say that I disagree with the OP. But, I did like how CoH handled the names. It was very odd for me to see a character on Champion with the name of a global friend whose character resided on Liberty. I'd asked this character on Champion when/why he transferred and I was corrected - he had always been on Champion.

If that's a little confusing because of my poor writing, please forgive me. Suffice it to say, a named character on one server would want that name protected on all the servers. But - it's not all about us as individual players. It's about the game and the community. I will have to trust Missing Worlds to do what they think is best. I just hope that this cool name I have in my head isn't taken when the game is ready. I wonder if there's a way to reserve names ahead of time? I might pony up some extra cash for that.....just sayin'....

And that's the great thing about the name @ global system. You don't have to worry about whether someone else thought of the name already, unless it's one that's already part of a published IP that might get MWM involved in a suit. Each account gets one unique global name (so you may have to worry about if that gets taken as a global name first, if you're really attached to it), each character may only be displaying the character name, but the system identifies the character by both (and it will likely be easy to find the global name of another player if you can target the character or find it in the chat log)

In my experience in Champions Online, only the most popular names got taken often enough to cause confusion, and even then the only pair I recall (besides minor variations on IP names) is two people who were both active on the contest chat channel; I had to look at the global name and remember who it was that was playing hide & seek and who was running the costume contest ^_^

Hands down, my all time

Hands down, my all time favorite player-made super-villain name I ever saw in a game was 'Ann Coultergeist.'

I personally had no problem with unique names. Honestly, I was surprised how often I got the name I wanted first time through. I do know though that there were a great many people who felt they could not play their concepts without the first name they thought up. We want to be unique, but if you and some other guy both came up with the same cool name totally separate from each other, why should one of you have to suffer?

And as I said before, I'd much rather see Captain Bob@global than xX_Captain_Bob_Xx

Add an option to hide the global name and just show it when moused over; thus it won't look much different from CoH without becoming too confusing.

Id like the global name to

Id like the global name to only show when someone goes to your character info/bio w/e.

Id like a way to hide it too, though im not 100% on that. I got stalked a bit in CoH for a while by someone, and couldn't hide because they had my global. (when I went invis, they would see me in Atlas and bitch about it, which made things awkward).

I figured you would not see

I figured you would not see the global all the time, but my comment still stands.
